Catholic School Programs - getting to next level

I'm interested in how Catholic schools take their football programs to the next level. I understand how private Catholic SJP and MP got where they are; I’m more interested in how the archdiocesan schools take the next step - like an Archbishop Wood. It seems like (in different years) schools like Carroll or Shanahan (who should be able to pull the required numbers of athletes from their areas) have been close to turning into really consistently successful programs, but then never really turn the corner. So what is it: scholarships, youth development, coaches, location, other things? Interested in what people think.

Mid State Football Top 30 (1-15)….Oct 17, 2018

Districts 3, 4, 5, 6
1 Manheim Central 5A 8-0

The Baron’s defense held Conestoga Valley to 10 first downs and 188 total yards (66 rushing) in a 48-7 demolition of the Bucks who at 3-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall, were thought to be a challenger before the game. But, playing Cocalico (7-2), where they lost 49-14 and Central back to back will definitely sort things out! CV had no answer for running back Tyler Flick who rushed for 286 of their 508 total yards of offense, with touchdown runs of 30, 50, 27 and 42 yards. Up next is 0-8 Garden Spot before the finale at home to Solanco’s inconsistent but dangerous Golden Mules who are currently 7th in the 5A standing with Manheim Central holding the top spot.
2 Harrisburg 6A 7-1
Kane Everson had an awesome first half, completing 9 of 10 passes for 206 yards then sat with the Cougars holding a 12-6 lead over the vastly improved Chambersburg Trojans. He left with an apparent shoulder injury of unknown severity. But the Cougar D as always was there, holding Chambersburg to 232 total yards (20 rushing) while closing things out with 2 Pick-6’s, one by Donte Kent for 49 yards in the 3rd quarter, the other by Elijah Scott of 48 yards in the 4th.. Of note, Harrisburg was down to their 3rd quarterback in safety/receiver Rynell Gantt who had never taken a snap, with Everson out and #2 John McNeil already sidelined for the game. Still, you got to credit to Chambersburg for holding Harrisburg to 302 total yards on the road. Slumping Carlisle (3-5) is next, losers of their last 5 games. Harrisburg currently hold the top seed.
3 State College 6A 7-1
This was a strange game with one momentum swing after another where the decision was finalized, sort of, when sophomore running back Dresyn Green scored on a 58 yard run at the 3:55 mark of the 4th quarter to give SC a 35-21 lead at Central Dauphin. But CD came right back, scoring on a Noah Hoffman touchdown toss to make it exciting with just over a minute to go. And that’s where it ended. What had to deflate Central Dauphin occurred well before this, when, after taking a 7-0 1st quarter lead, SC’s Tommy Friberg connected with Green for a 63 yard score, followed by their returning a CD fumble 30 yards for another touchdown, all in the span of 20 seconds to end the 1st quarter. Their new weapon, Dresyn Green, rushed for 154 yards on 16 carries (2 scores) and had 3 receptions for another 64 yards. Friberg was strong, completing 10 of 13 passes for 132 yards with 2 touchdowns. The Rams outgained them 386 to 349 but were undone by the turnover returned for a score. SC is home to Altoona who lost 4 of their last 5 games after a 2-1 start, then closes at Cumberland Valley (2-6) who showed a pulse the last 2 weeks.
4 Bishop McDevitt 4A 7-1
McDevitt had another easy Mid Penn-Keystone Division win last week, this time against Hershey (2-6) where they rolled out 558 total yards of offense (312r-246p) in a 38-3 win. Its pretty amazing seeing them top the 500 yard mark almost every week! Some stats; Chase Diehl completed 20 of 30 passes for 230 yards (2 Tds) with Nazir Burnett and Mario Easterly accounting for 82 and 77 yards respectively. CJ Reyes-Diggs was unstoppable, gaining 224 yards on 19 carries for 2 touchdowns. Hershey was held to 84 total yards. 1-7 Mechanicsburg is next averaging 8ppg. Some of the locals feel it’s time for McDevitt to move back to the Mid Penn Commonwealth for some real competition. Wouldn’t that be something, seeing them again in the mix with State College, Cumberland Valley, Central Dauphin, Harrisburg, CD East and a rejuvenated Chambersburg program.
