Neumann-Goretti vs West Catholic - Who you got?

Premier showdown with the Burrs visiting South Philly to take on the Saints. I haven't seen West yet this year but from a distance they seem to be back to playing winning football down there. NG still trying to hit their stride and may have finally found it after pounding an undefeated Bishop McDevit last week. West had their hands full against Lansdale Catholic but that may have been a case of the "looking aheads" before taking on NG. I expect a tough battle with NG coming up on the winning side. Albie vs Fluck. Who you got?

Neumann-Goretti survives a tough and game O'Hara

NG, down at the half, survived a tough and game O'Hara squad. O'Hara pulled out all the stops but they pulled them a little too early. With the aid of a couple of trick plays O'Hara was able to jump out to a 2 TD lead but when the tricks were played they just didn't have the horses too keep up with a more talented NG squad. NG will have to bring it's A game when the stakes get higher but they have not only the talent to overcome some obstacles but also the heart. The more I watch these kids the more I like. They know they can play better and they're disappointed when they don't but more importantly they know when they may not be playing up to their standards and they work to fix it. Credit to coaching and kids all around.

Coatesville at Downingtown East

A matchup of Chesmont and District 1 heavyweights w Coatesville 7-1 and DEast at 8-0. DEast has played the more difficult schedule with a quality wins against North Penn and Unionville (who could be the top 5A District 1 team and a separate threat in itself). Coatesville’s offense and defense have been excellent other than an early season close 21-14 loss to traditional state power Cumberland Valley vs DEast dominant run game and dominant run stop defense. Some say let’s see Coatesville explosive offense against a solid team. Can Coatesville defense get through the mammoth DEast o line and slow the run game? Will be answered Friday night. Who wins?

3 Games that caught my eye...Oct. 20-21

Last week: (3-0)
Overall: (20-3)
Record ATS: 16-7

This week brings some more playoff type football to Southeastern PA. Three league championships are on the line (PCL Red, Central, Ches-Mont National) as heavyweights get primed for November football. Just added this week (for Stalker) is the record Against the Spread for the season so far. Let's hope I can keep it going this week.

Coatesville (7-1) (-9.5) @ Downingtown East (8-0)
The Ches-Mont National Division comes down to these two teams once again as the Red Raiders and Cougars do battle in what should be an interesting contrast in styles. Coatesville features a quick strike offense that hits you from every direction. Coatesville has scored 42+ in 6 straight games with their starters sitting most of the 2nd half in each. Load the box to stop dynamic RB Aaron Young and watch QB Ricky Ortega throw darts all over the field. If you try to play coverage on their speedy wide outs, then Ortega and Young will run wild on a 6 or 7 man box. So what’s a team supposed to do? Well DEast will do what they do-run the ball right at Coatesville and make them play physical smash mouth football for 4 quarters. The DEast running game is a three headed monster that’s churned out over 2,200 yards already this season. With not only a league championship on the line but 6A playoff seeding as well, this will be a primetime game. Kottmeyer Stadium will be jam packed and loud for this one. Don't be surprised if the winner of this game ends up being the odds on favorite for the District 1 6A title. I’ll pick…Coatesville 38-27

LaSalle (6-1) vs St. Joe’s Prep (6-0) (-3.5)
PCL Red Division rivals meet again, for what will feel like a State Semi-Final game as the winner may establish themselves as the leader for the spot in the 6A title game from the East. St. Joe’s Prep has played a brutal non-league schedule and come through unfazed beating Tampa Jesuit and St. Peter’s Prep of NJ. The Hawks have done it with great D and a balanced offense led by QB Marquez McCray. They don’t have the 5 star big play ability of D’Andre Swift but don’t sleep on the duo of soph Kolbe Burrell and junior Marques Mason. The Hawks D is as good as it gets only giving up a little over a touchdown a game at 7.3 ppg. LaSalle is always ready for the Prep and this game is close in years even when it shouldn’t be. LaSalle is steady on O and stingy on D led by LB Liam Trainor and DL Garrett Zobel. My gut is telling me that LaSalle is flying under the radar with a backup QB who has excelled in his new role. Don't be surprised if the winner of this match up isn't favored if (when) they meet a second time in the playoffs. I’ll pick a mild upset here and go with…LaSalle 20-14

