Thank you Janet Yellen, thank you little barry...

Yellen and crew decide to keep rates unchanged and the market climbs. It is interesting that in the absence of any pro-growth policies by the incapable one, rates need to stay at emergency levels for nearly 7 years! The result: stocks skyrocket, led by the TQQQ (ProShares Ultra NASDAQ); thanks again Janet and barry; and the liberals get even more pissed off! Beautiful. The fact that stocks went up for only about an hour and then down after 3 PM shows how little confidence there is in the economy. The uptrend might resume, but only because there are no other good alternatives for investors.

Top 20: The East-AAAA (1-10)

Top 20: The East-AAAA
2015 Week 2 rankings

1. Parkland 2-0. Parkland beat Northampton 35-0 last week, snapping the K-Kids three game winning streak while at the same time winning their EPC-South opener with a bone crushing defense. Defensive coordinator Tim Moncman’s unit is showing signs of great potential after holding Northampton to 104 total yards of total offense and 31 yards rushing. Quarterback Devante Cross was strong, completing 19 of 26 passes for 222 yards and 4 Tds while rushing for 76 yards. Receiver Kenny Yeboah had 10 receptions for 120 yards. Undefeated Allentown Central Catholic (2-0, AAA) is next, fresh off an impressive 35-23 win against Whitehall. The Zephyrs graduated the world but are not without talent, namely quarterback Gianni Sinatore. The problem here is the Vikings are just good enough to get Parkland’s attention and that can’t be good! And they have Parkland’s former head coach Rob Melosky (Parkland, Nazareth) as OC, running a creative offense. They won the state title in 2002 with Melosky at the helm, edging Bethlehem Catholic (10-1) 14-11 in the first round, Central Dauphin (12-1, #1-PA, 13-USA Today) in the quarterfinal 28-21 (got lucky….Ha!), then Woodland Hills (13-1) in the final 34-12. Austin Scott led that great team with 3853 yards rushing and 53 touchdowns! If Melosky can work some magic via the air lanes we got a game.
2. St. Joseph’s Prep 1-1. Didn’t drop the Hawks at all after losing to out of state Don Bosco Prep 55-21. Up next is St. Ignatius (2-1, Clev-OH, #15 per JJ Huddle, Div-1) coming off a 63-56 loss to another Ohio power Mentor (2-1). The Wildcats are coached by one of the real legends in Coach Chuck Kyle, in his 33rd season with a 316-78-1 record. This is a team that scores points in bunches with a veteran offense (9 returning starters), led by senior quarterback QB Dennis Grosel (6-2, 205). He threw for 2,039 yards and 17 Tds last year. Also back is a veteran corps of senior receivers in Jack Cook (5-11, 175, 47/875) and Calvin Grbac (6-2, 175, 29/648) and running backs James Norris (5-8, 155, sr, Div-1 track) and Jimmy Andrews (5-11, 205, jr). The line returns LT Liam Eichenberg (6-6, 290, sr, Notre Dame), one of the top lineman in the country and OG Rich McGraw (6-2, 250, sr), C Jone Spellacy (6-1, 275, jr) and Michael Bodnor (6-3, 260, sr). While the defense is thinned by the loss of their top ten tacklers, they return DE Tito Vazquez (6-2, 250, sr), LB Ben Cray (6-0, 215, sr) and LB Alex Maruna (6-1, 205, sr) with Jack Cook and Quinn Lawless (5-11, 190, sr) on the corners. 6-2, 220 junior James Leyden may start at TE and LB. Last year’s game was awkward with St. Ignatius committing seven turnovers while the Hawk’s reciprocated with twelve penalties. QB Grosel tore them up, passing for 286 yards with a late Hawk score at the 2:32 mark making it look a little closer for the 42-34 final. The Wildcats are imminently beatable, losing to Mentor while allowing 63 points. With their huge offense and developing defense, the Hawks will likely have to outgun them in a shootout….if that’s possible.
3. Coatesville 2-0. The Red Raider offense stayed in high gear throttling outmanned Woodson (DC) 41-14 with a huge offense generating 434 total yards. 296 were rushing. The D was good enough allowing 254 total yards. Duel threat quarterback Jordan Young had four touchdowns, two rushing and two passing, throwing for 138 yards. Winless Roman Catholic is next meaning the Red Raiders may be stepping into a hornet’s nest of angry hombres looking to prevent a 0-3 start. Losses to West Catholic and Downingtown East were far tougher opponents than anything Coatesville faced to date so they’ll be as prepared as a schedule can get you this early in the season.
4. Easton 2-0. Hey, maybe starting Easton off in the PreseasonTop 20 at # 5 was too low as they are playing like a team possessed, blowing out a veteran Emmaus team 49-7 while making it look easy. No one expected that! They’re getting it done with special teams play (punts returned for scores), senior running back Nysir Minney-Gratz’s explosiveness for two +80 yard touchdown runs and real team speed. The D wasn’t bad either, holding the Hornets to184 total yards. Heads up Parkland! Northampton is next and if they thought Parkland was painful, wait until they encounter the Rovers.