5 Manheim Township 6A 7-1
Manheim Township got an unexpected battle from quirky Cedar Crest (4-4) with Jack Rodenberger saving the day kicking a 35 yards field goal as time expired to force overtime. Even here the Streaks got a nod from the football gods following their drive when Qb Harrison Kirk fumbled into the end zone where running back Cam Horst recovered for the 16-10 win. Nice first year for Kirk, completing 59% for 1610 yards with a 13/3 ratio. Jaden Floyd was out with an injury while Horst carried the load for 82 yards on 14 carries. Credit the Falcons for bringing it, banging out 168 on the ground with Qb Logan Horn pecking away with 12 completions on 23 attempts for 118 yards, then rushing for another 60 yards. He makes things exciting in Lebanon! Nice D effort too, holding Township to 90 yards rushing. The Streaks are home Friday against J.P. McCaskey, currently with the 2 seed.
6 Central Dauphin 6A 5-3.
Fullback Adam Burkhart had an impressive performance against State College, rushing for 196 yards on 29 carries for 3 touchdowns with Tyler Leisher adding another 76 on 10 carries. But as the Rams fell short at home, losing to the Lions in a key division game 35-28. See SC above. Noah Hoffman completed 12 of 18 for 86 yards and a score as they piled up 386 yards of offense to SC’s 349. They close out the season with two road games, playing at Chambersburg Friday then archrival CD East the following week and Landis Field. They currently have the 4th seed.
7 Berks Catholic 4A 6-2
Berks Catholic’s special teams put the first two touchdowns on the board when Abdul MacFoy returned the opening kickoff 68 yards and Jaden Bookser fell on a blocked punt in the end zone, propelling the Saints to a 41-0 halftime lead and yet another mercy rule win against Schuylkill Valley 41-7. Like Southern Columbia and McDevitt in Harrisburg, it’d be nice seeing them move to a conference where there is real competition that clearly doesn’t exist now. Easier said than done! BC is presently 3-0, winning by an average score of 53-5 against Hamburg, Kutztown and SV. 1-7 Fleetwood is next who has already lost to Hamburg and SV! BC holds the 4th seed.
8 Warwick 5A 6-2
Warwick did a number on Wilson last week, taking them apart to the tune of 601 total yards of offense, repeat….601 total yards of offense in a surprisingly easy 38-12 rout of the Lancaster Lebanon Section-1 alpha. Sophomore Qb Joey McCracken (6-2, 170) unleashed their vaunted air attack, throwing for touchdowns of 53, 59, 85, 99 and 85 yards on the way to a record setting 530 yards passing. Wow! And you gotta wonder what coach said at half time with the Warriors leading 17-12, then reeling off 21 3rd quarter points to blow it open. The win keeps them atop the LL-1 at 4-1 with Wilson and Manheim Township at 3-1. Conestoga Valley (10th seed) is next. They’re a capable 5-3 team coming off back-to-back losses to power teams Cocalico and Manheim Central. Warwick currently holds the 6th slot for 5A Districts.
9 Southern Columbia 2A 8-0
Southern continued their march through the Heartland Conference unchallenged, dismantling Shikellamy 69-7 to go 4-0 in conference action. Part of the reason they are so dominant is a lineup filled with record setting players. Quarterback Stone Hollenbach is their All Time leading passer, junior Julian Fleming their All Time leading receiver while another junior, linebacker Cal Haladay is their All Time leading tackler. Conference action continues at home against Hughesville who at 0-8 is struggling, scoring 80 points the entire season. Come on Southern, play someone in your non-conference games. Berks Catholic did in scheduling Exeter Twp, Central Dauphin, McDonogh and Malvern Prep.
10 Cocalico 5A 6-2
A half time score of 48-0 tells the story with Cocalico winning another LL-2 win against Garden Spot (0-8), 55-21. Qb Noah Palm ran for 120 yards and 4 touchdowns while slot back Ronald Zalm had 2 touchdowns and 98 yards rushing as the Eagles pounded out 284 yards on the ground in the 1st half alone before letting the subs play the entire 2nd half. While they have a good one in Qb Palm, they are one-dimensional, running 77% of the time. But it’s hard arguing 259 yards rushing a game. At 3-1 in-conference and currently holding the 2nd seed, they remain a game behind 4-0 Manheim Central (top seed) who defeated them 41-23 in Denver. This week sees them playing a near mirror image of themselves in Solanco (6-2) who also play old school football, rushing 91% of the time. And they do it well, averaging 416 yards per game! These Mules have some kick and are currently 7th seeded behind 2nd place Cocalico, well positioned for the 5A postseason.
