West Catholic-Haverford School

I followed this game through Huck's Twitter reports. Sounds like Kidd-Jackson had a great game for WC but that WC just ran out of gas as the game wore on--something that seems to have happened more than a few times in recent years. I don't imagine the heat was any help.

How does HS's team compare to last year's? I'm assuming it's their greater depth that made the difference against WC. Too bad the Burrs can't kick extra points or field goals.

Rumor Mill

Rumor has it… NP has two new students from a private school in Fort Washington that happen to play a fall sport – if this is true is a push for a district title is eminent – if this is true can they play this fall? what about starters who have worked all year? Will high maintenance dads take over the program? What would Abby lee do?

All these questions and more to follow on the next episode of football dads

FINAL: 'Skins 42 - Whippets 14

On the fourth play of the first series in the game Mason Jones hit junior Mike Garlick for a 74 yard score and the first 'Skins TD of the night. Then not long after they stitched together a nice drive for the second touchdown with Will Dogba taking it in.

Still in the first, D-Town's Riddick looked good on a nice drive for his team to make it 14-7 with 2:00 left in that period (a lot of action in the initial 10 minutes). And Neshaminy looked like they relaxed on that drive perhaps thinking the game would be an easy one (don't do that).

The early pace then slowed down quite a bit over the next 8 minutes or so before Jones hit sophomore Corey Joyce for a 50 plus yarder to make it 21-7 with 6:55 left on the 2nd quarter clock.

The Whippets then responded with a very, very nice 13 play 80 yard drive and scored with less than a minute left in the second quarter. Neshaminy was letting them make too many nice gains with their ground game (misdirection stuff). With that score it was 21-14 for Neshaminy at the half.

In the third quarter Jones hit Zach Tredway for another TD pass with 5:44 on the clock (that score closed out a beautiful 95 yard drive by the Redskins to make it 28-14). And at that point in the game Jones had hit for three aerial TDs even though he had missed on a fair amount of throws (the 'Skins receivers had probably dropped three that were easy catches so they weren't helping). It does appear that Jones either nails it or misses it. As to Dogba, he was also chewing up some nice yards to that time in the game (he just chugs and chugs).

Moving into the fourth Neshaminy then put together another long drive that stalled out in close but they soon got the ball back and then scored after a shorter drive to make it 35-14. Dogba was dinged on that series and went to the bench (he must have had 150 yards, at least, by then) and the back up RB, junior Mike Crescenzo, did the honors on that score.

A little later, following a picked D-Town pass and a short field for Neshaminy, the 'Skins punched in another ground score to make it 42-14. And once again the back up RB - Crescenzo - did a really great job filling in for Dogba (he's got very quick acceleration).

Then that's the way the game ended.

It seemed a little like the game was in slow motion but still Neshaminy must have piled up a lot of yards (probably in that 425 to 450 range). And just like the first two games that they have played it seemed that the other team just sort of faded away in the second half (while the 'Skins just kept on their same game). Plus their game is misleading too as they "do things" that are pretty nice but it just of looks like it's rolling along mechanically - just happening as if it's supposed to be that way (if that makes sense).

Anyway, good game for them (and they are 3-0 so no complaints).

Go 'Skins!

Spring-Ford loses a heartbreaker at Wilson West Lawn 41-40 in 2 OT's

What a game. Not many teams go into John Gurski Stadium and leave with a victory against this District 3 power. The Rams held a 27-24 lead with a minute left but Wilson drove down the field and kicked a tying FG. After the Rams scored in the second OT, they went for 2 and didn't get it.

One thing is for sure, The Pac 10 has shown in the last few years they are for real.

Pennsbury Offense

Haven't seen the Falcons yet this year, but what's up with their offense? 10 points in two games. And all those points came against Frankford. The same Frankford that Perk Valley scored 46 against. I know they went to a spread attack, but what's up?

I guess the good thing for Pennsbury fans is they will be fine come league play. The SOL National is awful this year, all teams except Neshaminy and maybe Bensalem (who I think wins this week vs Lincoln) will go into league play with losing records.

Terror attack in Bangladesh; time for Incapable to hold another global warming forum.

That's the plan right? Divert attention from the terror attacks by holding forums on global warming. It happened in Canada this past week, as Incapabama showed that he could "move on" from the Orlando terrorist attack.

