Q&A with Big Spring strong safety Spencer Cachara

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Our season as a whole was successful. We made districts which is a big accomplishment for Big Spring.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I only play football so I’m lifting and running until next fall.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I have a good feeling that next season will be very successful as well. We have a lot of returning starters combined with a lot of young talent.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“In my opinion, I feel that Susquehanna Township will be our toughest opponent. We have a new schedule this year so I’m unfamiliar with some of the teams.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Our toughest individual player would have to be Lex Cyrus from Susquehanna Township.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I do want to play football in college. It has always been a dream of mine to play college ball.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I haven’t had a ton of recruitment thus far. However, Penn invited me to their upcoming Junior Day.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I wouldn’t say I am being recruited the hardest from any school. My recruitment has been pretty off and on.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I haven’t made any trips for college yet.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“Penn on March 16th will likely be my first.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up and til this day is Notre Dame. It’s been a family tradition to cheer for them.”

Q&A with Schuylkill Haven cornerback Leyden Hertz

How did the high school football season go overall?
“This year went amazing, we went from having 4 wins the past 2 years to making it all the way to the district championship. For me as an individual it also went great. On the defensive side I was named 1st team all-county, all-area and all-state as a CB. I also made honorable mention for the Big Eastern team and finished the season with 6 interceptions and one touchdown allowed. For offense I was named 2nd team all-county WR and averaged 14.6 yards per catch.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I am currently in basketball season right now, we made districts and leagues but after the season I plan on spending my spring and summer lifting daily and going to agility classes, I want to work on my footwork as well as my explosiveness. I also plan on attending college camps and visiting campuses to really get my name out there and bring my recruiting up more.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We had a great team last year and we will definitely lose [some] good components to our squad but I feel like we have some studs on the team and we can be just as great if not better than last year if we put our focus on where it needs to be during the season, but more importantly the offseason.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I would say Blue Mountain will be our toughest opponent. Not only is it a rivalry game but they also are well coached but are [also] a bigger school and have a deeper roster.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“I would say Dante Carr, he’s a great player and had good size, he has great speed and is just an overall good football player.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“100% football, I have loved the sport since I was young and feel like I can reach my full potential as an athlete playing football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Colgate has been a big one for me recently as well as some other schools such as Gettysburg and Franklin and Marshall. I have had talks with Kings College as well. I am hoping in the next upcoming months my recruiting really takes a jump because I used to have my focus on basketball which has really had me come in late to the recruiting scene of football but I am really hoping to get my name out there soon so colleges can see the great player I am.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I wouldn’t say a school is recruiting me harder than any other but I will say I have had some good talks with Colgate and am looking forward to visiting their campus soon as well as attending their junior day and a home game this coming season.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have visited some colleges for basketball but I haven’t yet for football, and that just leads back to me being late to the scene. But I will definitely be making some visits this spring and summer to some colleges and visiting their football facilities.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“Yes I will be hopefully visiting Colgate soon as well as some other schools in the future.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up my family was definitely a Penn State family so I think I was adopted into that love for the team but overall I just love watching my favorite players ball out on the tv regardless of the team.”

Q&A with Pennridge outside linebacker Ryan Rowe

How did the high school football season go overall?
“My sophomore season was awesome. I put a lot of work in the weight room last summer knowing I would be younger and I felt prepared physically out there. I was happy with my adjustments to the speed of the game. I also had great coaching to help me progress technically. Thankful for that amount of experience as a sophomore.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Right now I’m focused on wrestling. My High School, Pennridge, is headed out to Hershey tomorrow to compete for a state championship. We have very intense workouts but when the season ends I’m immediately focused on football and improving speed, strength and explosiveness.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Last year was an investment year with the addition of a new coaching staff. Coach Beller has committed a lot of time and energy into the off season getting Pennridge back to where they belong. I’m optimistic about next year. We will be ready.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“In wrestling, your opponent doesn’t matter as much as you wrestling within yourself and performing at your best. Sometimes it’s good enough and sometimes it isn’t. But you learn the value of preparation and focusing only on what you can control. The opponent doesn’t matter to me. We each have to do our jobs collectively and the results will take care of themselves.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“It doesn’t matter to me. I will be ready. We will be ready. We are focused on what we can control.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Being a sophomore I am not able to be recruited right now.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“Right now I am focused on wrestling. But I have seen some camp dates open up. Princeton is definitely my front runner right now. Love that campus and the academic opportunities there. Also nice that it’s so close to home. I will definitely be at several camps this summer to learn as much as I can and bring that back to Pennridge.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I’ve always been a huge Princeton fan.”

