Local player on television

was watching several college games yesterday ,familiar names kept coming up. I know I will probably leave out some ,but here are some that got my attention immediately . John Reid [prep], Jake Cooper [Wood] Saquan Barkley [Whitehall], all Penn State. Notre Dame Will Fuller [Roman], Josh Adams[CB South,Matt Jons[CB South],Zachaius Zacheus [Prep]. I aplologize for the ones I missed.

Lake-Lehman 42, Old Forge 13

PSU bound C/G Connor McGovern and his Lake-Lehman team mates had their way with the undefeated (before yesterday) #7 Class A team in the state...an Old Forge team they've never beaten (0-5) and has traditionally owned WVC teams...and District 2 in general. Lake-Lehman rushed for 390 yard or 459 yards depending on which newspaper account one believes.

That is quite a statement win.

The East: AAAA-Top 20 (11-20)

2015; Week 3 rankings

11. North Penn 1-2. How far can you drop a team going on the road as the 11th ranked team in the East to play the 7th ranked team on their field, coming away with a narrow 28-24 loss? It was a great game with a number of momentum swings but for the most part it hinged on turnovers and penalties. What’s new! Two led to North Penn’s 14-0 lead. The other, a pick with time running out in the fourth quarter prevented a last minute comeback win by the Knights following a touchdown negating penalty! North Penn’s running backs shined with Nyfeese West gaining 192 yards and a touchdown while Justin Ostopowicz had 67 yards on seven carries and catching three passes for 30 yards. Add in Nick Isabella to see what a great group of running backs they have. Quarterback Reece Udinski completed 9 of 23 for 114 yards. Up next is a tough opponent in Pennridge whose only loss was in overtime to undefeated Central Bucks East 16-10. What a war this should be with North Penn facing a typically difficult schedule situation that has them in their third straight road game. A win here means they’ll likely win the next three with Central Bucks South, Souderton and Bensalem on deck, putting them at 5-2 before closing out with Pennsbury, Neshaminy and Abington, the latter two at home.
12. Quakertown 3-0. This veteran group seems on cruise control averaging 40ppg while allowing 8. That theme could continue in the SOL-Continental opener against surprising Tennett (3-0). Like the Panthers, Tennett hasn’t been tested. But the Panthers are a veteran group while Tennett tries to snap a streak of ten consecutive losing seasons. Quakertown escaped with a 21-14 win last year so we’ll see. Unlike last year where the challenges were far and few between, this year sees at least three teams capable of beating them, Norristown, Council Rock North and Central Bucks East.
13. Perkiomen Valley 3-0. The PAC-10 just got a lot clearer with Perkiomen Valley brushing aside one of two challengers by defeating Pottsgrove last week 34-21. Anything can happen over the course of the next few weeks but the big one appears to be the season finale in Royersford against another powerful edition at Spring Ford. Owen J. Roberts (1-2) is next, coming off their first win of the year against Pope John Paul II 43-22. Before that they were blown out by Conestoga and Great Valley. Perk Val won 41-0 last year.
14. Freedom 3-0. Freedom had no trouble with Emmaus’ one dimensional attack (22 pass yards) beating the Green Hornets 28-7. Like Durrah at Easton, quarterback Joe Young for the Pats had a great outing, rushing for 108 yards while completing 11 of 16 passes for 176 yards. Depending on the extent of running back Robert Diez’s lower leg injury, you may be seeing more of that from Young. Otherwise, it was a sharp performance by the balanced and sizeable Patriot attack, rushing for 210 yards and passing for 176. The run should continue next week against 1-2 Northampton. This is probably a bad place to go in cocky knowing the K-Kids last two opponents were Parkland and Easton.
15. Spring Ford 3-0. The Rams moved up from 17th to 15th. Big surprise, Coach Brubaker put another quality product on the field! Facetious for sure but what a great rebuild job was evidently done with the lines and other areas. They are for real knowing the skill they return (see preseason review) and seeing the margins of their wins, beating Phoenixville 58-7 and Upper Perkiomen 53-7 following the season opening 28-25 win against State College. Big offense with a supporting passing attack is a Brubaker hallmark. Since his arrival in 2010, the team’s year ending offensive average is 27, 37, 33, 34, 41ppg. This year’s edition is averaging 46. 1-2 Boyertown is next followed by Methacton before the big one against Pottsgrove.
