Hey Pittsburgh; Pitt CC vs York?

You guys settle on a Qb yet? York lost their great back and wide-out but have a pile of athletes and a vet OL, roughly 6-2, 250. Viking D will likely slam the door on Bearcats offense but will Vikings have any offense? YAIAA is known for explosive offenses and little defense so you could have your way regardless. I figure it’s an upset for York just to hang unless Vikes offense that ineffective early on.

It’s Time......Welcome to the 2019 Wednesday Night Check In

It great that the HS football season begins in just a couple of days.

Q&A with Northwestern Lehigh running back Nick Henry

How has the preparation been going for this upcoming season?
“The preparation this year has been great. Our practices have been high intensity and a lot of people have been working more than one position.”

What are your goals for the season?
“Our goals this season are to win a Colonial League and a district championship.”

What areas do you feel your team needs to improve on?
“The areas our team needs to improve on is communication on both sides of the ball. We need to cut down on our mental mistakes.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Our opponent week 1 is Notre Dame Green Pond. They are a very good team with a lot of talent. They have a lot of starters coming back, including their entire line. It will be a tough game, but we are preparing very well for them.”

Who do you feel is the toughest individual player you will play against this season?
“The toughest individual player we will play against in my opinion is Christian Greggo from Notre Dame. He is a very quick, shifty running back and he will have a full returning line in front of him so he will be difficult to stop.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Right now, I have no colleges who are trying to recruit me.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not been on any college trips yet.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan on making a lot more trips next summer.”

What camps did you do this summer and how did they go?
“I didn’t attend any camps this summer.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up was Penn State.”

Q&A with Kennard-Dale defensive end Gabe Hulslander

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“Other than regular team workouts, I’ve been doing heavy agility training because I feel being a lineman. Agility training isn’t trained or regarded high enough.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Having a full season of starting under my belt and especially being an underclassman during that season, whatever you lack is crystal clear on film because you’re playing against seasoned guys. My footwork has been a huge focal point for me, and I feel this is where I have improved the most. Also, my hand speed on defense and get-off have also gotten a whole lot better.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I want to improve on my balance and base especially on defense. Being an undersized nose guard and being able to stay low and get under the shoulders of the O-lineman on double teams is crucial to my success. This is an area I would like to see my game improve in.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“We have a ton of young talent and being a team with not too many seniors, I feel like our older guys have the experience to counteract as most of our talent is in a young core that hasn’t played very much. I can say 100% that I feel this is the year that we will breakout and at least be better than the past two seasons I’ve had with the team.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Anyone in our division. In my opinion and I feel like I speak for most of the York/Adams football fans the YAIAA D2 is the deepest division in the county. Every year can be anyone’s year, but if it one team specifically I’d say we have Gettysburg circled on the calendar, especially since we play them in their house, that will be the game that takes the most preparation.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Pequea Valley. Being a Lancaster team, it’s hard to truly prepare for them. We know they lost a lot of guys and especially for us on defense, I feel like we will fair very well knowing what they did last year. I can say this will be a great week to tune in if you’re a KD fan.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Obviously playing football is a goal of mine. It’s been my dream to play ever since I was a 5th grader and especially since my brother is going to be a college football player. He’s definitely paved the way for me to be the next Hulslander to play college ball.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Not many officially due to me being an incoming junior, but I do feel confident that there will be some buzz at the September 1st opening.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“At camps, I’ve been able to visit Washington & Jefferson, Old Dominion, Lock Haven, and Gettysburg.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Unless something seriously pops up during the season, I usually try to just focus on the high school season.”

What camps did you do this summer and how did they go?
“I went to Gettysburg and Old Dominion. I feel like they went very well. I tested in the 40, broad jump, and pro agility very well and I focused very heavily on defensive end when doing 1 on 1’s. I came back with a confidence that I can win on every single play at the line of scrimmage.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Yeah, West Virginia, especially the last couple years being able to watch Will Grier and David Sills. Growing up, my favorite players were Pat White and Tavon Austin.”

Q&A with Freedom wide receiver Gabe Caton

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“As a team, we have been focused on getting stronger and faster. We are preparing ourselves for the official start of the season.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel like I have gotten tougher mentally and physically. I am really looking forward to starting the season. It is going to be an exciting year.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I am always looking to improve across the board, but I am focused on perfecting my routes and the plays.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“We have been preparing physically and mentally since last season ended and we are hoping to get even further than last year and set some new records for Freedom.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“We view every team equally and prepare for each team with the same attention to detail we work on every week.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Our opponent is East Stroudsburg North and we are going to prepare for them like they are the reigning state champions.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I hope to play football and possibly track and field at the collegiate level.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have been talking to schools in the Ivy and Patriot Leagues. I have also spoken to schools at the D2 and D3 levels.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have toured the campuses of the camps I have been to.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I would like to visit some schools in the south and am planning to visit some D2 and D3 schools.”

What camps did you do this summer and how did they go?
“I went to the Holy Cross, Brown, Penn, Lehigh, Richmond, Lafayette, and Bucknell camp.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I have liked a whole bunch of different schools for different reasons.”

Q&A with Notre Dame Green Pond linebacker Jake Hull

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“This off-season, I’ve been working out with my team and at Made strength in Phillipsburg, NJ.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel that I have really improved with my speed, strength, and football IQ.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I’m really trying to improve on being a team leader as this season approaches, especially on the defensive side of the ball.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I feel my team is going to do very well this season, despite losing a lot of great players who did a lot for us the past few years. A lot of us have been doing a great job with reloading spots.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I feel the toughest competition on our schedule this year is Northwestern because they got a lot of returning players and a talented quarterback.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Our first opponent is Northwestern. Overall, they are a solid team with lots of talent. It is definitely going to be a huge game with a lot riding on it. Last year they were our first game and we lost by one point in overtime, so this game really means a lot to my team.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, it is my goal to play college football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I haven’t been recruited by any colleges yet.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Yes, I do have plans to go visit some colleges. Hopefully after this season I will get visits for football.”

What camps did you do this summer and how did they go?
“Yes, I attended Lauren’s First and Goal and that was a great experience. And then I went out to Penn State for a camp which went very well. I was invited to Marshall and Saint Francis for elite prospect showcases, but unfortunately was not able to attend. Hopefully I will be able to go to more next season.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Yes, I did have a favorite college growing up and still do now. My favorite school is Penn State and it is my dream school to play football at. All of my family members are big Penn State fans and my uncle played for them in the late 90’s.”