Springfield (8-0) @ Garnet Valley (8-0) (-2.5)
Central League bragging rights are on the line in this big time match up in Delco. The top seeds in 5A and 6A battle for a chance at an outright league championship. The Cougars bring a fast physical defense loaded with playmakers as evidenced by their 4 INT’s last week vs. Marple. They will be tested by the Garnet Valley split back veer with multiple options that can hurt you. The one-two punch of seniors Danny Guy and Matt Lassik has kept teams off balance all season but recently QB Cole Palis has proven a spark for the Jags. Springfield will be ready for the option game but they must be solid on O as well as they will most likely have to make the most of every possession. Look for Delco’s leading rusher Ja’Den McKenzie to keep the chains moving and challenge the Jags D. This is one has the makings of an all-time classic battle and it’s tough to pick between two teams who seem so evenly matched. Well, here goes my best guess…Springfield 26-24

Oh no Donny the Dummy at it again

Doubling down on the call to the fallen soldier and what was said. Multiple sources now going against what the dotard is saying. And what does bringing up what the past presidents did or did not do have to do with what he is doing ,what a chump. Making America great again yea right. At least the Goldman Sachs people are getting ricer and that jackass Bannon has a platform now awesome, don't we have a nuclear war to get ready for

The West: 6A Top 10….October 18th (#1 -#5)

Form held except for Central Dauphin who crashed and burned against Harrisburg High, losing 48-10 in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game at home, knocking them out of the West Top 10. The rest won by an average score of 43-11. About Harrisburg (5A, 7-0), they are crushing everyone by a combined score of 348-34, with wins against Imhotep (7-1) 33-14, Harrisburg-McDevitt (5-2) 35-0, Central Dauphin (4-3) 48-10 and CD East (5-2) 45-7. Giving you some idea of the strength of teams in other classifications, consider Cathedral Prep (4A, 8-0), who is even more impressive with a wicked schedule showing wins against Pittsburgh Central Catholic (6-2) 40-7, Detroit De La Salle (6-2, MI) 33-23, Benedictine (5-3, OH) 62-28, Erie High (6-2) 38-0 and McDowell (4-4) 63-7 by an average score of 51-13. Phew! Too bad they dropped down in class a few years ago as they’d challenge for the 6A title, being favored in some circles.

1 Pine Richland 8-0, D7; The Rams went on the road to beat hapless Shaler 49-0 where Phil Jurkovec was special again completing 16 of 19 passes for 246 yards and 2 touchdowns. This brings his total career passing yards to 6357. They’re home this week against Butler (2-5) who is coming off a 7-6 loss to Norwin. The Golden Tornado gave them a game last year before dropping a 28-13 decision. A bit about Butler; They have not had a winning season in 20 years but returned a nice core of 7 to each side this year including two running backs, a quarterback returning from a season injury from last year and one of the top lineman in the state. At 6-4, 290 pounds, Jake Kradel had offers from a number of schools including Pitt, West Virginia, Ucla, Ohio State, Va Tech and Maryland. He opted for Pitt. Don’t get many chances to mention programs like Butler. After Butler comes the conference finale against North Allegheny who is 4-1 in the Northern 7, tied with Central Catholic with the Rams on top at 4-0. Penn Hills is behind them at 3-2. It all gets sorted out the final week of the regular season with the Rams at North Allegheny and Penn Hills at Central Catholic.

2 Cumberland Valley 6-1, D3; “Big Red” had it going Friday night when the Thundering Herd from Carlisle came in all full of themselves with a 4-2 record before exiting after a 37-7 thumping. The Eagles ran at will, pounding out 319 yards on the ground while taking the “thunder” out of the Herd, holding them to 68 yards rushing and 66 up top. CV has always taken particular joy in whooping up on their next door neighbor. The bad news is PSU commit Charlie Katshir who rushed for 3 Tds and 108 yards left with his arm in a sling. (Had a torn labrum last year all season, repaired last winter) This week see them home to Lower Dauphin (cross over game) who upset them last year in a major upset 15-10. Then it’s back to the business at hand sorting out the Mid Penn Commonwealth with road games at CD East and Harrisburg.

3 Bethel Park 6-1, D7; Bethel really got it together last week thumping Canon McMillan 48-16 with Tanner Volpatti running for 103 yards on 16 carries, netting 3 touchdowns. But the big story may be sophomore quarterback Anthony Chiccitt (6-1, 170) now starting and having a strong outing completing 10 of 13 passes for 282 yards. This sheds a whole new light on the Black Hawks with a passing game to compliment their big senior O-line and the strong running of Tanner Volpatti and John Doleno….and changes the Wpial dynamic. Look out Lebo! But first there’s a road trip to 2-6 Altoona before deciding the Southeastern Conference the following week at Mt. Lebanon.

