Central Dauphin beats Cumberland Valley 20-14

Big edge being home, both shaky at start with turnovers. Defense and special teams won it for Rams stopping CV at key times of game, booting 20 and 48 yard FGs, 48 yarder end of 1/2 gave momentum and lead 13-7. Stopped CV just inside 2 on 4th down to end the game. Typical CD-CV slugfest with CD matching one of more physical CV teams in a few years.

3 Games that caught my eye...Sept. 28-30

Last week: 3-0
Overall: 9-3

CB South (5-0) @ North Penn (3-2) (-9)
North Penn finally hosts a home game after a brutal opening 4 games on the road. They will take on a red hot CB South team riding on the heels of a lights out D and balanced O. Fresh off a shutout of Souderton, the Titans come in only allowing opponents 9.6 ppg. They will be tested by one of the more potent offenses in the area while also looking at sophomore QB John Consoletti starting in place of injured starter Jack Johns. While the young QB was solid last week and RB Ryan Watson has been impressive so far for CB South I doubt they will find the same success at Crawford Stadium. North Penn continues its climb back to the top of D1 6A power ratings with another win...NP 35-27

Haverford (5-0) @ Garnet Valley (5-0) (-5.5)

The Central League is about to get interesting with the first clash of title contenders matching up. Haverford still has Springfield-Delco left to face, Garnet Valley must host Marple, and Springfield before the league champion is decided. This game will go a long way in determining who will have the edge on Springfield. The Fords are coming off an impressive dismantling of Marple 35-0 last week leaving no doubt their intentions on challenging the Jags. QB Jack Ruane was on the mark completing 24-30 passes for 276 yards and 3 TD’s while running in a 4th TD. Haverford has weapons in WR/SS Jordan Mosley, committed to University of Maryland, WR Trey Blair, and WR Carrington Hooks. The Jags are mowing opponents down week after week with their vaunted ground attack leaving teams with little room for error. I think Haverford has been overlooked thus far but I bet Coach Ricci and his crew won’t make the same mistake Marple did….GV 24-16

Pennsbury (4-1) (-6) @ Bensalem (4-1)

QB Drasaun Moore leads the Owls option offense into a matchup with Pennsbury. These 2 teams are both heading towards the playoffs but a loss here could cause some sweaty palms in Lower Bucks as both teams still have challenging league games on the schedule. It looks as if the Falcons are starting to adapt to the spread offense after countless decades of “Ground and Pound”. QB Zach Demarchis has proven to be a threat in the air and on the ground most likely giving Bensalem a lot to think about on D. A loss will not eliminate either team but looking ahead, I would bet that Bensalem needs this more than Pennsbury. But, I think the Falcons are more battle tested than the Owls & are able to light up the scoreboard…Pennsbury 35-10

The West: 6A Top 10….September 27th (#1 - #5)