Q&A with Warwick wide receiver Caleb Schmitz

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been doing a lot of lifting and as a team, we went to Millersville to see where we are as a team. We have been doing a lot of 11v11 and 7v7.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel like I have improved greatly at the wide receiver spot. Last year was really my first year ever playing receiver. I have learned so much from all the different coaches that I have worked with including my wide receiver coach. They have really helped me to have the correct plan when I get to the line and do what I need to do to get open based on the defense.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“Before the season begins, I want to hit the weights as much as possible. I want to be a real hard-hitting safety that make receivers think twice when coming down the middle. Being stronger will really improve my game because I already have such a wide frame that I utilize in my game. Furthermore, I want to watch more film. I really want to be a student of the game this year.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I personally have very high expectations for my team this year. I don't plan on losing a game. That is the mindset I need to have in order to make that happen. I think we have a great group of guys and a great group of coaches that are needed to be a successful football team.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I feel the toughest competition for us this year will be Manheim Township. They have a lot of returning guys with some young talent. It should be a really good game.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Our opponent in the season opener in Ephrata. Ephrata is really growing as a program and they are nothing to take lightly. I am just really excited to be back on the field no matter what team is out there.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I do want to play a sport in college, and I would love to play football. It makes me a much better person on the field and has taught me lessons that I can use in the real world. Football is a blessing that I want to take advantage of. It has helped me in ways I could never imagine. I am very blessed to have supportive parents who help me every day to try to reach my goals.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have been talking to many different colleges at many different levels.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not visited any colleges, but I have been to a good amount of camps and saw some great campuses like Villanova, Delaware, Penn, and Maryland.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I do plan to start visiting some colleges that I am interested in.”

What camps did you do this summer and how did they go?
“I went to Villanova, Delaware, Penn, and Maryland. These camps went really well for me. I had a really great time competing. I got to understand the process better. I picked up a lot of great tips for the season, and most of all I enjoyed getting to talk to coaches face to face after I got done showing what I can do.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college team growing up was Ohio State. I have lots of family from there. It also was always fun to me to mess with my uncle who played at Michigan and won a Rose Bowl there. Every time Ohio State beat Michigan, I made sure he heard about it.”

Mid State Preseason TOP 20

Mid State Preseason Rankings/Scheduling: All classes, Districts 3, 4, 5, 6, 9
1 State College 12-2

