Lehigh Valley Opening Weekend

Not a lot to glean from the EPC games, where the south dominated the north and most teams had their starters out by halftime. Still, there were some interesting results, particularly in lower classifications, and some individuals who had big opening weekends.

-The big news in the EPC was Whitehall getting beaten by East Stroudsburg South. The Zephyrs were bizarrely ranked #4 in the state by PennLive in their preseason 5A rankings, despite losing 9 starters on offense and their head coach. But it was the Zephyr defense that gave them problems last night, getting gashed by Cavalier running back Ryan Clark for 269 yards and 3 TDs on a whopping 27 carries. The Cavaliers racked up 476 yards of total offense. It could be a long year for Whitehall.

-Allentown Central Catholic got the other notable win, beating perennial north favorite Stroudsburg 38-14. Logan Bachman, who ran for 1,400 yards and 24 TDs last season, kicked his year off with 29 carries for 223 yards and 3 TDs. Bachman is a huge back (6'2 225) and rumbled his way to a ton of tough yards. Stroudsburg is not as strong as they've been in years past, but it was a good start for the team I picked to finish last in the EPC South.

-Becahi, Emmaus, Parkland, Freedom, Liberty, and Easton all rolled by mercy rule. Nothing to see here.

-Saucon Valley started a freshman at quarterback in their season opener against rival and league favorite Southern Lehigh and walked away with a 27-13 win. They didn't ask Dante Mahaffey to do a ton, but the 9th grader threw for a Td and ran for another, and relied on running back Ian Csisek to pile up 151 yards behind another excellent SV offensive line. Logan Edmond, Southern Lehigh's all state candidate quarterback, threw for 194 yards and ran for 136, but the Panthers largely kept Southern Lehigh out of the end zone.

-The other big upset was Northwestern Lehigh knocked off Notre Dame (GP) in overtime, 42-41 after the Crusaders missed an extra point in overtime. The Tigers had been one of the stronger programs in the Colonial League in the early part of the 2000s, but have fallen on hard time recently. They announced they're back in a big way, rushing for 323 yards against league favorite NDGP. Quarterback Devon Bollinger ran for 139 yards and 3 TDs and threw for 110 yards and 2 TDs, while tailback Nick Henry chipped in 120 yards on the ground. Notre Dame mounted a furious fourth quarter comeback to force OT, but a tough snap on the extra point spelled doom for the Crusaders. Cole DeFranco threw for 342 yards and 5 TDs and ran for a TD, with senior receiver David Sanders catching 8 balls for 187 yards and 4 TDs, but Notre Dame had tons of trouble stopping the Tigers ground game, which proved to be fatal.

Quakertown in the SOL American Conference?

Quakertown has been a very successful program in the SOL American. They are a 6A program. Why does the SOL still have them in SOL American and not in the more geographically suited Continental? Give Tennent a break and chance to build their program and put them in the American. Banas needs to stop ducking better competition and play in the conference that they are more suited for both enrollment wise and geographically.

Mid State Football Top 20….Capsules (1-10)

Mid State Football Top 20….Capsules (1-10)

Here are some more odds and ends that may be of interest as well as a few stats, personnel info, etc from the ranking previously posted on Aug 5th.

1 State College 10-3 home to Mifflin County 2-8

State will prevail here but don’t be surprised if the Huskies battle early with almost everyone back from last year’s 2-8 squad. Well, maybe. Mifflin County (District-6) is way outgunned and while it is the opener, they should get hammered against State’s veterans so long as the Lions stay focused with St. Augustine-NJ up next. They crushed them last year 56-7, 51-7 the year before and 52-7 the year before that. MC is a Mid Penn team playing in the Colonial since 2011 against teams like Waynesboro, Greencastle-Antrim, Northern and Shippensburg. They are the result of a merger between Indian Valley-Lewistown in 2011 that hasn’t gone so well with 6 consecutive losing seasons. And they don’t get a break in their non-conf games either starting off with State High, then home to Hollidaysburg and Northeastern. Hollidaysburg is one of those teams (8-4 last year) who put some points on the board; 27 against State and 39 against Gateway. Qb Brady Watters can sling it and run (nice LB corps) and so can Northeastern’s young gun Zech Sanderson (6-5, 205) who got in a groove towards the end of last year as a soph. See SC’s Aug 5th write up.