1 Pine Richland 5-0, D7; I guess we know who the best team in the state is now, right? The thing about an excellent team like Pine Richland is they make good teams look normal, like a superior sprinter leaving others far behind. You wouldn’t know by the score losing 54-20 but Bethel Park is a good football team with a respected head coach, a veteran, senior O-Line and good backs. But like many previous and current teams from the district, they are one-dimensional, mimicking teams like North Allegheny, Central Catholic and a number of former teams (previous 4A) now in 5A like McKeesport and USC. The problem with that is Pine Richland has moved into the modern era, discovering the forward pass. Their 34-pt win last Friday night in Bethel Park was in fact easy, scoring on 7 of their first 8 possessions, with the scoreboard showing 54-7 at halftime! Starters including Qb Phil Jurkovec were pulled at the half after he completed 19 of 23 passes for 358 yards and rushed for 3 touchdowns while throwing for 2. This wasn’t a win against Shaler or Butler! This was previously undefeated Bethel at home with a 3-0 record that included wins against Wpial power North Allegheny (3-2) 35-15, newcomer Peters Township (3-1) 28-7, Norwin (3-2) 27-7 and the season opening rout of Wayne-OH, 41-0. 4-1 Central Catholic is up next and its scary thinking this is a revenge game where the Rams may add attitude to ability. Last year’s team hung with the Vikings through 3 quarters in a 28-all tie, ultimately losing 48-35. But Quarterback Phil Jurkovec had a glove on his throwing hand (injured right thumb) and still threw for 333 yards, completing 24 of 38 passes and rushed for 94 yards! Back to this season, the big upgrade may be their line play and importantly special teams and defense. Neither were a strength last year. In fact they were a liability. Last year’s team allowed 25ppg on average through their first 5 games. This year’s allowed 62 total points! To date they’ve scored 233 points and allowed 62, for an average of 47-12 per game. And the offense has grown by a touchdown, averaging 41ppg last year. Last year’s power rating had Central Catholic favored by 11.85 points. This year show the Rams Power Rating at a hefty 347.74, a PR advantage of 21.57 points. Rams roll.
2 Cumberland Valley 4-0, D3; CV pounded out a 28-0 half time lead then coasted to a 35-13 Mid Penn Commonwealth win against Chambersburg. The well lubed Wing-T produced 326 rush yards with Penn State recruit Charlie Katshir accounting for 148 total yards while junior Qb Jared Plessinger completed 6 of 7 passes for 134 yards. The defense again dominated, holding Chambersburg to 126 yards rushing. Central Dauphin is up next, a team they’ve owned for 5 straight wins spanning 3 consecutive years. Last year saw them win 25-24 then 21-7 in the playoffs. 2015 witnessed a 24-21 win followed by the epic 7-overtime 62-61 (13 all in regulation) win in the playoffs. 2014 had them winning 7-0. Clearly when these two meet it’s about defense where both are again strong; Cumberland Valley allowing 13ppg and Central Dauphin 15. Both have substantial, versatile offenses at 35 for CV, 34 for the Rams. Junior Qb Jared Plessinger completed 51% of his passes (20/34/376) but has 4 picks to go along with 4 Tds. The backfield is talented with Jake Palmer (5-9, 190,sr) at 468 yards on 64 carries, Galen Witmer (5-9, 230, sr) at 95 yards on 22 carries and Charlie Katshir (6-3, 195, sr) their top player and Penn State recruit with 170 rush yards on 20 carries, 204 yards on 20 receptions as their leading receiver and 18 tackles from the secondary. The game is at Central Dauphin Friday night where another packed house and SRO crowd will witness the annual East Shore-West Shore battle. As always, toss it up.
3 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 4-1, D7; Nice turnaround since the opening bell rolling out 4 consecutive wins. But it was a struggle against Seneca Valley who flashed glimpses of last year’s team that surprised everyone getting to the 6A WPIAL Final. They do return some good skill people and a capable Qb in Gabe Larson. But that wasn’t enough as they fell to the Vikings 28-20. This was probably a good tune up facing the competitive Raiders before the road game with Pine Richland. Central won last year 48-35 with a much different team. They still have Troy Fisher under center who was special last year, completing 7 of 12 passes for 234 yards. Halfback JJ Younger was also key (miss him!), rushing for 152 yards and 3 Tds. But both lines were wiped out by graduation, particularly an outstanding offensive line. At this point last year, through 5 games they were 4-1, averaging 43ppg, allowing 15. That includes the reality check against national power St. John, a 35-14 loss. This year’s team averages 26 ppg while allowing 16. It’s high school football so who knows but even with a solid quarterback like Troy Fisher and some decent parts, Pine Richland looks like an obstacle too big to overcome.
4 State College 4-0, D6; Very often State College is thought of as a big, physical lumbering team. And while that description often has merit in terms of size and physicality, you can drop the “lumbering” aspect as they now have great speed at the skill positions including their quarterback. They’re beating weaker teams and face another in Carlisle this week at home before returning to Mechanicsburg to play Cumberland Valley. Last week’s 62-25 rout of Mechanicsburg High was a total blowout, with a 35-0 1st quarter score ballooning to 55-13 at the half. Penn State commit Keaton Ellis (6-0, 165, jr) and senior Brandon Clark (6-5, 200, sr) have great speed at wide-out while Tristen Lyons (5-6, 180, sr) and Isaiah Edwards (6-0, 185, so) bring the same from their running back positions. With speed everywhere and good special teams they are formidable, with every chance to repeat as the conference champion.
5 Central Dauphin 3-1, D3; Central Dauphin is looking like one cool customer following up the road win at Wilson 2 weeks ago with a total and focused destruction of Carlisle, 65-14. There is always concern in a scenario like this coming off the Wilson win with Cumberland Valley dead ahead. But they may be rounding into something new with Qb Brady Straub having another strong outing, completing 10 of 12 for 168 yards. With a 54-14 halftime lead, everyone played, including the 2 and 3 Qbs Tyrese Fuller and Nick Chimienta. By the end of the game their total yardage was 417! But now, this is the week, Cumberland Valley week, where the Rams will try to reverse an odd series of tight losses to their nemesis from the West Shore. For a team built from the ground up this season, they seem ready. Qb Straub completed 42 of 68 passes for 608 yards and 6 Tds without a pick. Battering Ram Mike Wise-Belle is almost impossible to stop at 5-10, 235 lbs and everyone can catch. But the heart and soul of a Ram team is on the defensive side where Coach McNamee puts his best players. That and special teams is what this matchup always comes down to.