5. LaSalle 2-0. Nice scheduling by LaSalle taking on and defeating local powers North Penn and Pennsbury to open the new season. It’s early and all but you’ve got to feel good about beating the Knights in the opener 24-12 and Pennsbury 14-0 last week where LaSalle’s running back Syaire Madden rushed for 132 yards. Pennsbury’s defense was impressive but not as much as LaSalle’s who threw the shutout. This week finds the Explorers at USA-Today’s 3rd ranked DeMatha (2-0), fresh off a 23-22 win against American Heritage (1-1, Plantation, FL), formerly 16th rated and the defending 5A Florida state champ. They beat Central (Mia-FL, formerly #2 USA-Today) the week before, 38-14, the defending 6A Florida state champ making this a huge challenge for LaSalle. DeMatha is the two-time defending Washington Catholic League champ, loaded for bear again this year with six committed FBS players and three uncommitted **** star players. They are a big physical presence up front that likes to beat you up and run you over.
6. Upper Dublin 2-0. The Cardinals made it look easy again beating Truman 38-7 because it was, holding the Tigers to 42 total yards of offense while cranking out 368 of their own. Before you say, that’s Truman and while the Cardinals are a veteran team, Truman also returns much of last year’s team so it’s more than that. Maybe the Cards are just that much better because last year saw Truman lose a tough one, 28-21 with a 7-5 team. Abington, who is off to their worst start in years and one of the few teams to beat Upper Dublin last year is next, limping in with an 0-2 record.
7. Downingtown East 2-0. The Cougars got a good win last weekend going to Philadelphia to beat Roman Catholic 35-21. They came into the season knowing they had weapons in running back Jack Kincade who rushed for 104 yards on 25 carries and All-Everything receiver Cary Angeline who caught 6 for 106 yards making first year starting senior quarterback Saunders Healy icing on the cake! This week’s opponent is North Penn who at 1-1 doesn’t need another loss on the ledger. Historically, they’ve had issues with passing attacks (LaSalle) and this should be no different. What it will provide is a little more clarity about the power structure in the district. It’s early where anything can happen but this looks like a bad spot for the Knights.
8. Downingtown West 2-0. The Whippets moved up two rungs with an impressive road win at Neshaminy, beating the Redskins 20-14. They got it started early with a Michael Riddick’s 81-yard touchdown run in their first possession followed by another first quarter score when Jake Barr ran it in from a yard out. First year starting quarterback Thomas Mattioni is getting it done and then some, passing for 114 yards while rushing for 92. Receiver Jake Barr had 75 yards on five receptions plus a score while rushing for another 38 yards and a touchdown. A 13-0 lead that could have been more, held up with the Skins unable to take advantage of two red zone turnovers. They take their show on the road again Friday heading to Lewistown to play Mifflin County (0-2). The Huskies young team will likely be mercy-ruled knowing West beat a veteran bunch last year in Downingtown 42-7.
9. Neshaminy 1-1. Hard dropping Skins too far with a 20-14 loss to Downingtown West formerly ranked 10th, but it was at home in a scenario that mimicked (previewed?) a playoff game. You couldn’t ask for more getting the Whippets on your turf….early, breaking in a new quarterback. They’re on the road this week in a crossover game against SOL-Continental contender Council Rock South (1-1), a team they defeated last year 49-15. That was one of Neshaminy’s best efforts and conversely, one of the Golden Hawk’s worst. Considering the game South gave Pennsbury, this one could get interesting and should be one of the better games of the weekend.
10. Pennsbury 1-1. After edging Council Rock South the Falcons were shutout on the road by LaSalle, 14-0. Not sure you can say we saw this one coming, but the Falcons did suffer tremendous grad losses, particularly on the offensive side that would lend itself to a struggle with a good defensive team like the Explorers, especially with Pennsbury’s propensity to run the football. Not that they didn’t attempt to pass, they did. In fact, two receivers got behind defenders only to have the ball overthrown. Whatever is left after the “all out” against LaSalle will be needed this week against Council Rock North (1-1) who can crank it up averaging 36ppg. The fun part is their defense that allows 42ppg. Even Pennsbury can score in droves against this group the question is can they outscore them?

