EPC Power Rankings - Week 3

1. Bethlehem Catholic Golden Hawks (3-0)
State Rankings (4A): 2nd (MaxPreps), 5th (PA Football News), 5th (PennLive)

Last Week: The Golden Hawks used big plays and timely defensive stops to knock off preseason favorite Emmaus and plant themselves firmly in the EPC South driver’s seat. After falling beind 14-0 through the first two possessions of the game, Becahi rallied back, breaking a 21-21 tie on a Zaheer Seabrooks touchdown run from 46 yards out with 6:09 to play. Offensively, the Hawks used big plays to get themselves back, answering those opening Emmaus scores with a 78 yard TD pass from Javon Clements to Daizhun Rhodes on a play action pitch play, a 58 yard pick-6 by Shamus Williams, and a big punt return that set up a Tavion Banks TD run. Banks was the star of the show, rushing 33 times for 147 yards and the TD. Rhodes caught 9 passes for 148 yards and the long score. Javon Clements struggled with his efficiency (12-22), but racked up 191 yards through the air. Defensively, the Golden Hawks harassed Blake Reed into a 6-20 performance for 98 yards, with 58 coming on a long TD in on Emmaus’s second possession.

Contender or Pretender?: The Golden Hawks walked through the first two weeks before being pushed by a good Emmaus team on Friday. But this looks every bit like a group that is going to challenge for big things in the Class 4A playoffs across the state. Rhodes and Banks look like one of the best receiver/running back combos in the state, with Rhodes averaging 19 yards per catch and Banks rushing for 427 yards in the first three weeks. I’ve said in this space before, Banks is a superstar in the making if he isn’t already. The defense has also been vicious, and really showed a lot of heart buckling down Friday after a disastrous opening. The difference between them being good and them being great will be if Javon Clements really takes the next step. He wasn’t asked to do a lot the first two weeks, and was solid but not spectacular on Friday. Being more accurate and spreading the ball around (9 of his 12 completions were to Rhodes on Friday) will help their running game become even more lethal.

Next Week: Becahi hosts Nazareth, who has piled up a ton of points in their first two weeks. Becahi is the decided favorite, but has to contend with Tom Falzone’s dangerous offense that has been clicking on all cylinders early in the season.

2. Parkland Trojans (3-0)
State Ranking (6A): 3rd (PA Football News), 3rd (PennLive), 6th (MaxPreps)

Last Week: Parkland put together a full crock-potting of Liberty, scoring in each quarter and completely suffocating the Hurricanes defensively to come away with a 24-7 win. The Trojans limited Liberty to 159 yards and forced 4 turnovers. Liberty’s offense stayed out of the end zone all night, their only points coming on a blocked punt for a touchdown with 26 seconds left in the game. Parkland gave up some yards on the ground to QB Todd Erney (11 carries for 75 yards), but otherwise squelched the Liberty offense. A relentless Parkland pass rush did not allow a completion of more than 5 yards and star Liberty running back Nasir Legree was limited to 35 yards. Offensively, Parkland only threw for 36 yards, but controlled the clock with 110 yards and 2 TDs from Jahan Worth and 205 total yards on the ground.

Contender or Pretender?: Once again, the Parkland defense is excellent, and they’ve allowed just 13 points in the first three weeks of the season. They’re a little smaller than normal up front, but play really strong assignment football and have a pair of star linebackers in Worth and Mason Malozzi. Offensively, Worth has rushed for 303 yards and 7 touchdowns in the first three weeks. The passing game really opened up against Nazareth, but took a step back on Friday. The Trojans are getting a lot of love in state polls (ranked as high as 3rd in 6A) and still have yet to play a truly complete football game.

This Week: Parkland takes on Easton in our EPC Game of the Week.