State High returns a pile of talent with a favorable schedule playing St. Augustine Prep-NJ, Harrisburg, Central Dauphin and Cumberland Valley at home. They open with fellow District 6 opponent Mifflin County who they beat last year 35-12 and 42-7 in the postseason. The Huskies are rebuilding after graduating 28 seniors but return DL stalwarts in tackles Bronson Smith-Price at 6-5, 320 and Logan Renniger 6-5, 260 to plug the middle. But State’s speed will get the corner then tackle St. Augustine Prep (7-4) who they defeated 19-7 last year in Jersey. SAP went on to lose to St. Joseph Regional (10-2) 16-8 in the Non-Public Group 4 playoffs with SJR winning Group 4 defeating Bergen Catholic 13-0.
2 Manheim Township 10-2
Township opens at home to CD East who they edged last year at Landis Field 16-10. East High has some people but the Blue Streaks are loaded and a tough road out in an opener. Mid rung is still good stuff in the Commonwealth
(CD East, Chambersburg) so you can’t get cocky with these guys. Then comes a road trip to rebuilding Dallastown where they should roll the Wildcats before playing CD East’s big brother Central Dauphin High who they split with last year taking the regular season game 22-12 then losing 27-0 in the postseason rematch.
3 Central Dauphin 9-4
Central Dauphin gets no break from this year’s schedule opening at Wilson, home to Berks Catholic then on to Manheim Township their first three games of the year. Come on CD, play somebody! Then comes a road trips to Cumberland Valley, Harrisburg and State College with Chambersburg at home. They beat Wilson last year 23-7, but it’s never fun opening on the road at Gurski where the Bulldogs are mean. Tough one for the Rams but a noble test to start the season.
4 Harrisburg 13-2
Two time defending Mid Penn-Commonwealth champ Harrisburg like Central Dauphin opens with an array of strong teams, playing at Coatesville before going to Ohio power and defending Div-2 champ Archbishop Hoban….then coming home to play West Shore power Cedar Cliff. Coatesville will be looking for pay back against the Cougars who shocked them 27-24 in the 6A semifinal after Coatesville handled them in the opener 37-6 at Harrisburg’s Severance Field! Too many green parts for the Cougars to come away with a win playing Ortega and company on the road. Rubber match!
5 Manheim Central 14-1, 5A
The Barons return one of the most exciting quarterbacks in the country in Evan Simon and all his principle receivers suggesting they’ll light it up again, beginning with Susquehanna Township and Hempfield at home. Both Hanna and Hemp have veteran Qbs so it could get interesting early with the test being if either can hang. They couldn’t last year losing 44-0 and 28-7 respectively. Then they’re on the road against Warwick and Wilson, teams they edged 27-20 and 20-10 last year at home. Should get interesting!
6 Wilson 8-4
Wilson has a killer schedule, opening at home to Central Dauphin, followed by a road game at fierce rival Governor Mifflin who they defeated 42-28 last year. Then comes Spring Ford against a former member of their staff in Chad Brubaker, the Rams head coach. Coach Brubaker always has them fired up for Wilson, losing last year in West Lawn 33-22, and again in 2017 28-21, and the year before going to double overtime in 2016 before losing 41-40. Some kind of games between these two! Following this is a mandated crossover game with Manheim Central who won last year 20-10.
7 Warwick 9-3, 5A
Warwick should come out smoking playing Ephrata, Garden Spot, Hempfield and McCaskey (Lancaster High) 4 of their first 5 games. But Manheim Central is wedged in game #3 in Lititz, giving Warwick every chance at a win. With both Ds replacing some key parts and two of the best quarterbacks in the mid-state in 6-3, 210 Evan Simon (2753p, 661r, 53%, 30/10) dueling Joey McCracken at 6-2, 185 (1974p, 59%, 27/3), the scorekeeper may have a hard time keeping up. Central won last year 27-20. With just 5 miles separating the towns, it’ll be a packed house with a lot of emotion on the field, and one of the top games in the state September 9th Friday night, under the lights.
8 Berks Catholic 10-3, 4A
They’re rebuilding but will still be a load if they can manage a schedule that has them playing Central Dauphin, McDonogh School and Malvern Prep in 3 of their first 5 games. Exeter, CD and McDonogh kick it off with Exeter the homer. McDonogh will be a hard one in Maryland vs Qb Kristopher Jenner (6-5, 225), a Columbia commit.
9 Governor Mifflin 7-5, 5A
Mustangs open with two homers, Cedar Cliff and Wilson, teams they lost to last season 30-0 and 42-28 before traveling to Cocalico who also beat them 35-21. They’re a good team that could win both going to Denver 2-0. Thereon they’ll cruise until decisive conference games at home vs Exeter Township then finishing at Conrad Weiser. Wilson and Cocalico back-to-back will tell us much about them and set the tone for the year and impact 5A with Cocalico also playing Manheim Central later in the year.
10 Southern Columbia 16-0, 2A
Southern is finally stepping up HUGE traveling to South Carolina to play the top private school in the state, Hammond, owner of 16 state titles. They’re a 3A in the SCISA (SC Independent School Asso.), almost always ranked in SC’s Top 20 with a 10 year won-loss of 117-10. Not as up on SC ball as GA-FL but they are not always in 6A Brynes (Duncan) class, Gaffney, South Pointe etc, but are awesome with inordinate talent. Last year’s freshman CJ Stokes (5-10, 175) is already turning heads and was offered by SC while senior DT Alex Hunley (6-4, 270) already committed to the Gamecocks. Senior DE Jordan Burch (6-5, 250) is the #1 ranked prospect by major services with all the SEC teams (visited Bama) lining up for his services. Southern needs to brace for real speed and physicality not seen in the Heartland Conference vs Shamokin, Shikellamy and Central Columbia.
11 Chambersburg 7-4
Could get off to a hot start opening at home to rival Greencastle-Antrim, then consecutive road trips to South Western and Red Lion before coming home to Altoona. Been a while since South Western scared anyone at The Corral (8-22 last 3) and Red Lion is in a major rebuild. Then we’ll see how much they’ve developed the next week against State College at home who beat them 35-16 last year.
12 Bishop McDevitt 12-2, 4A
Lots of bodies to replace with a charged up Cumberland Valley coming in off a 3-7 season with the memory of their season opening 48-21 loss at home to McDevitt last year. 3-7 still looks like a misprint doesn’t it? Then at Gettysburg who lost significant O skill before coming home to Middletown who is not likely to forget the 40-14 drubbing McDevitt put on them last year in their home opener. The Blue Riders have some great skill types and McDevitt is rebuilding their offense but have some key D people back as well.
13 Cocalico 10-3, 5A
The Eagles open at Conrad Weiser (Berks-1 champ) and Cedar Cliff (Mid Penn-Keystone champ) who are both rebuilding but pesky at home before their home opener against Berks-1 kingpin Governor Mifflin who they defeated last year 35-21. The loss was GM’s second conference loss in four years as they along with Exeter have ruled the roost at 23-2 and 20-4 in conference action.
14 Middletown 14-2, 3A
Lived at the Lamp Post Inn on Main going to PSU (dangerous quarters!) and seeing the great football there and Steelton a mile away checking out the Rollers as well. Most of the crazies I went to HACC with were ex-Rollers before PSU. I digress. Mtown has a manageable schedule opening at home to rebuilding Lower Dauphin, who has their old coach Rob Klock back after a 3 year hiatus. Then comes Northern who rebuilt last year with many back to likely give the Raiders more of a battle than last year’s 29-6 loss. Have a vet line (average 6-0, 215) and a head banger at FB in Kyle Swartz (6-0, 210, sr, 1242r) who is a champion wrestler, going to Army. Then comes their first road game at McDevitt.
15 Lancaster Catholic 10-1, 3A
Lancaster Catholic opens at home to Camp Hill then takes to the road for the next two, Columbia and ELCO, teams they beat last year by an average score of 42-5. They had no trouble with ELCO’s Veer last year and shouldn’t this. Principal challenges will likely come from Donegal with their OL intact running the Wing-T and Annville-Cleona with their good looking Qb Junior Bours and 4 OL’ers with nearly everyone back. LC beat Donegal 22-14 and Annville 23-14 last year on the road. With health, LC could get through the schedule again unscathed, entering the postseason undefeated for a second consecutive year. Look out Middletown, LC is coming.
16 Mount Carmel 10-3, 3A
Tough opener at Central Columbia who they barely beat last year in Mount Carmel 21-13. The Blue Jays were a young bunch last year and will be super primed for this one with so many returning starters. We’ll see if they’re good enough as a lot is expected this year from MCA who also has big numbers returning from a team that only lost to Southern Columbia (16-0, 2A) and North Schuylkill (11-2, 3A); Southern twice.
17 Cedar Cliff 10-3, 5A
If the Colts survive their opening slate of Governor Mifflin, Cocalico and Harrisburg, they will have done a masterful rebuild in a way very few expected. But they are 51-16 the last 6 years. Game one in Shillington will be nasty knowing the Mustangs opened last season getting routed at Cedar Cliff 30-0. The roles are reversed this year with the Colts doing a major rebuild and GM the more veteran team.
18 Shippensburg 10-2, 5A
No Adam Houser (1997r) this year but almost everyone else returns meaning it’ll be a heck of a race in the Mid Penn-Colonial where West Perry, Waynesboro and especially Northern are expected to give battle again. Ship takes on York-Adams teams Dover (35-28), West York (21-14) and Bermudian Springs (37-17) to kick off 2019, but get Dover (good numbers, Qb, Rbs, 3 OL) and Bermudian Springs (40-17 last 5) on the road with West York (won 5 of last 6) expected to be improved.
19 Cumberland Valley 3-7
Excepting Central York….and they have a well-regarded young QB replacing Delaware’s Cade Pribula (brother Beau), CV’s schedule is a killer schedule opening at McDevitt, then home to Central York, Coatesville and Central Dauphin, then to Harrisburg and back home for Chambersburg. That’s a tough row to hoe.
20 Exeter Township (6-5, 5A)
Exeter has a difficult opening game at Berks Catholic who beat them 31-7 last year, then at Boyertown who they crushed 48-27 and Lower Dauphin 43-10. Then comes Spring Ford who won last year’s game 33-27 in overtime. The Eagles as always are going to threaten and if they get through their first four at 2-2 or possibly 3-1, a win at Muhlenberg after the Rams sets them up for a strong finish.

Enjoy..!..and as always feel free to jump in or on. Let the games begin!

Mid State Preseason Report: District 3, The Mid Penn Conferences
Mid Penn-Commonwealth Conference

