What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“I’m happy with what I accomplished this year but there’s definitely so many areas where I can improve so I’m just excited to continue to get better next year.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Being a multi-sport athlete I have to plan my lifting workouts, running workouts, and my other sports that I am playing which doesn't give me much free time but I wouldn't have it any other way.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?

Wrestling - District 11 Duals

One of my favorite events of the year, District 11 Duals, takes place this weekend at Freedom High School in Bethlehem. Although it doesn't quite have the stakes of the early 2000s, where just one team from D11 qualified for the state tournament (now it's both finalists) it still is an exceptionally competitive field with more state level teams than there are slots in the field at Hershey. District 11 started their duals championship in 1992, but the state did not begin a State Duals championship until 1999 (with D11 champ Northampton famously boycotting the first state tournament by sending their JV team due to it's proximity to the D11 individual tournament). Since the tournament started, the D11 champion has gone on to win the state title 12 times in 24 years, with the runner-up also posting a win in 2007. Since they started letting two D11 teams into the tournament, the finals has been an all D11 affair five times, including the last two seasons and three of the last four. Four different D11 teams have won a state title (Easton, Nazareth, Northampton, Bethlehem Catholic) and five have made finals (Parkland joins the list).

This year will be the first in nearly a decade where Bethlehem Catholic is not the top seed. Easton went undefeated against Pennsylvania teams, including wins over Becahi and Nazareth, to claim the top seed in the tournament. They'll have a first round match up with Liberty, then a semifinal with the Northampton/Whitehall winner. The Rovers defeated Northampton last weekend rather comfortably, and would be similarly favored against Whitehall, and are solid favorites to punch a Hershey ticket in semis.

The other side of the bracket is where the intrigue is, and sets up for another classic in the Becahi/Nazareth rivalry. Bethlehem Catholic, the two seed, will get some tough individual match ups against Pottsville, but should overwhelm on the team score. Nazareth gets upstart Pocono Mountain East in the quarters, which should be a comfortable win. That pits Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth in the other semi in a "winner goes to states, loser goes home" match. They've met in the D11 tournament five times since Becahi moved up to 3A, but all were in finals with both teams assured to move on to the state bracket. We'll break that matchup down in a little more depth after team capsules.

Wrestling: Phillipsburg 27 Easton 27, P’Burg wins on criteria.

I can’t believe that just f’n happened…

Easton loses their fifth straight to P’Burg, 27-27 with the Stateliners winning on the second criteria - most pins, 2-1. Both teams tied on the first tie breaking criteria with 7 wins a piece in the match.

Since the match was wrestled in New Jersey, they used NJ weights, so there were 14 bouts instead of 13, and Easton had to use a JV wrestler on varsity for the evening. Incredible match, despite the final result. Easton won massive toss ups at 157 and 165 to feel pretty good going into the back stretch. But at 190, Easton had a 6-1 lead and got cement mixed to their back to tie the match 6-6. Easton got a takedown to go up 8-7, but then was reversed and ridden out to lose 9-8. Won a big toss up at 215 to take a 23-21 lead in the match. P’Burg got an expected pin at 285, but despite being heavily favored at 106, Easton could not match the fall and only won 14-4, which left the match tied at 27 with P’Burg holding the tie breaking criteria.

From the left coast: CA legislature considers banning tackle/contact football for age 12 and under

They say it's just too dangerous with claims that up to 30% of boys who played midget and weight-football have suffered concussions.

When I started playing tackle ball for Queen of The Universe (in third grade in 1962 or something) and then with the Penndel Wildcats (before Carl Sandburg junior high and then Neshaminy) so did all or most of my friends.

I am unaware that any of them have suffered from concussions or dementia or whatever - at last so far (with the average age of my friends around 70). People have had other health issues but not those as have come to be associated with repeated head trauma.

I guess it will be intramural flag football through high school soon enough and somehow the girls will dominate (owing to societal views/laws/whatever) and so it won't be long before we'll be watching an all female college landscape and NFL (if we're watching -- maybe just female soccer at the pro level which I find hilariously uninteresting as a solid boys high school squad can run them into the ground).