Final: Neshaminy 56 - Truman 7

Don't let the score fool you -- Truman has a good team. It was one of those games where everything the 'Skins did worked and the Tigers had a hard time stringing a consistent performance together.

And what looked more like a "Flexbone" as opposed to the Delaware Winged-T (the Truman O) is tricky and the visitors lone score came on an outside sweep that showed their RBs speed (early in the game). But the Tigers had no luck up the middle and when their primary game (the run) was bottled up and they were forced to go to the air it didn't really work. As it was, the first few times Truman tossed the ball it caught Neshaminy off a bit but once they realized Truman would throw the 'Skins shut their air game down. Honestly, once the inside game was gone and with no air attack defending the outside run game was a little easier.

In the first half Neshaminy scored on 5 of their 6 possessions. Joel Stills scored three on the ground (with a couple of long ones) and Brody McAndrew hit Mike Garlick on a 50 or 60 yard pass while Leonhauser nailed a 40 yard field goal late in the second. McAndrew was right on with his passes and I think he missed just two of the maybe 10 he threw in the first two quarters (no picks and the 1 TD to Garlick).

Nershaminy's PAT efforts still need work as in the first half they missed two kicks and had another blocked but the ball was caught in the air by Cory Joyce (after the Truman player got his hand on it) who then ran it in for two. They also missed on a two point try so the facts are they were 1 for 4 on PATs after their first 4 scores (and remember they missed 4 against D-Town in their 37-33 loss).

Anyway you cut it, though, you can tell Truman is dangerous and on some of their plays it was very difficult to know who actually had the ball (they ran a double reverse that faked out everyone). So kudos to the 'Skins D for staying focused and playing position ball.

Then defensively Truman's front four are quick and they pressured McAndrews on several plays and caught Neshaminy's backs too many times before they hit the line of scrimmage.

At the half it was 30-7 for Neshaminy and they kicked off to start the second-half. Following course for the visitors, the Truman returner coughed up the ball on the tackle with a 'Skin picking up the loose ball and running it in to make it 37-7. After the following kickoff Neshaminy stopped Truman and they had to punt with another drive by the 'Skins seeing a score with McAndrew sneaking it in for 44-7 lead (that was 6 out of 7 possessions for points).

After kicking it to Truman their next drive saw a Tiger back pop it loose for a nice long run but he lost the ball when he was tackled around the 20 and it then bounced and rolled into end zone where Oleh Manzyk recovered it for the touchback.

On that next Neshaminy possession which started at their 20 (after the touchback) Savaughn Hebron (Savion's twin and one of the two Vaughn Hebron boys)ripped off a long distance run for a TD but he somersaulted into the end zone and the refs nullified the score giving Neshaminy a first and 25 at the 25 (WTF?? - isn't that a 15-yard penalty for excessive celebration). Anyway, the second teamers took it in a few plays later and the 'Skins took a knee on the PAT to make it 50-7 (that was 7 out of 8 possessions for a score).

Neshaminy's third team scored the last TD running the same play over and over and over out of I formation - the up back right up the middle (Wilmot wasn't trying anything fancy). They took a knee on the PAT and the final is 56-7.

Have you ever seen a game where one team seems to get every break and does nothing wrong and the other group can't catch a cold? That was this game. But don't count Truman out - you can see they have athletes and talent all over the place but today just wasn't their day. I'm expecting them in the playoffs and watch out for any team that sleeps on them.

By the way, the Redskins ground game has really come into its own. The first two games it was a little sketchy but with Joel Stills (sr), Savaungh and Savion Hebron (jrs), Oleh Manzyk (jr), Emmanuel Ampofo (jr), Chris James (freshmen) coming in with Mike Crescenzo (sr) it has developed nicely. I think Chris Majors (soph) has had a few handoffs too.

You know, looking down the road you have Brody McAndrew at QB (soph) with his receivers that are underclassmen including Manzyk (jr), Zach Canimore (jr), Marcus Griffin (jr) and Cory Joyce (jr) with the RBs including the Hebron brothers (jrs), Ampofo (jr), James (frosh) and Majors (soph) the skill crew is very young and will be getting nothing but better (I'm sure I'm forgetting someone). These guys are going to be a force over the next few years (in his first five starts McAndrews has about 1,150 yards with 8 TDs and only 2 picks).

Defensively Neshaminy really only slipped in the D-Town game and I think that was the cold water slap they needed (they played well today).

Wrapping it up ---- way to go 'Skins!!!