Top 20: The East-AAAA (11-20)

11. North Penn 1-1. The Knights moved up a notch with a 40-24 win against always tough West Catholic. Wouldn’t we enjoy seeing more teams take on the PCL and other tough non-conference foes the way the Knights have since 2004. In varying years they’ve played St. Joe’s (07 thru 13), Wood (12, 13), LaSalle (10-15), West Catholic (14-15), Bethlehem Catholic in 2004, Liberty in 2008 and 2009 and more. Relative to the discussion on the board recently, aren’t these better games than scheduling Bergen and Paramus Catholic, Don Bosco et al? Guess not if you’re building a “National” program but otherwise they’re great. Cudos to the Knights for playing a lights out schedule. It continues Friday night playing undefeated Downingtown East at Kottmeyer Stadium. Wow!
12. Quakertown 2-0. The Panthers fell a rung in the rankings not so much for their performance winning against Hatboro Horsham, as for North Penn’s performance who managed a higher quality win against a tougher opponent. Hatboro may be able to score some points, 48 to date but their defense is porous, allowing 93 through two games. That was just the recipe for Quakertown’s veteran and diverse offense that rolled up big numbers on the way to a 38-19 win. They’re at Cheltenham (1-1) next, a team they beat last year 20-7. With a back-loaded schedule playing CR South, CR North and CB East from 10/23 through 11/6, they need to build all the momentum they can to get through the fireworks those games will likely provide.
13. Perkiomen Valley 2-0. Perkiomen Valley shredded Methacton’s defense, scoring at will in a 60-0 rout to open conference action in defense of their PAC-10 title. They entered the year needing to rebuild their lines while well stocked with skill players. Evidently the lines have been rebuilt on both sides, beating CR North in the opener 56-36 then defeating Methacton last week while holding them to 96 total yards of offense. Junior quarterback Stephen Sturm completed 10 of 15 passes for 116 yards and 4 Tds. Their first real challenge is this week in a key conference game at Pottsgrove (1-1) where they’ll tangle with the Falcons in their home opener; always a dangerous proposition. Perk Val won big last year 49-21 and returns most of the skill that did that damage.
14. Freedom 2-0. Freedom earned a hard fought win against Nazareth pulling out a tough road win. The Eagles limited Freedom’s passing attack (QB Joe Young fine) but running back Robert Diaz gouged them for 170 yards as the Pats held them off, winning 31-27. Nothing like an early season road win to bolster the confidence. Emmaus (1-1) is next, limping in off a 49-7 disaster at home to Easton.
15. Liberty 2-0. Liberty breezed to an easy win against William Allen, rolling out a substantial attack with quarterback Doug Erney still doing his thing, throwing for 96 yards on a 6 for 8 outing. The ground assault got 207 yards while holding Allen to128. They’re at Nazareth who showed they are competitive with some good skill people making this a serious challenge as it was for Freedom last week. With a good corps of receivers and a defense answering some preseason concerns, Liberty is rounding into a legitimate threat, capable of hanging with quality teams of the EPC-South. Parkland and Easton?
16. Ridley 2-0. Central League play (?) got off to a real strong start for the Green Raiders winning on the road against defending Central League champ Springfield 25-20 in a game that doesn’t count in the standings. Ok!? The Springfield attack was not the most sophisticated the Raiders will face this year but a road win is a road win, especially against neighboring Springfield. Up next is another tough opponent in Garnet Valley (1-1) who should be pumped following their initial win of the season at home against Bonner 40-22. Same for the Raiders trying to avenge last year’s 21-7 loss. G-Val is G-Val, big lines with big backs. Ridley counters with size as well plus good speed although much of the defense is being rebuilt. The offense returns big numbers while developing a quarterback, Cade Stratton or Jon Buckmaster. This should be a terrific game with Ridley’s home field edge, speed and special teams play eking out a win.
17. Spring Ford 2-0. The Rams had no trouble with Phoenixville last week winning 58-7. And they’ll have no trouble this week at home against Upper Perkiomen (2-0). And they’re off to a great start, winning the opener against State College. State’s quarterback is a work in progress but the win indicated they can go with big, physical teams. Like Perk Val, Spring Ford is overhauling their lines while replacing quarterback Brandon Leacraft and their lead receivers. All their running backs return and they’ve obviously rebuilt their lines which is good news for last year’s back-up quarterback Stone Scarcelle (6-2, 180).
18 Council Rock South 1-1. After opening the season with a narrow loss to Pennsbury, the Hawks followed with a attention getting 43-13 win against Bensalem. Remember last year’s team was young, with only ten seniors on the roster. But two thirds of their backfield returns with quarterback Sean Stackhouse back for his senior season supported by a talented halfback in senior Brendan Patterson. Also, most of the line returns including seniors Joe Carter (6-2, 260, John Anderson (6-4, 290) and Zach Blickley (6-2, 225). Given that both Neshaminy and South return much of last year’s teams and that it was one of Neshaminy’s best games and South’s worst last year, don’t be surprised by a tight game with the real possibility of an upset. South has some horses this year.
19. Central Bucks East 2-0. East returns a large number of starters as mentioned in the preseason write ups that are showing great dividends now, winning the home opener against Cheltenham 54-14 then going on the road last week to beat Pennridge 16-10 in overtime. Putting that in perspective, East lost at home to Pennridge last year 35-18. That’s quite a start considering last year’s 5-5 record. This week’s opponent, Central Bucks South (1-1) also crushed them last year, 42-24 but this time it’s at East.
20. Pennridge 1-1. The Rams plummetted in the rankings dropping from 13th to 20th this week after their 16-10 overtime home loss to Central Bucks East. At some point in the year they may look back at this one, musing about the one that got away. But you can’t compete for the postseason losing home games and having nine penalties. Still, it was statistically an even game with East edging the Rams 252 - 242 in total yards. The Rams should recover this week at home against Central Bucks West (0-2), a team they beat last year 35-23. Then it gets nasty playing North Penn and Neshaminy on consecutive weekends.