Harrisburg repeated as conference champ last year going undefeated in league play for the second straight year. Otherwise, the big news was Cumberland Valley going down hard losing their first six games while Chambersburg recovered from four horrible years (won 3 of 40), bouncing back with a 7-4 campaign and 4-3 in MP-C action, a game behind Central Dauphin.
State College (12-2, D6) might edge out conference mates Harrisburg and Central Dauphin with a strong core returning plus getting both at home. Also get CV and out-of-conference St. Augustine-NJ home. Nice! See 7/10 write up for more detail on Lions. Here’s some of that. Looking ahead to 2019, if they can find a quarterback they’ll again be a load with many returning to key positions. The line returns OG Ramsey Kifolo (6-2, 310), C/DT Jason Cameron (5-11, 220), OT Logan Lieb (6-1, 265) and Addison Darcy (6-3, 260), the latter two getting time per injuries. Running back Isaiah Edwards (6-1, 210) returns with Dresyn Green (5-8, 160) with 1012 rush yards and QB/RB/WR Brady Dorner (6-0, 180) plus standout WR/DB Cohen Russell (5-8, 170, sr) who snagged 39 passes for 843 yards and 11 scores while rushing for 299 yards. He had 61 tackles from the secondary. He and DEs Nathan Lusk (6-3, 215, 69 tackles), Kevin Kurtzinger (6-2, 215, 45 stops), DT Sam Stoll (6-3, 245, 38 tackles), super soph SS Sam Snipe (6-1, 210) with 102 tackles, LBs Jim Manyak (5-11, 215, 83 tackles), Kyle Domico (5-8, 175, 56 tackles) and Joe Nastasi (5-11, 190, 29 tackles) are back. The secondary returns 4 including Dresyn Green with 30 tackles. As mentioned, the schedule is favorable playing Central Dauphin, Cumberland Valley and Harrisburg at State College. Or is it? Memorial Stadium is being renovated and not available until the Fall of 2020. The base bid calendar requires games to be played at a modified North Field or the South Track Facility.
Harrisburg (13-2) 6A finals rep Cougars have to be respected with Coach Cal Everett turning things around big time going 35-7 the last three years with HUGE offenses at 36, 47, 37ppg and defenses allowing 15, 11 and 13 (yr end avgs) the last three. They’ve sustained tremendous grad losses but the troops are believing and they look strong for the coming season. . The loss of Qb Kane Everson (2472p, 925r, 36Tds) is unmeasurable, but they do return RB/LBs Jahmir Plant (5-10, 190, 49 tackles), Harold O’Neal (6-0, 200, 110 tackles) and WR/DB Donte Kent (5-11, 179, 37/864p, 44 stops, 6 picks). Despite a few losses, the lines look good with a youth movement last year seeing sophomores OL/DL Nate Bruce (6-5, 300) and Lane Brannon (6-4, 305) start with freshman Tyshawn Black (5-11, 275). TE/DE standout Sa’Quan Carter-Barton (6-2, 230, 55 tackles) also returns. They have a decent core with many from 2nd units back after extensive pt. The big question is a quarterback replacing Everson. Winning another Mid Penn Commonwealth may not be in the cards this year graduating their stellar quarterback Kane Everson who made the O go! LBs Andre White and Jain Burney were highly instrumental to the success on that side as were their quick DEs Brian Yates and Dionte Nichols; all four graduated. Looks like a significant rebuild. The schedule opens at Coatesville (14-1), then at Bishop Hoban-OH (15-0, Div-2 champ) and at Cedar Cliff (10-3). Nothing like an easy start! It looks shaky and they could easily be 0-2 out the gate but do get Cumberland Valley, Chambersburg and Central Dauphin at home.
Central Dauphin (9-4) The coming season is full of questions, primarily at the quarterback position where Tyrese Fuller and Max Mosey (6-0, 170, soph) will battle it out; edge to Mosey. Juniors Daniel Ficca (5-10, 205, 36/114) and Timmy Smith (5-11, 185, jr, 36/150) are back at running back and linebacker with DE Amir Walton (6-1, 225) testing out at FB. He along with OL/DTs Bryce Thoman (6-5, 280), Marques Holten (6-0, 235/DE), standout OL/DE Cameron Sansoni (6-1, 230), LBs Smith and Ficca, Tyrese Fuller (6-3, 180) and Jacob Hicks (5-9, 185) plus WR/FS Nick Chimienti (6-0, 180, calls the D, lead receiver 39/599) will give them another strong defense to stabilize things until the offense jells. Senior defensive ends Amir Walton (6-1, 225), Cameron Sansoni (6-1, 230) and Marques Holten (6-0, 235) are arguably the best DEs in the mid-state and beyond. Shamilyn Joppy (6-1, 170, jr) and JJ Mitchem (6-0, 185, sr)….I think....will join starters Tyrese Fuller (6-3, 160, sr) and Chimienti in the secondary. The O-Line has some young talent and old hands this year that is definitely up to “Commonwealth Conference” standards for the long grind ahead; OT/DT Chad Layton (6-2, 275, sr), highy regarded OT/DT Kyle Yeager (6-5, 285, soph), Bryce Thoman (6-5, 280, sr), Blaise Heshler (6-4, 280, jr) and Ryan Hohensheit (6-5, 260, sr). DE Cameron Sansoni (6-1, 230,sr) is versatile to fill in anywhere on the line with a few juniors chomping at the bit for playing time. As always, give CD a quarterback and look out! But the schedule is typical Mid Penn tough, playing at Wilson (8-4), home to Berks Catholic (10-3) and at Manheim Township (10-2) to start things off.
Cumberland Valley (3-7)
Cumberland Valley will try to rebound from their first losing season since 2006 and only their third such occurrence in over 30 years. Despite a well-earned reputation as one of the top programs in the state, you didn’t need any head scratching to realize they just weren’t that good last year. Ok, the schedule was brutal but it always is. The difference being that last year saw all the bad boys (all having very good editions) line up on consecutive Fridays and Saturdays with arguably the most difficult opening slate in the state, beginning with Harrisburg-McDevitt (13-2, 21-48 loss), then three road games at Central York (8-3, 14-31), Coatesville (15-1, 19-35) and Central Dauphin (9-4, 7-37) before getting home for Harrisburg (14-2, 0-45). Add in a rebuilt program at Chambersburg (7-4, 14-28 loss) for an unheard of 0-6 start for the Eagles. This year’s squad should rebound from that with a D core of 8 returning starters including senior DLs Chase Myers, 6-1, 290) and Wyatt Claypool (6-2, 225). LB Derik Sauve, (6-0, 190, jr) is back with DE Anthony Fye (6-1, 225) and SS Max Dell’Anno (6-3, 200, sr). Jack Istvan (5-8, 165, sr), Gavin Conklin (5-9, 175, jr) and S Logan Ramper (6-2, 190, sr) fill out the secondary. The offense returns 4 starters at HB, SE, OL and TE. Both sides will miss TE/DE Stone Huffman (6-2, 225, 39 stops). They face the same schedule this year as last with the difference being their veteran defense and a number of those opponents rebuilding….plus a whole bunch of attitude.
Chambersburg (7-4) The Trojans have almost everyone back including Qb Brady Stumbaugh (89/178/1334, 50%, 105/368r) and Keyshawn Jones (5-9 185, sr) who rushed for 1422 yards, along with almost the entire defense. TE/WR Terrell Williams is back after missing most of last year (4th game on) with Kevin Lee (14/284) and speedster Tyeshawn Worrell who clocked a 10.64 in the 100 meter!! The line looks set with last year’s starters Tucker Eiker (5-10, 235), Wyatt Hull (6-0, 225), Jake Corwell (5-10, 200) and Brock Harmon (5-11, 260) back. They were a nice team last year, getting off to a 4-0 start and going 4-2 on the road. But ended the year with a gut wrenching 20-17 loss to Manheim Township (10-2) in a game where a 70-yd Td was called back late for an illegal formation……..late, on an illegal formation? They open this year with rival Greencastle-Antrim (2-8) at home then away vs York-Adams teams South Western (1-9) and Red Lion (8-3) then home to Altoona (3-7) who is again back in the Mid Penn. They should get off to a strong start before entering the maelstrom that is the Mid Penn Commonwealth, beginning with a home game with State College after Altoona.
Central Dauphin East (3-7)
Once again East High lost a quality athlete to transfer last year when quarterback Kane Everson went to Harrisburg High to light their fuse, all the way to the 6A state title game. Life in the big city! They survived, but barely, getting pretty beat up early facing Manheim Township, Archbishop Stepinac-NY (8-4) and Harrisburg at the top of the season. Put Kane in there and it’s a different season for East and especially Harrisburg. So they broke in two Qb last year, Shawn Brown (5-11, 150, sr, 28/46, 338, DB) and Jeremiah Green (5-11, 180, jr, 27/61, 474, FS) and return RB/DB Bryce Baker (6-0, 180, 99/737), RB/ILB Ty Evans (5-9, 195, 25/102), FB/OLB Isiak Ibraheem (6-1, 215), plus lineman standouts C/DT Logan Fleegal (6-4, 300), TE/DE Trey Wallace-Koons (6-5, 220) and highly regarded OT/DT Kyle Williams (6-4, 260, jr). A lot of people were used last year, trying to get it right allowing for a significant number of experienced returns this year including 286 tackles. Their first 3 are away at Manheim Township, Lower Dauphin and Archbishop Wood before coming home for the conference opener at Harrisburg. For those wanting a peek, they play Wood September 6th.

