Oxford at Unionville

My kids were at Unionville several years and really like the high school and football program. For this season I'm really pulling for Oxford as they have a chance to make 5A playoffs. Oxford has really struggled for many years and the coach Mike Means seems to have them on the upswing in the American division. The QB England has thrown over 1000 yards (Nobody in the Inquirer has eclipsed 1000), 9 touchdowns and the offense is averaging over 440 yards per game. They played Rustin to end last week losing late in the game. If they win this game the only other team of note would be Shanahan in late October. Should be a good game tonight in the beautiful rolling hills of East Marlboro Chester County. Good luck to both.

Parkland mercy rules Easton 42-7

#6 Easton at #3 Parkland (State Rankings by PennLive)

Easton travels to Orefield to take on Parkland in the biggest early season game in the EPC South. Since Rich Snisack turned Parkland into a powerhouse in the mid-1990s, this has been the premier rivalry in the Lehigh Valley. Since 1996, either Easton or Parkland has been in every District 11 final except for 2008 (Liberty vs. Freedom). Easton and Parkland have met for the title in 2003, 2009, 2013, and 2014 and met in the playoffs in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 with Easton winning the first 6 and Parkland taking the last 5. Recently, the Trojans have dominated the Red Rovers, winning five straight and six of the last seven. Since 1999, Easton and Parkland are 13-13 against each other.

This year’s match up pits a pair of great defenses against each other. Parkland and Easton have given up a combined 23 offensive points. Easton has yielded 142 rushing yards in three games (1.8 yards per carry), while Parkland has given up just 73 yards in the air (1.3 yards per attempt!). Both are fast and physical and we can expect a low scoring affair.

Parkland Offense: The Parkland offense has depended heavily on the ground game and the running of tailback Jahan Worth. Worth is a monster (6’1 235) and one of the toughest players in the state to bring down in the open field. They’ll line up two tight ends and a fullback and try to bully teams at the point of attack. Quarterback Michael Ruisch is an efficient player with size (6’5 195) to survey the field and a good arm to push the ball downfield. The offensive line, though smaller than in years past, has probably the best individual lineman in the conference in left tackle Kobe Thomas (6’4 280). A lot of their rushing success has been going right behind the star tackle.

Easton Offense: The Red Rovers have been pass happy by their standards early in the year. Quarterback Scott Poulson missed last week with a minor injury but should be good to go this evening. He’s a really good athlete with a strong arm and some pocket mobility. He also has an array of huge receivers to throw to in Jake Herres (6’5), Mikey Dunlap (6’3), Eddie Olsen (6’2) and Luke Nimeh (6’2). Herres has FBS offers and is one of the most dangerous receivers in a conference loaded with them. The offensive line is very good in pass protection, particularly the two tackles, Trevor Storm (6’7 235) and Elek Ferency (6’4 265). Both are light on their feet and athletic enough to handle speed rushers and have the size and power to take on the bulrush. And their interior line really can run block, particularly sophomore center Patrick Shupp (6’4 295) who looks every bit like an FBS recruit on the inside. The run game was much improved last week against Freedom, thanks in part to a commitment to running between the tackles rather than to the outside.

Parkland Defense: They’re awesome. Not a ton of fancy packages or blitzes. They get pressure from the line, particularly end Xavier Huff and tackle Jeremy Sell, and that frees up the back-7 to really take control of the game. Worth is one of the best linebackers in Pennsylvania, he was All State as a junior and has improved in just about every fact of the game. Outside backer Mason Malozzi is also an All State type talent and those two just wreak havoc. The rebuilt secondary (3 new starters) has been very good so far. It also helps a secondary look good when quarterbacks have no time to throw, which has been the case thanks to such excellent defensive line play.

Easton Defense: Similarly, the Red Rovers has suffocated opposing offenses so far. The strength of the Rover defense is in the secondary, which has four returning starters, all of whom are rangy (corners are 5’11 and 6’2 and safeties are 6’2 and 6’3) and can run. Katrell Thompson is the best cover guy in the Valley. Because of this, they are free to blitz and put a ton of pressure on the quarterback and in the run game. They also have a deep and talented defensive line, led by defensive end Trevor Storm. Storm has been a headache this year, with three sacks, a blocked punt, and a ton of tipped passes at the line disrupting opposing offenses. Partner in crime EJ Simmons is likely out this evening with an injury, which is a huge blow (he leads the team in tackles) but junior Darien Lee (6’2 220) has played a ton of snaps and can really rush the passer.