2 Cumberland Valley 10-3 home to #5 McDevitt-Harrisburg 10-3

Here’s a great opening game rivalry between Mid Penn alphas; CV from the MP-Commonwealth and McDevitt from the MP-Keystone that could set the tone for both. Each lost in their respective district finals last year, CV to Manheim Township 24-21 and McD to Berks Catholic 45-24. CV ripped them last year 49-23 but McDevitt returns a lot more skill although both return starting Qbs, Chase Diehl for the Crusaders (70%, 2937, 29/8) and Jared Plessinger for CV (58%, 1204, 14/7). McDevitt looks like a team ready for a serious run at 4A while CV has just enough parts to make them earn it. With all the weapons McDevitt has they’ll try to light up CV’s new secondary. But CV can just pound and pound, especially with a lead. Plessinger is one of their better throwing Qbs and in a Wing-T that’s an asset. It’s a great venue behind the school at Chapman in a tight stadium where it can get loud. Probably too close to call. See CV’s Aug 5th write up.

3 Manheim Central 13-1 at Susquehanna Township 4-6

Qb Evan Simon (2599, 60%, 29/10) and Rb Tyler Flick with 1489 yards should be too much for Susquehanna Twp coming off 5-5 and 4-6 outings. Three senior lineman return for MC in Tyler Dougherty (6-0 275), Brent Wolgemuth (6-0 268) and Josh Painter (6-1 280), plus half the D keyed by LB Landan Moyer (93 tackles) and DT Tyler Dougherty. They won districts last year beating Governor Mifflin 30-29 before falling to Gateway in the semifinal 31-28. But Hanna is tough stuff playing out of the Mid Penn Keystone with McDevitt, Cedar Cliff and Lower Dauphin and in their opener in Harrisburg could be feisty for a while. Barons!

4 Berks Catholic 13-1 at #18 Exeter Township 7-4

Another “city/area” rivalry here with the Saints visiting Exeter Twp also of Reading. Like McDevitt, Manheim Central and Cocalico, BC is loaded again, in pursuit of a consecutive district title. Senior Qb Terrance Derr (6-2, 195, sr 1098, 63%) is back with most of the backfield tho they did lose Rb/S Cooper Lutz’s 1528 yards to Syracuse. 6 starters return to a defense that allowed 10ppg last year, led by DE Kyle Roberts (6-1 245 sr), DL Luke Painton (6-6, 230, jr) C/NG Nico Myers(6-2, 270, sr) and LB/RB Brandon George (6-4, 240, sr, 66 tackles, Pitt commit). Early homers against Central Dauphin and McDonogh will set the tone then at Malvern Prep 9/21 if you want to catch them in SE PA. Great seeing them step up playing quality large schools. Nice team!

5 Bishop McDevitt 10-3 at Cumberland Valley 10-3

See Cumberland Valley above and the Aug 5th write ups below. Too bad they can’t get a game under their belts before this one. It’s a non-conference but bragging rights mean the world when the West Shore and East Shore play, especially involving private schools McDevitt or Trinity. McDevitt is absolutely loaded again with Qb Chase Diehl back after throwing for 2937 yards with a 70% completion rate, along with a standout supporting cast; Rb CJ Reyes-Diggs (6-1, 190, 592) and his principal receivers who have nearly 2000 yards between them; Nazir Burnett at 1118yds and T’nyis Becker at 878. The OL returns at least 4 starters while DT Carter Christopher (6-3 290 sr) anchors that side. The back field will be upgraded with transfer Devlyn Clair (6-1, 225, jr) who rushed for 732 yards last year for Elizabethtown of the Lancaster Lebanon-Section 2 (Manheim Central, Cocalico, Lampeter-Stasburg, etc).

6 Harrisburg 11-1 home to Coatesville 13-2

Looks like this one features a wiped out Harrisburg offense, their best ever at 47ppg verses a veteran Coatesville team. The Cougars return some good defensive people and Coatesville has some holes. But the Raiders are now “established”, not building, under the guidance of Steelton native Matt Ortega. Coach would like to remove the sting of 2 consecutive losses to Mid Penn Conference Big School teams Cumberland Valley 21-14 in Mechanicsburg last year, at Coatesville the year before 41-21, as well as losses to Harrisburg in ’06, 44-0 and ’07, 34-0 and McDevitt in 08, 39-7 while at York High making him 0-5 against the Mid Penn bad boys. Better bring it Coatesville!