District 11/2/4 Big School Power Ranking: Week 3

I had a tough time sorting out teams 2-5 this week. Parkland is the clear #1, but we have just enough data to misinterpret on the other four teams. Ultimately, I went Wyoming Valley West (who has the best combination of performance and expecatations), Liberty (win over Becahi is the best of any contender), Easton (dominated a presumably good Emmaus team) then Freedom (preseason favorite, but struggled mightily with Nazareth). Lots in flux and week three should bring more clarity as we get more EPC South match ups.

1. Parkland (2-0)
Last Week: Parkland ruined Northampton’s first home game in two years by crushing the Konkrete Kids 35-0 at newly renovated Al Erdosy Stadium. Parkland scored four touchdowns in the first half and called the dogs off after opening the second half with a touchdown drive to put the mercy rule in effect. After a quiet first game against Dieruff, Kenny Yeboah caught 10 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of this one. Devante Cross finished with a typically excellent line of 19-26 for 219 yards and 4 touchdowns. Cross also ran for 75 yards. Once again, it was a lot of short drops and quick hitters on slants and comeback routes. His touchdowns came on a nice sprint out back shoulder throw, a seam route on four verts, and a pair of red zone fades to Yeboah. Parkland’s defense also held the Northampton offense to 26 yards on 22 carries and just 99 yards for the game in the shutout.

