Sammy has a narrow 8-7 lead over Reluctant...

In a very heated competition of who can strike out more, Sammy (a.k.a. 50 pts. per game) has an 8-7 lead over legendary, infamous, long-time poster reluctant to comment. Referring to the amount of posts that had zero replies! This is since January 31, so it's an amazingly high number of posts that went unanswered in just 1.5 months, leading to much frustration and head banging by the dangerous duo, as they think that their posts can take down The Trumpster as they play to a large audience of 5-10 people on this site. {Could Sammy call my grammar into question for what is obviously a run-on sentence? I hope not.}

Sammy, in particular, has been working fulltime and then some, in order to post and reply like a man possessed, not realizing the entertainment that he is providing to most of the 5-10 people who follow his lunacy. Congratulations boys, job well done!

Q&A with Springfield quarterback Jack Psenicska

How did the football season go for your team?
“This season for our team went very well. It just didn't end the way we wanted. We went 13-1 and won the Central League title.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“Workouts have started for next year since January. We will keep working until the season.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“This off-season, I'm really trying to approve my in-game awareness and really just know the playbook inside and out.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I think this team can be just as good as last year, but we just have to work for it because nothing is given.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“The toughest game right now has to be the first game with Glen Mills. We just have to worry about them.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I would love to play football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“A few schools have reached out to me like Gettysburg and West Chester.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not made a college trip yet, but I am going to Gettysburg soon.

What camps are you going to this summer?
“I am going to a few camps in West Chester and Gettysburg.”

What was your favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college was always Penn State and still is.”

Q&A with Freedom linebacker Cody Ross

How did the football season go for your team?
“The 2017 season started out like we thought it would. We were 5-2, but ended up going through a coaching change mid-season and finished 5-5. In the ninth game, we lost our quarterback and one of our running backs. Then I got hurt in the 10th game, so it was a disappointing end to the season. We lost in the first round of the playoffs where all three of us, our starting backfield, didn’t even dress. It wasn’t the way we thought the end would go, but it was a great learning experience.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“It has been a very intense off-season with the new head coach, Russ Barley. He was our DC the previous two years and was the interim head coach the last half of last season. He has got the team going through the best off-season program I’ve ever been around. He’s a great guy who is the right coach to get us to where we need be. He has brought a breath of fresh air to the program. He’s old school, but he’s brought a hard nose, blue collar atmosphere to the team. I feel great. This is the best I’ve felt going into a season, not only strength wise, but speed wise. Besides training at school, I’ve been working privately on my speed and football skills with a couple private trainers.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“As a team, we seniors are really trying to build a true team atmosphere. Since I got to Freedom in my sophomore year, a lot of people have targeted our class of 2019, as a group that everyone thought if we could stick together and put the work in could be a very special talented group. It’s an exciting time to see what we have coming back skill wise. Personally, I just want to make sure I’m on top of my game. I was a little disappointed in the way my game was last year compared to my freshman and sophomore years. I’ve spent the off-season not only working on my strength and speed, but doing a lot of film work, watching what I did last year, and what I need to correct.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“As I said earlier, I think with the skill set we have coming back, it can be a special season. We got a group of us that have been starters since our sophomore years, and a few others that started last year as sophomores. The talent level is there, but we need to replace a couple linemen. We have guys that have been putting in the work to take over because the younger guys are starting to step up. Defensively, we are adding some things, so I’m hoping we can live up to the goals we have set as a team. The coaching staff is great. Coach Barley kept a few coaches from last year but added some new great coaches with a lot of experience. It’s all there for us. We as players just have to do our jobs.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“All the games are tough. No disrespect to any other 2A conference, but top to bottom, I feel we got the toughest conference. The MAC has that history that every week is a street fight. There were a few teams added this past year, plus we play a 3A team to start the season. To be the best, you got to beat the best. We got to take it one game at a time and the key part is to stay healthy. If we can stay healthy, I think it will be an exciting year for Freedom Football.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Definitely football. Growing up in a football family, my grandfather was a coach for 42-years and is in the Beaver County hall of fame. My father is a coach, so football is a family thing. It’s all I’ve known growing up around the game.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve had a lot of PSAC, FCS, Patriot League, and Ivy League schools that I’m talking to and visiting. Lately, a lot of the MAC schools have started to talk as well.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Quite a few of the schools that I’ve mentioned stay in either daily contact, or frequent contact with me. I’ve been blessed to meet a lot of great coaches and seen a lot of great places. I’m not letting the recruiting process get crazy, just keeping it loose and fun.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I’ve been all over Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia since my sophomore year. I feel I’ve been blessed that the process started early for me and I’ve been able to get out and visit quite a bit.”