7 Middletown 14-1 at Lower Dauphin 5-5

Maybe 4 to 5 miles separate these two with LD just up Vine St in Hummelstown. It’s another Mid Penn non-conference match up with Mtown stepping up from AAA for the AAAAA Falcons. LD slumped off some with back to back 5-5 campaigns after a 4 year run of 39-11. Meanwhile Middletown has been kicking butt, going 28-2 losing in the last two AAA state final games to Beaver Falls and Quaker Valley. These guys meet every year in brawls with LD playing in the Mid Penn Keystone against McDevitt and Cedar Cliff while Middletown toughens up against East Pennsboro, Milton Hershey and Steelton Highspire. The locals know how small town rivalries go and that this will be a war despite Middletown being the better team.

8 Cocalico 10-2 home to Conrad Weiser 5-6

Here’s one of District-3’s best kept secrets with a 55-19 record the last 6 years.

They return much of last year’s offense that scored 44ppg but have lost much of an outstanding defense that allowed 13 a game. So they’ll be good but likely drop from last year’s level where 10 starters returned. The OL/DL definitely looks promising with size. They’ll beat Conrad Weiser (5-6) in the opener but know they return much of last year’s team that lost 12-7 to Susquehanna Twp and twice to rival Muhlenberg 20-14 and 26-23 in ot. Then they face Governor Mifflin, Elizabethtown, Manheim Township and Manheim Central on consecutive weekends, Mifflin, Etown and Township on the road.

9 Central Dauphin 6-5 home to #10 Wilson 8-4

Old adversaries here with the Bulldogs coming to Landis Field to play Central Dauphin’s Rams. It’s been a great back-and-forth series featuring the excitement of tight games. And with both doing significant reloading it will be fun seeing how this plays out. These are two of the top programs and coaches in the state. Doug Dahms of Wilson in the Lancaster Lebanon League-Section One has a 137-24 (85%) record since 2006 with 10 double digit winning seasons, while Glen McNamee has a 115-36 (76%) won/loss at CD in the Mid Penn Commonwealth over the same time period with 5 double digit winning season and a state title in 2011. About the game, CD returns a great D core of at least 7 of their front 8 and one of the top LB corps in central PA; Mason Griffin (6-2, 220, backup TE), Adam Burkhart (5-11, 220, Starting FB) and Noah Hoffman (6-0, 205, starting Qb). Hoffman doesn’t play it safe in the secondary and is as aggressive at his Backer position. DTs Jaden Baylor (6-4, 295) and Bryce Thomas (6-4, 230) plus Willie Shuller (6-3, 215) at DE will stabilize things upfront as will Nick Chimienti (6-0, 185) at FS; mostly used at CB last year. This will be a head banger with some serious recon probing on the ground for maybe a half until they start testing things above. Rams!

10 Wilson 8-4 at #9 Central Dauphin 6-5

Like Central Dauphin above, Wilson had sizeable grad losses, notably Qb Connor Uhrig’s (1668yds, 64%, 15/6) and their all-time leading rusher Ignacion Reynoso (1561 rush yards, 272 receiving). All totaled he amassed 4778 career rush yards and 79 Tds. Also mimicking CD, they return a great D nucleus (at least 7) that should allow the inexperienced offense to develop. So look for a bruising first game brawl with each playing it close to the vest in a ground pounding low scoring affair. Rams will be hard to run on likely forcing Dahms to try the airways with a green Qb. See the Aug 5th write ups below.

Mid State Football Top 20….Capsules (11-20)

Mid State Football Top 20….Capsules (11-20)

Here are some more odds and ends that may be of interest as well as a few stats, personnel info, etc from the ranking previously posted on Aug 5th

11 Williamsport 7-4 home to Central Mountain 1-9

With Central Mountain, Altoona, Berwick, Hazelton and Crestwood up first, look for a fast start for the Millionaires (like State College) knowing they have key parts of last year’s team back. This includes Joe Fagnano who completed 212 of 327 passes at 65% for 2468 yards last year. His top two receivers also return in super quick Marcus Simmons (5-8, 145, 72/790) and Colin Espisito (5-6, 135, 30/370). The line returns Ben Garverick (6-2 270 sr), Ethan Williamson (6-3 285 jr) and Tucker Kreisher (6-2 275 sr). Of note is the return of one of PA’s top backs in Treyson Potts (5-10, 185 Minnesota commit) who missed all of last year with an ACL after rushing for over 2000 yards as a sophomore. Should roll BIG here.

