What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?

PIAA AAA Wrestling State Tourney - Preview and Thread

106

The Favorite
Kurt Phipps, Norwin (So. 36-0)

Phipps, the top seeded regional champ, was seventh here last year as a freshman. This season, he comes in undefeated and ranked #17 nationally by Intermat. Phipps owns wins over most of the contenders here, though his matches with the cadre of talented WPIAL freshman have gotten progressively less close.

Regional Champs
Southwest: Kurt Phipps, Norwin (So. 36-0)
South Central: Ben Monn, Cumberland Valley (So. 36-7)
Northwest: Matt Sarbo, Altoona (Fr. 30-5)
Southeast: Kyle Waterman, Council Rock South (So. 41-5)
Northeast: Matt Mayer, Bethlehem Catholic (Fr. 23-8)

Monn spent most of the season up at 113 or even 120 before cutting down to 106 for the postseason. He’s been a buzzsaw since getting down to weight. Sarbo won a junior high state title last year in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament, beating Mayer in semifinals and Gary Steen of Reynolds in finals, who is the favorite to win the title in 2A this weekend. Waterman dropped matches to Kyle Hauserman of Council Rock North in sectionals and districts before winning last week’s regional. Mayer spent much of the season up at 113, but was thrust into the lineup when state #3 Nate Lackman pulled out of the postseason. Mayer has been undefeated since getting down to 106.

Freshmen
Matt Mayer, Bethlehem Catholic
Matt Vulakh, Pope John Paul II
Vincent Rinella, Meadville
Matt Sarbo, Altoona
Sam McMonagle, WC Henderson
Alejandro Herrera, Seneca Valley
Aidan Lewis, Cedar Cliff
Kyle Hauserman, Council Rock North
Carter Dibert, Franklin Regional

Not uncommon at 106. There is a lot of talent in this weight, with Mayer, Sarbo, Herrera, and Dibert all looking like guys who could win titles in the coming years and lots of future medalists here.

Best Thursday Matches
Ben Monn, Cumberland Valley vs. Brady Sherback, Greater Latrobe
Matt Sarbo vs. Tal-Reese Flemming, Liberty
Alejandro Herrera, Seneca Valley vs. Adam Jacob, East Pennsboro
Kyle Hauserman, Council Rock North vs. Carter Dibert, Franklin Regional
Hauserman/Dibert winner vs. Kyle Waterman, Council Rock South

In a wide open weight class, there is a lot of intriguie in this afternoon’s matches. Monn is a popular pick to win, but has to get through a tough senior in Brady Sherback, who snagged the 4th spot in the brutal Southwest Region. Herrera and Dibert are two of the most talented freshman in the state, and both have experienced foes in their openers. If Dibert can get past Hauserman, he has a date with Waterman in the round of 16. That’s a full tour of the Council Rock school district for the freshman. If Hauserman wins, he gets his third chance to knock off his rival from South.

Predicted Semis
Kurt Phipps, Norwin (D7) vs. Ben Monn, Cumberland Valley (D3)
Matt Sarbo, Altoona (D6) vs. Carter Dibert, Franklin Regional (D7)

Phipps has a tough match with Peyton Brown of Emmaus in his first round, then likely Andrew Brest in quarters, but he’s a solid favorite in both. Not making semis would be a surprise. Monn will have two wars with Sherback and Mayer, but size matters, and I think he’ll be too physical for each when its all said and done. In the bottom half, it’s really anybody’s guess. Sarbo will have Tal-Reese Flemming and Alejandro Herrera in his first two matches, any of those three could make finals, frankly. I’m picking Dibert to get past the two Council Rock matches then have a relatively easier quarter, likely with Cedar Cliff’s Aidan Lewis.

Predicted Final
Kurt Phipps, Norwin (D7) vs. Carter Dibert, Franklin Regional (D7)

I like Dibert to beat Sarbo in the match up of freshman, largely based on schedule. Phipps and Monn could be a final, but Monn will have to settle to wrestling back for 3rd. In finals, Dibert has three losses to Phipps this year (2-1, 7-0, 7-2) and I don’t see the freshman quite closing the gap.

Predicted Champion: Kurt Phipps, Norwin (1st title)

Lancaster Times; Mike Gross - on transfer rule

The PIAA transfer problem is trickier than it seems (column)
Without Diamond Johnson, Neumann-Goretti’s girls’ basketball team probably would have won a state championship.