I don't think that works even with the pinhead, low information voters on here; but it won't stop Incapabama from trying.

D1 AAAAAA

North Penn the overwhelming favorite with Downingtown East, Garnet Valley, Neshaminy, Pennridge, Perkiomen Valley, Ridley, and Springford having solid teams.

Pennridge at Perk Valley will help provide the PAC 10's level of play in 2016.

Springford has a tough road trip to Wilson.

Roman Catholic at Downingtown East might give a hint as to Neshaminy's chances versus NP.

Ridley at Garnet Valley will be a battle between two probable playoff squads.

Neshaminy looking to avoid 3 straight losses to Downingtown West.

SE PA….quick hits: 6A

Here’s a fast summary of scores, etc on 6A teams plus a few in lower classes thrown in; Wood, Springfeild, etc. Light stuff for fun and a few facts.

PCL:
St. Joseph’s 1-0;
Wow! Few expected a 49-17 rout of Oaks Christian last week, setting up this week’s game with Don Bosco Prep coming in off a rare shutout by American Heritage last week, 21-0. DBP won last year 55-21.
LaSalle 1-1; Nice rebound beating Pennsbury 28-0 after the 33-24 loss at North Penn. Malvern Prep from the Inter-Ac is next, a team they beat last year 21-14. The Friars lost to St. Augustine Prep-NJ (#7) last week 47-30 and will come in looking for pay-back and avoiding a 0-2 start.
Archbishop Ryan, 5A, 2-0; Great start averaging 40ppg destroying Quakertown then Bonner with Lansdale Cath this week setting up good stuff vs Judge who will also be 3-0 if get past Sallies. Then LaSalle Sept 24th .
Archbishop Wood, 5A, 0-1; Lost to Bergen Catholic 34-16 last week after the 21-21 “called game” vs Wayne-OH the previous week. Idle this week then St. Joe’s.
Father Judge 2-0; looking to go 3-0 at Salesianum after beating CR North and Germantown Academy by a combined score of 75-14. Catch Sallies in their opener after scrimmaging AI DuPont and Sussex Central.
Roman Catholic 1-1; Tough 28-20 loss to Neshaminy in opener followed by the big win in the War at the Shore beating West Catholic 28-7. Another tough one this week at Kottmeyer playing Downingtown East (1-1). East won last year 35-21.

SOL-Nat
Neshaminy 2-0;
Great start beating Roman 28-20 and Pennridge 31-24. And if they can get past winless Downingtown West who is struggling on the D side allowing 76 total points (!) in losses to Perkiomen Valley 42-41 and Wayne Valley-NJ 34-31, they’ll run the table.

SOL-American
Upper Dublin, 5A, 2-0;
Same with the surprising defending district champion Cardinals who are blowing out people following wholesale graduations, beating Methacton 41-0 and Truman by the same score. Check the schedule to see if you can find a loss!

SOL-Continental
North Penn 2-0;
You knew once they beat LaSalle 33-24 they were good, then beating Downingtown East last week 23-7 sealed that deal. Pennsbury is next and looking shabby after a 1-1 start but it’s Pennsbury-North Penn where anything goes.
CB South 2-0; The schedule says Titans can get a head of steam going before North Penn the 30th especially with winless CR South next being outscored 68-7 vs Judge and CB West. South’s D shut down Abington 13-6 on the road and CR North in their home opener 35-6.
CB East 2-0; Teams are really scoring a lot of points early this season with the Pats outscoring Cheltenham and Hatboro 66-13. Nothing like winning your first two unless it’s your first three. Methacton will be win #3 before the great clash with CB South.
CB West 2-0; The Bucks are kicking-A and taking names too, beating Hatboro 17-6 and CR South 28-7. Winless Quakertown is next but it’s West’s first road game and Panthers battled hard last week at Souderton; no give-up. Early and all but collectively the Central Bucks schools are 6-0 by a combined score of 159 to 38, a 27-6 avg score.
Souderton 2-0; Here’s another undefeated Continental defeating Plymouth Whitemarsh 38-23 and Quakertown 26-20. I don’t think anyone on the team has been to Hatboro where they play this week in Hatter’s home opener. Should be tough given Souderton’s struggles with Q-town.
Pennridge 1-1; Rams won’t have any trouble scoring points this year with their typical line, decent backs and an exciting quarterback. But after seeing what Neshaminy did to them in Perkasie you’ve got to think they’re in big trouble Friday night in Collegeville looking down Perkiomen Valley’s offensive juggernaut. This one could top 100.