4 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 6-2, D7; Defense and special teams were all the Vikings needed to dismember Altoona last week, returning 2 interceptions for scores by Khalil Weathers and Gavin Thomson (2 called back!)….and returning a punt 60 yards by Cam Laconi for another score in a 59-14 rout of the Mountain Lions. Central’s D held Altoona to 49 rush yards and 114 passing as Troy Fisher was solid as ever, completing 5 of 7 passes for 3 touchdowns, 2 going to Gavin Thomson. Norwin’s Knights are next and at 4-4 and probably won’t offer too much. But they have been playing better their last 4 games, beating C-Mac 34-14, losing to Peters Township 13-7 and Mt. Lebanon 27-14 before defeating Butler last week 7-6.

5 Manheim Township 6-1, D3; Township put a hurtin on Warwick last week crushing the Warriors 45-7 while holding them to 28 yards rushing. Luke Emge threw for 216 yards and 4 scores and Jake Rodenberger showed his leg with a 46-yard field goal. That was a revenge game with Warwick beating Township last year in Lancaster 31-28. And it brings us to “Wilson Week” where they look to end the Bulldogs 68 game Section-One winning streak. This looks to be a tight game with Manheim averaging 28ppg while allowing 19 to Wilson’s 31 to 20 average score against the same 4 opponents. The most interesting common opponents are Central Dauphin and Governor Mifflin. Wilson lost to both 28-20 and 21-14 respectively while Township beat CD 17-14 then lost to the Mustangs 49-14. It’s a homer for Township, their 4th of the year where a packed house will give them a slight edge. Otherwise, toss this one up.

PIAA liable for concussions

i tried to copy article from the Morning call - Courts cleared was for student athletes to hold PIAA liable for concussions. This has major ramifications on multiple levels and multiple sports. Tulla has subtlely been alluding to this. This a now a legal liability that I suspect many districts and couches wish not to have to face. I understand the ramifications, but we have gotten too litigious and very soft.

The West: 6A Top 10….October 18th (#6 -#10)

6 State College 6-1, D6; Allowing the other team 352 yards rushing can never be a good thing even when you win 34-14. That’s what happened last week where they defeated Central Dauphin East in a key conference game. Special teams played a major role with SC returning a kickoff 80 yards for a score plus a 90 yard fumble returned for another score. Still, it was a tight game with the Lions holding a slim 14-7 lead at the half. For SC, PSU running back commit Isaiah Edwards is back from injury although Tristen Lyons led the way with 152 yards on 11 carries. With Harrisburg up next at Severance Field, those 352 rushing yards look ominous. CD East has great team speed but Harrisburg puts a whole other definition on that. Combining that with their passing attack makes this one look like a long day for the Lions. Harrisburg (5A, 7-0) is clearly the best team in the district and would be right there neck and neck with Pine Richland in any listing of western Top-10 teams along with Cathedral Prep making for one heck of a Top 3.

7 North Allegheny 5-2, D7; As mother from Georgia used to say, “we’re cooking with gas now” after North Allegheny won their 5th straight game, trouncing Seneca Valley 49-14. Qb Luke Truman has emerged as a solid high school quarterback with his ability to get it there, passing for 93 yards or toting the ball and rushing for 138 yards last week against Sen Val. No one is calling him the 2nd coming of Eric Maenza (58%-1202p, 1258r) but he does give opposing DC’s something to think about. So do a versatile group of running backs in Turner White, 6-0, 180-sr; speedy Ben Maenza at 5-8, 160, a junior….and powerful Ryan Langdon at 6-0, 230. The receiver corps may be under rated and they can plug in big bodies at tight ends as needed. They haven’t won 5 straight for no reason and the offense should get a lot of the credit averaging 41ppg, supported by a defense allowing 14ppg during the streak. This is not the team that lost to Bethel Park the 2nd week of the season. This week has them home to Hempfield where they should secure win #6 if they can keep their mind on the task at hand and not look ahead to Pine Richland the following week.

8 Wilson 4-2, D3; Wilson got their 68th consecutive Section win (think about that!) drubbing overmatched Lebanon 46-11. The streak takes you back to 2007 where guess who beat them? Right, Manheim Township 26-7. Some kind of streak. Last week saw running back Iggy Reynoso score 4 touchdowns on 19 carries for 164 yards, taking his career total to 71 while Connor Uhrig had a strong performance completing 16 of 20 passed for 183 yards. The win keeps them even with Manheim Township at 4-0, setting up the tie breaker next week in West Lawn for all the LL Section-One marbles. The Streaks lost a heartbreaker last year 17-10 (late score) and will be pumped! But Wilson is all about “big game” experience and have owned them. None of that means a thing here.

