Top 20: The East AAAA (11-20)

11. Coatesville 4-2. Big time plummet going on here with Coatesville beginning the season ranked 3rd and now in the tailspin of a two game losing streak. 3rd was obviously too high, predicated on the skills of their outstanding quarterback Jordan Young and Coach Matt Ortega despite huge grad losses. One thing for certain with Downingtown East coming in Friday, Coatesville has seen their share of passing attacks the last two games, losing to Downingtown West and West Chester East. And there’s the rub. Coach Ortega has not lost three in a row since the heady days at York High in 2006 where the Bearcats went 5-6 before back-to-back 10-2 seasons. On paper, East is the better team, but that’s not where they play this game. Don’t be surprised to see a fiercely competitive and aggressive game (track meet?) as Coatesville fights desperately to stay relevant in the Ches Mont National and postseason picture.
12. Quakertown 6-0. The Panthers stayed in the hunt for the SOL-Continental title and another high seed in the postseason trouncing Truman 42-0 for their second shutout of the season. They’re going for their second straight conference title (good having North Penn and Pennridge out of the way!) with an explosive veteran offense led by quarterback Tom Garlick (6-4, 185, sr) and senior running backs Rob Burns (5-10, 185, 964ry) and Nick Bonomo ((5-11, 175, 215ry). The receivers are good targets with wide out Tom Baskin at 6-4, 215 (19/382) and TE Aaron Besch at 6-2, 210. Fast reminder on QB Garlick who backed up Alec Vera last year after transferring in from Archbishop Wood. There he helped lead Wood to a AAA title in 2013 (13-2), defeating Harrisburg’s Bishop McDevitt (14-2) 22-10. He took over as the starting quarterback the year before as a frosh in the third week stepping in for Chris Rahill. That group went to the final as well, losing to a super Cathedral Prep (15-0) team 24-14 so we are talking about one playoff experienced quarterback that should pay dividends in the postseason. 2-4 CB West is next on the road.
13. Freedom 6-0. Bethlehem Freedom has been the pick all along to give Parkland a run for the money with Easton graduating the world and Whitehall looking the same. But few expected them to come out the gate this strong, especially with the loss to injury of running back Roberto Diaz and an offensive line needing replaced. But here they are with a skillful quarterback in Joe Young, fine receivers and an underrated coaching staff. And the new line is obviously getting it done. They got off to a hot start last year at 7-0 but lost quarterback Young to injury, finishing 2-3. But it was still a notable turnaround from the depths of a 2-8 season in 2013 to 9-3 last year. After beating Dieruff last week 39-0, they’re home to Whitehall (2-4) who should be feeling the effects of Liberty, Parkland and Easton on consecutive weekends while being outscored 129-35.
14. Perkiomen Valley 6-0. The Vikings turned things around the last three years rolling out 8-3, 10-3 and 9-2 records (17-16 the previous three) while becoming relevant not only in the PAC but also in the district postseason. Here they advanced to the semifinals against North Penn in 2013, losing 40-19 after beating Rustin 26-6 and CB West 60-20. Then last season saw them lose at Downingtown East in the first round, 27-24 on a 25-yd field goal as time expired. No one is calling this the SOL-National or Northern-8 but weak it’s not. The tandem of Perk Val and Spring Ford are legitimate teams as some have learned the hard way while Pottsgrove’s history is well documented. The Vikings battered outmanned Triple-A Pope John Paul II (0-6) 56-8 last week and will likely do the same to a disappointing Boyertown group (3-4) that has lost to all the quality teams on their schedule, Exeter (6-0) 45-7, AAA-Pottstown (5-1) 28-14 and Spring Ford (7-0) 39-6.
15, Spring Ford 6-0. Like Perkiomen Valley above, the Rams hail from the PAC-10 where they too have proven themselves with wins against Whitehall (2011, regular season), Ridley (12), Pennridge (12) and Downingtown West (13)….since Coach Chad Brubaker’s arrival in 2010. This year began with a 28-25 win against State College (3-3). So again, woe to anyone taking these two PAC-10 titans lightly. After setting numerous records last year scoring 41ppg, this year’s group is averaging 47 with a new quarterback. Senior Rick Venuto (6-0, 190, son Villanova O/C) is lighting things up, completing 63 of 92 passes for 1058 yards. That’s a 68% completion rate with 18 touchdowns and no interceptions. The offense returned all their running backs plus experienced receivers. The defense that returned eight starters is holding teams to a 10ppg average. They were wicked against Pottgrove last week holding them to 144 yards rushing in a 22-13 win. Owen J. Roberts (3-3) is next at Pottstown.