The Saints, from Philadelphia, have won four in a row. In their 63-46 win over Bishop Canevin Monday for the PIAA Class 3A title, Johnson didn’t even start.

But when Johnson transferred to N-G from Phoebus High School in Virginia in February, she walked into the eye of a storm.

There is an increasingly loud and angry cohort, among people who follow high school sports in Pennsylvania, who feel that the game is rigged.

For those people, Johnson is the latest Exhibit A:

A mid-season transfer. From a school four states and nearly 300 miles away, to what amounts to an elite magnet school for basketball. By a kid averaging 33 points a game at her old school.

District 12, which represents the School District of Philadelphia, handled Johnson’s transfer. She actually enrolled at N-G in February, but wasn’t allowed to play until after the District 12 committee approved the transfer March 5.

“I have to give District 12 credit for that,’’ PIAA Executive Director Robert Lombardi said Tuesday.

“They did everything properly and people might not like the decision, but they treated the student fairly.”

Not everyone is giving District 12 credit.

“It seems every year now, the state tournament comes and the eastern part of the state dominates,” Bishop Canevin coach Scott Dibble told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette last week. “The reason they do is because kids go to school wherever they want.

“I should’ve gone down to Florida two weeks ago and brought two players up here to play and said they’re here for academics and family reasons. But (District Seven, or the Western Pa. Interscholastic Athletic Association) would never let that happen because they have ethics and stick by them.”

We should point out here an interesting truth: Philadelphia has, arguably, 4-5 elite magnet schools for boys’ basketball and another 2-3 for girls basketball. Pittsburgh, arguably, doesn’t have any.

Western Pa. certainly has one in Kennedy Catholic, in the Northwest corner of the state (District 10, not the WPIAL). And the Pittsburgh area certainly does have such powerhouses in other sports, like football.

Another truth: Contrary to popular belief, the folks who run the PIAA look at the entire morass of competitive equity issues - transfers, recruiting, the public/private divide - with as much dismay as anyone else.

They hate it, too. They just don’t publicly say so. They realize the complexity involved and the hurdles to reform.

But they keep trying.

On Monday, the PIAA Board of Directors passed an amendment to the transfer rule. It makes students ineligible to play a sport if they transfer from a school at which they’ve already played half a season in that sport.

And if they haven’t played half a season, in-season transfers must wait 21 days to play.

Further, the Competition Committee last week recommended a first reading of an even stronger limitation: Making senior-year transfers ineligible for the postseason.

That is, if you play basketball at School A as a junior, and transfer to School B during or before your senior year, you can’t play postseason basketball for your new school.

That change gets a first-reading look in May. It can’t actually happen until three readings and then a vote are complete.

Still, Lombardi said, “That’s pretty strong. There was a feeling that a lot of late-career transfers are a hidden attempt at competitive advantage.’’

Under the amendment approved Monday, Diamond Johnson would not have have been able to play hoops at N-G this season.

Except that the rule can be waived by district committees for exceptional or unusual circumstances. District 12 officials cited a “private family situation,’’ as the reason for Johnson’s transfer.

Would they have regarded the private family situation as an exceptional or unusual circumstance?

The Competition Committee, formed a little over a year ago, keeps whittling away.

“A lot of things have been percolating,’’ said Lombardi. “You have a lot of good research and good ideas, and people who aren’t afraid to speak their minds.’’

There are hurdles, and at least one brick wall.

When private schools joined PIAA in 1972, they did so via state law, an addition to the state’s public-school code:

“Private schools shall be permitted, if otherwise qualified, to be members of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.’’

“Members,’’ cannot be treated differently, in any way, than other members. Thus no separate public/private championships. No factoring public/private into classifications by enrollment multipliers, etc., etc.

The PIAA can’t mess with that, or there will be litigation. They can’t change it. Only the state legislature can.

“We’re not going to break the law,’’ Lombardi said. “That isn’t going anywhere.’’

“I myself will be lifting and going to a few camps to work on things I need to work on. Team wise, it is mainly lifting and learning the offensive and defensive packages.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“Honestly considering what we lost and what we kept, I’m expecting a much better season then last years. Returning eight defensive starters and countless skill players is always something to be excited about. All I’m going to say is this coming year’s team will bring a new mindset to prove others wrong and will undoubtedly play to win every game. Last year’s team doesn’t reflect this coming team.”
