3 Games that caught my eye...Oct. 6-7

Last week: 3-0
Overall: 12-3

Unofficially, we'll call this Rivalry Week as the schedule has given us some great league and neighborhood rivalry games that will have a huge impact on playoff seeding and league champions. Because of this, I am going in for a couple bonus picks.

Downingtown West (3-3) vs. Downingtown East (6-0) (-20)
This latest edition of the Downingtown Civil War probably won’t live up to the hype this year. While the Whippets always get up for their Lionville rivals, this year’s Cougar team seems to be operating on a different level. Coach Matta’s teams are always known for physical, smash mouth football but this year they have made it a point to grind through opponents with 3 RB’s already at 1300 yards between them. RB’s Aviado, Jonassaint, and Stocker give teams nightmares as East rotates 3 guys who would easily be 1000 backs by themselves. The running game takes pressure of QB Bryce Lauletta and opens up play action at just the right time. West was pounded for 390 yards last week by Avon Grove RB Kevin Francis so expect more of the same with a bigger, more physical OL. Their D has given up lots of big plays & the Whippets are too young & inexperienced. I expect East will take great pleasure in running over their fierce rivals en route to a matchup with Unionville next week & Coatesville in 2 weeks…..DEast 42-7

Neshaminy (5-1) (-3.5) @ CB South (5-1)
CB South is back at home after suffering a blowout loss at North Penn last week. The Titans don’t get any favors hosting a non-league game against a Neshaminy team aiming to win the SOL National. Neshaminy will spread the wealth on O but has shown some leaks on D. I would bet that the Neshaminy D will set its sights on shutting down Titan RB Ryan Watson while the Titans may struggle to slow down soph QB Brody McAndrews and his weapons. Neshaminy will be kicking themselves come playoff time for a letdown game at home against Downingtown West. Coach Wilmot will not let his guys forget that from here on out I bet. I’ll go with Redskins winning on the road….Neshaminy 27-16

Spring-Ford (4-2) @ Perk Valley (5-1) (-1)

The 422 rivalry is alive and well as both teams bounced back from some tough early season setbacks to setup a deciding game for the PAC-Liberty Division. Spring-Ford has probably had the tougher non-league schedule between the two (Unionville, Exeter, Wilson-West Lawn) but they have shown progress in moving the ball on O in the last few games. Perk Valley has been solid on D all year minus the 29 they gave up against Pennridge. The stadium will be packed as these two neighborhood rivals have established themselves as D1 6A contenders year-in and year-out. Both coaching staffs deserve credit for bouncing back this year when they lost a ton from last year’s teams. That’s the sign of a good program when you can play “next man up”. I have a feeling that Spring-Ford may be ready for a big game but something tells me Perk Valley will make a stop late to decide this one…PV 21-19

Bonus games:
Pennsbury (5-1) (-6.5) @ Truman (5-1) Pennsbury takes on familiar faces in another local rivalry. Truman isn’t quite ready for this one yet but they’re on the right track… Pennsbury 31-23

WC Rustin (4-2) @ Unionville (6-0) (-6.5) Ches-Mont American championship runs through these two teams. Unionville has some impressive wins so far (Spring-Ford, Academy Park) and they sit at #1 in the 5A playoff rankings. Meanwhile Rustin got blown out last week versus Coatesville & has given up 90 points in the last 3 weeks...Unionville 27-21

The West: 6A Top 10….October 3rd (#1 - #5)

1 Pine Richland 6-0, D7; It must be a nightmare for opposing DCs seeing the Rams with an effective running game after Jordan Crawford rushed for 7-1st ½ Tds last week against Central Catholic (Central Catholic!) knowing Austin White is getting healthier each passing week. White is the West Allegheny transfer who rushed for 1313 yards last year, while Crawford (5-8, 175) is their lead back who carved up Central Catholic’s defense for172 yards on 20 carries. Adding that to Notre Dame recruit Phil Jurkovec makes for one scary team. Jurkovec was his usual self last week completing 11 of 15 passes (79%) for 145 yards. With an offense already averaging 47ppg, imagine what opposing defenses would have to deal with if White can be effectively incorporated into the offense. About the game; Coach Kasperowicz pulled starters at halftime holding a 47-3 lead as the Rams rolled 47-17. Peters Twp is next and believe it or not, it’s a revenge game with PT winning last year 32-27. They have an interesting Qb in Jake Cortes at 6-5, 230 pounds but too many under classman especially in the secondary where they start 2 sophomore cornerbacks. Soph CBs against Phil Jurkovec!?