What camps are you going to this summer?
“My sophomore and junior year was crazy with camps. I don’t have plans to do a lot this year. I may do three or four, but that’s it. I’m trying to narrow down and focus on where I see myself playing in college.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“When I was younger, I was always around the Pitt program. As a I said earlier, my grandfather was a coach. He coached many players that went to play in the pros, most notedly Tony Dorsett. He always had great friendships with the coaches at Pitt and coached a lot at their prospect camps, plus my father has a lot of friends that have coached there so Pitt was always around my house. As I got older, I always liked the University of Miami and the way they played in those early years under Coach Johnson and the guys that followed him. When I was younger, I got to meet Coach Clarke when he coached at Pitt. He is now at Robert Morris and it was awesome to talk to him about what it was like to play at Miami. I’m sure he won’t remember, but it was awesome to just speak with him. I also like the Big Ten for the type of ball they play.”

Q&A with Malvern Prep offensive tackle Jake Hornibrook

How did the football season go for your team?
“We had a tough start to the year and went 1-4 out of conference. Once we started league play, we turned it around and went 5-0 to win the Inter-AC.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“We have team lifts four days a week and speed workouts once a week. During the evaluation period, we have morning workouts on the field.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“I will try to improve on all aspects of my game. Most importantly, it is getting bigger and stronger.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I think we have a special group of guys. We have a very strong senior class and young guys that will step up. This year should be great.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“They're all going to be tough games. We can't take any team lightly. We're just going to take it week by week.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I'm being recruited by a lot of power five schools.”

What colleges have offered you so far?
“I have been offered by Virginia, Duke, UNC, Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College, Louisville, Maryland, Rutgers, Vanderbilt, Baylor, West Virginia, UCONN, Temple, Old Dominion, Buffalo, and Army.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“All the schools are recruiting me hard, but Duke is contacting me the most.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I've gone to Michigan State, Virginia, Duke, and UNC this year so far.”

Do you have any visits planned?
“I'm also planning on going to Northwestern in early April.”

Do you have a favorite school at this point?
“I haven't narrowed anything down yet.”

What camps are you going to this summer?
“I'm planning on going to the Opening Regional Camp and Under Armor All American Camp.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“As a kid, I never really had a favorite college.”

Q&A with Aliquippa athlete Will Gipson

How did the football season go for your team?
“We went undefeated until we played the WPIAL 3A championship where we lost to a pretty competitive team. We broke records and went down as statistically the best defense in the WPIAL and the best defense in Aliquippa history. We had a lot of weapons and we utilized each other well. That’s what got us to the championship.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“I’m only weighing at 182-pounds, but I have a weight gain and workout plan. I also play four different positions, so I’ll be doing a lot of positional training by myself and with a position coach. A lot of skill set drills such a footwork and speed training.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“Just perfecting my craft. Like I said, four positions is hard, so during the off-season, I’ll just have to work on my skills to improve my play. I have to figure out which position I want to play at the next level.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I don’t want to jinx anything, but we’re getting pretty much all of our skill players back and two great linemen. Anything less than a state championship is a failed season, but I think we will make it there and win it.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Cincinnati, Toledo, Miami (OH), Howard, Western Michigan, West Virginia, Louisville, Michigan State, Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt, Kent State and Penn State.”

What colleges have offered you so far?
“Miami (OH), Toledo, and Howard.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I would say Rutgers is, due to the fact that the coaches and staff text me every day.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes, I visited Miami (OH), Toledo twice, Rutgers, West Virginia, Penn State three times, Cincinnati, and the University of Florida.”

Do you have any visits planned?
“I am going to Michigan State next Saturday, Kent State, and Syracuse sometime this month or next.”

Do you have a favorite school at this point?
“I really don’t have a favorite, but the Miami (OH) has the best coaching staff.”

What camps are you going to this summer?
“I don’t think I’ll be attending any summer camps other than Rivals.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Michigan State was my favorite college and for them to be recruiting me is surreal.”

Q&A with Schuylkill Haven defensive end Nathan Reedy

How did the football season go for your team?
“The season went pretty well for us. We won back to back district championships, which is the first time in school history so that was pretty big for us. We were also underestimated last year, so we proved a lot of people wrong.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“During the wrestling season, I was lifting three times a week at the jungle. Now that wrestling is coming to an end, I plan on working out five times a week.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“I look to improve basically everything this off-season. I am never satisfied with where I am at and I hope to push myself to be the best.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“It’s too early to tell how we will be next year right now. We’re just focusing on improving ourselves and developing our younger players to be able to fill in the gaps on the roster. We still have a ton of returning starters, so I have confidence that next year will be a good year for us. We’re hungry for a three-peat.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“Our toughest game next year is most likely going to be North Schuylkill. They have a ton of tough kids returning. It’s going to be a good game.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I plan on playing football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Currently, the only schools that have contacted me about sports have been Lehigh, Mount Union, and Lycoming. Yale’s coach asked for my transcript, but that’s all.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I would say that Lycoming is recruiting me the hardest. Lehigh and Mount Union just emailed me back about my highlights, but Lycoming seems to be showing the most interest.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No, I have not made any trips. I plan on visiting colleges either this summer or next year during and after football.”