Through Two Games: Parkland has crushed inferior competition. What we know is that the offense is going to be high tempo, and Cross wants to either get the ball out of his hands quickly or take off and run. Cross looks to have improved his speed in the offseason, and is really a home run threat with the ball in his hand. He threatened 1,000 yards as a sophomore and a junior, and I think he blows past it this year. What I am starting to wonder is if Parkland has a guy who can stretch the field in the passing game. They’ve been content to dink and dunk down the field against the Dieruffs and Northamptons of the world, but it remains to be seen if there is a speed guy who can get down the field and take the top off of a defense. Yeboah would be the most logical candidate, but virtually all of his catches this season have been on screens, comeback routes, or fades in the red zone. He did have one long reception against Northampton where they totally whiffed on jamming him at the line, so maybe they’re just taking what the defense gives them for the time being.

This Week: Parkland hosts Allentown Central Catholic, in the only match up of undefeated teams in the EPC this week. ACC has a Parkland transfer, Ethan Persa, starting at quarterback, so he should be very familiar with the defenses the Trojans are throwing at him. Of course, that’s a two way street. ACC will be a step up from the teams Parkland has played so far, but they remain a decided favorite and likely won’t be tested until an October 9th trip to BASD Stadium against Liberty.

2. Wyoming Valley West (2-0)
Last Week: The Spartans beat nemesis Delaware Valley 30-6 thanks to a suffocating defensive performance and a big night on the ground from Sean Judge and quarterback Aaron Austin. Judge ran for 110 yards and a touchdown and Austin added 82 yards and two scores, plus 96 through the air. But the big story was the WVW defense, which held Del Val to just 18 yards of total offense in the first half, effectively putting the game out of reach by halftime with an insurmountable 20-0 lead..

Through Two Games: WVW looks like one of the best teams to come out of District 2 since the subregional merger in 2004. They didn’t throw the ball as much Friday against Del Val, but they have real weapons at receiver and a mix of both size and speed on offense. Quarterback Aaron Austin has filled in nicely in his first two games as a starter, with a big game through the air in week one and a big game on the ground in week two. I expect the Spartans to be undefeated come playoff time.

This Week: Wyoming Valley West will be heavily favored against winless Pittston. This one is a tune up for a week four match up with Berwick.

3. Liberty (2-0)
Last Week: Liberty took care of business against William Allen in an uneventful 56-6 route. Three of Doug Erney’s six completions went for touchdowns and the Liberty starters were out by halftime. Victor Santiago has emerged as Erney’s primary target at receiver, catching four passes on Friday. The little slot receiver is great with the ball in his hands and Liberty’s spread maximizes his talents.

Through Two Games: Liberty takes the number three spot because they have the best win of anybody in this tier. Rankings are certainly fluid, but it looks like Liberty is going to have a very dangerous passing game and can get pressure with just four guys on defense. Not many expected them to beat Bethlehem Catholic, let alone had 500 yards of offense against them. Erney is clearly the guy that John Truby spoke so highly of in the preseason. He’s been a "volume" player his first few years, but looks every bit the part of a standout quarterback so far in 2015.

This Week: Liberty travels to Nazareth for the EPC Game of the Week..

4. Easton (2-0)
Last Week: Easton dominated in a 49-7 win on the road at Emmaus. Tailback Nysir Minney-Gratz was electric, scoring touchdowns of 80, 83 and 5 yards on his way to a 205 yard night on just ten carries. The 83 yarder was particularly impressive due to left tackle Craig Stahlecker running with Minney-Gratz and making a block 70 yards downfield to finish the run. Emmaus RB Kyle Boney got his yards, finishing with 151 on 27 carries (including all 76 on Emmaus’s only TD drive), but Easton held the rest of Emmaus’s team to 45 yards on 30 plays.

Through Two Games: Easton is really undersized (no starter on either side of the ball weighs more than 225 pounds) but everybody from the cornerbacks to the offensive linemen can run like hell (as evidenced by the aforementioned Stahlecker block). All that speed has led to huge scoring plays. Against Emmaus, Easton scored on runs of 83, 80, and 60 yards, a 77 yard punt return, a 45 yard fumble recovery, and a 31 yard pass. Their lone touchdown "drive" started at the Emmaus 40 after an interception and featured a 35 yard run by Minney-Gratz on the first play. Against Pleasant Valley, they scored touchdowns on 59 and 33 yard runs and a 60 yard punt return, and set their other TDs up with 50 yard free kick return after a safety, a forced fumble at the 15, and a 40 yard pass down to the 2 after an interception. This is certainly exciting as a fan. However, it’s not always going to be that easy. We’ll see how Easton can put together sustained drives when pushed. On the other side of the ball, the defense has been lights out as anticipated. They’ve forced six turnovers (plus a safety), have seven sacks and three interceptions on 31 drop backs by their opponents, and have given up just two offensive touchdowns. They’re not big, but they’re physical and swarm to the football.