3. Easton Red Rovers (3-0)
State Rankings (6A): 6th (PennLive), 7th (MaxPreps), Team to Watch (PA Football News)

Last Week: Easton won a gut-check game, grinding out a 13-10 win without an offensive touchdown over an good, young Freedom team. Easton, playing without starting QB Scott Poulson, trailed 10-3 at halftime, but used a 72 yard punt return TD by Jake Herres and a long drive that culminated in a field goal with 4 minutes left to sneak past Freedom. Easton’s defense came up big, holding Freedom to 151 total yards (just 52 on the ground) and harassing sophomore QB Jared Jenkins into a 9-20 evening for 99 yards. Jenkins came into the night averaging 270 yards per game through the air. Offensively, the Red Rovers running game got on track for the first time all year, with senior Izzy Selassie running for 153 yards on 21 carries and wearing down the Freedom defense late. With Poulson out of school the last three days with the flu, backup QB Nate Nimeh turned in a crisp 11-15 for 113 yards and completed passes to 6 different receivers. Most of his completions were on screens and hitch routes, but he made the throws he was asked to and kept the offense moving. Herres was bottled up on offense, catching just 2 passes for 18 yards after last week’s 7-132-2 effort, but he had an interception on defense and returned the punt for Easton’s only TD.

Contender or Pretender?: Friday night will tell us a lot. The Easton defense looks like one of the best eastern Pennsylvania has to offer, particularly in stopping the run where they are yielding 1.7 yards per carry. None of Easton’s first three opponents have gained more than 152 yards of total offense. The passing game also looks like it can be a weapon and it was good to see it working even without their regular quarterback. Assuming Poulson is good to go, the offense can move it through the air. Where Easton really needs to prove themselves is in the running game. Friday was the first time they really moved the ball effectively on the ground, mostly running behind center Patrick Shupp (6’4 295) and left guard Albert Gayle (6’1 255). Shupp in particular looks great, and the sophomore should be on college radars very soon. I’m not ready to say they’re in the tier with Becahi and Parkland just yet, but they can prove me wrong Friday night.

Next Week: Easton travels to Parkland to take on their EPC nemesis in our EPC Game of the Week.

4. Whitehall Zephyrs (3-0)
State Rankings (5A): 4th (PennLive), 4th (MaxPreps), Team to Watch (PA Football News)

Last Week: Holy shoot out! Whitehall and Nazareth combined to put up 100 points and 1,046 yards of total offense in Whitehall’s 51-49 win. Whitehall quarterback Ethan Parvel continued his spectacular debut season with 338 yards of total offense (223 passing and 115 rushing) and six total touchdowns (3 pass/3 rush). Running back Braxton Marrero was held under 100 yards for the first time all season (21 carries for 75 yards), but Dez Boykin ran for 113 yards on just 4 carries in the jet sweep portion of the Whitehall read option. Boykin also caught 7 passes for 40 yards and Joe Herman had a breakout game, catching 3 passes, all for TDs, for 119 yards from Parvel. Defensively, Whitehall gave up a ton of yards, getting torched through the air by sophomore Anthony Harris, who threw for 319 yards and 5 TDs. Still, the Whitehall offense was too explosive and withstood the Nazareth onslaught.

Contender or Pretender?: This one is difficult in terms of the conference. Whitehall is averaging 49 points per game and is giving up 32. That’s a hard way to win a lot of football games in a good league. Still, the offense has been lethal. Parvel gives them a new dimension, as he’s as big a threat rushing as he is throwing. Whitehall has been long at the vanguard of the spread zone-read scheme, and Parvel runs it really well. From his Hudl, it looks like Whitehall has incorporated a lot of RPO with the read option and a slant read to Boykin, which they exploited for huge yards. He’s a great decision maker and has the wheels to be dangerous. Whitehall also has an experienced offensive line and a dangerous set of skill guys. It’s the best offense in the Lehigh Valley. The question then becomes, can their defense make enough stops for them to win games. So far the answer has been yes. And I think in the 5A postseason they’ll be a monster (until they run into Wood). But that’s a tough way to go through a season.

Next Week: Whitehall takes on a reeling Liberty team at home. A third straight loss would be close to a knockout blow for the Hurricanes and Whitehall would head into the toughest stretch of their season (Easton, Parkland, Freedom, Becahi) at 4-0.