9 Mt Lebanon 5-2, D7; The Blue Devils couldn’t hold on to an early lead as a determined Peters Township team came back but fell short with Mt. Lebanon hanging on for a 18-15 road win. This sets up what should be a highly competitive game this week at Penn Hills with both having high scoring offenses and questionable defenses. That spells excitement and the great potential for an upset. It’s a WPIAL crossover game with Lebo in the Southeastern and the Indians in the Northern. But it’s still an important game that could mimic last year’s where Mt. Lebanon outlasted Penn Hills 56-27.

10 Penn Hills 5-2, D7; As always the 10 spot is a tough slot to fill with 6 classifications but a number of teams could fill the bill here. Central Dauphin East (5-2) is a leading candidate, beating Central Dauphin before losing by 20 points to State College last week despite rushing for 352 yards. So is undefeated Delaware Valley (8-0) with a 55-17 win over Williamsport (6-2) and a well under rated Valley View (4A, 5-3) team. Red Lion (7-0) is right there as well with a 31-14 win over York High (5A, 6-1) who has wins against Dallastown (5-2) and Cedar Cliff (4-3). But Penn Hills gets the nod playing out of the tough Northern 7 with a pile of athletes, an exciting high scoring offense and their comeback last week where they scored 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to pull away from feisty Hempfield 42-27. With all their offense we could call this week’s home game with Mt. Lebanon an upset special. Lebo’s CBs better be ready to fly! Should be a fun one.

Others:

Red Lion 7-0, D3; Beat winless New Oxford (5A 0-7) 45-7 and are now home in a critical York-Adams game vs rival Central York (5-2). Red Lion won last year in a good one 28-18. This will be the same.

Delaware Valley 8-0, D2; Del Val crushed fading Scranton (5-3) at Scranton who lost their last 3 games after a great start with a veteran team. The Warriors should go 9-0 with 4-4 Wallenpaupack coming in next.

Central Dauphin East 5-2, D3; The Panthers lost at State College 34-14, now home to Carlisle where both are battling for a playoff spot.

Central Dauphin 4-3, D3; Lost at home to Harrisburg 48-10 but will recover at Chambersburg.

Peters Township 5-3, D7; Tough loss at home to Mt. Lebanon 18-15 but still in the playoff hunt, needing a win at Canon McMillan Friday then Shaler the following week.

Hempfield 5-2, D3; At 5A playoff hopeful Conestoga Valley, then Wilson at home. In 2nd place in the LL- Sec-1, behind Wilson and Manheim.

McDowell 4-4, D10; Lost 20-0 to Austintown Fitch (Div-1, 5-3, OH). 3 of 4 losses are to out of state teams. At General McLane (4-4) who won 4 of their last 5.

Erie High 6-2, D10; Beat Brashear 62-9, at Lakeside (Div-2, 4-4, OH) this weekend.

Prep vs FJ

Listening to the Prep/Judge game on the Prep student radio station, they mentioned several times FJ had only 27 players on side line and they multiple players quit last week and multiple suspensions. If this is true, and I believe Ryan had similar issues earlier in season that led to players being dismissed, coupled with all the Roman discussion on here, sounds like these programs are going in the wrong direction in a big way. I know the some of the freshmen teams look good at Roman and Carroll which is great, but man I didn't realize how bad things are getting until you hear stories like this and see the scores this year.

PCL Red

Things certainly look to be getting worse with respect to competitiveness. Usually either Judge or Roman gives SJP a very competitive game--and it wasn't so long ago that Judge or Roman would occasionally beat SJP--but this year the games were over by the middle of the first quarter. And it's not just the pool of talented players that's getting shallower but the pool of kids willing to come to practice and suit up that's is getting smaller too. Carroll and Roman cancelled their JV games against SJP and I'll be astonished if Judge fields a JV team tomorrow.

Stock Market

I have been reading all this Trump chest thumping about the stock market. True the stock market is doing well thanks to Obama getting it to 19000+ but it would appear only half of Americans are benefiting from the rally. It would appear that only 52% of Americans owns any stock with the top 2% owning most of that 52%. SO I am glad the rich are getting richer good for them and donny but 48 %of the country have not seen gains.