Pioneer Liberty
Perkiomen Valley 2-0;
First year coach Rob Heist has it going with an experienced team that is veteran in skill and the lines making them one tough nut to crack. QB Stephen Sturm (68%, 31136yds, 31/7 Td-Pick last year) at 6-2 200 is the real deal as are receivers Justin Jaworski with 1224 yds and Sean Owens with 417. Ricky Williams had 628 rushing last year and the lines are legit; Chris Jiminez 6-5, 265, Vaughn Stolzer, 6-2, 250, Jahir Holmes 6-1, 240, Sam Bonavita, 6-1, 230, Kevin Mo, 6-1, 310, Noah Shine 6-1, 225. Beat Downingtown West in the opener there 42-41 and Frankford 46-24. Pennridge is next in what should be one of the top games in Eastern PA with Sturm and Rams QB Jagger Hartshorn lighting up the night sky.
Spring Ford 2-0; The Rams are already in high gear, beating Unionville 33-3 then whipping Chester last week 55-22. Like Perk Val, they return a strong core, especially at skill and the lines where 4 of 6 return. With their principal receivers (893 yds) and running backs (1425yds) returning, they’re set. The new QB, TJ Pergine (5-11, 185, jr), always a strength in Coach Brubaker’s system, completed 11 of 15 for 158 yds and 3 Tds plus ran for two scores against Chester. Wilson (West Lawn) is next. Bulldogs are 1-0 after beating arch rival Governor Mifflin 38-7 last week with Central Dauphin loomng after Spring Ford. Sandwich game? Coach was on the Wilson staff for years as O/C. Should be a good one but Wilson is one mean Bulldog at Gurski.

Central
Ridley 2-0;
Sailed past Truman in the opener 41-6 then fought off defending conference champ Haverford who brought it before losing 7-0 and falling to 0-2. The Raiders are on the road again this week at nemesis Garnet Valley for another battle between historic Central League kingpins.
Garnet Valley 2-0; G-Val is still G-Val, wearing you down with depth and the usual compliment of good players. After winning the slugfest at West Chester against Rustin in the opener 24-16, they got it together the following week to crush Upper Darby 66-22. Nice start, going 2-0 on the road. Next up is Ridley in Jags home opener before a packed house of rowdy fans and pumped up Jaguars. Tough spot for Ridley.
Springfield, 5A, 2-0; Great start for Springfield getting out the gate fast with road wins at Glen Mills beating the Battling Bulls 24-16 and Conestoga where they destroyed the Pioneers 66-22. Winless Upper Darby is next playing Cougars in their home opener.

Ches Mont National
Downingtown East 1-1;

Beat Delaware Valley in opener 23-6 then lost at North Penn 23-7 in a game that was 7-7 early in the 3rd. Dangerous Roman Catholic is next and if they can win this one, they can string a few together before playing Shanahan.
Downingtown West 0-2; Lost in their opener to Perkiomen Valley 42-41 and again the following week to Wayne Valley-NJ 34-31, also at home. Great comeback vs Perk Val with some tough scheduling with Wayne Val who returned a lot of skill people off a 9-2 season. Neshaminy is next in their third straight home game.
Coatesville 1-1; Coatesville pounded Simon Gratz 51-14 to begin the season then lost to D3 power Cumberland Valley 41-21. Thought C-ville might bring more to the table with CV rebuilding and on the road and in their season opener.
Bishop Shanahan, 5A, 2-0, With a lot of bodies returning they’re starting strong, routing GW 56-13 then Glen Mills 29-6 last week. The fun continues this week at home against Pottstown who at 0-2 allowing 63 points won't slow em down.

Wood - Bergen

Wood had a clear TD pass to Webb just before half that would have tied game at 13 at the half called out of bounds, very bad call. Settled for field goal 13-9 at half. Penalties again hurt Wood in first half and giving up 2 big plays on confusion in secondary. Wood moved the ball when balanced attack, Wood had the ball on the BC 20 down 20-16 with 6 minutes left in game. BC was getting a lot of pressure and was covering extremely well, they are a good team..Wood needs to clean up penalties, give up fewer big plays, protect the blitz better, and they should be very successful...