16. Central Bucks East 3-0. Up from 19 to 16 with a perfect slate and some impressive wins blowing out Cheltenham 54-14, edging Pennridge in overtime 16-10 then beating Central Bucks South last week 40-27. Council Rock North (1-2) is next and always a threat with quarterback Brandon McIlwain under center. North won last year 21-0. Central Bucks East is looking good but the schedule is not favorable with Council Rock South, Norristown and Quakertown all on the road. Remember East ended last year on a 4-1 run, fueled in part by the return of running back Alex Gibson in week six after missing four games and quarterback Jack Lamb getting the nod when Connor O’Keefe when down the fourth week of the season.
17. Pennridge 2-1. Up from 20th to 17. All that separates them from a 3-0 mark was an overtime loss to Central Bucks East in week two. Their other wins were Hatboro Horsham 55-29 and Central Bucks West 34-0 last week. But their biggest test is this week at home for the fourth straight week against North Penn. Expect an all out from the Knights who are already fighting for their playoff lives with a 1-2 record. North Penn won last year 47-22 and they’ll get a pile of points with their schedule but this is a must win situation for them, a game with major ramifications for both.
18. Nazareth 2-1. The Eagles rose from the ranks of the unranked to 18th following consistent performances that preceded the win against Liberty last week. Winning at Stroudsburg 49-47 in the opener then home to Freedom where they lost 31-27 followed by last week’s rebound win against Liberty 37-35 speaks to their competitiveness, maturity over last year and talent at the skill positions as neither Freedom or Liberty could shut them down. Jahan Dotson returned a kickoff 85 yards for six in the third quarter. It wasn’t a balanced attack rushing for a mere 91 yards but they tore up the air lanes, with quarterback Travis Stefanik completing 24 of 36 passes (67%) for 281 yards. Julian Liaci was on the receiving end for nearly half of those snagging 11 for 152 yards including 16-yd and 65-yd touchdowns. Struggling Emmaus (1-2) is next, a team that beat Naz last year 34-27.
19. Liberty 2-1. Liberty was dropped in the polls from 15th to 19th following a hard fought but losing effort on the road at Nazareth, 37-35. Not that there weren’t good things to talk about such as their 305 yards rushing. That alone usually secures a win but not when you have numerous penalties on top of special teams failures, one resulting in a 85-yd kickoff returned for a touchdown, or a secondary so porous (pass rush?) as to allow 281 yards passing. And when you churn out 429 total yards of offense you’re supposed to win the game and do better than 12.25 yards per point. So it’s back to the drawing board especially for the anemic passing attack that saw Doug Erney complete only 12 of 31 passes for 124 yards and pass defense that allowed 281. Scary thinking what Whitehall’s quarterback Gianni Sinatore might do this week against that secondary….IF….his new OL gives him time.
20. Council Rock South 1-2. This has to be one of the best two loss teams in the East with heartbreaking losses to Pennsbury in the opener 13-6 then the two point loss to Neshaminy last week, 27-25. If they make it to the postseason this will be of the teams we all talk about wanting to avoid. Playing in the SOL-Continental, they could not have drawn a tougher slate of non conference SOL opponents unless North Penn was in the mix. The next three weeks could make or break them with home games against Truman, Central Bucks East and Central Bucks West. Wins there put them at 4-2 and right back in the playoff picture. They may not get there but will definitely influence who does!

Given the real risk of career-altering or career-ending injuries in football, the actual chances of a player making the NFL, and the average length of an NFL career, it seems a terrible idea to give up a normal experience of high school for a few years in a football academy. I wonder how many of the players there do community service or join the chemistry club.