3 Games that caught my eye...Sept. 15-16

Last week: 3-0
Overall: 4-2

Archbishop Wood (2-1) @ St. Joe’s Prep (2-0) (-6) at Widener University
This is the matchup of the season in SEPA so far as PCL Heavyweights go at it a week after proving PA’s strength with wins over North Jersey privates Bergen Catholic and St. Peter’s Prep. Prep comes in with #13 ranking in USA Today and look like an early favorite to repeat as 6A champs. Wood is the defending 5A champions and surely won’t be intimidated by the Prep. QB Marquez McCray has been a steady underrated leader for this team and is getting help from soph RB Kobe Burrell & a tenacious D that rarely gives ground. Wood is looking to grind and run right through you but has improved in the passing game with the development of QB Jake Colyar. I think this matchup of strength on strength will be fun to watch. I think this has the makings of a slugfest with the last team to have the ball getting the victory…..SJP 21-17

Coatesville (2-1) (-9) @ Downingtown West (2-1)
These two longtime rivals out of the Ches-Mont will begin league play in what will be a huge factor in determining the favorite right out of the gate. D-West surprised many last week by winning at Heartbreak Ridge and becoming the most difficult team to read in SEPA. Are they the team that got hammered by a good (but not great) Perk Valley team or should they be a sleeper given their road win at Neshaminy? Coatesville starts league play after showing some of their youth in a Wk 2 loss at Cumberland Valley. No shame in losing to the D3 power but they have to feel like they let one slip away after being up 14-0 at the half. RB Aaron Young got going last week with 187 yards and 5 TD’s. The Coatesville O is one of the toughest matchups in D1 with skill all over. West gave up some huge plays against Neshaminy & they seem to struggle on that side of the ball. My best guess is Coatesville is a little more explosive than D-West and they will have their way scoring on the Whippets….Coatesville 38-24

Marple Newtown (2-1) @ Ridley (1-2) (-2.5)
This is a big game for the Green Raiders as a loss this week could make it a tough task to get into the postseason with road games against Springfield (Delco) and Upper Darby still on the schedule. Marple Newtown is led by QB Anthony Paoletti, who is headed to the University of Delaware, but also has some great weapons in RB Marlon Weathers and WR Dash Dulgerian. HC Chris Gicking has come home and turned Marple into a legit 5A and Central League contender year in and year out. Ridley’s tradition of hard nosed D will be tested this week but I like Ridley to keep their postseason hopes alive….Ridley 27-24

The West: 6A Top 10….September 13th

1 Pine Richland 3-0, D7; This offense is in mid-season form, rolling over Seneca Valley 42-7 while getting all their points in the first half. No one expected an upset but maybe a little more from rival Seneca Valley. Maybe not with the offense on fire scoring 41, 53 and 42 points their first 3 games! And with a quarterback like Phil Jurkovec completing 77% of his passes (17/22) for 256 yards and 3 Td passes while rushing for another 2 scores, he is an offense unto himself. Receiver Raymond Falcone who never drops a pass caught 5 for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns, making this one of the top combos in the East, and nearly an unstoppable force. Undefeated Penn Hills is next at PR who won last year 52-21.

2 Cumberland Valley 2-0, D3; Make that 6 quarters without a score on CV’s active defense (blanked Coatesville 2nd half) as they shut out Central York 35-0, keeping Qb Chris Pribula throwing underneath all night. The Eagles took few prisoners allowing 195 total yards. 2-1 McDevitt is next, fresh off an impressive win against Canisius-NY. CV won last year 24-14.

3 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 2-1, D7; Not a lot of bells and whistles when these two tangle but a solid win none the less as the Vikings get a road and conference win (3rd straight road) at Wexford defeating North Allegheny 14-7. Their fourth consecutive road game sees them in Greensburg Friday taking on Hempfield (1-2) who they beat last year 55-6. A win here then next week in the home opener against Sen Val (nothing like a midseason home opener!?) puts them with some momentum heading to Pine Richland for a Northern 7 showdown.

4 Manheim Township 2-0, D3; Township is rounding into a potent group, lighting up the scoreboard in Hanover beating South Western’s Mustangs 42-0, holding them to 3 first downs and 50 total yards of offense. Another group of Mustangs is in town this week when Governor Mifflin comes to Lancaster. Coming in off a 42-21 defeat at the hands of undefeated 5A terror Cocalico (2-0) says they’ll be ready. Mifflin won last year 28-20.

5 State College 2-0, D6; Like Pine Richland the Lions are in midseason form blasting Hollidaysburg 55-27 while generating 476 total yards of offense. Super soph Isaiah Edwards showed em how it’s done with 3 Tds and 172 rushing. Senior Tristen Lyons added 116 with Qb Tom Friberg toting it for 128! They’re having a lot of fun up in State College building a powerful, balanced machine. Mifflin County is next, a team they routed last year 51-7.