16. Council Rock South 4-2. Guess who’s tied atop the SOL-Continental with Quakertown at 3-0? That’s also the number of wins they cranked out since losing at home to Neshaminy four weeks ago. Last week saw them reach the half century mark for the second time beating CB West 50-15. Two weeks earlier they beat Truman by the same score. Looks like last year’s young bunch grew up! They only had ten seniors on the roster last year allowing them to return big numbers including senior quarterback Sean Stackhouse and their talented halfback Brendan Patterson, also a senior. Almost all the line returned plus Tight End Todd Murray allowing their option offense to roll at 34ppg. The defense is improved significantly over last year’s season ending 27ppg to this year’s 18! With 3-3 Tennett coming up this week in Warminster, we’re a week closer to the showdown October 23rd on the Hawk’s home turf to Quakertown.
17. Wyoming Valley West 6-0. Valley West is having one of those season’s where they’re just making everyone look silly. They are kicking ass and taking names, winning by an average score of 46-10. The catch to this is the opposition was all AAA teams except one, with a combined won-loss of 16-22. Flipping that, they really….really, pass the eye test, in every way with an outstanding quarterback in Aaron Austin (66/94, 70%! 984yds, 14/3 Td-Pick), excellent veteran running backs and a talented receiver corps. The line is big, make that huge making this appear like a team that could finally take the next step in the postseason by advancing beyond the 1st round. They beat 2-4, AAA-Dallas last week 56-0 and are at 2-4, AAA-Crestwood this week with nothing on the schedule that looks like a threat thereon.
18. Pennridge 4-2. Pennridge kept themselves in the SOL-National picture at 2-1 by defeating Abington last week 38-15, remaining a game behind Pennbury and North Penn who are 3-0. Nice bounce back by the Rams winning their last two games on the road after losing to North Penn three weeks ago. The win positions them to better control their destiny with Pennsbury in Friday. Because the Rams are predictable with a strong running game, they are playing into Pennsbury’s defensive strength, its front seven. But if the Falcons can’t establish the passing game, it will be a slugfest and low scoring affair. Last year’s 41-14 embarrassment to the Falcon adds a little extra to this one.
19. Central Bucks East 4-2. The Patriots are one of the toughest outs in the Continental with five and six point losses to CR North and CR South respectively and the road win in overtime at Pennridge. They are significantly improved over last year’s 5-5 team that was the closest they’ve been to a winning season since 2007! Last year’s team had a pedestrian offense averaging 21ppg with a defense that allowed 24. This year’s offense averages 31ppg with a defense allowing 19. If they can prevent a defensive lapse like the one against CR North three weeks ago at home, losing 26-21, they can potentially go 7-3 by winning their next three games. Coming off a 28-3 win against Tennett, they’re looking good with Norristown, Truman and CB West on the schedule followed by the regular season finale at Quakertown.
20. Neshaminy 4-2. Plymouth Whitemarsh and Nazareth couldn’t hang, suffering 21-pt losses last week so look whose back! With two losses, the Skins are hanging on to their playoff hopes by a threat but weirder things have happened. The schedule shows Souderton and Bensalem up next at home followed by road games against North Penn and Pennsbury to make that prospect seem remote. Buy hey, few expected last year’s 4-6 team to hang with North Penn losing 17-13 or to hold Pennsbury’s wildly talented team to a 3-3 tie at the half and 10-7 deficit at the end of 3 before losing 17-3, without D’Andre Pollard. Wins against Souderton and Bensalem will give them good momentum entering the stretch especially after a confidence building 21-14 road win at Central Bucks South so who knows?