12 Central Dauphin East 6-5 home to #14 Manheim Township 12-2

East High is that other team in the MP-Commonwealth that is often overshadowed by SC, CD, CV, et al, with good reason! But, they can be a handful with their 5 year 38-23 won/loss in a tough league and a more seasoned group like this year’s team that returns their Qb, some backs and receivers and many from last year’s porous defense. Not sure if that’s good or bad but they did beat everyone they were supposed to last year, and pulled the upsets taking down Central Dauphin 35-31 while getting to 5-1 before the crash. They’re a lot like Emmaus, Central Bucks East and C.B. West, being a threat but not quite getting there, making them a spooky bunch that could catch Township here in a big rebuilding year. Panthers?

13 Governor Mifflin 12-2 at #16 Cedar Cliff 7-3

Like Manheim Township, Wilson and Central Dauphin, the Mustangs are in a major rebuild off last year’s 12-2 season where they lost to Manheim Central in the 5A district final 30-29 after shocking Harrisburg. That puts them in jeopardy in the opener for a rare game in Camp Hill playing Cedar Cliff. This will be big stuff at West Shore Stadium since the Colts have some people back from last year and look to be highly competitive coming off a 7-3 season. But, Mifflin is one of “the” programs with 14 consecutive winning seasons and a 7-year record of 67-19. The Mustangs are the real deal almost every year, which is where Cedar Cliff wants to be. A win here would begin that process.

14 Manheim Township 12-2 at #12 CD East 6-5

Wow, the mid state is loaded with season opening games between “name” teams. It just goes on and on and is great to see the top teams from the Lancaster-Lebanon, Mid Penn and Berks County Leagues mix it up, especially in openers. Bravo! This is a tough spot for Township playing a more veteran team at Landis Field where they’ll be a good turnout Saturday that should include staff and players from Central Dauphin perhaps Cumberland Valley who played Friday. So it will draw a crowd for a number of reasons. Plus everyone likes checking out last year’s district champ to see how they stack up this year. They’ll call it a one year thing knowing Wilson was “off” last year unless they win here. Panthers and Streaks!

15 Dallastown 8-3 home to Hempfield 8-4

Check out D-Town’s Wildcats who finished with a flurry going 5-1 but losing to Hempfield 31-28 in the 1st round. This came after they lost to the Black Knights in the opener in Dallastown 38-14 so they’ll be pumped. They return one of the top backs in central PA in Nyzair Smith (5-10, 180, sr) with 2097 rush yards last year. 6-3, 195 sr John Cook got time at Qb (10 games 10/19 155yds) so they should be diverse. Meanwhile Hempfield graduated one of the top dual threat Qb in Mark Himmelsback who passed for 1476 yards and threw for another 1510….and still only got 8 wins? The LL seems to often have the York-Adams’s number but D-town should be improved over last year and won’t have Himmelsbach to worry about. Wildcats….in an emotion packed opener!

16 Cedar Cliff 7-3 home to #13 Governor Mifflin 12-2

Some of the characteristics that apply to CD East apply to Cedar Cliff but to a slightly lesser degree in that they can field some talented teams that pull major upsets or come close but rarely advance in the post season. Playing in the MP-Keystone with McDevitt (72-14 last 6), Lower Dauphin (49-21, last 6) and Susquehanna Township (38-31 last 6) will prepare you for many opponents, ones looking like these Mustangs in Friday night. But it won’t be anything easy against one of the programs in the district. Mifflin is always in the postseason. And with a average winning margin of 40-13 last year, they played a lot of guys who will take the field with experience. Programs like Mifflin reload. So despite Cedar Cliff’s numbers returning and their being home, it will take a strong, errorless effort to beat Governor Mifflin. Mustangs and Colts!

17 Central York 6-4 home to West York 2-8

With 6-2, 190, senior Qb Cade Pribus (+1784 passing, +528 rushing, offers from Delaware, Army), returning and a pile of last year’s running backs, the Panthers should again be exciting on offense after scoring 31ppg last year. The D is thin but most of their conference competition had big grad losses as well including York High, Red Lion and D-town. West York’s program has plummeted from going 79-21 from 2007 to 2014 to 5-5, then back-to-back 2-8 seasons the last three years. Central won last year 28-13 so it’s a bit of a rivalry where they don’t want to slip up with Cumberland Valley and Hempfield next, before getting into the York-Adams race.

18 Exeter Township 7-4 home to #4 Berks Catholic 13-1

Exeter should be in big trouble here rebuilding after severe graduation losses including their Qb who was also their leading rusher, 2 other rushers and lead receivers. Coach Matt Bauer has turned the program around (See Aug 5th) but Berks Catholic could be one of the top teams in the state, definitely at the 4A classification along with Bishop McDevitt. They lost to them last year 48-7 with a better team than this year’s so it looks like a long night for Exeter. But congrats on upgrading the schedule the last few years playing Perk Val, Spring Ford, Unionville, Hempfield and Lower Dauphin.

