Liacouris: 5A Hoops semiifinal

Just back from the 5A games where Bishop Shanahan beat Chester 61-47 and Penncrest held off Wissahickon 45-40.

Charter schools must be affecting Chester as that is not the team I saw a few years ago, not to take anything from BS. Game was actually back and forth-close til a late 4th qtr run. Eagles have two big dudes and a small guard (#22) who can get it up court, penetrate and score as well as shoot from beyond. Solid team. Did not see Chester’s famed press til too late in game while Shanahan had no trouble breaking limited pressure and running with them.

Penncrest came out like they were going to blow Wiss away who seemed to foul every other possession putting Lions in bonus, they couldn’t take advantage of, missing front ends. Lions started pulling away late 3rd early 4th getting inside. But Wiss kept at them, made a few threes in between at least 3 straight air ball in 4th of a sloppy game where Penncrest went ice cold a few times. 43-40 possession Wiss with a few seconds to go, missed a 3, out on Penncrest then poorly managed final few seconds not getting shot off, losing it out of bounds with 2 seconds to go and Penncrest’s ball. Not the best write up but always a treat getting to the Liacouris Center.

District 1 Openings

With the recent news, that leaves Tennent, CB West, and Pennridge with head coaching vacancies. It should be interesting to see who ends up taking over at these programs. They all have their advantages and disadvantages, some more so than others.

Anyone have intel on early favorites? It's always weird to me now that West isn't a "premiere" job in the state. After watching them dominate for so long, it's tough to wrap my head around them not attracting top talent. I do get why that isn't the case anymore, it's just different to see. Like my wife tells me, it isnt the 80s anymore!

Just another Tuesday in Trumpville

Jared who has been seeing some of the most important secrets of the country with interim clearance, has now been stripped of it because he can pass clearance. Remember when Trump shouted on and on about Hillary and clearance. LOL

In the witch hunt, Gates gets charges dropped because he's flipped. Usually witch hunts don't have so many people pleading guilty or flipping. Ya know?

2 weeks after 17 people gun down, Trump is already backing down from the NRA.

Not to be overshadowed, it's now being reported that seven states election database were compromised prior to the 2016 election. Remember how Trump cried for weeks before the election that it was rigged? Remember how Trump asked Russia to hack HRC's emails?

Remember that Mexican judge who couldn't be fair to Trump because he was Mexican? Or his parents were from Mexico and he was born here, but close enough. Well he just ruled in favor of Trump's wall.

Q&A with Mt. Lebanon safety Michael Palmer

How did the football season go for your team?
“I believe our team had a strong season. We finished 6-5 and one win away from winning our section. We had a couple wins against some quality opponents and showed that we could compete in 6A. Sadly, we had some injuries and lost a couple crucial games towards the end of the season that hurt us. Overall, I think it was a positive year.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?
“My workout plans going forward consist of lifting and improving my speed. I will be lifting every day before school and a couple days a week at Outer Limits. I will also be running track to try and improve my speed and quickness.”

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“I’m trying to improve my speed and strength. I need to be able to run with the fastest guys on the field as well as make a big hit on one of the biggest kids on the field for our team to succeed. I also want to improve my personal leadership for our team, because we lost a lot of quality leadership.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I believe we can compete with anyone. Our young guys need to commit to improving themselves all spring and summer. Then our returning players need to lead the young guys and put them in positions to succeed.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“That’s hard to say right now because we have an entire spring and summer until the season starts. But we have a state finalist and state championship from last year on our schedule in Gateway and Pine Richland. Playing these teams will allow us to see where we stand because if we can compete with the best, then we have a shot at making a run this year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

Q&A with Woodland Hills defensive back Mike Coleman

How did the football season go for your team?
“Our football season was all about playing with heart. We had a lot of people were saying we weren’t going to make it to the playoffs and we accomplished that but didn’t finish strong.”

What are your workout plans now going forward?

What are you trying to improve on the most this off-season?
“I am trying to improve focusing on what I have to do to maintain good grades and have a consistent workout mindset.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I believe my team will have an undefeated season. We have some starters coming back like Anthony Bullock at running back, Jayden Lucas at strong safety, Kris Jones fullback, and a couple more.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“Our toughest game is going to be against Bethel Park since they run the ball a lot. It’s going to be a defensive game, but we’ll be ready this year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“In college, I would love to continue my career playing football since my goal is to go All-Pro. For track, I’m deeply thinking about it depending on if I get a scholarship for track this or next season. Even though it’s going to be my first year doing track, I think I can get it done because of my ability to have long strides, being able to jump, and to be fast.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Virginia Tech, West Virginia, the University of Florida, Indiana, Boston College, Cincinnati, Penn State, Syracuse, Toledo, Ohio, Miami of Ohio, Pitt, Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Kent State, Memphis, Tennessee, Buffalo, Temple, and Maryland.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“As of right now, the University of Toledo is recruiting me the hardest. I have visited twice in the past month. Coach Ross, the safeties coach, came to the high school three times since they have offered me. Coach Candle came once so they’ve been on me hard checking my grades and seeing how I’ve been doing.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“This year, I’ve been to three different colleges. Toledo was first, then Miami of Ohio, and lastly Temple.”

What camps are you going to this summer?
“The college camps I have for this off-season depend on how I can get there and when. I’m not making promises about attending a camp or not for transportation reasons.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college football team growing up was the University of Florida. I’ve always liked their team and their culture background. They have always been a winning team, too. They might not make it as far as they want but they get the job done.”