11 Cedar Cliff 5A 6-2
The 5th seeded Colts had no trouble with Mechanicsburg (1-7), routing the Wildcats 56-7 to go 4-0 in the MP-Keystone, a game ahead of Bishop McDevitt. Jaheim Morris had 208 yards rushing, bringing his season total to 1098 yards while Qb Chris Dare stayed super-hot, completing 13 of 16 passes for 156 yards. His 3 game totals are 35 of 43 for 525 yards, with a Td-Pick ratio of 8 to 0. At 68% completion percentage, throwing for 1728 yards on the season with a Td-Pick stat of 28 to 2, he is one of the more talented quarterbacks in central Pennsylvania. This week’s action finds them in Harrisburg for a key division game against co-leader Susquehanna Township (4-0, 6-2), who have been on fire since opening the season with losses to Manheim Central and Milton Hershey.
12 Chambersburg 6A 6-2
Chambersburg gave it a run staying right with highly regarded Harrisburg in a bitter division matchup before falling 28-13. See Harrisburg above. Brady Stumbaugh was pretty much the entire attack, completing 14 of 24 passes for 192 yards, while the Cougars held their powerful ground game in check, limiting the Mid Penn-Commonwealth’s leading rusher Keyshawn Jones to 19 yards on 11 carries! Without a running game, Harrisburg pinned their ears, pressuring Stumbaugh into too many hurries and 2 Pick 6’s. Still, The Trojans held Harrisburg to 98 yards rushing and 302 total yards. What the game showed us is Chambersburg has become a competitor in the division which is saying something. It also confirmed Harrisburg has a rock solid rush defense. Next up is another tough divisional game against Central Dauphin, coming in with some attitude following their narrow loss at home to State College. The Trojans hold the 5th seed.
13 Wilson 6A 5-3
Qb Anthony Futrick completed 17 of 31 passes for 214 yards but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors of Warwick pounded them 38-12 in a critical league game. The Bulldogs mustered 359 total yards that might win a number of games but not against Warwick’s high flying aerial assault that blitzed them for 530 yards through the air with a sophomore quarterback. Sophomore! Wilson better adjust or be scrambling the way the entire SEC is addressing Alabama’s quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. They’re home Friday with the 7th seed to schizophrenic Cedar Crest (4-4, 11th seed) who’s coming off a 16-10 overtime loss to Manheim Township. CC has some weapons but this is probably the wrong week to be going into West Lawn after leaving it on the field against Township in ot….against a Wilson bunch coming off an embarrassing loss.
14 Middletown 3A 7-1
Middletown jumped on winless Trinity for a 35-0 half time lead before pulling the starters then settling in for an easy 42-0 win. The tandem backfield of Jose Lopez and Richie Sykes led the charge again, rushing for 104 and 116 yards respectively. M-town finished with 480 total yards of offense while holding the Shamrocks to 110 total yards. They’re at East Pennsboro next who is really struggling at 3-5, coming off last year’s 9-3 outing in a major rebuild. They finish up at home against Palmyra (3-1, 7-1, 9th seed-5A) who’s a game back after losing last week to Milton Hershey. Middletown currently has the 2nd seed behind resurgent and undefeated Lancaster Catholic.
15 Red Lion 6A 6-2
Zach Mentzer completed 13 of 20 passes for 177 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 45 yards in a 48-21 rout of New Oxford. Randy Fizer caught 5 of those passes for 104 yards with 2 scores, one rushing, allowing the Lions to remain deadlocked with York, Central York and Dallastown at 4-1 atop the York Adams-1. Spring Grove (1-7) is next, a town that used to be called Paper Town that gave off an incredibly foul odor when the mill was cooking all the way over to the mountains! After Spring Grove, the Lions conclude the regular season at D-town. Red Lion currently holds the 6th seed.