Mid Penn-Keystone

Cedar Cliff won their first conference title last year at 6-0 since sharing it with McDevitt in 2016. But the Colts are always right there, going 20-5 in conference action the last 4 years just behind McDevitt at 22-3. With Susquehanna Township flat lining the last 3 years at 10-9 (15-10, last 4) and Lower Dauphin at 14-10, it’s been a two horse race between well-established Bishop McDevitt and lesser known Cedar Cliff. Hershey, Mechanicsburg and Red Land bring up the rear at 5-20, 3-21 and 8-17.
Cedar Cliff (10-3, 5A) The task this year is to replace Qb Chris Dare’s 2110 yards (63%, 29/6) and all-everything Bobby Whalen (6-1, 175), one of the best athletes to come through the program in years. Whalen spelled Dare when nicked completing 10 of 16 passes after co-starting with him in 2017. He rushed for 407 yards on 63 carries while catching 58 passes for 946 yards! Defensively, he was everywhere, DE/LB/SS with 55 tackles. Combined, Dare and Whalen scored 58.9% of all their points on a team that scored 38ppg. Defensively, Donovan Ball (5-10, 210) with 105 tackles is a loss with Whalen, LB/OLs Justin Resto (6-1, 235, 57 stops), Isaiah Tirado (6-1, 235, 17) and 2 from the secondary. It was a decent D allowing 19ppg knowing some of their opponents were Gov. Mifflin, Cocalico, Harrisburg, Hollidaysburg, McDevitt, Exeter, Warwick and Manheim Central with a combined won/loss of 80-30. Pretty wicked group! OL’ers Ben Gregory (6-2, 220) and Dom Driscoll (6-2, 270) are gone but they’ve got some bodies back that should sustain them if they fill the QB position. The center piece of the attack especially early will be Jaheim Morris (5-10, 190, sr) who rushed for 1916 yards last year He’ll demand a lot of attention. Seniors OL/DT Al Rosado (5-11, 225, 38 tackles), OL/DL Anthony Jones (5-10, 240), Dalton Reynolds (6-0, 280) and soph Claude Godineaux (6-1, 285) will help here. Two return to the secondary with LBs Anthony Shires (6-2, 240), Ethan Rinehart (6-0, 205), star Kevin Lusk (6-2, 220, 49 tackles), Elijah Ikeda (6-10, 215, 30..hitter!) and Pedro Clinton (5-9, 185, 22). They open at Gov. Mifflin (7-5), then have 4 straight at homers to Cocalico 10-3, Harrisburg 13-3, Hollidaysburg 9-5 and McDevitt 12-2.
Bishop McDevitt (12-2, 4A) Last year’s shortfall makes you wonder what it’ll take to ever get over the hump and win another state title. They had a quarterback in Chase Diehl (6-0, 205, signed Duquesne) who completed 66% for 3744 yards with a 43 to 6 Td/Pick ratio. His top receivers Nazir Burnett (Syracuse) with 1746 yards on 78 passes and T’nyis Becker (ODU) with 1005 on 52 yards also graduate. CJ Reyes Diggs (Edinboro) graduated with 1606 yards rushing. OL/DL Logan O’Grady (6-2, 295), Carter Christopher (6-3, 285, 45 tackles), Bryce Barnes (6-0, 280, 37 tackles), DEs Tate Myers (6-0, 230, 81 tackles), Karson Martz (6-2, 190, 24 tackles) and Marquin McAuthor Melendez (6-0, 240, 51 tackles) are gone plus LB Dray Donley (6-0, 230, 45 tackles). The offense was their most productive at 43ppg since 2009. Hard figuring how that team lost to Cathedral by 41 points, making you think if they can’t do it with that group? Big question is at Qb (Lek Powell, Feyiseyo Oluleye?) and the lines, but they do return a good D core. McDevitt has to come back to the pack some this year but with Cedar Cliff also rebuilding it looks like a toss-up for conference honors.