2 State College 5-0, D6; State High pounded out another win last week overwhelming Carlisle 70-14. With a diverse attack they are scoring a ton of points, averaging 58 a game and playing a lot of people. Like Pine Richland, their games are over early, going into the half with a 42-7 lead in this one. Qb Tommy Friberg seems to improve exponentially, completing 10 of 14 passes for 188 yards and 4 Tds, most of which went to Brandon Clark, their 6-5 wide-out who snagged 5 tosses for 104 yards and 3 scores. By the end of the game the stats were overwhelmingly in favor of the Lions, 430 (210r-220p) to 182 for the Herd. The Lions are very physical and very athletic and will need every bit of that this Friday at Cumberland Valley. If CV came out of the meat grinder that was last week’s game against Central Dauphin, and I believe they did, this will equal last year’s battle won by State 20-16 in intensity and closeness. You might be able to hear the pads hitting in Pittsburgh in this one.

3 Central Dauphin 4-1, D3; Central Dauphin finally got the monkey off their back last week with the 20-14 win against nemesis Cumberland Valley. CV had won the previous 5 spanning 3 years by an average score of 18-13. As expected, nothing came easy in this one with the Rams defense holding off Eagle stud back and PSU recruit Charlie Katshir on a 4th and 2 from CD’s 4 with 90 seconds left on the clock. It looked like maybe 4 inches as they failed on their bread and butter off tackle (left) call that many find difficult to stop, despite running it all night. They got 294 yards (202r) but only 14 points, or, 20.85 yards per point. That’ll make any DC happy! Katshir was held to 32 rushing and 68 receiving on 4 catches. The Rams got 154 rushing and 130 passing with. FB Mike Wise-Belle (5-9, 235, sr) grinding out 80 yards on 18 carries. The demise of both CV and Central Catholic elevated the Rams to 3rd from 5th in the polls this week. Central Dauphin East (4-1) is next and what a bad week to play another rival. The Rams beat them 34-18 last year when they were a much younger group. Tough going from Cumberland Valley Week to Fight Night.

4 Cumberland Valley 4-1, D3; This week we get to see how CV comes back after a loss, their first of the season following last week’s bash with CD. That was really anyone’s game, ending on CD’s 2-yd line with time expiring in a 20-14 loss. Wow, quite a game. For this week you could think of a number of teams you’d rather play than undefeated State College (5-0) who is just flattening teams by an average score of 58 to 17. So this will be another physical encounter for the Eagles but they’re ready, having played quality teams and athletes with wins against Coatesville, McDevitt (quick as anyone!) and last week’s experience against Central Dauphin. The same cannot be said for State College who played teams with a combined won/loss of 9-17. The only winning team, Carlisle at 3-2 has faltered in the face of quality losing to CD 54-14 and State 70-14. Knowing the program and having followed them says it’s a heck of a game. So like last week’s CV-CD game, toss it up again!

5 Bethel Park 3-1, D7; Nice bounce back by the Black Hawks sucking it up after the 54-20 pounding administered by Pine Richland 2 weeks ago to just throttle Hempfield 55-21 last week. But then that’s what we’ve come to expect over the years from head coach Jeff Metheny (24th season) and company over the years. Running back Tanner Volpatti ran silly in this one, carrying it a mere 11 times but for 242 yards and 4 touchdowns! Qb Justin Sliwoski balanced it out with a modest but effect performance completing 13 of 29 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. A glance at the schedule says they could run out but being high school football, don’t bet on it especially with Seneca Valley next. SV won last year 25-21 and it’d probably be a bad idea to focus on their 1-4 record with a 5-pt loss at Peters Twp and a 8-pt loss at Central Catholic. The big guy Gabe Lawson needs to play well under center for any chance but Bethel should handle this young team that won’t back down.

Springfield 42. Ridley 7

the worst performance I've seen in over 40 years of Ridley football. Unprepared ( Springfield RB had well over 200 yards and 5 tds), undisciplined ( at least 5 fumbles ), out coached , and probably the biggest indictment on the program - they quit. Either the kids quit on the coaches , or the coaches quit on the kids. Either way , I'm embarrassed for every player who ever wore a Ridley uniform.

Varsity Lineman Chute - 50"L x 50"W

Great for drive blocking and other basic drills, the Football Lineman Chute trains linemen to maintain a low center of gravity with every snap of the ball. Elevating the hips for a strong forward push, the chute encourages linemen to break out of their stances properly. Defensive players are forced to keep their heads down by the chute's helmet guards, so when the time does come to explode across the line of scrimmage, they can keep their balance while staying low to the ground.