D11/2/4 Big School Power Ranking - Week 4

A lot of movement this week. First, Liberty drops from 3 down to 6 after a 37-35 loss to Nazareth, who moves up from 9 to 5. The Blue Eagles jump Bethlehem Catholic, who lost to Liberty, on the strength of two quality wins and the "best" loss of the one-loss group, a last minute 31-27 defeat by #4 Freedom. Easton hops Freedom on the transitive property, their 49-7 win over Emmaus slightly more impressive than Freedom’s 28-7 victory over the same Green Hornet squad. Freedom also unfortunately loses some subjective points with the season ending injury to star running back Roberto Diez. Becahi falls back slightly nobody of note while other teams are starting to gain quality wins, and Liberty has lost some luster after falling from the ranks of the undefeateds. Meanwhile, Saucon Valley went on the road blew out fellow Colonial League and 3A contender Southern Lehigh. Stroudsburg re-enters the rankings after a dominant win over East Stroudsburg South, and some rehabilitation of their close Nazareth loss after an excellent early season showing by the Blue Eagles. Parkland and Wyoming Valley West remain 1 and 2, with Parkland needing to wait another week before their schedule picks up, and the Spartans with a chance to impress this week against Berwick, though I’m not sure how big of a performance would be needed to move them ahead of the Trojans, who are such a consensus favorite.

1. Parkland (3-0)
Last Week: Parkland beat Allentown Central Catholic 28-14 in a workmanlike victory. A solid, but quiet performance from Devante Cross (12-20 for 149 yards, 13 carries, 70 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Parkland got the most production from their ground game this season, getting 87 yards from Eric DiGiralomo and 70 from Jahan Worth. But the big story was Parkland’s defense, which sacked former teammate Ethan Persa seven times and held ACC scoreless until the game was out of reach in the fourth quarter.

Early Star: Eric DiGiralomo made 85 tackles last season as the only underclassman in the linebacking corps. This season, DiGiralomo takes the mantle from Preston Saylor, Nezar Haddad, Matt Laub, Nick Gurinowich, Rob Dvorcek, and the other great Parkland linebackers that serve as the backbone of their defense. DiGiralomo has spent most of his season in opposing backfields in Tim Moncman’s blitz heavy scheme. The Lehigh lacrosse commit is also seeing carries at running back, where he has scored three touchdowns.

This Week: Parkland has their last breather, a home contest with Pocono Mountain West, before the schedule really kicks into high gear. The Trojans finish the season with Whitehall, Liberty, Easton, Freedom, Nazareth, and Emmaus, the toughest six-week stretch of any team in the District.

2. Wyoming Valley West (3-0)
Last Week: The Spartans skated past Pittston, 63-14, with Sean Judge returning two interceptions for touchdowns as the game’s big star. Quarterback Aaron Austin continued his solid debut season under center, completing eight of ten passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns in the first half to put the game away by the break.

Early Star: Wyoming Valley West has been getting the expected big production on both sides of the ball from their stars. I’ll highlight one of the less flashy guys, fullback/middle linebacker Billy Davidson. After leading the Spartans with 88 tackles last season, Davidson has racked up 28 stops, four for loss, plus a pick and a forced fumble on defense. Offensively, Davidson is averaging 13.1 yards per carry, on his way to 144 yards and 2 touchdowns, plus opening up holes from the fullback/H-back spot for Sean Judge.

This Week: Wyoming Valley West’s explosive offense will have to contend with the excellent Berwick defense on Friday. The Dawgs have given up just one offensive touchdown in three games and have not been scored on in nine straight quarters. In last week’s shutout of Dallas Area, Berwick recorded six sacks, and keeping Aaron Austin’s jersey clean will be imperative for Chris Bleich and co. on the WVW offensive line. Offensively, the Dawgs have nowhere near the fire power of the Spartans, but run a grind it out, ball control offense that I think is going to have a lot of trouble against the talented front four on WVW’s defense that can eat space for Davidson and the rest of the Spartan linebackers to come up and stop the run..

3. Easton (3-0)
Last Week: Northampton did exactly what Emmaus wanted to execute; they put 9 guys in the box at all times and limited the Easton running game, daring them to throw. Of course, those results did not go exactly as planned, as Trey Durrah completed 8 of 13 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Trevon Mills caught four passes for 96 yards, tight ends Trey Bailey and Rich Tattolli and running back Nysir Minney-Gratz all caught touchdowns, and Katrell Thompson returned a punt 66 yards for a score, Easton's third in as many games. The Red Rover defense held Northampton to 68 yards of total offense.