Mid Penn-Capital

Middletown has owned the Capital in dominating fashion going undefeated while winning three consecutive titles (7-0 each year) for a 4 year conference slate of 26-2. Milton Hershey is second at 20-8 with Palmyra next at 17-11. East Pennsboro is 13-8 in 3 years with a 6-0 conference record in 2015 but in the MP-Colonial before moving to the Capital. Steelton Highspire slipped to 14-14 the last 4 with Camp Hill at 13-15. Boiling Springs and Trinity stagger in at 4-23 and 3-24 respectively.
Middletown (14-2, 3A)
The Blue Raiders will make noise with their great back Jose Lopez who rushed for 2368 (4458 career) yards last year after rushing for 1796 in 2017, as the Blue Raiders pursuit their 4th consecutive finals appearance. He also caught 14 passes for 191 yards. Quincy Reinnagel (5-10, 230, sr), Arthur Dash (5-11, 225, sr) and Collin Heffner (5-11, 225, sr) are on the line with Brock Welsh (6-3, 260, sr), Anthony Glory (6-3, 245, jr) and last year’s great freshman Tajae Brodie (6-4, 230) having to play somewhere. DE? OL/DT Cole Senior (6-0, 225) is gone after many honors with Joe Gusler (6-2, 220) and C/DL Ethan Miller (6-3, 250). DE Adonis Taveras (6-3, 225) and LBs Gage Radabaugh (5-8, 180) and Trayvon Joseph (6-0, 195) are gone taking a lot of athleticism with them. The 4 year run they’re on, going 49-8 follows a 5 year slog of 18-32 where they had one winning season.
Milton Hershey (9-3, 4A)
The Spartans are the “other” team in the Capital Conference that takes a back seat to Middletown but with only 2 losing seasons the last 17 years. With a 20-8 conference won-loss the last 4 years, they are second only to Middletown at 26-2. Then comes Palmyra 17-11, East Pennsboro 13-8, Steel High 14-14 and Camp Hill 13-15, trailed by Boiling Springs 4-23 and Trinity 3-24. The Rollers have been down the last 5 years but won back-to-back state titles in 2007 (13-3) and 2008 (16-0) and can’t be excluded when discussing area teams. Back to MH who had a good season but now face severe grad losses, losing key lineman in Stanford Maison (6-4, 300), Isaiah Morales (5-11, 275), and DLs Josiah Gibbs (5-10, 225) and Levi Wheager (6-0, 210, DE). LB Hunter Hanley and DB Chris Farnsworth are gone. The heart and soul of their offense Qb/LB Naeem Cross, Rbs Chiago Anyanwa, both +1000 yards, Hassan Kamara and Joseph Maisonet graduated. Seniors Clemente Ojinnaka (6-3, 220, DL) and DB/P Josh Parra (6-4, 210, may go LB) are back. Last year’s team averaged 33ppg while allowing 15; their best D in 14 years but not enough as evidenced by losses to Middletown 32-21 and Berks Catholic 49-21. Looks like a serious rebuild but they haven’t had a losing season since 2010.
Palmyra (8-3, 5A)
The Cougars were all over the place last year, winning their first 7 then going bottom up, finishing 1-3 with the one win being a limp effort against 1-9, AA Trinity, 14-13? The rest were bad losses to Milton Hershey 28-14, Middletown 42-6 and Warwick 64-0 in the postseason. 64 to nothing! For 2019, experienced Qb Stephen Lyons (6-1, 185, sr, 15/30/130) replaces Grant Haus (60%, 1325, 13/6, 463 rush). Rb Caleb Hawkins (1179) and Wr Sean Carter (580) plus Kyle Wasilewski (262) are gone, with Nick Morder (26/319) and Kasey Shughart (26/319) returning. They played everyone last year in an effort to shore up a sieve-like defense that was their downfall allowing 25ppg. The O was there at 26 a game but got no help from the other side. Interestingly, 468 tackles graduate. That looks like a big number until seeing 612 return! So they're loaded with considerable experience returning to both sides.

Mid Penn-Colonial

Waynesboro and Shippensburg have been the powers in this conference the last 4 years going 19-6 and 19-7 respectively. Northern’s Polar Bears are right there at 18-7 with Mifflin County at 10-9. East Pennsboro was 6-0 their only year in in 2015 followed by West Perry 9-10, Big Spring 7-18, Greencastle Antrim 5-20 and James Buchanan 0-14. Buchanan dropped out in 2017 going independent playing northern Maryland schools, Perryville, Brunswick, Clear Springs, Smithburg et al.
Shippensburg (10-2, 5A)
Defending Colonial champ Ship graduated their great back Adam Houser (260/1997) but return a lot of bodies including Qb/DB Zack Manning (5-11, 175, 826, 7/5), Rb/LB Jacob Loy (6-0, 190, 119/588) and Alex Sharrow (5-6, 160, 29/385) with TE/DE Nick Gustafson (6-5, 220, 21/383) and Wr/DB Isaiah Houser 5-10, 150, (8/188). The lines are in good shape with seniors Colton Musser (6-3, 220, LB), Kaden Burnett (6-1, 225), Noah Foust 6-0, 260, LB), Brandon Betz (6-2, 250), Rook Smith (5-1, 235) and junior Sean Hess (5-11, 260). The secondary looks set with Manning, Houser and CB Max Kalb (5-0, 160, jr). Key LBs are Noah Foust and Colton Musser. Bottom line, most of the defense returns. It’s wait and see for the Greyhounds who won a number of tight ones last year because of Adam Houser who fell 3 yards short of the 2000 rushing mark. He’ll be missed. But they have a pile of weapons back and real speed with 3 on the team from Ship’s state qualifying 4x100 team. The Greyhounds haven’t had a losing season since 2006.
Waynesboro (6-5, 5A)
The Indians have been a mid to lower mid-rung team for the last 6 years going 32-24. Right, big deal! But, they’re smiling in Waynesboro since this represents a tremendous turnaround from their +15 year drought of losing seasons! In fact, last year’ 6-5 record hides a team that could jump up and bite you as they did against Gettysburg (8-3, York Adams-2 champ) 21-16, West Perry (8-4 ) 43-40 and almost against Mifflin County (6-5), losing in double overtime 33-27….and conference winner Shippensburg, losing 28-20 in overtime. That was with modest production from the Qb who graduated. Jay Shaun Alverez (6-3, 180) passed for 958 yards (42% 9/9) and rushed for 613 more so he kept the chains moving often enough, as did Quentin Gaskill (787) and Brayden Bibbs (242). 3 other backs with 95 carries for 366 yards return with their primary receivers John Hoffman (19/437) and Adam Wentz (13/236) who is their primary back with 254 yards. So, they have 1642 rush yards to replace and a quarterback. The gains could be made up on the defensive side with nearly everyone back. They’ve got some bruisers back there with Ben Dewease (6-5, 325) the immovable object at DT and OT and Ethan Sunders (6-2, 260, 87 tackles, 12 sacks), Brandon Trujillo (6-0, 250, 59 tackles, jr), Daniel Toney (6-0, 255, 100 tackles), NG Xavier Rhyne (6-0, 210, 26 tackles) and DE Derec Urey (6-1, 195, 53 tackles). Also returning are LBs Carson McGregor (5-10, 170, 47 stops), Isaac Avery (5-10, 185, 30 tackles), Guy Sullivan (5-9, 190, 90 tackles) with Hayden Baer, Adam Wentz and Logan Smith to the secondary with 112, 89 and 78 tackles respectively. They open at Red Land then home to Red Lion before a test at Gettysburg then home again vs Shippensburg.
West Perry (8-4, 4A)
The Mustangs had a deceptively good team last year with an explosive offense scoring 36ppt behind two 1000 yard rushers, managed by a savvy QB in Kenyon Johnson (5-11, 180, sr) who kept opposing defenses guessing. At 57%, he threw good enough to keep defenses off balance knowing they had to commit to a keeper, pass or pitch with him scampering for 1130 yards on 138 carries and Terrance Quaker picking up another 1206 yards. The Qb also passed for 985 yards and is back. The D returns what looks like 4 starters and at least 2 pt players. A 3 point loss to Waynesboro and a 1 point loss to Mifflin County separated them from a 10-2 campaign.