Way to go, California!

Wrestling: #4 Easton - 30 #1 Bethlehem Catholic 26 - WE’RE BACK

#4 Easton (10-0; third at Top Hat, third at Bethlehem Hurricane Classic) at #1 Bethlehem Catholic (5th at Beast of the East, 24th at Ironman)

One of the premier dual meets remaining in the regular season takes place Wednesday night when Easton travels to Bethlehem Catholic to take on the top ranked team in the state. Easton is in the midst of a resurgent year under fourth year head coach Jody Karam, who has nearly built back the program from the tumult and turmoil since Steve Powell’s retirement in 2016. In his first team meeting after getting hired, he told the freshmen that they would be (reigning state champ) Nazareth by the time they were seniors – they took care of that in a big way with a 39-19 win in December. They’ll have their crack at Bethlehem Catholic tonight, which is the second major checkpoint on their way back to the program’s heights. After last sesaon’s dual, Karam said to the Express-Times, “We knew we weren’t going to beat that team tonight. But we are going to beat that team, and we’re going to beat that team soon.” Here’s their shot.

Bethlehem Catholic is the two-time defending state duals champion and has won 35 straight dual meets, though that figure is misleading since they entered their JV team in the abbreviated 2021 state duals during the COVID season, with their starters they’ve won 40 straight since a State Duals semifinal loss to Waynesburg in 2020. Since moving up to 3A in 2015, Bethlehem Catholic has won five state dual titles, and have ten titles since the program’s resurgence in 2009. Their only teams to beat them in duals since moving up are Nazareth, Waynesburg, Franklin Regional, Wyoming Seminary, Blair Academy, Malvern Prep, Lake Highland Prep (FL), and Liberty (coached by current Easton head coach Jody Karam). The Red Rovers last beat the Golden Hawks in 2011.

Wednesday’s dual is expected to be decided by a razor thin margin. Make no mistake, this is a very good Bethlehem Catholic team (5th at Beast of the East tells us that). Despite two of the nation’s best wrestlers in Kollin Rath and Keanu Dillard, they are not as deep as previous iterations of the Golden Hawks. The retirement of longtime head coach Jeff Karam and a controversial (at least in some Becahi circles) hire of Mike Cole as the new head coach caused a wave of transfer – the Hawks lost current nationally ranked wrestlers Nate Desmond (2x state champ) and Jake Dailey (2x state medalist) to Wyoming Seminary and state qualifier Auggie Warke back to Schuylkill Haven. Their freshman and sophomore classes are also unusually light – Keanu Dillard is the only sophomore on the roster and his brother Reef is the lone “high impact” freshman who came in this season. They’re still really good – their junior class, even without Desmond, is excellent and provides a backbone that can compete with anybody in the state. But this is not the Godzilla team like you saw last season, where they set a scoring record at states with three champs and seven medals amongst their 10 qualifiers.

Easton is now in year four with Jody Karam (Jeff’s brother), the hall of famer and longtime boss at Liberty, and are starting to show the hallmarks of a Jody Karam program. Jody is as good as anybody at turning an average kid into a good kid, and you see that reflected in the quality of depth Easton has in its lineup. Kids like Quentin Hammerstone, James Geiger, and Shae Linegar, have gone from .500ish wrestlers to legitimate threats to qualify for individual states. And, this might be the first year in a decade where an athlete from the Easton feeder programs isn’t a state medalist at Bethlehem Catholic, Notre Dame, or both. Easton’s ability to hang on to lower weights Nick Salamone and Noah Fenner, both of whom were long tied to the Catholic school powers in the Valley, shows the potential Karam’s program can have if they hang onto their best kids - and with a wave coming in the junior high program right now, we may see that potential very soon. One of the criticisms of Jody at Liberty was the lack of elite kids, he only had one state champ in 20 years, but Liberty also has never had the resources and feeders that Easton does, so he hasn’t had the same access to talent that he does now. Fenner certainly looks the part of a star through his first month of varsity competition, and that will be the trend to watch is Easton is going to get back to being nationally ranked. But a win over Bethlehem Catholic would be a big start.