Early Star: The Red Rover defense is allowing just 122.6 yards per game (84.3 rushing, 38.6 passing). They’ve allowed just 2.5 yards per carry, and the first team defense has allowed only one touchdown. Steve Shiffert has started comparing it to his 2004 unit which was even more undersized, but had a similar, fast, gang tackling style, and gave up 8.6 points per game to fuel an Eastern Final run. The 2015 group has been fabulous against the pass, getting great pressure from the front four, particularly Daloni Caldwell off of the edge, and they have athletes in the secondary that allow coordinator Doug Powell to implement creative and aggressive schemes with his linebackers.

Next Game
: Easton takes on Allentown Central Catholic. The Vikings couldn’t get much going offensively last week against Parkland, but slowed down the potent Trojan offense, and were particularly impressive limiting the impact of Kenny Yeboah. Easton offers a much different look than the Trojans, but Central has the speed in the back seven to give them problems. And while ACC’s offense remains a work in progress, few playcallers have had as much success against Doug Powell defenses as Rob Melosky.

4. Freedom (3-0)
Last Week: Joe Young carved up Emmaus, completing 13 of 18 passes to seven different receivers for 185 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 106 yards on 13 carries in Freedom’s 28-7 win. The defense uncharacteristically only forced one turnover, but held non-Kyle Boney members of Emmaus’s offense to 57 yards on 31 plays. Boney did rush for 157 yards on 25 carries, but was held without a touchdown for the first time all season.

Early Star: Freedom did suffer a tremendous casualty in Friday’s win, losing running back Roberto Diez for the season with a lower leg injury. Diez was in the midst of a breakout senior campaign, running for 270 yards and 6 touchdowns in Freedom’s first two games and piling up over 50 yards in the first half against Emmaus on eight carries. He had clearly worked very hard in the offseason, putting on a bunch of good weight and looking like a back who could lead his team to a deep playoff run. Now Freedom has to scramble to replace him in the run game for at least the remainder of the regular season, if not for the whole year.

Next Week: Freedom takes on Northampton at newly renovated Al Erdosy Stadium, in the final week of a brutal stretch for the Konkrete Kids, who saw Parkland-Easton-Freedom all in a row. Northampton is better, but has not moved the ball much in the last two weeks, and the prospects aren’t good against the Freedom defense. Easton and Parkland both carved them up through the air, and Joe Young will be expected to do the same.

The East: AAAA-Top 20 (1-10)