Looking for Rover Insights on LVL

Rover, I had promised a young man who plays both ways for Nazareth that I would get out one of these fine days to see he and his team play.

Unfortunately, I chose the ACC - Naz game since it was afternoon and LS was that evening. I had to leave as ACC made it 49-13. The game was at the end of the third and was pushing 4 hours at that point. The Naz kids played hard and it killed me to watch RM smirking on the ACC sideline.

My question, with all that has gone on in the LVL, is the league that wide open or is the quality of play diminished? I really thought Naz would push ACC based on all that has gone on; man, was I wrong!

Thoughts?

WPIAL AAAA Top 8 - Week 6

1. Woodland Hills: After a slow start, handled USC with ease. Need to get Miles back to pair with Shaw, as well as improve their passing game a little.

2. Penn-Trafford: With Plum's true colors showing in loss to Kiski, PT is essentially assured of its second undefeated season in a row. Likely won't be tested until 2nd round of playoffs.

3. Pine-Richland: Big game this week with an interesting Seneca Valley team who have a very good QB and play solid defense. I expect PR to win, but in a high scoring affair.

4. North Allegheny: Like Penn-Trafford, competition has essentially ended until the playoffs. The do have a season-ending rivalry game versus North Hills, but that looks to be a mercy rule affair judging from North Hill's showing versus PR last week.

5. Pittsburgh Central Catholic: Still have best talent in WPIAL, but need to get some kids healthy. Two-way monster C.J. Thorpe was out last game with injury. Still looking to find identity on offense, and consistent effort on defense.

6. Bethel Park: They have exploded offensively the past 2 weeks and look to continue that this week versus Lebo. I think they will, with a 21+ point victory.

7. McKeesport: Well, with Plum losing to Kiski last week, looks like smooth sailing to the playoffs. Hudson is a start, but not sure how far they can go being so one dimensional.

8. Lebo: While they are 5-0, I'm still not sold. They need a good showing versus Bethel Park to be considered a contender, but with only games left versus Woody and down USC and North Hills clubs, a 7-2 record with a possible home playoff game is in reach.

Others receiving votes:

- Seneca Valley: Only wins are against winless Fox Chapel and Butler, and North Hills (who have also only beat Butler and Fox Chapel). Bad loss to Norwin, but played very tough in opener vs. NA. Game this week against PR will determine if they have a chance at a home playoff game, or will end up on the road.

- Plum: Hard to recover after losing to Kiski. Not sure what this team is about. They need huge performances against PT and McKeesport.

- Kisk: Go figure - could conceivably get a home playoff game for finishing third in their conference.

The unofficial playoff point standings after week 6 (based on records)