6A is down this year

It seems to me that 6A is down this year across the state. The wpial doesn't have a team that sticks out. Pcc might be the best of the bunch. They are young and got blown out in week 0 by St eds. I think when pcc plays NA that'll decide the best of the wpial. District 1 has been down for some time now. I thought north Penn had a chance this year but they lost their opener to la salle. Speaking of La salle they just got whooped by mcdevitt so I thought Harrisburg would be the team to beat but they lost last week to Manheim. IMO other then St Joe's prep here's the best teams in the state: Erie prep, aliquippa, McKeesport, Imhotep, gateway, central valley, and bishop mcdevitt. All of which aren't 6A schools. Is their a team in pa that can complete with sjp because it's not looking like it thus far.

what public schools are the best jobs in the state?

lets say you are a top of the line coach and you can be the head coach at any public school

what school would you choose and why would you choose it?

in the WPIAL I would think North Allegheny would be a good choice as they have always been a top team and they have the financial resources along with out of state transfers often choosing the district for various reasons, and they are the largest school in the WPIAL

but maybe the entitled parents in that school would be a pain in the ass so maybe it wouldn't be the best choice for a coach, maybe the school board would be a pain too?

what school would you choose and why?

PIAA State Duals

Today opens state duals in 2A and 3A. I won't follow the 2A tournament particularly closely (Faith Christian will win in a rout) but the 3A has more intrigue than has existed in years. This is the most parity at the top of the big school classification that I have seen in years. There are legitimately seven teams that could win a state championship on Saturday if everything breaks right. Today, with one exception, is probably going to be chalk outcomes, tomorrow's quarterfinal round is total fireworks.

The top half of the bracket is loaded. Council Rock South wrestles Franklin Regional today and should beat them handily. CRS comes in ranked as the #1 team in the state by PaPower, and despite the ineligibility of state #1 Anthony Mutarelli (127), they are still loaded. Connor Lenehan (114), Luke Reitter (121, probably wrestling up at 127), Pat Woloshyn (127/133), Gavin Cole (160), and Bekruz Saddridinov (172) are all projected state medalists, with Saddridinov (a Lehigh commit) the top ranked wrestler in Pennsylvania at his weight.

CRS will face the winner of Central Mountain and Boiling Springs. Central Mountain is ranked #2 in the state, so the looming quarterfinal is massive. Central Mountain is probably the most star studded lineup in the field, with two former state champs in Dalton Perry (139/145) and Luke Simcox (139/145/152). Simcox has been hurt for a lot of the year and has wrestled at wildly fluctuating weights since his return, so where he slots in has a lot of intrigue. They also have wrestlers ranked near the top of the state in Griffin Walizer (#4 at 152) and Rocco Serafini (#7 at 215), so bonus points will be there ticket to keep moving on.

Selinsgrove and Trinity should be a win for the District 7 champs. The teams are weird match ups, with Selinsgrove really good from 189 and up and Trinity having their strength in the middle and lower parts of their lineups. Lots of falls here.

Last match on top is Bethlehem Catholic and Central Dauphin. Certainly a premier match up of blue bloods and the Hawks are looking to match Central Dauphin's run of four straight state championships, which the Rams did from 2008-2011. Bethlehem Catholic should win comfortably, but keep an eye out for a possible match up of state champ Kollin Rath (Missouri commit) and two-time state state finalist Ryan Garvick (Indiana commit) at 160.

The lower half feels wide open once quarters hit, but should be kind of chalk today. Gettysburg and LaSalle meet at the top and the Warriors really don't have a star, but they are one of the most balanced lineups in the tournament and should be able to overwhelm the D12 champ.

West Scranton takes on Easton in a preview of a lot of Northeast Regional match ups come individual time. West Scranton actually has more stars than the Red Rovers, with Michael Turi (145) a possible state finalist and Connor Lagier (#6 at 107) and Tyson Cook (#7 at 127) setting up for really good match ups with Easton lineup anchors Noah Fenner (#5 at 107) and Chris Kelly (#9 at 127). But one through thirteen, Easton is too deep.

In other years, Erie Cathedral Prep and Pennridge would be a big match up, but the Ramblers are not a power team this year and Pennridge is a very strong lineup after getting alot of guys healthy. Colby Martinelli (#2 at 114) is the headliner, but Cole Coffin (#6 at 121), Quinn McBride (#8 at 127), Sam Kuhns (#10 at 152), and Talan Hogan (#10 at 172) are all hammers in their own right. The Rams are a sneaky pick to make finals.

Biggest toss up match of the day is Connellsville and Wilson West Lawn in the bottom of the bracket. Again, the winner here could make a run all the way to finals. Connellsville is tough through the middle with the Vielma brothers (Kai is #7 at 133 and Lonny is #6 at 160) and Evan Petrovich (#4 at 145). West Lawn counters with four real hammers in McKaden Speece (#6 at 127), James Garcia (#6 at 133), Blaise Eidle (#7 at 172) and Ryan McMillan (#7 at 215). Vielma-Garcia may be a toss up that decides the dual if it happens.

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Being a multi-sport athlete I have to plan my lifting workouts, running workouts, and my other sports that I am playing which doesn't give me much free time but I wouldn't have it any other way.”

Q&A with Pennridge quarterback Noah Keating