1. Parkland 3-0. Parkland bolted to a 21-0 half time lead then held on while Allentown Central Catholic stormed back with a 14-7 outburst that tightened things but fell short as the Trojans prevailed 28-14. Looks like Central Catholic is a legitimate player at the AAA classification after forcing Parkland to play four quarter football. As always, quarterback Devante Cross’s presence was felt, completing 12 of 20 passed for 150 yards while rushing for 74 on 13 carries. A great addition is the developemt of sophomore Jahan Worth, rushing for 74 yards on 20 carries. The Panthers of Pocono Mountain West are up next and at 0-3 they are definitely not on the prowl, allowing 45ppg. The game is at Pocono Summit.
2. St. Joseph’s Prep 2-1. Almost jumped Parkland for the top spot with their 35-6 win against St. Ignatius until thinking that logic would be just as bent as penalizing them the week before for losing to Don Bosco. So here they are at #2 on a little R&R with a bye week. Surprisingly, they had no trouble with St. Ignatius (2-2, 15th OH), racing out to a 21-0 first quarter lead that grew to 28-0 at the half. The stats were all Hawks; total yards, 328-273; ry 148-111; py 180-162; first downs 20-15; third down conversions 7/10-1/9 and time of possession 28.20 to 21.50. Standout running back D’Andre Swift rushed for 109 yards on 20 carries for a score and caught four passes for 79 yards with two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Kevin Shaw had a good outing against a quality secondary completing 12 of 23 passes for 180 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Side note; the Wildcats played without two injured senior offensive lineman, tackle Liam Eichenberg (6-6, 285, Notre Dame) and guard Michael Bodnar (6-3, 255).
3. Coatesville 3-0. Thanks in part to numerous Cahillite errors, Coatesville scratched and clawed their way to a 17-3 half time lead despite a stern Roman defense that shut much of their attack down. It took a 44-yd run for a touchdown by Jordan Young in the fourth quarter to seal the 24-3 win at the South Philadelphia Super Site. As good as Roman’s D was Coatesville’s was better, holding them to a season low three points. Henderson (1-2) is next as the Ches Mont National finally gets underway. They come in off a un-Henderson like 28-7 loss to Solanco (3-0, AAA) of the LL-2. In defense of the graduation wracked Warriors and although a perennial no-show, the Mules have some stuff under second year coach Tony Cox running the triple option (6-5 last year, in weight room this) with a veteran backfield and defense. Henderson usually takes care of teams like Solanco making this look like a tough outing unless the Red Raiders are caught looking past them to Downingtown West the following week. Being the conference opener and an Ortega coached team, that’s unlikely.
4. Easton 3-0. Easton’s special teams were again center stage returning a punt for six on the way to an easy 42-7 win over Northampton. Quarterback Trey Durrah had a great game completing 8 of 13 passes for 208 yards while tossing three touchdowns. Their swarming defense totally shut down the Konkrete Kids while opening up a 35-0 second quarter lead. The coming week’s game at Allentown Central Catholic will be interesting for a number of reasons. First off, it will answer how well the Vikings recovered from a hard game against Parkland and secondly, it will show us how much pressure the Rovers will be able to put on a decent line and quarterback Ethan Persa who is good enough to test their secondary given time. The DL/rush is a Rover strength so it could be a long day for the Vikings.
5. LaSalle 2-1. In something of a role reversal, it was LaSalle that came out looking like the fourth ranked team in the country (USA-Today) as they jumped the Stags early, building a surprising 12-3 half time lead. Thereon something close to a nationally ranked team (fourth) emerged with DeMatha rolling in the second half, shutting down the Explorers while scoring four touchdowns to pull away for a 32-12 win. LaSalle’s points came on a first quarter field goal and two second quarter scores; a fumble recovered for a safety and a 10-yd Chris Ferguson to Nick Rinella touchdown pass. The beat continues this weekend at home against powerful Malvern Prep (2-0). The Friars are led by quarterback Nick Maras (6-2, 190, jr) who was other-worldly against St. Rita in the opener completing 17 of 21 for 352 yards. Behind him are speedster Zac Fernandez who had 12 carries for 78 yards and sophomore O’Shaan Allison. The line features players like Jack Glavin (6-3, 290, jr) and Joe Basiura (6-3, 285) a sophomore. All totaled the Friars had 524 total yards of offense. About their schedule; they opened at Soldiers Field in Chicago beating St. Rita (1-2) of the formidable Chicago Catholic League, 37-0. St. Rita plays alongside serious football programs including Mount Carmel Academy, Brother Rice, not to be confused with Brother Rice in Bloomfield Hills-MI….and Providence Catholic. They, along with MCA are the gold standard in the CCL-Blue Conference so it was a significant win given SR’s 99-31 won-loss over the last 10 years. The following week saw Malvern demolish Holy Spirit-NJ, 34-0 with sophomore running back O’Shaan Allison (5-8, 185) showing his skills rushing for 244 yards on ten carries. LaSalle won last year 27-8 when two very different teams took the field.