solfootballfan and others....Power Ratings per your list below.

Power Ratings:

I’ll use Coatesville as an eg of how the numbers are conjured up. Boring stuff with numerous linkage games, as many as possible attempting to measure strength through a deeper look into schedules. All is fluid pended coming games. Here’s how they line up.

Coatesville 161.00
Small sample size here (Downingtown East pending) with few real tests excepting Harrisburg, Middletown South (?) and Downingtown West.
** Harrisburg provides linkage games (quality teams they defeated) to Central Dauphin, State College, Chamberburg and Cedar Cliff, with CD linking to Berks Catholic, Wilson and Manheim Township; State College linking to St. Augustine Prep; Chambersburg linking to Red Lion; Cedar Cliff linking to Governor Mifflin, Bishop McDevitt and Cocalico.
** Downingtown West provides linkage games (quality teams they defeated) to Perkiomen Valley, Neshaminy and Downingtown East, with Perkiomen Valley linking to Pennridge; Neshaminy linking to North Penn, Pennridge (again) and Truman; Downingtown East linking to Roman to get to the PCL.
NOTES: Where it gets subjective is defining a quality team. That’s critical since those teams are the basis for compiling numbers. So, is a team like Souderton at 4-4 used after looking terrible the first 3 then switching gears discovering an offense going 4-1 with a 2-pt loss to North Penn? How about CB West at 2-6, losing games by 2, 3, 6 and 7 points? Some decisions are easy; you don’t count the win over floundering Cumberland Valley. And while Middletown South is a great program, I’m not sure they’re a representative team and didn’t count them. I counted Souderton but not CB West.

North Penn 154.00
Challenging schedule but won all including multiple close calls. Highest number of bonus points per schedule difficulty, 30.
Garnet Val 152.60
Like North Penn, won the close ones benefitting by 3 of the 4 teams used being at home. Earned 15 bonus points per schedule difficulty.
Dtown West 139.90
Used Perk Val, Neshaminy, Coatesville and DEast with the number taking a dive per 42-14 Cville loss but recovering with DEast win. Qb Howard?
Haverford 132.66
Small sample size using G-Val and Radnor (Springfield next, Ridley pending) that impacted bonus points negatively, e.g., North Penn got 30, Haverford 7. Huge win v Radnor plus 5 straight gets your attention. O can be huge.
Spg Ford 132.61
Used Wayne Valley, Wilson and Exeter. Only loss at Wilson. Nice non-conf schedule. Perk Val next.
Truman 130.85
Only loss a good one vs CR South where they were banged up, shorthanded. Have learned to win the close ones, beating Skins and Falcons in close calls.
Perk Val 127.08
Strong non-conference games. Tight loss to DWest in opener 44-33 where a Pick-6 sealed it. Different story vs DEast following week where Cougars roughed them up, especially on the ground. Other game used was Pennridge. Haven’t been tested recently. Spring Ford next.
Up Darby 126.68
Small sample size, Springfield and MLK hurt “schedule” bonus points with Ridley and G-Val ahead. Ridley ok’d per ot loss to Springfield and winning 4 straight impressively. Royals D under rated.
Dtown East 125.16
Low rating reflects unchallenging schedule and 21 point loss to DWest after 7-0 start. Get a quality game road test 10/26 at Coatesville.

Here are few others not on that list.
Qtown 136.93
Pennsbury 135.77
Souderton 133.59
Pennridge 132.13
CR South 130.13
Neshaminy 130.09
CB East 125.66
Ridley 122.64