Match Up to Watch: Trevor Storm versus Kobe Thomas will go a long way to deciding this football game. If Thomas can keep Storm at bay, the Parkland offense can get a lot of things going, both running and throwing the football. Storm has a great first step and good bend to get around really good tackles in his pass rush, if he can beat Thomas off of the corner, that will make Parkland one dimensional. But if Thomas gets up under his pads and can drive him off the ball in the run game, Worth will be going over his star left tackle all evening. How Storm and company do up front in general will be huge, because Parkland’s recent dominance has been thanks to their offensive line dominating the Easton front.

Easton Wins If: If the Red Rovers can throw the football like they did against Stroudsburg and Liberty that will open the run game up and give them big play capability. If they can get guys in the box and stop Worth from getting a head of steam, they can control the Parkland run game.

Parkland Wins If: Parkland has dominated the Easton run game recently, and if Easton can’t move the football on the ground they’re toast. If Parkland’s offensive line bullies the Easton front and Worth has another monster night, the Trojans will roll.

The Pick: We will know a lot more about the Easton football team at about 9:00 this evening. In 2009, Easton announced it was back by winning a week 3 slugfest with the Andre Williams Parkland team, and rode that momentum all the way to a District 11 title. On the flip side, if Parkland comes out and dominates again, it looks like another good, but not great, year for the Red Rovers. Parkland 21-10

The West: 6A Top 10….September 19th

1 Pine Richland 4-0, D7; Big changes in the rankings this week but not with these guys who continue rolling over everything in their path, downing previously undefeated Penn Hills 43-6. No real surprise there unless more was expected from PH. Decent balance with Phil Jurkovec throwing for 168 yards and running back Jordan Crawford rushing for 138 yards on 16 carries. To date the Rams have outscored opponents 179-42 with the toughest part of the schedule up next, traveling to Bethel Park this week followed by a home game against Central Catholic. Its crunch time and a Wpial playoff preview with undefeated Bethel Park looking like the top dog in the competitive Southeastern Conference with Mt. Lebanon their biggest threat. Pine Richland looks like they’ll run away with the Northern with comparatively pedestrian attacks at Central Catholic and North Allegheny. But all of that comes after what could be a stiff challenge from Bethel Park, by far their toughest opponent to date. The Black Hawks proved they can bang with the big boys defeating North Allegheny in the opener 35-15. They owned the clock and had nearly 350 yards rushing in that one. Humm!

2 Cumberland Valley 3-0, D3; Cumberland Valley jumped on Bishop McDevitt early and often, racing out to a 21-3 first half lead then coasting to a 49-23 blowout win. Few do that to McDevitt except DeMatha and the likes. For an offense that often just pounds you stupid with painful drives, they used the big play in this one featuring 47 and 58-yard rushing scores, an 82-yard kickoff return for six and a 99-yard fumble return for another score. They’re looking better every week with the win against Coatesville in the opener and now a road win against struggling Bishop McDevitt (2-2). Tough times for McDevitt in their new digs with losses to Harrisburg 34-0 and now CV. 49-23. They’re home this week to hapless Chambersburg (0-3) who forfeited last week’s game to Red Lion.

3 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 3-1, D7; Make that 3 in a row since the disaster in Erie with last week’s 42-14 throttling of Hempfield at beautiful Spartan Stadium. The Spartans are an extremely young group (inexperienced OL, soph Qb) playing without their starting quarterback Justin Sliwoski while starting sophomore Blake Remeley in his place. Sophomore starting quarterbacks in 6A! But it was still an impressive win where Central Catholic got it going offensively, particularly with Qb Troy Fisher completing 15 of 23 for 234 yards and 3 touchdowns. Their average score in games played since the Cathedral loss is 32-7. Seneca Valley is next, a 2-1 team they routed last year 42-14.

4 State College 3-0, D6; State High is looking real good against a real weak schedule blasting McCaskey 45-12, Hollidaysburg 55-27 and Mifflin County’s Huskies last week 56-7. But they are playing a lot of people and getting a rhythm for the coming Mid Penn wars. This one was no contest, building a 49-0 half time lead then coasting, holding Mifflin County to 109 yards rushing and 73 through the air. They had 4 rushing Tds, 2 touchdown tosses, one by Qb Tommy Friberg, another by tailback Triston Lyons….a pick returned 44-yards for a score plus a fumble in the end zone for another 6. Always a good sign doing what’s expected of you against a weaker opponent. They come to the Harrisburg area Friday to play Mechanicsburg’s other team, the Mechanicsburg Wildcats, getting a taste of the area before a return trip to Mechanicsburg to play Cumberland Valley 2 weeks later.