Next Game: Easton hosts Northampton, who have beaten the Red Rovers five times in forty years. This is a perfect opportunity for Easton to get their passing game on track, and I’d love to see the Red Rovers put it in the air 25 times on Friday.

5. Freedom (2-0)
Last Week: Freedom was pushed to the limit by a pesky Nazareth team. The hero was Roberto Diez, who rushed for 169 yards and 3 touchdowns, including the game winner with 1:47 left to play. More importantly, when Nazareth took a 27-24 lead with 5:52 to play, Diez returned the ensuing kickoff all the way to the Nazareth 34 and set up the short field for the winning touchdown. Freedom’s passing game was not sharp against the Blue Eagles, and they pounded the rock with Diez in the second half. Their defense was able to shut down Nazareth’s running game holding Nazareth to 35 yards on 22 carries, but had trouble containing Nazareth’s Jahan Dotson and Julian Liaci, who combined for 14 catches for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Through Two Weeks
: The Freedom defense is getting takeaways at an alarming rate again. ESS turned the ball over 7 times in the opening week, and Freedom forced another 2 turnovers Friday, including a game winning interception with 35 seconds left. They run defense has been phenomenal as opponents are averaging just 1.9 yards per carry. The pass defense has been a mixed bag, as they’ve given up 223 yards per game through the air, but also have four interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Joe Young has not been as sharp as anticipated, which could be to the layoff after the injury or the fact that he’s breaking in new receivers and has lots of production to replace with the graduation of Kylon Pretty and Jake Young. However, Diez looks like he’s really come into his own and is going to be a bell-cow for the offense.

Next Week: The aforementioned run defense will be tested by Kyle Boney and Emmaus. Freedom doesn’t quite have the team speed of Easton, but can match Emmaus with physicality on the lines, particularly with monster defensive ends Cordell Cotto and Joshua Ortiz. They’ll also be licking their chops for takeaways, as Emmaus has been loose with the football early in the season. Offensively, Diez has to look at the box score from last week and get excited, but I’d also expect they’ll want Joe Young to throw a lot early and keep the big Emmaus defense on their toes.

800,000 illegal immigrants have crossed the border in the past 2.5 years...

This from the Center for Immigration Studies this morning, based on census and immigration data and the number is likely on the low side. The overall count during obama's presidency is 2.5 million. The unknown question is how many of these illegals are potential terrorists who are not at all from Mexico or Guatemala, but are from the middle east and took advantage of the weakling president and his liberal position on open borders. Just another example of liberal ideas failing. But I know there are more important things going on like Trump saying bad things, so we should really focus on that. Do you think that ABC, NBC, or CBS will lead with this story tonight?

Ridley 25 Springfield 20 f

Ridley hangs on to win a very physical chippy game. I think the teams combined for well over 200 yards in penalties , many of the personal foul variety. The teams exploded for 4 4th quarter tds after Ridley led 12-7 after three. Ridleys defense was dominant early sacking the Springfield QB early and often. Springfield had two tds aided by questionable penalties. I'm not ready to say either team is quite district 1 playoff ready, but they both are very pesky and annoying teams and will not lose without a fight.

Wood

Wood certainly moved the ball almost at will with many players scoring. Russo to Webb was as expected. I am just not sure of the level of competition they played against other than Allentown was in the South Jersey playoffs. I would be interested in your assessment particularly fbu82 if you still follow Wood. Thanks

Liberals strike again!

Why is it that every damn thing that mindless liberals touch goes south. From Greece to Detroit to Amtrak to obama with the inability to even launch a healthcare website to Baltimore, where the liberal mayor said they needed to let those who wanted to destroy to be able to destroy.

Any now comes word that the some of the left media is spinning the Greece crisis being caused by people not paying enough in taxes. No, it is 40-50 years of liberalism that set the stage for this crisis. It is time for new leadership in Greece, but like in the USA, there are too many single-issue voters and low-information voters who just don't know any better.