Mid State Football Top 30 (16-30....plus)….Oct 17, 2018

Districts 3, 4, 5, 6
16 Central York 6A 7-1

It’s that time of year where the contenders separate from pretenders, finding who can handle myriad injuries and pressure cooker settings of playoff-like division games, particularly on the road. That’s the case in the York-Adams where 4 teams were deadlocked in a 1st place tie with a third of the season to go. Northeastern played a respectable slate of teams against Mifflin County and Dallastown on the road with tough Solanco and Red Lion coming to Manchester. Unfortunately, that’s where they got everyone’s attention, upsetting Red Lion 23-16, including that of Central York who lost to Red Lion 56-28 a few weeks before. Needless to say the Panthers didn’t overlook the Bobcats as evidenced by their 448 yards of offense on the road against a competent team. Delaware commit Qb Cade Pribula had the laser focus as well, completing 13 of 19 passes for 319 yards. He has two speedy deep threats in Taylor Wright Rawls (755 yards) who had 6 receptions for 160 yards and Saahir Cornelius (695) who had 2 for 76 yards, along with a sure handed TE in Reid Hershiner (284 yards). G/DE Ian McNaughton, a 6-1, 210 junior, got in on the fun in their power package scoring on a 1-yd plunge as the Panthers rolled 44-9. Central’s final two games, as the current 3rd seed, will test them at home vs Dallastown (5-3) then away at York (7-1) to close things out.
17 York (William Penn) 5A 7-1
4th seeded York bounced back from the 21-20 loss at Red Lion with an easy win at home against winless South Western, 49-21. With their lead rusher Dayjure Stewart leaving the game early, Tobee Stokes (5-10, 160, jr) got the call and came through with 204 yards rushing on 25 carries for 4 touchdowns. They travel to Northeastern (4-4) Friday to see if the Bobcats have anything left after last week’s 44-9 loss to Central York. That’s a tall order for the Bobcats trying to hold on to the 13th seed vs the quick and talented Bearcat attack.
18 Dallastown 6A 5-3
First year Coach Ron Miller is having quite a year with his young group hanging in the playoff picture in the 8th slot and coming off a powerful 63-24 win at Spring Grove. Everyone got in on the action with the score 56-12 at the half. Running back Nyzair Smith continued to impress gaining 398 yards with 3 touchdowns. But there are no more easy games left for Dtown with Central York and Red Lion remaining on the schedule. They’re at Central York Friday who apart from reeling off 4 straight since losing to Red Lion is also looking for a high seed in the postseason. This is the Wildcats last home game of the regular season where you know they’ll be pumped.
19 Susquehanna Township 4A 6-2
Susquehanna Township got their 6th straight win, defeating Red Land 42-7 to keep pace with Cedar Cliff atop the Keystone at 4-0. They also currently have the 4th seed. Like many teams, they’ve shown steady progress over the last 8 weeks and are not the same group that took the field for opening losses to Manheim Central and Milton Hershey. Central is Central but Milton Hershey might not want a return visit against the team they edged 7 weeks ago 14-8. They could get a rematch in Districts. Hanna held Red Land to 12-1st downs and 106 yards rushing, while featuring a balanced attack that rushed for 208 yards and threw for 113. A 21-0 1st quarter knocked the Patriots lights out when Rexroth Garced had a 56 yard touchdown (jet sweep) followed by his 56 yard punt return for another score. Great scheduling this year sees Cedar Cliff (4-0, 6-2) traveling to Harrisburg Friday night in a game whose outcome will crown the Mid Penn Keystone champ. The Colts won last year 17-14 in Camp Hill but its a lot different taking on the North Side guys this time of year at their place.
20 Governor Mifflin 5A 5-3