5 Bethel Park 3-0, D7; What’s with the schedule maker giving the Black Hawks’ crossover games with North Allegheny and Central Catholic? After slamming Norwin 27-7 while holding them to 16 rush yards plus the season opening 35-15 win against North Allegheny and Pine Richland coming in Friday, we’ll see if they’re up to the task. They were last year in Gibsonia losing a tough one 31-24 then again in Districts, 35-32. Bethel’s pounding methodical offense (232 rushing vs Norwin) may give the Rams fits as the O-Line is veteran, large and physical, with a supporting defensive cast (16 rush yds for Norwin) that is under rated, allowing but 29 points. And it’s the right offense to slow the Rams down if they can prevent a runaway 14-0 1st quarter, putting them in a hole. About Bethel’s D, maybe it’s time for young talent like sophomore DE Aaron Beatty (6-4, 210) to get some props! He’s one of the unsung heroes of the team that will get some needed recognition if they come away with the win. There’s a lot of good football played in the South Hills.

6 Central Dauphin 2-1, D3; Last week’s win against Wilson at Wilson may be just the tonic that pulls this young team together. That and Qb Brady Straub performing like the quarterback Coach McNamee needs for his system to fire on all cylinders. Straub went a blistering 12 of 18 for 248 yards while the D did what the Ram D often does in shutting the Bulldogs down to 49 yards rushing in a 28-20 win. 49 yards! Carlisle’s undefeated Thundering Herd are next coming to Landis off a weak schedule. But in a tight Mid Penn race in the most competitive Big School conference (top to bottom) in the state….Central Dauphin 2-1, Harrisburg 4-0, Cumberland Valley 3-0, CD East 3-0 and State College 3-0….you can’t afford a slip up with Carlisle 3-0 sandwiched between Wilson and Cumberland Valley. Having said that, CD should crush these guys.

7 Mt Lebanon 3-1, D7; Mt. Lebanon survived a real scare from Canon McMillan but hung on to edge the Big Macs 24-17. Canon McMillan had no answer for Aiden Cain who caught 9 passes for 214 yards. Running back Antonio LaSoto had a strong outing as well rushing for 115 yards. Have to mention C-Mac’s rising sophomore Qb Tre Lewis (6-2, 180) who completed 20 of 28 passes for 258 yards. Like we said last week, they have some people that can hurt you and will score points. Still, it was a nice road win for Lebo who should move to 4-1 with a win at Altoona this week. After that comes a great inter-conference matchup with North Allegheny.

8 Manheim Township 2-1, D3; Township plummeted in the rankings from 4th to 8th after getting manhandled by Governor Mifflin 49-14, at home! This comes on the heels of Mifflin getting pounded themselves by undefeated 5A Cocalico the week before, 42-21. No shame ever losing to one of central PA’s top programs, but a 49-14 drubbing speaks to other issues (no injuries), possibly an inflated ego routing South Western 42-0 the week before after the big win against Central Dauphin in the opener. At any rate, Governor Mifflin’s Mustangs pounded them, rolling up a 424 to 142 total yardage advantage with their big back Isaac Ruoss (6-1, 215, sr) running roughshod for 282 yards on 32 carries. Quite a stud. The big question is will they bounce back? Hempfield’s 2-1 Black Knights, down the road in Landisville are no one to mess with, so we’ll know something about their character after this one. District-3 football is a study in parity this year with Central Dauphin, Manheim, and Wilson learning that the last few weeks.

9 Wilson 1-2, D3; You don’t often see Wilson at 1-2 but that’ll happen with a demanding schedule of Governor Mifflin, Spring Ford and Central Dauphin along with 7 and 8-pt losses. That tough slate will set them up for a run at their 10th straight LL-Section One title, beginning this week at home. There is not a lot to say about last week’s 28-20 loss to Central Dauphin with the maturation of Ram’s Qb Brady Straub mentioned above coupled with their defense in beast mode, holding them to 49 yards rushing. But give them credit coming back from a 28-6 deficit in the 3rd quarter. The next opponent is Warwick (2-1). They are a 35-27 loss to undefeated 5A muscle team Manheim Central from being undefeated, and they kept it close last year against Wilson losing 14-10. The Warriors are still the Warriors, wanting to beat you down with a big line and decent D. Their Qb this year is Grayson Kline, 6-5 225 pound senior who can fling it. This is a dangerous veteran team where Wilson can lose so expect them to come out on fire, pulling out all the stops to prevent a 1-3 start. Hard embracing Wilson after two losses but there are still a lot of good parts and strong history with this team.