Heavy-duty steel construction provides teams with reliable practice equipment
Used to position linemen into the proper form for drive blocks
Framework encourages athletes to stay low, elevate their hips and find their balance as they move forward
Equipped for additional chutes for a multi-player lineup

The West: 6A Top 10….October 3rd (#6 - #10..plus Others)

6 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 4-2, D7; Everyone knew the Vikings graduated a lot of key parts from last year’s Silver Medal team, but few would have predicted two losses by 4-plus touchdowns this season with an outstanding Qb returning and a good nucleus. Opening at Cathedral Prep in a losing 40-7 effort could not have felt good coming as it did on the heels of losing to St, Joseph’s Prep 42-7 in the 6A final. Last week’s 47-17 loss to Pine Richland shows how great the gulf has become between these two programs….and is likely more a reflection of how superior Pine Richland has become than how far the Vikings have fallen. EVERYONE is getting destroyed by the Rams. Looking ahead with 3 of their last 4 games at home against Butler, Altoona and Penn Hills plus the road game at Norwin says they go into the Wpial with a head of steam at 8-2. Butler is next and at 2-3 they’re improved but they are not ready for a road game at Central Catholic.

7 Manheim Township 4-1, D3; Blue Streaks running back Grayson Sallade’s performance was electrifying (get it?) and record setting with 6 touchdowns and 304 yard rushing against Conestoga Valley as the Streaks rolled to a 49-28 LL-Section One win. It was over at the half with a 49-14 lead. And by game’s end they rushed for 438 yards while holding Conestoga Valley to 2! What Coach Mark Evans is looking for is consistency from a group that lost to powerful Governor Mifflin 49-14 while giving Central Dauphin their only loss of the season. Their last two wins, 56-0 vs Hempfield and last week’s suggest that may be occurring. What you have here is a team that averages 41ppg while allowing 8 minus the (anomaly?) Governor Mifflin game. So this is quite a team when they have their act together. McCaskey (1-4) is next, a team they defeated last year 35-7. With 6 and 3-pt losses to York 4-1 and Conestoga Valley 3-2, the Streaks need to take care as the Red Tornado can score points and have a lot of speed.

8 Wilson 3-2, D3; Since suffering their only loss of season 3 weeks ago to Central Dauphin 28-20 at home, Wilson reeled off two big wins, beating Warwick 56-24 then McCaskey last week 33-7. Coach Doug Dahms is getting it right (more physical) after a 1-2 start emphasizing the running game that saw Ignacion (Iggy) Reynosa get 186 yards rushing and catching 6 passes for 39 yards. Kept the passing attack short with Connor Uhrig completing 15 of 19 passes for 104 yards. That’s part of Wilson’s problems this year, they are without a burner/deep threat. Reynosa has been their leading receiver with 20 receptions for 228 yards, followed by TE Nick Johnson (6-1, 230, jr) with 9 catches for 125 yards. But two weeks of home cooking will get things right with Penn Manor and Lebanon both 1-4 coming in before the big one in Lancaster against Manheim Township. Otherwise the beat still goes on with “The Streak” now at 66 consecutive LL-Section One wins!

9 North Allegheny 4-2, D7; Looks like North Allegheny found their groove the last 4 weeks with the competitive loss to Central Catholic followed by 3 consecutive wins by an average score of 43-14. Ok, that includes Shaler and Butler but when you throw in the good defensive effort against Central Catholic and a 44-27 road win at Mt. Lebanon, it gets your attention. The D made its presence felt last week as well, sacking Qb James Stocker 3 times while containin the diverse Blue Devil attack, jumping out to a 27-7 halftime lead. How about duel threat quarterback Luke Trueman completing 12 of 18 passes for 248 yards and 5 Td strikes! Tack on another 118 rush yards to see what a complete game he had. Wide out John Vardzel (South Carolina transfer) had 5 receptions for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns. All totaled, they produced 514 yards of total offense. Sounds more like Clemson than NA. That’s what you call a statement game. This week sees them home in an important Northern-7 Conference game against Penn Hills (5-1) who along with Catholic at 3-1 are essentially all tied for 2nd place, NA being 2-1 behind Pine Richland at 4-0.

10 Mt Lebanon 4-2, D7; Mt. Lebanon tumbled in the ranking from 6 to 10 and nearly out. In fact, except for their sizeable offense it’s hard making a strong case for them. Allowing 44 points and 514 total yards AT HOME is not what a high caliber team does. Each time they’ve played a quality team they’ve been soundly defeated, last week vs NA and earlier at PR 53-29 with narrow wins against Fox Chapel 32-27 and Canon McMillan, 24-17. And with the reshuffling of teams into 6 classifications, the pickings get slim. But the weekend will sort things out with a number of telling head-to-head encounters. Check out this listing; Erie High 5-1 at McDowell 3-3, Peters Township 5-1 at Pine Richland 6-0, Penn Hills 5-1 at North Allegheny 4-2, Delaware Valley 6-0 at Williamsport 5-1, Scranton 5-1 at Hazelton 3-3. The Blue Devils will get back on the winning track Friday with 3-3 Norwin in, a team they defeated last year 34-13.