6. Wilson 1-1, D3; Dropped below State High after “escaping” rebuilding Spring Ford 28-21 and allowing 342 yards of offense. Rams Qb TJ Pergine shredded them for 278 yards, completing 23 of 34 passes for 68%. Not exactly vintage Wilson! This is not one of Central Dauphin’s strongest teams with essentially a full rebuild, but the Bulldogs still need to bring it at home Friday with CD in off a bye. The Rams won last year 24-6. This is a good gage of district strength with CD coming off a 17-14 loss at Manheim Twp 2 weeks ago and Township being the sole road block to Wilson’s 10th consecutive Lancaster Lebanon League-Section-1 title.

7 Bethel Park 2-0, D7; Bethel Park jumped Central Dauphin in the rankings after another strong defensive performance last week shutting down previously undefeated Peters Township 28-7. The Black Hawks front was near flawless, holding PT to 98 rush yards. And the O-Line did their thing springing Joe Doleno (13/196!) and Tanner Volpatti (19/102) for 298 yards rushing. 2-1 Norwin is next at Bethel and likely in for a hard night losing to a far lesser group last year 22-13.

8 Central Dauphin 1-1, D3; Central Dauphin was idle last week coming off a hard fought 17-14 loss to Manheim’s Blue Streaks. They’ll need a good effort in this one containing Wilson’s cannon-ball of a running back Iggy Reynoso and company in their cozy confines and great venue that is Gurski Field. These two are going to be sore at the end of this one. The Bulldogs and Rams do go at it!

9 Mt Lebanon 2-1, D7; Check out Lebo back in at 9 after taking Hempfield down hard, 31-0, although Hempfield was without Qb Justin Sliwoski, out with a separated shoulder vs C-Mac. This put a sophomore under center who was sacked 7 times. Importantly Qb James Stocker is back for the Blue Devils giving them great depth at the position where Seth Morgan filled in admirably. This combining with an aggressive and sizeable defensive front makes them a force in the district. They’re at Canon McMillan Friday

10 Williamsport 3-0, D4: Ran into a nasty Hazelton team that came to play before bowing out in a tight one 28-26. Williamsport had to overcome a 19-7 deficit, but got it going, rolling out 474 yards of offense to eke out the win. Qb Joe Fagnano threw for 278 yards. The Millionaires are home to struggling 0-3 Wyoming Valley West, a team they defeated last year 35-22. If they get past Valley West and they’ve had some good ones….then Scranton and Del Val in a few weeks, they’ll cruise through the rest of the schedule unscathed, setting up a great home finale against Berwick. Nice!

Others:

North Allegheny 1-2, D7; Dropped out of Top 10 but will influence things getting back on track at home against Shaler.

Peters Township 2-1, D7; At Altoona to rebound from the Bethel loss.

Penn Hills 3-0, D7; At Pine Richland for a reality check despite speed and athletes.

Canon McMillan 2-1, D7; Home to Mt. Lebanon. C-Mac can score points!

Norwin 2-1, D7; Tough one at Bethel Park then home to Canon McMillan

Central Dauphin East 2-0, D3; Home against city rival Susquehanna Twp (1-1) but should roll.

Central York 2-1, D3; Home licking their wounds to play Hempfield’s Black Knights. Should be a tussle. Central won last year 48-42.

Red Lion 2-0, D3; Picking up where they left off last year (10-1, 37-11ppg avg) at 35ppg on a total rebuild off the 1st round loss to CD East last year. Should handle Chambersburg on road.

Ridley?

When are the powers that be or even the head coach going to realize that this offensive coordinator and his system are antiquated, and do not fit with the Green Mystique? They wasted a ton of talent last year running this option crap, and won games because of their defense. Anyone with any idea on how to defend shut them down last year. This year looks to be the same old story.

NG vs. Interboro

What a game last evening played at the South Philly Supersite. Interboro started out with some good fundamental misdirection plays to put up the first points. NG returned the favor with a KO to pull it even 6-6 (missed PATs for both teams). After that Interboro took advantage of costly fumbles to up the score to 25-6 by 2nd QT. The crowd on the NG side was a surprisingly nice turnout (and will get better) for Coach Albie's first debut at the NG helm.

Midway through the 2nd QT the NG hitsticks became the factor in forcing at least 3 consecutive fumbles. Each time scoring on those possessions. The end result was NG 54-25 over Interboro.

Looking forward to seeing the NG program play this season!