Freshman running back Nick Singleton ran for 22, 90 and 63 yard touchdowns as the Mustangs overwhelmed Lower Dauphin 21-0 in the 1st quarter on the way to a 48-7 non-conference win. This was their 5th straight win, fueled in part by the freshman’s development and a maturing offensive line averaging 6-1, 245. But how about this freshman, scooting for 245 yards (!) on 11 carries, taking his total to 1048 yards for the year. Here’s another bit of fortunate scheduling that sees Governor Mifflin, 4-0 in the Berks-1, playing Exeter, 3-1 and Conrad Weiser 5-0 the last two games of the regular season. They’re at rival Exeter Friday who is another one of those teams, with narrow road losses to Spring Ford, 33-27 in overtime and Weiser 23-12 preventing a 7-1 record. They lost the opener to Berks Catholic 31-7. Looks like one of the better games this week and a toss-up with Exeter (16th seed) coming on strong with their up tempo attack fighting for a playoff spot, as are the Mustangs at the 11th slot.
21 Conrad Weiser 4A 6-2
Weiser responded to the road loss last week at Susquehanna Township with a 49-23 win against Reading. Alex McKenzie was their big gun throwing 4 touchdowns while completing 10 of 13 passes for 134 yards. Their Total O of 312 was a tribute to a 1-8 Reading squad who hung tough, getting 302 total yards of their own, and the Scouts being a little banged up from the game last week. Who isn’t banged up this time of year? Muhlenberg is next and are just what the doctor ordered at 0-8, allowing for a number of starters to recover with the big road game at Governor Mifflin the following week. CW is currently slotted 5th behind Berks Catholic.
22 Exeter Township 5A 5-3
Twin Valley had no answer for Exeter’s up-tempo offense, falling behind 26-0 in the 1st quarter with no offense of their own to respond. The Eagles were flying all over the field, holding TV to 62 yards of offense while they pounded out 262 on the ground. Steven Rose rushed for 110 yards with Jeremiah Nixon getting 90 on 12 carries. Kolby Haag took care of the air lanes completing 10 of 12 passes for 148 yards and 5 touchdowns. When the dust settled, Exeter (16th seed) had a 54-0 Berks Inter County-Section 1 win (3-1) and 410 total yards of offense. They’ve got a showdown Friday at home against Section-1 kingpin Governor Mifflin who beat them last year 28-14.
23 Mount Carmel 2A 6-2
The winningest team in Pennsylvania got their 3rd in a row last week when they easily defeated South Williamsport (4-4) 55-15. About South, if it wasn’t for a difficult schedule, they wouldn’t have one, with losses coming against 6-2 Muncy, 8-0 Southern Columbia, 5-3 Central Columbia and MCA last week. The same can be said for the Red Tornadoes with losses to Southern and North Schuylkill (7-1, 3A, D-11). But they’ll be a load in the postseason with big Tom Reisinger at 6-4, 210 under center and running back Johnny Ayres 5-10, 190 (938 rushing) behind a large and veteran line. Excluding the loss to Southern, they’re allowing 12ppg. Bloomsburg (5-3) is next on the road before Shamokin.
24 Milton Hershey 4A 7-1
What a great win for Milton Hershey going to Palmyra for a 28-14 decision while maintaining the 2 seed for the 4A District-3 playoffs. Palmyra was held to 194 yards of offense while Na’eem Cross had 142 rushing himself, with teammate Chiago Anyanwu getting 80 yards on 6 carries. They are one of the top tandems in the Mid Penn, right with Middletown’s duo. Quarterback Tigere Mavesere went 4 of 4 for 88 yards. Defensively DT Josiah Gibbs at 5-10 230 plugs things up and leads a veteran defensive front. This is a nice veteran team whose only loss was to Middletown 32-21. They are currently seeded 2nd, home to 1-7 Camp Hill Friday.
25 Hempfield 6A 4-4