Here are the top 16 based on records and the estimated point standings. Debate away
1. DTW 6-0 On a collision course with DTE at the end of the season. The winner will be the one seed! They play West Chester East this week and will Roll!
2. DTE 6-0 See above......Play Coatesville this Friday and will win
3. Upper Dublin 6-0 This team is the real deal. They we be ignored because they aren't a "traditional" power but this team is balanced and loaded on each side of the ball. PW this week who lost to an Upper Moreland team that lost to horrible Hatboro team.............Upper Dublin will roll! My only concern is how they will react when a team actually fights back and doesnt just roll over for them.
4. Quakertown 6-0 This team gets slammed for playing a "weak non league schedule" but they take care of business every week. They play CB West this week who looked very very very very slow in the games Ive seen them play. Quakertown town in a closer then most people think game.
5. Springford 6-0 On a Roll.......will go into their last game undefeated against PV. In what I am going to call the "Pretender Bowl" as I feel that both Springford and Perk Valley are the beneficiaries of a super weak Schedule
6. Perk Valley 6-0 See Above
1 loss teams
7. Pennsbury- 5-1 I think they are the best of the one loss teams and probably better then Springford and Perk Valley. This week they will take on the Rams from Pennridge on Friday.....this is my game of the week. I think Pennsburys Def front is as fast as they are strong. The Rams oline slow and play very high. Pennsbury is a Wing T team so they have seen the Middle school offense over and over again and the coaches know how to defend it. The major advantage for Pennsbury is at the Skill positions. They have em all over and I feel outside of Cuthbert they are below average. Close at half but Snyder out coaches Hollenbach and Pennsbury speed is too much for the heavy footed rams
8. Haverford 5-1 Beat a tough Garnet team and shocked the hell outta me! Will get to to 6-1 easily vs Penncrest
9. Upper Darby 5-1--Dont know enough about them to comment
10. PW 5-1 Will lose TWO yes TWO more along the way......will they get in with 4 loses?? I say no Pennridge will get in with 3 loses just ahead of them
11. NPENN- 4-2 Best of the 2 loss teams and one lose teams other then Pennsbury and that will be settled on the field. Will be up 40 on Bensalem at half. Will play Pennsbury in two weeks who will be off a physcial Pennridge game. Npenn will coast to 8-2 and a league title. Disaster strikes ? and they slip in at 7-3
12. Pennridge 4-2 Should be interesting this Friday.......I dont want to say anything bad about them as there seems to be a lot of "Hollenbach love" on this site.
13. Garnet 4-2 I was wrong................they get to 5-2 as they play a terrible 3a harriton
14. Cr South 4-2 This team has the potential to do some serious damage. They are big upfront and run the triple to perfection. M only concern is them on defense. They have been bad the past few years. They play a Tennent team that started out strong with a soft schedule but have been exposed in league play being outscored.............136-10. Cr South is up 5- at half.
15. CB East 4-2.............This team is all over the place. They turn the ball over a ton...........get a ton of penalties...........and are still 4-2. They play the fastest team in district 1!!!! Norristown has speed all over. If they can ever get their shit together look out. East wins in OT
16. Unionville....4-2 Play a tough 3a great valley team will win a close one.

Here we go Playoffs
1 DTW VS 16 UNIONVILLE DTW is too much.........their QB is something special and fun to watch
2 DTE VS 15 CB EAST........ DTE rolls
3 UPPER DUBLIN VS CR SOUTH........UD wins as theyve had expereince prepping for the option vs Truman
4. QUAKERTOWN VS GARNET..........QTOWN wins big
5. SPRINGFORD VS 12 PENNRIDGE.............RAMS ground and pound Springfields no huddle
6 PERK VALLEY VS 11 NPENN-------------Only mercy rule in round 1
7 PENNSBURY VS 10 PW---------------Check that 2nd mercy rule in round 1
8 HAVERFORD VS 9 UPPER DARBY Haverford..............coin flip

Reseeding
1 DTW VS 12 PENNRIDGE............... DTW.........
2 DTE VS NPENN.....................Rematch goes to Npenn
3 UD VS HAVERFORD...........UD Mercy rule
4 QUAKERTOWN VS PENNSBURY............Pennsbury

Reseeding
DTW VS NPENN...........Too many tough games in a row for the Knights DTW
UD VS Pennsbury..........UD Wins the rematch

DTW VS UD...........................................UD

D11/2/4 Big School Power Rankings

I was traveling and missed last week, but this week we have our first new #1. As we all know, Parkland lost to Liberty and the Hurricanes were able to highlight some real weaknesses in the Trojans. Suddenly, the D11/2/4 subregional looks wide open at the 4A classification. Wyoming Valley West has done nothing but dominate, and takes over the top spot. Freedom moves up to #2, as the Patriots have been the most consistently solid team in D11. Liberty’s big win puts them in the three spot, and the regular season finale at BASD may be for all the marbles if each Christmas City team continues to take care of business.

1. Wyoming Valley West (6-0)
Last Week; The Spartans crushed Dallas Area,56-0, solidifying their claim as the best team in D2. WVW scored four touchdowns of more than 50 yards, two by Sean Judge (53 yard reception and 70yard rush ) and one each by Aaron Austin (55 yard run) and Billy Davidson (52 yard catch). Judge finished with 125 yards on seven carries. Defensively, the Spartans held Dallas to 97 yards, and forced seven three and outs.

Playoff Musings: The Spartans currently sit in first place in the subregional standings, but have the second weakest schedule of any of the contenders (only Stroudsburg has less pontential power points). This means that while WVW is likely to run the table, they’ll need teams to cannibalize each other behind them to ensure the top seed.