10 North Allegheny 2-2, D7; This was a tough decision whether to put North Allegheny in the 10 spot, Central Dauphin East, Erie High or Warwick. Everyone knew North Allegheny would rout Shaler but it was still a great confidence builder after the 14-7 loss to Central Catholic the week before. 55-7 feel goods! Plus it snapped a 2 game losing streak and allowed the offense to get in gear following the 14-7 knockdown, drag-out affair with the Vikings. Racking up 410 total yards of offense is impressive against anyone. So is the 126 yards allowed. That should set them up well for consecutive road trips to Butler and Mt. Lebanon. If Butler’s first 3 games are any indication, they won’t offer much, having allowed 117 points through 3 games.

3 Games that caught my eye...Sept. 22-23

Wk 4
Last week: 2-1
Overall: 6-3

Truman (4-0) @ Neshaminy (3-1) (-2.5)
How bout them Tigers? Truman is a feel good story out of the SOL National at 4-0 and a legit shot at competing for the league title this year. With a road trip to Neshaminy, Truman will be tested for the first time this season after beating up on winless Methacton & Tennent, and 1 win Avon Grove and CR South. The speed of their backfield with RBs Sayyid Saunders and David Akwinde will give Neshaminy fits all night with the misdirection of the Wing-T. Look for Neshaminy to take advantage of every opportunity on O to score by finding stud TE/H-Back Oleh Manzyk along with the Hebron brothers out of the backfield. Could Neshaminy lose again at home? I think that Truman’s speed and execution of the Wing-T will keep it close but I think Neshaminy will provide the reality check of an easy non-league schedule for the Tigers…Neshaminy 24-21

North Penn (2-2) (-4.5) @ Pennridge (3-1)
This game will be huge step in playoff jockeying. If Pennridge gets by NP this week, they could be looking at a top 2 seed in 6A. If NP wins, they could be back in position to get a 1st round home game & getting in the conversation for a top 4 seed by winning out and finishing 8-2. The switch to Justis Henley at QB last week proved the spark they needed, as it seems like Beck will use his athletic ability to keep defenses off balance until their starter returns. Pennridge is a stellar D headlined by monster LB Nick Tarburton, PSU commit, and is only giving up 8.2 PPG. I could see it being a battle decided in the trenches in a good, old school, Bucks-Mont battle. I’m convinced that Beck has figured out the defensive struggles that plagued the Knights against LaSalle and D-East. The QB switch will prove to be the difference this week as the Knights win on the road in a tough league game…NP 28-20

OJR (4-0) @ Perk Valley (3-1) (-6.5)

The PAC seems to be a wide open race this season with traditional big school powers Spring-Ford and Perk Valley coming back to the pack a little. OJR is having a great start to the season but haven’t played anyone yet. Perk Valley has played a much tougher schedule and owns a shutout against D-West and a good road win against Upper Dublin. The Vikings will spread OJR out and force them to cover QB Cole Peterlin in space. While they don’t have the skill they have had in years past, I expect that their depth on the O & D-lines will make the difference for the Vikings at home…Perk Valley 33-21

Good for McDevitt

I am happy for Coach Watkins and his McDevitt squad. Off to a 4-0 start and took down Cardinal O'Hara this past weekend.
Coach Watkins has some young talent on that roster. PCL Blue title is most likely out of reach this season however they have some solid building blocks set for future success.

O'Hara, however, might have set the record for the weakest preseason schedule in the PCL ever.

Week 4

Truman (3-0) vs. CR South (1-2)

Christian Jabbar (CRS QB) is one of the most under rated players in the area. Truman is a great story and a team that I think will contend for a playoff spot. But their schedule has been very soft. I expect CRS to win a close tight game late behind Jabbar.

CRS 21-20

Bensalem (3-0) vs. Abington (2-1)

The Owls go on the road for the 4th straight week. Expect a close game. Because the Owls have had nothing but close games thus far and going all the way back to last season. Look for the Owls to get some revenge on the Ghosts from last yr. They will find a way late once again.

Bensalem 20-14

Neshaminy (2-1) vs. CR North (1-2)

This game was over quick last yr. Neshaminy goes on the road for the first time this season and CRN couldn't of caught the Skins at a worse time. CRN won't have an answer for all the Skins weapons and a angry Skins team at that.

Neshaminy 35-6

Pope John Paul

I know this thread probably won't get much response but PJP literally has a chance to run the table going into their last game at Pottsgrove for the PAC10 Frontier Division title. I'm sure they are not given much chance in that game but serious kudos to this squad on their 4th straight win without a loss.

Does anyone know much about them this year and do they have a chance to make a run in District 1, AAAA?

Can't say I didn't tell you "wood stinks"

to all the slugs who came out of the rocks to back your boy wood, I told you he stinks and his OC is even worse and just a reminder for all you dopes he only won last year because they were decker's kids. Now we are seeing the real staff come out and like I said before and I will stink by my comments he stinks. So all of you owe me an apology and I will let you apologize on here if you want you slugs
