John Petercuskie, Neshaminy's head coach from 1960 to 1965, co-head coach in 1958 and 1959 and then assistant to Harry Franks from 1954 to 1957, passed yesterday. He was loved by his boys back then and right on through to the present as the guys on his teams have stayed very close with each other and coach too.

'Cuskie was part of that crew of great men who were from the "Coal region" of PA (he was from Old Forge) that managed to find their way to Neshaminy during the 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s (including Franks, Johnny Swartz and Pete Cordelli to name a few). With each of them a football man to the core that group (and others) were instrumental in reshaping the 'Skins from their original "smaller school" status of the '30s and '40s to that of a dominant large school force in Eastern PA and beyond by the time they had finished their work.

During his tenure as an assistant (1954 to 1957) Neshaminy was 33-6-1 and while 'Cuskie was a co-head coach (1958 and 1959) the 'Skins posted an 18-2-1 record. From 1960 through 1965, as the sole head honcho, 'Cuskie's teams were 59-1-5 (the only loss was to Easton, 13-7, with the Dawgs pulling off a Hail Mary pass with just minutes remaining in the fourth quarter of that 1961 game).

Neshaminy's record during the 1954 through 1965 years 'Cuskie was coaching there was 110-9-7 (and during the last 51 games he coached following the Easton loss his teams went 47-0-4 and created "The Streak").

And taking on everybody they could find the 'Skins played teams like Easton, both Allentown schools, Liberty, Central Dauphin, Muhlenberg, Eddystone, Altoona, Johnson City, NY, Ambler (when they were tearing up the BuxMont), La Salle (when it was pushing the PCL around), Bishop Egan (which by the mid-60s was a PCL topper), Pleasantville and Delaware Township, NJ (both of them NJ mid-state powers back then) along with the locals like Pennridge, Pennsbury, Woodrow Wilson (when it was making noise), etc.

He stayed a fan of the Redskins to the end and the community was his biggest fan too. He'll be missed by the entire Neshaminy family.

“I had two favorite colleges growing up. I’m originally from West Virginia, so I grew up as a WVU fan. But from a personal standpoint, I never wanted to attend that school, I was simply just an athletics fan. Since about seventh grade, I became obsessed with Harvard and the Ivy League. I wanted to make it one of my goals to make it to a school like that, and now thanks to my development at Central Catholic as a player and a student, that goal is now much closer.”

What have you been doing as of late with your workouts?
“I’ve been taking a SAT prep course, so that cuts in my time in the weight room. I still try to get lifts in during the weekend to make it up. I am working on raising my bench, squat, deadlift, and clean.”

“Probably my technique, craft of the game, and learning my position more and more everyday through my father, coaches, and mentors around me.”

What are your areas of focus going forward?
“Just getting my stamina up because I play offense, defense, and mostly every snap. I didn’t play football last year, so it was difficult before.”

“I think we will do great. We have to have that mindset coming into a new year. I like our team and our new coach has another year with us. Last year, we were behind because our coach didn’t come until like June, so we didn’t have real official workouts under the program. Also, we have a lot of young, talented players that can do damage.”

“I’m not worried about any other team, I’m worried about my team and myself. My mindset is the same every game.”

“Since the end of my junior season, I started kicking off of the ground to prepare for college. That was tough at the beginning, but I learned quickly and have got my distance back and am consistent.”

“Leg strength and flexibility. Being stronger and more flexible helps with being more natural when kicking. Most people also don’t understand how key flexibility is when it comes to kicking and punting.”

What have you been doing as of late with your workouts?
“We’ve been doing a lot both physically and mentally every day during our workouts. Not only are we on a strict lifting schedule, but we are also studying plays and techniques to get prepared for this summer and the upcoming season.”

What do you feel you have improved on the most since football ended?
“I think I’ve definitely improved the most on my strength. In the past three months, my bench has gone up by 35 pounds, squat by 20 pounds, and clean by 55 pounds.”

What are your areas of focus going forward?
“This summer, I really want to focus on my endurance and overall fitness. I want to cut fat and gain speed and muscle that will take me to where I want to be.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I think our team will be great this year. We have ten returning starters and a lot of younger guys willing to step up and do big things this season. One thing I think that sets us apart from other teams is the brotherhood on our team. This winter, we’ve all come together and created a family of players and coaches. I think that will give us a huge advantage this fall.”

“Pass protection. I have been working to perfect my craft in pass pro. I struggled a little with any inside moves, but this year, I feel like it won't be a problem. With that being said, I feel like I will be a more well-rounded lineman this year by being able to dominate in the passing game as well as the run game.”

“I have been focused on recruiting for the past three to months.”

“I’ve just been trying to get bigger and work on my speed and footwork with the program that our strength and conditioning coach makes up.”

“My footwork and strength improved tremendously throughout this off-season.”

“My pass sets, speed, and getting bigger are my focus right now and moving forward.”

Some of the local teams 2018 grid schedules are set and available with Langhorne’s one of them. And in what should be plenty of fun the ‘Skns host the Knights in the season opener for both.

Following North Penn Neshaminy then hits the road for Perkasie and Pennridge before rounding out its N-L match-ups with another road trip that sees the ‘Skins visiting D-Town West.

And I wasn’t able to locate the rest of North Penn’s non-league schedule but a few of its Conference games are in place.

What have you been doing as of late with your workouts?
“Being my season ended early do to a broken collar bone, I've really been focusing on weight training to get stronger overall. Also, agility and speed training.”

What do you feel you have improved on the most since football ended?
“I feel I have definitely gotten stronger from my weight training and I am also improving my route running, catching ability and just being able to get open and create space by playing 7-on-7 with PA Nike Elite. There is video on my Twitter account.”

What are your areas of focus going forward?
“To continue getting stronger and faster. I'm also working hard in the batting cages to become an elite hitter as a baseball player.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I think we can get back to the WPIAL playoffs in 2018. We have some talented freshmen that can hopefully step right in the lineup. Also, Amen Cottrill is back this season after transferring. I'm healthy and excited to finish strong.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“As always, our toughest opponent will be Aliquippa, but I expect our conference as a whole to be tough.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I definitely want to play sports in college. I'm not certain which sport that will be yet. I believe I can play both football and baseball at the collegiate level. I love both sports. It depends on which sport I will have the opportunity to play at the highest level.”

“No colleges have been recruiting yet. I'm reaching out to several right now though, so hopefully that will change very soon.”

“Yes, I made an unofficial visit to Robert Morris University.”