What camps are you going to this summer?
“I don’t really believe in camps too much because I let my play talk for myself. But if I do go to a camp, I will go to Penn State’s camp. It is my dream to play at Penn State.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I was actually a big gamer when I was younger. When I got a college football game, I liked Oklahoma’s jerseys so they kind of stuck with me as my favorite team. I like Penn State and Oklahoma.”

Speculative buy on Bluebird Bio (BLUE)...

This company is using gene therapy treatment, rather than the traditional chemotherapy and radiation to treat cancer. Currently, they are working with Celgene in a Phase 1 clinical study, so it's very early, but they are clearly onto something. The stock is not cheap at $106, and is for speculative accounts only, at this time, but it could be a big winner and takeover candidate.

Oh No!

As I sit here in North Carolina in a state of depression over the realization that I just had my ideal president for eight years and have nothing to show for it, other than a really crappy healthcare plan, now I am faced with having to hear about an expanding economy highlighted by a great jobs report this morning.

Obama was so much smarter than Trump; I can't figure out how Trump is getting so much more done. My cable TV tells me to "thing" that this is not the case, but, deep down, I know it's true, although I would never admit it. Nor could I even articulate it if I tried to!

Now, if Trump gets something positive done with North Korea, I might have to jump off of a high building. Where does this end? This is a guy who never would have even been elected if it hadn't been for the Russians, although I can't articulate how they could have fixed the election.

Someone, please help!

Wrestling - AAA Preview - UPDATED STATE RANKINGS

With most District tournaments starting this weekend, wretling postseason is upon us. I've compiled some previews for each weight in AAA before we get started. There will likely be some weight changes in D7 and D11, and I'll make changes if there are big drops (I'd expect some movement either down from 160 to 152 or up from 145 to 152, plus some other miscellaneous ones). All state rankings I've used are from PaPower Wrestling. The national rankings are from FloWrestling and Intermat, with Flo listed first.

106
State Rankings
1. Kurt Phipps, Norwin (So. 30-0) S7
2. Brady Sherback, Greater Latrobe (Sr. 22-4)
3. Adam Jacob, East Pennsboro (So. 26-7)
4. Ben Monn, Cumberland Valley (So. 28-6)
5. Andrew Brest, General McLane (Jr. 24-3)
6. Carter Dibert, Franklin Regional (Fr. 24-6) JH1, JH2
7. Alejandro Herrera, Seneca Valley (Fr. 36-7)
8. Matt Mayer, Bethlehem Catholic (Fr. 15-8)
9. Peyton Brown, Emmaus (Jr. 24-2)
10. Tal-Reese Flemming, Liberty (Jr. 23-2)
Returning State Medalists: Phipps
Returning State Qualifiers: Phipps, Trenton Donahue, DuBois (So.)
Toughest Region: WPIAL (Southwest ): Phipps, Sherback, Dibert and Herrera

The opening weight class is one that is normally dominated by superstar freshmen or undersized seniors who have grinded for their careers. This year, we really don’t have either. Kurt Phipps is the latest in the family line of Phipps brothers to be a state title favorite and he probably fits the bill the closest as the big time underclassman. He slightly underperformed as a freshman, but has really looked the part this season. Beyond that, the weight is wide open. Bethlehem Catholic produced the big news in terms of entries when freshman Matt Mayer, who spent most of the season at 113 while Dillon Murphy was injured, beat state #4 Nathan Lackman in a wrestle off and will be the Golden Hawks postseason representative. Mayer was third in the state junior high tournament last year at 102 pounds. Mayer joins a class with Emmaus's Peyton Brown (brother of 2x state finalist Taylor Brown) and Liberty's Tal-Reese Flemming who are all medal threats. Ben Monn of Cumberland Valley and Adam Jacob of East Pennsboro have made the cut to 106 after wrestling 113 for most of the year. Jacob beat Monn in the Sectional Finals last weekend and shoots up Jeff Upson's rankings here. Out west, Sherback is the lone senior at 106 expected to contend. Carter Dibert is the next in line at Franklin Regional after winning a state junior high championship last season at 87 pounds. He may be slightly undersized for this year, but he’s the best freshman shot at a medal at a weight class typically dominated by young bucks. Fellow freshman Alejandro Herrera-Rondon of Seneca Valley was third last year at 92 pounds in junior high and has challenged both Phipps and Dibert this year. Also lurking is Altoona's Matt Sarbo, who won the 102 pound weight class in junior high last year over AA state title contender Gary Steen (and beat Mayer in a tight one in semis).