19 Selinsgrove 8-3 at Lewisburg 4-7

The big loss is the graduation of record setting Qb Logan Leiby who completed 64% of passes for 3782 yards. His Td to Pick ratio was 42-15. The receiver corps was also gutted with 3112 of their 3782 yards graduating. RB Joe Kahn (6-0, 190, sr, 1114yds) and WR Joshua Nylund (5-10, 180, jr, 30/519) return with 5 to the defense. Because this one is at Lewisburg and the opener, it could be a game. The Green Dragons play in the Heartland-2 while Selinsgrove is in the Heartland-1. Last year saw Lewisburg play mostly sophomores, and juniors, with a few freshman sprinkled in, and they still won 4 games. And the Heartland and last year’s schedule wasn’t a bunch of cupcakes playing Southern Columbia (16-0, state champ), Mount Carmel (8-5) and Danville (9-3), Central Columbia (9-3) and Jersey City (7-4) before losing to historic power Loyalsock Township in the playoffs. They return their junior Qb Nicholas Shedleski (6-3, 200, 1154yds), Rb Max Moyers (5-9, 185, 1125), only a sophomore and almost the entire receiving corps. The line has some brutes, all seniors in Austin Weisser 6-6 275, Anthony Hibbert 5-11, 265, Brent Coulbourn 6-4, 270 and Justin Blount 6-1, 240 and others. The Dragons aren’t supposed to ever beat the Seals but you never know!

20 Red Lion 8-3 home to McCaskey 2-8

Even tho the Lions are greatly depleted from last year, an opening slate of J. P. McCaskey and Waynesboro at home, could get them off to a good start before heading to Chambersburg where the Trojans have gone 3-37 the last 4 years. And since taking over the helm in 2012, Coach Jesse Shay turned things around after going 1-9 and 4-6 for 4 straight winning (31-13) seasons. LB Elijah Workinger (6-2, 245, sr, 98 tackles) is the center piece to their defense and a good one, joined by fellow LBs Ben Hornberger (6-1, 180, sr), Quentin Lyons (6-3, 190, sr) and Kurt Keough (6-0, 175, sr). Jared Miller (6-0, 230, sr) returns up front. But they’ll sorely miss Qb Zach Throne’s 1350 passing yards (67%) and 1523 on the ground. With him they lost to York-Adams powers Central York 24-21 at home, Dallastown 40-27 at D-town and Wilson 42-7 in the postseason.

Gang Green???

Curious to what you know or any insight that you might have.

Predict the order of finish between Carroll, O'Hara, and Bonner?

How will the Central League shape up? I'm sure GV will be tough and it sounds like you're high on Haverford. I watched the Ridley/AP scrimmage and even though some have said that Ridley is young I thought they performed well versus the Knights. Springfield lost a lot, right? Can they just reload to keep the solid play going? Marple?

Anything on Episcopal and Haverford School?

What would your Delco 7 be to start the season?

Thanks!!!

PIAA Eligibility Question

If a kid plays his freshman year sparingly (but completes the entire school year) at a PIAA school and then transfers into an Inter-Ac school. The Inter-Ac school decides to have him repeat his freshman year but he plays varsity as a freshman. Once this player becomes a senior(5th year), is he eligible to play against PIAA schools? If he plays what is the penalty to the non-PIAA(Inter-Ac) school and the PIAA school that plays them?

Not looking for opinions, just actual PIAA/Inter-Ac policy as this is an actual scenario, this school plays 4 PIAA schools this year and player has signed already with a FCS School.

Q&A with Bishop McDevitt offensive guard Logan O'Grady

What have you been doing as of late with your workouts?
“This summer has been pretty intense. I have trained three days a week with Dave Brixus at EXSP and twice a week with my teammates at Spooky Nook. I have also been working out and lifting with my teammates three days a week.”

What do you feel you have improved on the most since football ended?
“Definitely speed and flexibility. I have dropped about 25 pounds and focused on speed off the line and getting downfield. The weight loss has helped significantly.”