Mid State Preseason Report: District 3, Lancaster-Lebanon, Sections 1, 2, 3

Mid State Preseason Report: District 3, Lancaster-Lebanon, Sections 1, 2, 3

Lancaster Lebanon-Section 1
Warwick (9-3, 5A)
Expectations are sky high in Lititz with the return of junior gunslinger Joey McCracken who completed 59% for 1974 yards with a 27/3 Td-Pick ratio. Incredibly, this is after co-starting with the graduated Adams Ricketts who threw for another 1344 yards with a 62% completion rate! It was and is a full on aerial assault taking on these guys with super quick Trey Glass snagging 74 throws for 1342 (school single season record) yards and Conor Adams with 12 for 241 yards. Glass went down with a knee at Cedar Cliff last season with his status unknown for the opener. Rb Sean Bedessa (45/253) can motor but Nick Fucci’s 898 rushing yards and 266 receiving yards will be missed. But the larger loss is TE/DT Hayden Rucci (6-5, 250, 30/645, 28 tackles), off to Wisconsin and T/DT Nick Coomer (6-4, 285, 50 tackles) to Delaware. That was a lot of fire power and stopping power up front. . The O-Line returns Hayden Benner (6-2, 240), Hunter Diebler (6-0, 230) and All-Everything Nolan Rucci (6-8, 280, jr) playing both ways. Everyone wants him including Pitt, PSU, MSU, Syra, VaTech, etc, etc. Most of the defense returns with DB Justin Gerhart grabbing 6 picks where 3 of 4 return plus LBs Austin Bufis (6-0, 195), Jonathan Forbes (6-0, 210) and David Hanesko (5-10, 190) with Thatcher Miller (6-3, 210) at DE. It’s scary thinking what this group is capable of offensively knowing they averaged 43ppg each of the last two year! As noteworthy is their recent penchant for defense, allowing an eye catching 12ppg last year. All this with a schedule that included games at Manheim Central (14-1), a 27-20 loss, and Manheim Township (10-2) a 28-20 loss, homers to Wilson (8-4) who they stuffed 38-12 and the playoff win vs Palmyra (8-3) 64-0 before losing at Cedar Cliff (10-3) 33-23. They broke ground last year going two deep in the postseason which will serve as tonic this year for an even deeper run. So long as Trey Glass is back and healthy.
Wilson (8-4) After not having more than two losses in a season from 2008 through 2016, going 97-12 in the process, Wilson’s back-to-back 8-4 campaigns are out of character for one of the top programs in the state. They’ve been a power for years, but not at the level coach Doug Dahms achieved in his 13 years, garnering 145 wins against 28 losses. Playing in the LL-1 has its challenges (Manheim Township, Warwick, Hempfield) especially with the recently mandated cross over games against Manheim Central plus non-conference games against Spring Ford, Central Dauphin and another Reading power and rival, Governor Mifflin. 2018’s team was sluggish by their standards, averaging 26ppg, the lowest year ending average since 2007. Defensively, they’ve been well off their averages from 2016 through last year allowinged on average 20, 19 and 18 a game. By Bulldog standards, quarterbacking was an issue with Anthony Futrick completing only 54% of passes for 1494 years with a 14/9 Td-Pick ratio. This is pop gun stuff for Wilson that was masked to a degree with a decent rushing attack spearheaded by Elijah Morales and Avanti Lockhard at 1125 and 407 yards respectively, and Coach Dahms spreading the ball around to five primary receivers getting at least 21 receptions each. That, combined with an aggressive not great defense got them past Governor Mifflin, Spring Ford, Manheim Township, Hempfield and Red Lion, but not Warwick (9-3) 38-12, Central Dauphin (9-4) 23-7 and Harrisburg (13-2) 36-12. Coach played a lot of young talent last year giving them a solid nucleus on defense (8 return) and the lines with the priority in 2019 being the quarterback. 7 are back on offense. RB Avanti Lockhart (6-2, 205, 64/462, sr, recovered) is back with many receivers; Brady Gibble (21/446), Troy Corson, Matt Fry (20/229). The lines look good with All-League Nate Keller (6-0, 275) back plus OL/DL Jean Ventura (5-9, 220), OL/DL Anthony Koper (6-0, 240) and C/DL Adam Vanino (6-1, 255). But they’ll miss Ryan Silvious (6-5. 260). Also returning to the D are RB/LB Lockhart (6-0, 210, 40 stops), OLB Nate Hoekstra (6-0, 200, 62 tackles) and 3 who started as sophomores in DT Jeff Colacin (5-10, 255, 25 stops), Ethan Capitano (5-11, 195, 22 stops) and Adrian Santana (6-0, 215, 26 tackles). The secondary returns at least 2 starters, Corson and Fry. At Qb no one has separated through the spring with juniors Kaleb Brown (6-1, 175), Ryan Moseman (6-1, 180) and senior Nick Williams 5-10, 180 battling. K Jack Wagner and P Kaleb Brown return. You’ll know much about the district power structure with the Bulldogs opening at home to Central Dauphin then away at Governor Mifflin and Spring Ford before returning home for Manheim Central. Phew!
Manheim Township (10-2) Almost everyone returns meaning the Blue Streaks are primed for a significant run in the LL and Districts, making it a 3 horse race with always favored Wilson and upstart Warwick. This is based on last year’s team beating Central Dauphin (9-4), Cocalico (10-3), Warwick (9-3) and Chambersburg (7-4) before falling to CD in the rematch. Lost to Wilson (8-4) in regular season 16-14. Last year’s team averaged 27ppg while allowing 14, against a legit schedule. But, there are no favors with this year’s schedule playing Cocalico, Wilson and Warwick on the road. A few commits are Qb Harrison Kirk (Colgate), TE/DE Ben Mann (Yale) and DB John Engle (Lafayette). Kirk completed 161 of 283 (57%) last year for 2300 yards with a 19/8 ratio. Senior running back Jaden Floyd (154/729) is back with receiver Brett Benjamin (37/595) who is also a solid DB and kick returner with Mickey Stokes snagging 19 for 281 yards. Last year’s freshman Anthony Ivey (6-1, 180) wowed em good with 17 catches for 265 yards until going down but is expected back. He has already received offers from WV, Va Tech, Marshall, etc. The defense will be anchored by brothers LBs Josh and Sam Emge, Tyler Kurtz and OG/DT Justin Herr (5-11, 220), OT/DT Grayson Kuhns (6-1, 230) and TE/DE Ben Mann (6-1, 205) plus DB Jon Engle and Matt Mikulka who had 7 picks last year. Coach Mark Evans is building a program at Township entering his 7th season with a 48-24 record.
Cedar Crest (5-5)
Most people don’t realize that Cedar Crest use to play serious football, putting good stuff on the field consistently and as recently as the last 90s and early 00s under Coach Gene “Spike” Fuhrman. Their new coach Rob Wildasin seems cut from the same cloth; tough, old school, in a younger form. He’s been there since 2014, going 27- 25 (19-12 last 3) in the challenging Lancaster-Lebanon League. This is notable improvement from a program that went 16-64 the previous 8 years. Last year’s highlight was beating city rival Lebanon High in the Cedar Bowl 42-19 and a close call loss to Manheim Township in overtime, 16-10. The quest this season is replacing Section One’s 1st team quarterback Logan Horn who passed for 1398 yards while rushing for 550 with 18 Tds. Chris Danz is projected to replace him with great help from Rb Tyler Cruz ( 5-10, 195, 131/658), OT T.J. Moore (6-0, 225), C/DT Andrew Foltz (5-9, 240), TE/DE Eric Wawrzniak (6-3, 200), OT/DE Cade Rambleer (6-1, 215) and OG/DT Owen Kreider (6-0, 240). Chris Rios (5-10, 180) is back at WR/S after snagging 16 for 224 yards with FL/SS Cole Miller (6-1, 175) back with 17 receptions for 367 yards. Last year’s standout freshman Aadyn Richards (5-9, 185) is back at MLB. With a back-loaded schedule playing Warwick, Township and Wilson the second half of the season, look for the Falcons to get off to a good start at home their first two games. It all begins against city rival Lebanon in the annual Cedar Bowl.
Hempfield (5-6)
When most people think about the LL-1, they usually think about Wilson and Manheim Township. Rightly so with Wilson going 25-2 the last 4 years in conference play while Township went 25-2. It may surprise some to know that Hempfield has gone a respectable 17-10 over that same stretch. So don’t be surprised if the Black Knights surprise a few people this year despite heavy grad losses knowing they return senior Qb Colin Peters (6-1, 170) after throwing for 1459 yards (54%, 12/9) and rushing for 428 yards. And it’s always good seeing the center back, Aiden Power (6-1, 245, jr). Receiver/LB Jackson Shand (6-5, 210, 21/212) and running back Luke Miller (22/144r, 17/142p) will try to replace Matt Hueston’s 696 rush yards and Mike Kurt’s 699. Darien Ressler is another loss with 42 receptions for 778 yards. So they’ll have to step it up from last year’s edition that lost to Manheim Central, Warwick, Wilson, Township and Harrisburg by a combined score of 171 to 36. Clearly the D is an issue as is rebuilding the O-Line that lost one of the better linemen in the league in Riley Good (6-3, 220). Qb Peters will likely be looking for 6-5 Jackson Shand to loosen things up for the new backs and OL. Coach Ron Zeiber is in his 9th year with a 48-41 record.