My Pick: Phipps

Q&A with Selinsgrove Area running back Joe Kahn

How did the football season go for your team?
“The football season went extremely well for my team as we went 11-3 and won district gold. We got into the second round of playoffs losing to Bethlehem Catholic by one.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“My team and I have been living in the weight room since the Monday after the Bethlehem Catholic game. As the freshman class comes in, we are treating them like our little brothers and showing them the ropes. Selinsgrove football prides itself off of being a strong, unbreakable family.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“I'm trying to improve on my strength and speed with the help of my OC and strength coach, Derek Pope. He has helped me mentally and physically get in better shape, but you can never get comfy or content with where you're at. You always have to be pushing yourself.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I believe my team will be very good next season. We have a bunch of young kids, but they are tough as nails and won't back down from a fight. Our line is getting new additions and these guys are hungry.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

“Yeah, I am still a proud Miami Hurricane fan. They were always viewed as the bad boys of football because they have swagger. I like to take some of that and bring it up to Selinsgrove.”

Q&A with Our Lady of Sacred Heart quarterback Tyler Bradley

How did the football season go for your team?
“I thought this past season was a turning point for OLSH football as a whole. We lost to a tough Imani team in a close game in the playoffs and it was a heartbreaker. With only starting the program a few years back and seeing how we turned the program around is awesome. We won our first section championship and we’re looking to build off of that this upcoming season as we prepare to make a run for the WPIAL title.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“My off-season workout plans this year consist of playing for the Team 412 Elite 7-vs.-7 Team. On top of that, I’m lifting with our team three days a week and have a trainer to work on speed and agility.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“If I️ had to choose a specific area I’m looking to improve on this off-season, it’s my speed and agility. I’m working on improving on all aspects of my game. Everything has to be five times better entering next season.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I believe we’re going to be serious contenders for the WPIAL and State titles next year. We’re returning all four of our receivers and our number one back will be back next year as he got injured in our first scrimmage. We have some big young guys that we can fill the holes in the O-Line because we lost four of our five starters from last year. I have total confidence in our coaches that they will get the best version of us that they can get. With that being said, we’re going to have to put in the work to get there. We’re not settling for a section title this year. We want more than that.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“I prepare for every game like it’s the biggest game of the year, but everyone has their eyes on multiple games. We start the year week one with our rival, Sto-Rox. They are always a tough team. Then in week two, we host Northgate. They are a team we haven’t beat in my two years at OLSH, so it is another big game. The Rochester game will prove to be another big game as it decided the section title last year. We also drew the defending state champions, Jeanette, as an out of conference game. That should be a fun one. We also added two more teams to the schedule this year in Bishop Canevin and Laurel. To answer your question, we have a lot of tough teams on the schedule this upcoming year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I’m planning on playing football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“A couple of DIII schools, but I was also invited to UMass’s junior day and one at West Virginia State.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No, but I’m making some this upcoming spring and summer.”

What camps are you going to this summer?
“I plan on attending Temple’s camp as well as RMU and Duquesne for sure. We’ll see where else I get invited to or what might come up.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Pitt has always been my favorite college growing up. I’ve been watching and attending games since I was 4-years-old back when my uncle played there.”

Q&A with Bishop McDevitt fullback Dray Donley

How did the football season go for your team?
“Overall, we had a good season. We went 6-0 in our league and we were the Mid-Penn Champs. We had some injuries but finished 10-3 at the end of the season. We were glad to make it back to the district championship, but we came up short.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“After we lost the district championship, we took a week off and got right back to work. We lift as a team three days a week and do speed and agility training at Spooky Nook two days a week. I just finished wrestling and decided to give up playing baseball to get ready for the season. I plan to workout with the team and train three days a week with Ryan Mackes at the Performance Fitness Lab.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“This off-season, I'm really working on my lateral quickness and acceleration. I had a good junior year with over 100 tackles, but I'm always looking to get bigger, stronger, and faster.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“Our team is going to be a lot more experienced this year. We lost some key players, but we also have a lot of key players returning. Our experienced line, quarterback, and receivers will really make us a run and pass threat. On defense, we have some spots to fill and kids that are ready to step up. We should have a very good season this year.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“The toughest game on our schedule this year will probably be Cumberland Valley. They beat us the last two times we met and they’re always good. They are our first game this year and we plan on starting 1-0.”