Who do you open the football season with? What are your thoughts on them overall?
“We open with CV. They have beat us the past two years, so we are very motivated to come out with a win. It will be critical for our defense to stop the Wing T. Offensively, we need to come out and play with intensity and stay focused.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“We have a very strong group of returning starters. Obviously our QB, Chase Diehl, linemen Carter Christopher, Sawyer Morgan, and Josh Dougher, receivers Nazir Burnett and T’Nyis Becker. Defensively it is Dray Donnelly, Tate Myers, Bryce Barnes and Marquin McArthur-Melendez who will all be huge factors in our success. We have the weapons we need to be a very successful team.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“I think probably CV because it is our first game. We really need to get off to a strong start.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Absolutely. It has always been my goal to play college football. I want to be sure I end up at the best school for me both academically and athletically. As soon as I know where that is, you will know.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have one offer from Southwest Minnesota State University. I am also very interested in VMI, Davidson, Robert Morris as well as several PSAC schools. I am definitely leaving all doors open right now.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest (skip question if this does not apply)?
“Probably VMI because I am an Army brat. My dad has 28 years of active duty right now and eventually I want to follow in his footsteps.”

“Yeah, of course. Both of my parents graduated from the University of Miami. I have been a huge Canes fan for as long as I can remember.”

Q&A with Bald Eagle linebacker Kael Gardner

How have the preseason practices been going as of late
“I have been working out with the team this summer from 8-10 on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. We would lift every one of those days and have agility on Monday, team offense on Wednesday, and speed on Friday. The team had a couple 7-on-7 tournaments that we attended.”

What do you feel you have improved on the most since football ended?
“Since football ended, I have focused on a couple things. I need to work on my hips and staying low and also my using my hands more to fight off blocks.”

Who do you open the football season with? What are your thoughts on them overall?
“We will open the 2018 season with Troy. We played them for the first-time last year and it was a tough game that opened up in our favor. I think overall, they are a tough team. I know last year they had some younger kids who were key players for them. I believe it will be a good game.”

How do you believe your team will be next season?
“I think our team has a lot of potential for 2018. We have a lot of starters returning on both sides of the ball. We have a handful or more of kids who have two years of experience and are stepping up as leaders. Our line was young last year and is still going to be. They are a little undersized, but a lot quicker than before.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?
“As a team, we just want to take it one game at a time so as of right now, it is our first game.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I want to play football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve been recruited by some Ivy League schools like Yale, Harvard, Cornell, Columbia, Patriot League schools like Colgate, and Lafayette, along with some other schools. Those are the big ones.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not visited any colleges yet.”

“I attended Cornell, Yale, and Harvard. Overall, I learned a lot at all of these camps. I got to compete with some very good athletes.”

Q&A with Forest Hills athlete Adam Cecere

How did the baseball season go during the spring?
“The baseball season went really well in the spring. We fell short of the District 6 title by two runs, but other than that, it was a great year with my guys.”

What did you do with sports during the summer?
“This summer, I played a ton of baseball, but every day I was home I was down at the school with the football team at optional workouts such as weight training and speed work. Being away playing baseball a lot, this summer forced me to have to lift on the road in hotels or local gyms.”

Who do you open the football season with? What are your thoughts on them overall?
“We open the season with Chestnut Ridge. They're always a very stellar ball club and they are always discipline. I haven't looked at much tape yet, but we know that they'll come to play ball.”

How do you believe your football team will be next season?
“Our team has the opportunity to be great, just like the past three years I've been playing. We have a ton of potential, but that means nothing. We have a good opportunity in front of us to make another run like last year.”

What is the toughest football game on your schedule for 2018?
“The toughest football game on our schedule is tough to say, but Richland always comes to play no matter what. We are neighbors and as you probably know, their coach is our coach’s son. They'll show up for sure.”

Why did you pick Wake Forest?
“I picked Wake Forest because simply I felt it. Like I walked on campus and I was like this is it right here. Their facilities are off the charts, their knowledge of the game is off the charts, they really care about you down there, but most importantly the education is top ten in the country. No one can take that away from you after it's all said and done.”

How important were their coaches in your final decision?
“The Coaches were really important. Anyone can tour campuses and love them, but you have to know who you're going to be around. They have great people in the program down there and with that, I always know they'll bring quality people in to play alongside me. They were really important, but don’t sell it all on just one coach. As we all know, the coaching market is always changing.”

What other schools were considered?
“Some of the other schools I considered for baseball were Virginia, Pittsburgh, TCU, Vanderbilt, Duke, Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, South Carolina, Louisville and Kentucky. For football, I had no offers to play quarterback, mostly because I thought of myself as a power five guy or I would play baseball. I did have interest to play quarterback and/or linebacker at Penn State, UCLA, Pitt, Toledo, North Carolina, Duke, Temple, Duquesne, Robert Morris, and Ohio State.”