Hempfield won 3 of their last 4 with last week’s 37-6 win against McCaskey allowing them to salvage a 1-3 start. Nice job by Coach Ron Zieber as things could have gone south playing in the Lancaster Lebanon’s Section-1 with a non-conference slate of Manheim Central, Central York, Dallastown and Lampeter Strasburg. Running back Matt Hueston gained 149 of their 236 yards rushing with the defense in shut down mode holding JPM to 88 yards rushing and 54 passing. Penn Manor (1-7) is next in Landisville for the Black Knights first home game since September 21st. They’re presently on the outside looking in with the 9th seed.
26 Shippensburg 5A 7-1
Rivals Shippensburg and Northern got together for a Mid Penn-Colonial showdown last week in Shippensburg where a major defensive struggle ensued until the very end when star running back Adam Houser plunged into the end zone in the 4th quarter for the only score of the game. He ended with 104 yards on 22 carries with Jacob Loy adding 102 yards on 20 attempts. Ship’s offense had 17-1st downs to Northern’s 6. Nothing came easy with the Greyhounds gaining 252 total yards to Northern’s 151, benefitting with 2 Polar Bear turnovers. This was a big win for the Hounds, keeping them atop the Colonial at 4-1 with Mifflin County and West Perry at 3-1. Northern falls to 2-2 with Waynesboro but has the 12th seed. They’re at 1-7 Red Land Friday, currently holding the 3 seed behind Manheim Central and Cocalico.
27 Lancaster Catholic 4A 8-0
Northern Lebanon found themselves in a 35-7 hole at halftime, something you can’t do with LC’s active defense allowing 211 yards a game, 2nd in the LL behind Manheim Central. Terrance Derr threw enough to keep Northern honest, completing 5 of 9 for 87 yards with the running backs doing the real damage, rushing for 294 yards. Gavin Sullivan and Jeffrey Harley are their big guns with Sullivan getting 89 yards on 10 carries. With a total yardage advantage of 381 to 133, you know the subs took over early as the Crusaders won easily, 52-7, to remain atop the LL-2 at 7-0 ahead of Elco at 6-1. They’re at Donegal (5-3 Mt. Joy) whose coming off a 35-14 win against Annville Cleona, fighting for a 4A playoffs spot with the 10th seed.
28 Delone Catholic 2A 8-0
Quarterback Evan Brady threw for 146 yards and 3 touchdown passes with Logan Brown having touchdown runs of 8, 44 and 45 yards plus a 6 yard TD reception as the Squires blew past Fairfield’s 1-6 Green Knights 57-3. Kind of sad seeing a little school like Fairfield (pop. 535) field just 21 players. It’s a beautiful place right at the base of Jack’s Mountain in the Blue Ridge, 8 miles west of Gettysburg. Delone travels to York Catholic Friday who is also undefeated, tied with the Squires atop the York Adams-3. It’ll be a war with Delone holding the top seed and Catholic the 2nd as they sort things out for the 2A District-3 playoffs. They’ll pack them in for the Squires and Fighting Irish.
29 Palmyra 5A 7-1
Palmyra dropped from 26th to 29th after losing at home to Milton Hershey 28-14. It was over at the half when they fell behind 21-0, making for a steep uphill battle with the Spartans holding all the cards behind a great ground game. See Milton Hershey above. Palmyra is still in the thick of things for Districts where they are currently 9th in a field of 14. They’ll cruise Friday at winless Trinity then finish on the road at Middletown.
30 Hollidaysburg 5A 4-4
The Golden Tigers rejoin the rankings with others dropping out and winning their last 2 games. The season has been an up-hill climb, opening with 4 Mid Penn teams including Altoona, Mifflin County, State College and Cedar Cliff, then undefeated Fort Hill-MD. Last week’s win came against one of District-6’s historic powers in Tyrone (4-4), 28-13. At 4-4, Hollidaysburg has faced one of the more difficult schedules in central Pennsylvania. Against Tyrone, Qb Brady Walters completed 9 of 13 passes for 133 yards, and has a 56% completion rate for 1284 yards. But his Td-Pick ratio is 11 to 9, making him a better rusher than thrower. He had 134 yards rushing last week on 19 carries and 488 yards for the year. They’re at home this week to 3-5 Dubois then finish the season at Martinsburg Central.
TIE
Solanco 5A 6-2,