The West: 6A Top 10....Sept 27th (#6 - #10..plus Others)

6 Mt Lebanon 4-1, D7; I guess you could say with surety Mt. Lebanon’s quarterback James Stocker is now healthy after last week’s performance completing 10 of 14 passes for 278 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 63-14 destruction of Altoona. All totaled the Blue Devils produced 571 yards of offense, holding the Lions to a mere 206 yards, 86 rushing. They have a big game this week being home in a crossover game with North Allegheny, a team they lost to last year 22-15. Since losing 4 weeks ago to Pine Richland, they’ve won 3 straight, averaging 39ppg and allowing 10. This one looks like a real head banger with the difference likely being Lebo’s Qb James Stocker.
7 Bethel Park 3-1, D7; Bethel Park got thumped by Pine Richland 54-20. Along the way they were exposed as one dimensional with the Rams shutting them down until the reserves showed up the second half. By that point Pine Richland had a 47-point lead. Like all teams coming off a thumping, the question now is how will they respond, especially on the road coming off their first loss. Hempfield may be 1-4 but have been competitive with 5 and 8 point losses. It was no contest last year with the Black Hawks winning 48-13.
8 Manheim Township 3-1, D3; Evidently these guys were laser focused like Central Dauphin was, traveling to Landisville to pummel Hempfield’s Black Knights 56-0. Running back Grayson Sallad (Harvard) had a strong performance gaining 186 yards on 10 carries with 3 Tds while Luke Emge was also “on”, completing 7 of 9 for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns. Drake Puffenbarger, their marauding 6-4, 240-pound run stuffer at linebacker had at least 9 tackles and 2 TFL, holding Hempfield to 202 total yards. You knew Manheim would be stoked after the embarrassment by Governor Mifflin the week before but still felt Hempfield would put up some resistance with wins against Dallastown and Central York, especially at home. It was over at the half, down 35-0. They’re home this week against Conestoga Valley (3-1) who they defeated last year 35-12. This could get interesting with the Bucks averaging 47ppg but allowing 38. Their only loss was to Lampeter Strasburg 57-54 in overtime. The Streaks need to stay focused in this one.
9 Wilson 2-2, D3; Talking about streaks, Wilson’s surprisingly easy 56-24 win over Warwick extended their Lancaster-Lebanon Section One game winning streak to 65 games! Talk about having a bullseye on your back! Everyone got in the act against Warwick with running back Iggy Reynoso doing the most damage, rushing for 274 yards on 26 carries and 5 Tds. He also snagged 3 passes for 48 yards with the Bulldogs finishing with 424 total yards of offense. An interesting side story is Wilson transfer Grayson Kline completing 21 of 46 passes for 348 yards. At 6-4, 225, he seemed to be the next big thing at Wilson but was edged out by Connor Uhrig. His brother Seth Kline graduated from Wilson and went on to Widener (St. Joe’s home field) in Chester where he starred. Wilson is at JP McCaskey this week opening LL-Section One action against the 1-3 Red Tornado. If Wilson doesn’t follow up last week’s win with another big win, you’ll know they’re having real issues.
10 North Allegheny 3-2, D7; As expected, North Allegheny had no trouble with Butler doing pretty much what they wanted rushing for 266 yards with Turner White leading the way gaining 159 yards on 20 carries. The week before that they beat Shaler 55-7. The competition has been soft but its allowed the offense to gain some rhythm. And all in all, the defense has been steady since the 35-15 breakdown at Bethel Park, with a good showing against Central Catholic in a losing 14-7 effort. So if they bring the characteristics shown there and the recently discovered offense, they’ll be right in it on the road this weekend against Mount Lebanon.

Others:

Peters Township 4-1, D7; Beat Hempfield 23-15, at Norwin.

Penn Hills 4-1, D7; Beat Shaler 34-7, home to Seneca Valley. With NA, Lebo and Central Catholic down the road, this is one they don’t want to lose.

Williamsport 4-1, D4: Wow, Shikellamy stepped up big time falling in ot losing to Williamsport 45-38. At Scranton.

Norwin 3-2, D7; Beat Canon McMillan 34-14, now home to Peters Township.

Central Dauphin East 3-1, D3; Returned to Earth with a thud losing to powerful Harrisburg 45-7. At Chambersburg to sooth the pain.

Red Lion 4-0, D3; The beat goes on from last year’s 10-1 campaign beating York 31-14. Should crush Northeastern.

Erie High 4-1, D10; Beat Trinity School-OH 49-0….at Franklin.

Delaware Valley 5-0, D2; Beat North Pocono 41-0 and now home to 3-2 Hazelton.

Scranton 5-0, D2; Survived rival West Scranton 35-20 and now for the real test against Williamsport at Scranton.