What are your plans to continue getting ready for the college level?
“My plans to continue to get ready for the college level start mentally. The mental side of the game is huge and hanging around older guys who have been around, talking to former big leaguers helps in that perspective a lot. Physically, it is just a grind. It really is an everyday job because when I'm not working, someone else is. Sometimes I get home around 10:30 at night and then I have to keep my classwork up to date. I am just continuing to grind on the daily and manage my time. That is what I'm really working on.”

What is the toughest game on your schedule for 2018?

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Probably Buffalo, Syracuse, Rutgers or Villanova. They all seem to like me and my play style a lot.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I only went on trips to Syracuse, Rutgers, Temple, and Akron. I was supposed to go to Villanova and Pitt but I had some install stuff going on with my team that I couldn’t miss.”

What camps did you attend this summer? How did the camps go overall?
“My first college camp was at Rutgers and I thought I did really good. I only had two balls caught on me for seven yards in the 1-vs.-1 period and my feet felt very fast. I also went to Akron and Syracuse and both of those I felt good about my performance, but my 40 time was slow. I only ran a 4.7, but my shuttle time was a 4.1. It wasn’t my best, but it’s still good.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up was Oregon because of the uniforms and I liked the swagger that they all played with.”

The Left a little too extreme!!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...o-serve-jeff-sessions/?utm_term=.a111c21e0215

There has been a lot of this going on from the left. The guy is a shop owner along the border and because he chose to get his picture taken with a member of the administration, he's suffering. Sarah Huckabee Sanders not being served in a local restaurant. Kind of childish, wouldn't you say!!?? The thing that the left has to remember is that they are not the majority. It's basically 50-50. They're not making converts when they do this. They're basically showing that they're kind of petty!!

LIBERTARIAN 2018!!!

2018 PRESEASON OPEN BOOK POP QUIZ

The 2018 acclimation period has ended. But we are going to continue to bring some heat. Be prepared to sweat and get banged around in full contact drills. As another season rolls upon us, look at The Man in the Glass. Are you prepared? Who was taking notes and diligently studying? Class is about to begin. Don’t fret, we have provided a quick open book quiz to get you primed for the upcoming campaign. We will provide answers at a later date. We welcome responses, but are trying to stimulate thought. Enjoy.

1. “Chad’s Verdict”: The first grenade salvo launched at the quintessential bully for running it up on outmanned opponents. We haven’t seen anymore 82-0 “contests.” The divine scales of justice may have balanced on Chad and his program. Look at the history of scores vs OJR. 33-0 loss last year, first in Chad’s tenure to the Wildcats going back to 2010. The previous 7 games/wins were by a combined 284-43. The worm is turning. Hollow District appearances still end with getting bounced by SOL teams.

Based on 2017 rosters, name the 4 teams in the PAC that have more players on NCAA rosters than the Rams. Hint: 3 of the answers will surprise you. They all have lower enrollment than S-F, who was EIGHTH in D1 at 868 boys from 10-12. He's doing less with more.

2. “Steve’s Verdict”: Steve was a notorious recruiter while at ABW. Will the Vikings be the same without Steve leading their recruiting raids? We are certain the benched freshman state champ QB is thrilled he is on the defensive side of the ball at Ursinus. What a dumpster fire, no pun intended. The gods surmise there is more than meets the eye on Steve’s departure. With such a young gun taking over a program of this caliber, have the Vikings jumped the shark?

Operation __________ is playing for James Franklin in State College. Even though shoe thought he was D-II, FCS at best. Good call. You may have meant his brother who is going to Bucknell. Steve’s offer of better treasure at ABW was resisted by the kid from Perkasie.

3. “Tep: David or Goliath?”: The Shepherd is tending the flock at NG now. ECP has beaten IC the last two years in a row, one a massive choke job by the Schmitter in the title game.

__________ is the only program in SEPA with more players than IC on 2017 NCAA rosters. (30 versus 27)

True or False? The transfer QB from North Penn (yes, another—and his third school in 3 years) will lead ‘Tep back to the promised land.

4. “Its Over Johnny!”: The Explorers are still trying to bask in the glow of the chip in the last decade. The downward spiral accelerates as SJP continues to steal their prize fish. UPDATE: The most recent man overboard this Summer has a famous dad. Another “student” with a third school in 3 years, that isn't a red flag, right? Gandalf (a fantasy wizard) was right, we guess the PCL isn't important anymore. A little disingenuous to try mesmerizing us with that spell.