Solanco defeated rival Lampeter Strasburg last week 48-27, jumping out to an insurmountable 34-7 lead at the half. LS had a decent passing game with Sean Taggert connecting on 11 of 22 passes for 251 yards and 2 touchdown. They rushed for another 141 yards. But Solanco’s Mules wear you done, pounding it 56 times using 5 and 6 backs, accumulating 425 yards rushing. That’s painful playing both ways having to face that. Their lead rusher is quarterback Joel McGuire who had 220 yards on 19 carries and 4 touchdowns. LS came back with 20 2nd half points but it wasn’t enough as Solanco won back the “Mike Jug” lost in last year’s embarrassing 46-0 defeat. They are currently 7th in a field of 14 for the postseason with the misfortune of playing LL-2 leaders and the #2 and #1 seeded Cocalico and Manheim Central to close out the season. They’re at Denver Friday against Cocalico.

Gettysburg 4A 6-2, 8th seeded Warriors rolling with 5 straight behind high powered O that even McDevitt couldn’t slow (48-35). Ammon Robinson at 9.4ypc.

District 4
Playoff Note:

Home to Wallenpaupack (5-3), a veteran team that’s a 1 and 2-pt loss away from 7-1; competitive loss to D2 power Valley View (8-0, 4A).
District 5 and 6

http://www.piaad6.org/6fbpage.htm
Ligonier Valley D6 2A 8-0,
Another powerful team from D6, going 44-5 the last 4 years, overwhelming teams again this year by an average score of 51-10. At Blairsville.
Richland Township D6 2A 8-0, Carbon copy of Ligonier Valley, unchallenged by an average score of 47-11. Home to Penn Cambria.
Chestnut Ridge D5 2A 8-0, Not as large at 29ppg Ligonier or Richland offensively but impervious defensively, allowing 8ppg. Tough ending at Bishop Guilfoyle then home to Richland Twp.

SJP 49 - Wood 14 (Final)

Honestly, a bit surprised by this one as I thought Wood would hang with them. I was thinking a few mistakes or turnovers could hurt the Prep and lead to a tight game. The Prep defense looks stoudt, though maybe suspectiple to a good passing game. Wood is hindered with being a bit one-dimensional with injuries, but still surprising. The Hawks have lots of horses on offense and McCord seems mature beyond his years. Tough seeing anyone staying with them until the State semis. A battle against the Western rep and (if they can get by) likely the looming Coatesville will be very interesting tests. With lots of underclassmen, this program looks loaded for the next several years.

PCL Red and Blue

I'm interested in some trends among the schools in the PCL (larger and smaller) and would appreciate information about 1) which schools have JV teams playing at least five games, 2) which schools have freshman teams playing at least five games, 3) whether the total number of kids playing in a school's football program has been increasing or decreasing significantly in the last five years, especially in relation to a school's total enrollment, and 4) whether attendance at a school's varsity games has been increasing, decreasing, or staying about the same in the last five years.

Obviously, no one will have all or most of the answers--except Huck, maybe--but maybe enough bits of information will come forward to create something of an overall picture. Or maybe not. Thanks.

D1 6A Football top 3...

I want to know who will be the #1 seed in playoffs? There i no question CV should be at the top of the list, but with the way piaa does its rankings its looking like NP will get it. IS there any chance CV could get the 1? I would love a detailed response this this one.

Also, as of right now the top 3 in 6a are NP, CV, and Garnet... how do these teams look right now? Could Garnet or NP give coatsville a run for there money?

Games tomorrow night?

Where is everyone going tomorrow night? I will be at the Downingtown East vs Downingtown West Game. I want to see how West does with out the QB. I think it will be a close one. Wests D matches up well against the one dimensional East squad.

If anyone wants to catch up for a cold one before Kick I will be at the Station Tap Room on Lincoln highway across from the train station.

Q&A with McKeesport running back Quaran Sayles

How has the season been going so far?
“The season has been going well so far. There are a couple of things we can get better at, but it’s good.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“Staying humble and executing our assignments every week.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“No colleges at the moment that I know of.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up has always been LSU.”

Q&A with General McLane defensive back Ben Howe-Jones

How has the season been going so far?
“The season has been going great. We clinched the region as well as the #1 seed for D10 5A.”

Who is your next opponent? What are your thoughts on them overall?
“Our opponent is Seneca. We aren’t sure if we will play them or not with the few numbers of kids they have. We are hoping that they are healthy enough, so we can play them.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“I think we can improve in our secondary.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“I think for us to be successful, we need to not turn the ball over. We’ve beaten ourselves more than I feel like than opponents have beaten us. We also need to lock down in our secondary. If we want to make a run after D10, we need to have a solid secondary. The teams in WPIAL are explosive.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I would like to play college football. That would be my primary decision. If football wouldn’t work out, I would go to college for hurdling.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Toledo.”

Do you have plans for game day trips this fall?
“I was invited to go to an unofficial visit to Toledo on the 20th. I plan on going.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I always liked watching Syracuse play. Pitt was a favorite because it is so close. Also, with James Conner coming from D10, it was always fun watching him play.”