Lancaster Lebanon-Section 2
Manheim Central (14-1, 5A)

Manheim Central rolled out 13 straight until losing to Penn Hills 36-31 in the 5A state title game last year. Excepting Warwick and Wilson from the well regarded Lancaster-Lebanon Section One, they breezed through the schedule, winning by an average score of 42-13 until Penn Hills. For the second straight year they made a strong run, having lost to Gateway 31-28 the year before in the semifinal. 5th year head coach Dave Hahn has it going with a 48-7 won loss. This year looks to be another in a long line of strong seasons with the return of quarterback Evan Simon (Rutgers) after passing for 2753 yards and rushing for 661. Top receiver Colby Wagner returns after snagging 26 for 832 yards with his brother Ben who caught 22 for 449 yards. TE/DE Jake Martin (5-11, 190) is back. Tyler Flick (all-time rusher 3913) is gone along with his 1831 rush yards plus wide-out Will Rivers’ 708 yards on 33 receptions. The line needs rebuilt, graduating Cayden Warner (5-10, 250,), Tyler Dougherty (5-10, 295), Brett Wolgemuth (6-1, 260) and Josh Painter (6-0, 280). LT/DL Troy Kolk (5-11, 225, 78 tackles) returns With DEs Jake Harbach (5-9, 215) and Tyler Hartl (6-1, 190), plus two to the secondary and 3 LBs. With 25 LL-Section titles and 18 district titles in 22 appearances, you know they’ll make their presence felt once again in the district, perhaps beyond.
Cocalico (10-3, 5A)
With a record of 87-37 (71%) the last ten years and a 22-6 mark the last 4 in conference action, the Eagles are the only credible conference threat to Manheim Central (25-2 in LL-2 games) in the LL-2. Coach Dave Gingrich is entering his 16th season at the helm with a 119 and 57 record running that wicked Veer Flex-Bone of his. They had an exciting team last year that got your attention, opening with wins against Conrad Weiser (9-3) 21-13, Cedar Cliff (10-3) 31-21 and Governor Mifflin (7-5) 35-21. Weiser’s Scouts were a veteran team while explosive Cedar Cliff went on to beat McDevitt (12-2) 50-43, Exeter (6-5) 50-6 and Warwick (9-3) 33-23 before losing to Manheim Central. Cocalico lost to Manheim Township (10-2) 36-24 and Manheim Central (14-1) 41-23, before blowing out the next six by an average score of 51-17 including York High’s Bearcats (11-2) 61-35 before losing in the rematch to Manheim Central 48-14. For 2019 look for them to get off to another good start with the return of most of their offense, particularly Qb Noah Palm (New Hampshire) who rushed for 1310 yards and passed for 773 more with Ronald Zalm returning to one of the running back positions after rushing for 636 yards on 73 carries and catching 11 passes for 272 yards. A big loss is FB/MLB Garrett Longenecker (key in the Flex) who rushed for 1259 yards while being their #2 tackler with 107. Good luck replacing that! #1 tackler Cody Shay (6-1, 215, sr) proved his durability with 133 stops and will likely get first shot at that. And don’t forget Qb Palm with 100 tackles from his Safety position. Another concern is replacing four studs upfront; LT Colin Hall (6-0, 280), RG/DT Josh Hoover (6-0, 240, 36 tackles), C Chase Ochs (6-2, 240) and RT/DT Tristan Motter (6-3, 290, 39 tackles). But their top lineman, LG/DT Brock Gingrich (6-3, 280. 68 tackles) returns. Six starters return to the defense that needs to tighten up from last year’s 23ppg yield. Like to see them with more balance but they should be solid with a good core on offense to again challenge for Section-2 honors and another high seed in the postseason.

Lancaster Lebanon Section-3
Lancaster Catholic (10-1, 3A)

The Crusaders are coached by Todd Mealy (former star at McDevitt) who had unheard of success a few years ago at Penn Manor of the LL-1, going 56-35 from 2007 through 2014. At LC he replaced a legend when Bruce Harbach retired after his 16th season (at LC) with a 138-54 record, winning 2A state titles in 2009 (15-1) and 2011 (16-0). Back to Mealy, pure and simple the man knows how to coach, guiding Catholic to an undefeated regular season in his first season before losing to Bermudian Springs (9-4) 20-10 in last year’s post season opening round. They’ll probably tear things up again this year with 3 year starter Gavin Sullivan back (6-2, 165, sr, 888p, 63%, 121/604r), Rbs Jeff Harley (80/928) and Nevin Roman (35/274) with FB Alex Cruz (6-2, 205, 34/338) again blasting holes. 3 OL’ers return in OT/DT Liam Besecker (6-4, 230) and OG/DT Trey Wells (6-5, 280) with all everything Andrew Miklos (6-5, 230) playing almost any position especially on defense, and already signed with Delaware. With a lot of last year’s skill back they’ll probably match last year’s performance offensively where they averaged 34ppg. The defense was one of the best in south central PA allowing a meager 9ppg. Look for big strides in year two of the Todd Mealy regime as they challenge Middletown for district supremacy.