True of False? Explorers are 1-9 in the last 10 games vs SJP. With the strength of the Admiral’s recent recruiting classes, when does LSCHS catch lightning in a bottle and beat the Hawks again? It may be awhile…..

5. “District 1 6A Report Card/Man in the Glass”: Take a peek and peruse the various categories. Feeling like your team was not fairly represented? History does not repeat itself, but it sure does rhyme.

True or False? DTE has twice as many playoff wins since 2004 than all the Central Bucks teams (East, West and South) combined. Enough with the split, PLEASE.

_______ is the largest D1 6A school in enrollment without a playoff appearance.

_______ is the D1 6A team that finally made the playoffs for the first time last year. Atta boy to the new staff and to the players.

_______ is the largest D1 6A school in enrollment without a playoff victory.

Name the five underperforming D1 6A teams that each have just a single playoff victory (and 15 combined losses) in D1 playoffs since 2004. Hint: one has been named in this section already. Look at the report card, its in there.

5. “Jim Roth, Southern Columbia HS, The Formula for Success”: Since the last write up, another PIAA state hubcap in 2017 and over 400 wins for the coal cracker. Truly a remarkable program and track record. Accused of recruiting, etc., but this coach has been dominating D4 and the Keystone State at the small school levels since the late 80s.
True or False? Jim Roth hasn't had one losing season in his 34 at Southern Columbia.

SUCCESS = Players + Competitive Moat + Infrastructure + ________.

6. “Royal Fraud, What the Fluck”: Upper Darby has the third highest enrollment in District 1 from grades 10-12 at 1355, but just a single playoff scalp since 2004. West Catholic with an enrollment of 167 at grades 10-12 and just a few miles down the road is getting better results on (record) and off the field (players to college).

True or False? The Burrs have the best ratio of enrollment to players on NCAA rosters in SEPA ?

OVER/UNDER: 18 Players from WC on 2017 NCAA rosters.

7. “The Pride of Delco”: 6th smallest D1 6A enrollment but 6th in most players on 2017 college rosters. Accused of being short-tempered, abusive and an egomaniac, yet the tradition rolls on and it is hard to ignore the results. Envy is a cardinal sin as is Pride. Radio silence after they had the big comeback playoff win over North Penn.

True or False? Garnet Valley has more players on 2017 college rosters than Malvern Prep.

OVER/UNDER: 10 Players from GV on Centennial or NESCAC (outstanding D-III academic institutions) on 2017 NCAA rosters.

True or False? Doctor Rand McNally has jumped and sped into town and determined Garnet Valley is not actually a DELCO institution.

POT POURRI

OVER/UNDER: 6.5 Wins for DTW this season with the super QB. Is this the year they can catch DTE?

True or False? SJP wins the Keystone hubcap.

What local Delco D-III university had 41 SEPA players on its 2017 NCAA roster?

True or False? Pottsgrove will drop off the map with the retirement of legendary Coach Rick Pennypacker.

What two teams play in the D-3 version of Army/Navy, the Secretaries Cup?

What coach/administrator has changed jerseys yet AGAIN and is now at OJR? (Hint: CB West, Duke, Pennridge, Emmaus, Wissahickon).

BONUS SECTION:

There were 1055 SEPA players from the 5 counties on NCAA rosters in 2017. There are 5 playing levels or “divisions”: FBS, FCS, II, III and Sprint. We included 9 SEPA high school conferences: Bicentennial, Central, ChesMont, Del-Val, Inter-Ac, PAC, PCL, Public and SOL. Use this information to help answer the questions below.

Rank the five counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery & Philadelphia) in order of most to least (based on where the players live and not where they go to school). (Hint: 50% are from two counties and DELCO is not one of them).

Match the 5 levels of play from above in order from most to least players on 2017 rosters. (Hint: the numbers are 446, 299, 157, 111 and 42).

Rank the 9 high school conferences above from most to least based on their average number of rostered college players as of 2017. (Hint: SOL is not first and the Bicentennial is last).

Name the top high school in each of the nine high school conferences above with the most college rostered players as of 2017.

Name the top college program in each of the five levels/divisions that have the most SEPA rostered players as of 2017. (Hint: 33 FBS, 14 FCS, 61 D-II, 63 D-III, Sprint 42 and all 5 colleges are located in SEPA). These five colleges represent close to 20% of all SEPA rostered players.