FINAL: 'Skins 31 - Rams 24

The feed on the Neshaminy - Pennridge game dropped out late in the 2nd qtr. so it became a bit confusing. Seems I missed a late score by the Rams and then a very late field goal by Neshaminy to take the lead into the halftime break, 10-7.

Then I'd say the Redskins seemed to be slightly on top of the game in the first half -- but not by much. And Tredway was injured in 1st qtr and did not come back in the game (looked like he had his bell rung on punt return when the Rams' linebacker - Talburton?? - nailed him) -- the rest of the guys stepped up so that was good.

NOTE: The Rams' quarterback IS their team offensively. I don't think they would have done as much without him -- he can really run. He is quick to accelerate and has a great sense of the field (he seemed to "see" where the space was and take off in that direction). He looked as if he twisted an ankle in the third as he was limping a bit but he still pulled off a few nice runs after that.

Anyway, after the halftime break the Rams received the opening kickoff and it was all the QB on that first drive as the Green took the lead, 14-10.

On the ensuing kickoff, and after setting up, Jones hit Garlick for a big gain and then Dogba had a nice 20 yarder to take it in for score which put the 'Skins back on top, 17-14.

The Rams then had a nice drive but killed it with penalties. The QB was carrying them again but even he had penalty for yelling about something after he was sacked (that may have been when he tweaked his ankle). Still, a nice field goal by Rams' kicker made it 17-17 so it was not all a waste for the home club.

Getting the ball back again the 'Skins had great drive going but Jones was picked (it was actually tipped up off the Neshaminy receiver) with the Rams DB taking it to Neshaminy's 40 or so. From there Pennridge took it in quickly and they went up, 24-17.

At that point, and with five minutes to go in game, Neshaminy took over at their 22 after the kickoff. On the first play Jones throws a beautiful 78 yard TD pass to Oleh Manzyk and the score is tied 24-24 after the PAT and with 4:32 on clock.

The Rams get the ball but end up punting and after Neshaminy's short return on their end of the field Jones hits Manzyk again for a 60 yard or so pass that gets 'Skins to the Rams' three. From there Dogba takes it in as 'Skins go back up, 31-24, with 1:17 on clock.

Following the kickoff the Rams started at their 22. A couple of nice runs (one by the QB) puts them at their 45 or so. From there the QB throws deep (to about the 20) where Joel Stills picks it at 20 (and it was a great catch too). With 42 seconds on the clock a couple of knees is all it takes and Neshaminy banks it, 31-24.

The Rams QB is good - without him this probably is not a close game.

The 'Skins started slow but seemed to grow into the game. Jones had a bad completion percentage in the first half but lit it up in the second half. Dogba also started off slow but probably had 125 to 150 (I'm guessing).

With Tredway out Manzyk filled in nicely (Garlick too).

'Skins have been behind in both of their games but then came back to win them. Nice to see they don't quit. Jones throws a lot and he doesn't throw picks (one in two games with probably 50 plus passes) but he misses more than you'd like. But he makes up for it with some big strikes (he did it against Roman too). They also pulled off some very nice screen passes tonight.

Dogba chugs and chugs. He is deceptive in that he can get into a pile at times and it looks like a scrum but he'll step out and gain some ground. He doesn't have blazing speed but enough. He's a hard charger.

The Defense is running around. and getting after it but they issued a few tackles that allowed big gains but overall they stay on it (they started getting to the Rams QB late which was nice to see). The 'Skins DBs are around the ball.

As an observation both Roman and Pennridge seemed to fade in the games and Neshaminy continued playing hard -- I think that made the difference in both.

Another observation is the Rams defense looks good.

SJP 2016

I've seen SJP, LS & AW this year. The only way AW stays within 21 points is if SJP is jet lagged and mails it in. Same with LaSalle. Prep has significantly more talent than Woof or LaSalle and will win the PCL going away. LaSalle lost too many players and is too young. Wood did not reload/recruit enough to keep up this year. Swift totally unstoppable.

Wayne Valley 34 - Downingtown West 31

Downingtown West lost another close one. They must be the best 0-2 team in SEPA. Wayne Valley went 9-2 and reached the North 1, Group 4 semifinals last year. West did not schedule any cupcakes in non league play and now faces a tough Neshaminy team in what may well be a must win situation next week in Downingtown. Another loss and they will probably ly have to run the table to make the District 1 playoffs.