This Week: Wyoming Valley West travels to Crestwood, who is having a disappointing year at 2-4. Nobody has offered up much resistance to the Spartans so far, and I’m not holding my breath that they’ll be challenged until playoff time.

2. Freedom (6-0)
Last Week: Freedom defeated Dieruff 39-0. I don’t have a box score available, but another sufficiently dominating win by the Patriots.

Playoff Musings: If Freedom wins out, they will be the top seed in the subregional playoff. They sit ten points ahead of WVW, but have huge power point potential left on their schedule with Parkland, Easton, and Liberty all remaining.

This Week: Freedom takes on Whitehall, who is ending a brutal three game stretch of Parkland-Easton-Freedom. The Zephyrs were able to really move the ball against Parkland, but could not get any offense going last week. The Freedom defense is the best in the area, and the 3-3-5 is built to stop spreads like Whitehall, so expect another long night for Gianni Sinatore and company.

3. Liberty (5-1)
Last Week: In the current leader for performance of the year, the Liberty Hurricanes raced out to a 41-13 lead over previous #1 Parkland before hanging on to win 41-34. Offensively, Liberty got a huge night again from Doug Erney, who is right in the thick of any EPC Player of the Year conversations. The four year starter completed 12 passes to eight different receivers for 206 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 86 yards. The Hurricane rushing attack pounded out 316 yards against a Parkland defense that had suffocated running backs in their first five games. And defensively, Liberty limited Parkland’s stars. Kenny Yeboah had just 2 catches for 21 yards. Devante Cross started the game 7 of 17 for 26 yards and two interceptions as Liberty built their big lead before the furious rally in the end, and only managed 48 yards on the ground. Jaohne Duggan sacked Cross twice and has been one of the most impressive defensive players in the Valley so far this year.

Playoff Musings: Liberty is in good shape to qualify for the subregional playoffs for the first time since 2009. The Hurricanes put themselves in great position last week, as they have the most valuable win in the subregional to date. They also are rooting for Bethlehem Catholic to finish 9-1 and rack up all available bonus from that win. They can’t catch WVW without the Spartans losing, but can pass everybody else by winning out.

This Week: Liberty gets a bit of a breather with Northampton. The Konkrete Kids gave Nazareth a scare two weeks ago, but have otherwise struggled mightily in conference play. Liberty should easily move to 6-1 to set up a final kick of Easton, ACC, and Freedom.

4. Parkland (5-1)
Last Week: Parkland’s loss to Liberty revealed some real question marks about the Trojans. Their running backs carried the ball ten times for 49 yards. The defense struggled against the first multi-pronged rushing attack they’ve seen this year. And while Devante Cross finished with 317 yards, it took 32 attempts and they had dug too big a hole to ultimately come back from. Still, they had the ball with a chance to win, and will likely rue the half-back pass that resulted in their only non-touchdown drive during their rally in the second half.

Playoff Musings: Parkland dropped from #2 to #7 in the subregional standings with their loss to Liberty. The Trojans still have to play Easton, Freedom, and Nazareth, who all offer big points but tough contests where they can’t afford to take multiple losses. There is a pretty clear delineation between the top 6 in D11 and the rest of the district, so I don’t think they’re in danger of missing the playoffs, but they could end up a 7 or 8 seed. Of course, last year they won the subregional from the #7 spot, so that probably isn’t fatal.

This Week: Parkland takes on Easton in the EPC Game of the Week.

5. Allentown Central Catholic (4-2)
Last Week: The Vikings crushed Nazareth, 48-27, thanks to a 28 point first quarter. Nazareth has struggled all year to stop the run, which was exploited by ACC and tailback Alvin Pacheco, who carried 21 times for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Pachecho also had 78 yards receiving and Darnell Ferrell added 91 yards on the ground. ACC limited Nazareth to 213 yards passing, most well after the mercy rule was in effect. The Vikings were particularly effective in limiting Julian Liaci after the catch. The speedster caught 10 passes, but managed just 55 yards receiving.