6. Upper Dublin 3-0. Upper Dublin appears to be one of the teams that could get through the regular season unscathed or with one loss. The only thing resembling a loss is a road game at Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-0) October 9th. The Colonials are off to a great start plugging in a new OL and quarterback, evidently going with Joe Stoberl over last year’s co-starter Anthony Mirabile. The returning backs are veteran and talented; Nafeese Nasir and Jake Winterbottom. Both will likely come into the game undefeated at 6-0. Back to the Cardinals; last week saw them get their pound of flesh and then some beating one of the few teams to defeat them last year, Abington, 55-14. Cheltenham is next followed by Springfield and Wissahickon where they’ll ramp up the offense early in what looks like three mercy ruled games before Whitemarsh.
7. Downingtown East 3-0. Two of the state’s most storied programs met Friday night under the lights at Kottmeyer in one of the better early season games in years, pitting undefeated Downingtown East against the once beaten North Penn Knights. North Penn took a 14-0 lead off recovered fumbles in the first quarter but thereon it was all Downingtown, holding the Knights in check while outscored them 28-10. It was not without drama as a North Penn score that would have won the game with under two minutes to go was negated by a penalty. The following play was intercepted in the end zone allowing the Cougars to hold on for the 28-24 win. After watching this one you came away impressed with the skill players on both teams. North Penn is knee deep in running backs (West, Isabella, Ostopowicz) with a lanky junior quarterback (Udinski) while Downingtown shows much the same in senior quarterback Saunders Healy (11/14/168, 2Tds), running back Jack Kincade (25/124) and wide out Cary Angeline, their 6-7, 235 pound commit to So Cal. Up next is an improved 2-1 Avon Grove team with running back Nate Jones (5-9, 180, jr) leading the way with 502 yards rushing. QB Shane McLaughlin (6-1, 190, sr) unwound for 226 yards passing last week in a 27-17 loss to Unionville. The Cougar lines should dominate here but look for the Red Devils to play inspired ball early in their home opener.
8. Downingtown West 3-0. The Whippets had a great trip up 322 about 100 miles northwest of Harrisburg in Lewistown playing at Bucknell University where they defeated Mifflin County 42-14. As expected this was no contest with the Huskies in full rebuild mode. The Whippets line overpowered the young Huskies, holding them to 30 yards rushing and 160 total yards of offense. Offensively, Downingtown was balanced, rushing for 212 yards while quarterback Thomas Mattioni was on target for 10 of his 13 passes totaling 175 yards. They’re home this week against Kennett (1-2) where they should roll before what will be one of the top games in the state when Coatesville visits next week.
9. Neshaminy 2-1. Neshaminy survived a scare but a scare from a team we all knew presented a challenge based on recent performance. The Golden Hawks came into this one off a 43-13 Bensalem win preceded by a 13-6 season opening loss to Pennsbury. Meanwhile the Skins were attempting to rebound from a tough home opening loss to Downingtown West 20-14 on the heels of an exciting 37-31win at Montclair-NJ the week before. Weirdly enough, this one had a boring start with both deadlocked at seven a piece by the end of the first half. But it got real exciting in the second half where the Skins outscored the Hawks 20-18, winning on a failed 2-pt conversion attempt, 27-25. Abington is next where the Skins have to take great care as the Ghosts will be fighting just to keep their heads above water, ie….a .500 season sitting as they are at 0-3!
10. Pennsbury 2-1. Pennsbury found an offense, well sort of, thanks in part to the porous allowances provided by the Council Rock North defense with the Falcons winning easily 41-19. In truth, the lack of defense at CR North has become a hallmark, allowing season ending 26ppg and 30ppg in 2013 and 2014 and 126 points through three games this year; a 41ppg average. Still, its tonic to the team, getting the offense rolling and pumping everybody up. A 2-1 Souderton is up next with a season opening 20-14 overtime loss standing between them and a perfect record. It’s the SOL-National opener and Souderton actually plays defense so look for a good one as the Indians have a way of sneaking up on teams over the years.