RIDLEY

Rid_Hav_4DSC_4453.jpg

HAVERFORD >> Dave Wood wasn’t certain how long it would take, when it would happen or how the celebration would unfold. All he knew was that if he were going to help Ridley High return to Central League dominance, there first would be one major correction.

At some point, the Green Raiders were going to have to defeat the sitting champion, a program that their seniors had never beaten, a well-coached growing power. At some point, they would have to beat Haverford.

Haverford running back Mike Romanofsky runs past Ridley linebacker Ryan Gricco during first half at Haverford High. The Fords couldn’t get much past the Green Raiders’ defense in a 7-0 Ridley victory. (For Digital First Media/Eric Hartline)

That point, Wood figured, arrived with just over five minutes left Friday at A.G. Cornog Field. That’s when he told quarterback Cade Stratton to let it fly and throw it high.

“As much as we pound the ball, sometimes play-action will get one-on-one coverage,” Wood said. “So we went to the tall receiver.”

The 41-yard pass from Stratton to 6-foot-4 Liam Wright down the right sideline would land the Raiders at the Haverford 20 in a scoreless game. Less than three minutes later, Stratton would squeeze into the end zone from a yard away for the only touchdown in a 7-0 Ridley victory.

Though the Green Raiders would attempt just 11 passes, six were complete, all to Wright, none more valuable than that 41-yard connection that finally cracked a strong Fords defense.

The Raiders improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Central in their first season under Wood. Haverford, rebuilding some after its championship season, dipped to 0-2, 0-1 in the conference.

“This league is going to be real close,” Fords coach Joe Gallagher said. “We entered this game and said, ‘We’re in the Central League now. It’s going to be a nine-round bout.’ Tonight was Round 1. That’s all. We lost the first round. We have eight more rounds to go. And we take pride in getting better every week, which I know we will.

“I relate it to boxing. We’re the belt-holders. And until somebody takes it, we’re still the champs. It’s nine rounds. This is one round. We’re still in it.”

Both defenses kept it close, occasionally with big plays, but also with bend-don’t-break resourcefulness, as each team missed a field goal attempt late in the first half.

Haverford had arrived at the Ridley 31 with 7:36 to play, and the Green Raiders held on downs. That gave Stratton a chance to salvage what had been a difficult week.

Ridley quarterback Cade Stratton runs past Haverford’s Kevin Odgers during first half at Haverford High. (For Digital First Media/Eric Hartline)

“I had a 101 fever Tuesday and Wednesday,” the senior said. “Thursday, it was about 100. But I just had to hydrate, get over it, take some medicine. I practiced Thursday and felt better and woke up this morning still a little drowsy. But I got over it. It’s game day. And you do whatever you have to do to win.”

Stratton passed for 88 yards and added 40 yards rushing, including the most important yard of the warm night.

“It could have definitely gone either way,” Stratton said. “It definitely gets your heart moving. You just have to do whatever you can to get one touchdown. We knew going into halftime that one touchdown was going to win this game.”

Stratton set that up with his pass to Wright.

“I always tell him, with him, one-on-one is one-on-none,” the quarterback said. “I just put it out there and hoped he would run under it. He did. He made an awesome catch.”

Haverford was able to move the ball at times, particularly behind Mike Romanofsky, who rushed for 89 yards, including bursts of 35 and 28 yards. Quarterback Jake Ruane passed for 101 yards, 64 to Chris Trainor. Jack Farrell and Jordan Mosley made interceptions, and Kevin Odgers made multiple key stops to challenge the Raiders. But it was the interception by Malik Young with 5.5 seconds to play that finally gave the Ridley seniors a victory over Haverford.

“They are a great football team,” Wright said. “We put a lot of work in. It was a great game. Our coaches told us coming into this game that this was the biggest game of the year. They are Central League champions. And we are starting from nothing and have to build something up.

“This feels amazing.”

For Ridley, the challenge continues, with a game next week at Garnet Valley. Haverford will answer the Round 2 bell at Conestoga.

“This was a great high school football game,” Wood said. “Our kids played great. And to put a goose egg up against them in their home opener, it gives our kids a lot of credit.”