Playoff Musings: The 3A bracket is a mess in District 11. ACC sits in first place, and has a major advantage on the rest of the classification thanks to their 4A heavy schedule. Wins over Emmaus and Northampton are very attainable, but I think they’ll need to beat either Liberty or Bethlehem Catholic as well to secure their playoff berth. There are six teams in 3A that are either 6-0 or 5-1 and ACC is currently ahead of all of them in points, but more losses and those teams will catch up quickly.

This Week: ACC travels to Emmaus to see the Kyle Boney show. The Green Hornet tailback has over 1,100 yards on the year and has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise disappointing year for Emmaus.

laSalle/Wood

This should be a great game this Saturday night. IMO will be a close one and with a lot of action from both sides . Tough one to pick ,laSalle definitely battle tested ,Wood hasn't been challenged yet. The St joe Prep/ St.Joe Regional from North Jersey play in the afternoon . Both games I believe are scheduled at PW. I bet The OLD ALE House gets a lot of business Saturday before ,after and between games.

Hollenbach again proves he's elite coach

you have to give Coach Hollenbach of the Pennridge Rams a lot of credit as he's taken a young team and again molded them into a team on the rise. After seeing North Penn totally dismantle our boys, I was impressed w the Rams and how they beat a good Neshaminy team at their home field. With our top rb out, Desrosiers stepped up and along with QB Devon Balmer ran the ball very well against a stout Neshaminy defense. Our D on the other hand looked much better than last week and the line kept tons of pressure on the Neshaminy backfield. A guy to watch for the Rams is rising star Ryan Cuthbert, son of former Pennridge head coach and CB west great Randy Cuthbert. This kid made some great catches and runs !

Some big scores

Upper Moreland 35-14 Ply White: Any one whose seen PW probably thought the axe would fall next week not this so except for the margin it's not really a shocker 'tho a and BIG BIG win for AAA-UM,
WC East 31-30 Coats: Wow, saw this one and have rarely seen Raiders so porous on D. Qb JJ Roberts has been the real deal for a few now and is always fun to watch. East has some players!
Liberty 41-34 Park: Parkland defense ???? Lib's Qb is just fun to watch! Quite of a race in the EPC-S
Susquehanna Twp 35-26 McDevitt: City rivalry of Triple-A's tho McDevitt has moved to suburban Harrisburg. McD graduated a fine team but Hanna has the horses. Always do and something of an enigma why they aren't more of a consistent player. QB Ben Moser is a load. No D3 lock for McD this year!
Paramus Cath 19-16 Don Bosco: Paramus came into game 1-3 but losses were to Eastern Christian, Gilman and Bergen Cath.

** Any thoughts on WC East's win diminishing Dtown-W's win over Coatesville the week before and narrow vs Shanahan?

"We're leaving behind a sovereign, stable, and self-reliant Iraq, with a representative government

that was elected by its people. We are building a new partnership between our nations." Those words were uttered by obama on September 14, 2011.

Islamic State rose up in Syria and later invaded Iraq and now we have the migrants fleeing their countries and trying to get into Europe. Is there any doubt that there are severe repercussions when weak leaders like obama are in place?

How many times did we hear "mission accomplished" by Bush. That statement was stupid, no question, but this one by little barry obviously had much more severe consequences. Will the left-wing media ever wake up? Oh, they have an agenda? This was unquestionably one of the worst strategic moves in a long time.

What will be obama's legacy: 1) Leaving Iraq and Syria in a shambles; 2) the nuclear deal with Iran (remember Clinton's failed nuclear deal with North Korea, still haunting the landscape to this day, hardly mentioned in the media); or 3) obamacare. Either way, it isn't going to be pretty.

SJ Prep 28 - St. Joe's Regional (NJ) 5 Final (Tulla - Soothsayer)

Tulla called this a few weeks ago as he thought that the Prep would play SJR much tougher than Bosco given that it was a mid-season game.

The Jekyll and Hyde Hawks seem to be putting it all together. The defense played incredibly well keeping a very high-powered team out of the end zone and also had a couple real nice short situation stops.

Looks like they will be ready for La Salle.