Way too early Playoff point rough first go round

I figured it would be fun to see where the current field would sit after just three weeks. Here we go. Please bear with me as this was done very quickly and may have some errors. I will comment on the games that I know anything about. Feel free to comment.
1. DTW 3-0 340 PTS
Missing points for West Mifflin. Big win over Neshaminy will get them a ton of points come crunch time. I've always been impressed with how prepared they are even if they are physically outmatched. When this coach gets talent they are that much better. Playing Kennent this week should be a mercy rule game.
2. PW 3-0 340 PTS
PW looks to be the only real challenge for Upper Dublin in the SOL American, PW has a pure athlete that the coach does a great job of moving around and getting him in space. Kid went 95 yards first play of the game against Souderton on a bad snap...............speed speed speed. Mixed with a little triple option and zone read. Chang always has his team ready. PW plays Upper Merion and should score 40..............in the first quarter.
3. CB East 3-0 340 points
East has an impressive win under their belt at Pennridge in overtime. It was a sloppy game but East has a strong QB in lamb who can run around you or over you......or just give it to Gibson. They play at 1pm on Saturday against THE ONE MAN SHOW CR NORTH. East will out score North as North may be the worst defense in the Suburban One.
4. Upper Dublin 3-0 330 Points
UD is the real deal and so is their QB. He can run it , throw it and has the size to be a D1 kid. I was more impressed with the 3-4 they play.....they are a high pressure attacking defense that creates turnovers. They will mercy rule Cheltenham this weekend. UD scares me as they wont be tested all year outside of PW later in the year. Its always a case of what happens when they punch someone in the face and they just smile and ask for more the first time.
5. Downington East 3-0 320 points
DTE is always well coached and Matta has been there forever. Their TE is a man child and its apparent he gained a ton of strength and worked on blocking technique this year as I though he was soft as TE last year. The kid is an ASS KICKER! They own on a controversial call against North Penn last week and that will will pay dividends when it comes down to the nitty gritty come play off time. They play Bishop Shannahan who last year was a tough out but Im not to sure about this year.
6. Coatesville 3-0 310 Missing points from the dc team they played this year.
Speed Speed Speed is the word at Coatesville as it is every year. Matt Artega has proven hiselft to be one of the better coaches in district one. They lay WCHenderson and should roll
7. Perk Valley 3-0 300 point
Perk Valley is always tough they run a no huddle fast paced offense and have the athletes to do it, Defensively they are an attacking 3-3-5 stack defense that gives spread teams fits. My only concern is that to of their three wins have come of BAD 3a teams............but in their defense, they beat em like they stole something, like they were supposed to. They should pound Owen J Roberts this weekend
8. Quakertown 3-0 310 points
This another team that I would say hasn't played anyone, 1 win for all three teams that they have defeated. But they do have a solid returning cast of athletes so I think they are for real. They are always tough on defense and on offense they have opened things up this year to utilize the talents of their tall qb who came back from wood. They play at number 9 Tennent this Friday
9. Tennent 3-0 300 points
Tennent is gunning for its first winning season since 2005, their first 3 opponents have 0 wins between them. This game is a great test for them and Quakertown. Winner essentially only needs three more wins to get into the playoffs and the loser is left second guessing themselves after beating up the sisters of the poor the first three weeks. Quakertown wins this one........big.
10. SpringFord 3-0 280 points
Brubaker has build a district power house over by grateford. They are in the playoff mix every year and thats what its all about. Consistency. My only question is...........Who have they played? a couple of 3a teams so its hard to gauge them. I don't see them being tested at all in the PAC. Maybe late in the year by Pottsgrove but outside of that I see them running the table and getting a high seed. Their no huddle and athletes are too much for Boyertown
11.Neshaminy 2-1 270 points
Steve Wilmont has seemed to right the ship after the Fredricks show left town. Neshaminy is back to doing what it does best. Lifting in the offseason and smashing people up front. I expect it to be them,Pennsbury, and Npenn for the National. They open league play with an Abington a team that is way down. Skins roll
12. Unionvillege 2-1 270 points
Unionville has developed into one of District ones more solid programs. They always seem to come into the SOLs backyard come playoff time and give em hell. They will get to 3-1 over rustin
13. Souderton 2-1 250 points
Souderton is always a tough out but in watching them vs PW its hard to see what they want to be on offense. They have been wing t for years but Gallagher has gone away from that an employed more spread sets and the use of the wing t out of gun. Be what you are.............They are very well coached and always have tough hard nosed kids. They open league play with a Pennsbury team that may just be too much
14. Truman 2-1 250 points
What a great story they are, A few years back they were quitting games at half time, last year they were on the cusp of the playoffs before inexplicably losing to Norristown. (all part of the learning process) They lost to one of the best teams in the district 38-7 and it was not even that close. If they took the easy route and played a soft schedule they could easily be 3-0. They open league play with CR South. This is going to be a great game. Two of the best option coaches in district one. I see south being too big up front and wearing the tigers down.
15. Pennsbury 2-1 240 points
I expect them to blow the doors off Souderton this week and lose one more game on the way......
16. Norristown 2-1 240
I like doing this early so we can talk about teams like this. Norristown is in their last year in the SOL before bolting to the PAC. Wouldn't it be something if they made some noise? They are always tough early on until the eligibility issues creep up. It has been that way for years. They will beat west and get to 3-1.

other 2-1 Teams/games
Upper Darby/Ridley-----Ridley
Avon Grove/DTE--------DTE big
GV/Lower Merion----gv
Pennridge/Npenn -----------Npenn big
