Mid State Preseason Report: District 3, Berks and York-Adams teams.

Berks Inter County Conference, Section 1
Governor Mifflin (7-5, 5A)

Governor Mifflin finished with a flurry last year, setting the stage for real improvement this year with a solid core of returning players. Expectations are always high at a power like GM (104-39 since 2006), perhaps more so this year with many other powers going through a rebuild similar to the one GM experienced last year. Last year’s young group struggled early losing to Cedar Cliff (10-3) 30-0, Wilson (8-4) 42-28 and Cocalico (10-3) 35-21, before finishing on a 7-2 run with losses to Conrad Weiser (9-3, Berks Cty-1 champ) 17-7 and 5A runner-up Manheim Central (14-1) 51-14. The only win of note was Exeter (6-5) 34-17. Starting at quarterback this year should be last year’s sophomore Kolby Reese (5-11, 175). Soph standout Nick Singleton (5-11, 185, 1045 yards, offers from Pitt, PSU) returns at tailback with Jaden Quilles (5-8, 175, sr). They’ll miss lineman Jordan Espinosa (5-11, 230), Sam Mueller (6-1, 240) and Cooper Henry (5-10, 245) but return promising Dominic Sheidy (6-2, 260, jr), C/NG Steve VanPelt (6-2, 220, sr) and Gian Diaz (5-9, 210, sr). Another standout is at linebacker in Cam’Ron Stewart (6-4, 225, jr). He’s a load! This year’s slate mimics last year’s except that Cedar Cliff (opener) followed by Wilson, play them in Shillington as does Exeter. Look for a significant turnaround this year with the Mustangs making major impact in District 3’s 5A Classification. Watch these Mustangs!
Conrad Weiser (9-3, 4A)
Conrad Weiser is that other team from the Berks Inter County Football Conference-Section One. Like so many quality programs across the state, they languish in the long shadow of another whose success is such a constant, in this case, Governor Mifflin, that they can go unnoticed, unendingly. You’d think a 12 year run of 95-48 might stand out more. Having said that, you got to beat these guys! And that’s what the Scouts did last year at Governor Mifflin winning 17-7. The win secured the conference title at 7-0, edging the Mustangs 6-1 and Exeter 5-2. This year’s edition has to replace Qb Alex MacKenzie who was a force passing for 963 yards, rushing for 733 (#1 runner) and an All-Conference selection in the secondary with 38 tackles. Lead receivers Gio Pacheco (DE, 6-4, 195, 24/483, 57 tackles), C, OL/DL/TE-10/141, RB-32/167, Jared Sadowski (6-2, 225, 49 tackles) and OG Brenner Redcay (5-8, 205) plus All-Conf Aidan Kreitz linebacker with 65 stops graduated. But their other backs return in Dalton Moyer (118/562r, 10/83p), Owen Dautrich (95/332r, 10/118p) and CJ Civello (24/140, 3/30). The line misses a few but returns All-Conf tackle Adam Kase (6-2, 260, sr) and All-Conf PK/P Matt Noll. The D returns 2 to the secondary, LBs Matt Pauley (5-11, 170) and FB/LB Josh Nihart (5-9, 190), DE/DT Josh Pichler (6-0, 210) and Kase at DT. With last year’s success comes this year’s reality of having the target on your back. They open at home with their neighbor to the south (10 miles) against tough as nails Cocalico who edged them last year 21-13 in Denver.
Exeter Township (6-5, 5A)
Returns good numbers with experienced QB Colin Payne (29/3/413, 4/3, soph) spelling graduated Kolby Haag (1648, 64%, 16/2), with most of their backs including Jeremiah Nixon (176/920, 9/184, sr), and Alex Javier (22/190, 35/708, sr), their principal receiver, along with receiver Devon Flores (42/504, sr). Lost good backers, notably LB/SS Matt Feeney (6-1, 230, 86 tackles), Mike Stout (6-0, 205, 51 tackles) and Riley Knapp (5-8, 195, 42 tackles) and a few on the lines, especially Mike McNish (6-2, 285, 28 tackles) and David Filippello (6-4, 245, 21 stops). Last year’s team couldn’t beat the quality on their schedule losing to Berks Catholic (10-3), Spring Ford (8-3), Weiser (9-3), Gov Mifflin (7-5) and Cedar Cliff (10-3). They open with Berks Catholic.

Berks Section 2
Berks Catholic (10-3, 4A)

Berks Catholic had some impressive games last year, getting edged by Central Dauphin 7-0, beating McDonogh 14-13 then losing to Malvern Prep 42-32 before losing in the district final to McDevitt 41-31. For the coming season, key players like quarterback Terrance Derr (1243, 56%, 17/4) and FB/LB/DL Brandon George (959 rushing) graduated. In fact, 17 starters graduated. But they return Abdul MacFoy (227/1013, All-State, 4.4 speed) who is a monster in the open field….and some impressive sophomores of last year, particularly Colby Newton (5-8, 190, sr, 27/295 rushing) and Nolan Larkin (5-10, 165, 21/145). Steven Rose (126/814, sr) transferred in from Exeter Township but was deemed ineligible. They’ll get traction behind a line (starters, co-starters) that returns Andrew Chiarelli (6-2, 270), Jackson Gofus (6-3, 270) and Jase Fowler (5-11, 215). It’s a war for the Qb spot between Schuylkill Valley transfer Brad Hoffman, Jack Burke (5-10, 165, sr) and Ryan Madrak (6-1, 185, jr). Hoffman (6-1, 190) got time last year at SV as a freshman completing 19/47 for 187 yards, 2/1 ratio, 66 rushing on 17 carries. With the D shortages he probably projects to SS, or LB per size; OLB per quickness. The D is almost a total wipeout losing 645 tackles while returning 226. DLs Mark McFadden (6-2, 230, sr), James Woodcock (6-2, 230, jr) and Luke Hughes (6-1, 195, jr) are penciled in with linebackers Victor Viera (55-9, 180, jr), CJ Carwll (5-11, 195, sr, 71 stops) and Newton back plus Muhlenberg transfer Justin Smalls. Coach says they have great speed on offense, explosive, with the question being the defense. It’s BC, and with a record of 99-18 since their inception you know they’ll be there. And they can hang with the best, recently stepping up in class to play teams like CD, Exeter, McDonogh and Malvern Prep, making them nearly unbeatable in conference action and a tough out in the post season.

York Adams-1

Exciting football here in the York area featuring explosive offenses and high scoring games. Last year saw Red Lion and York deadlocked at 6-1, followed by Central York in 2nd at 5-2. Dallastown and Northeastern came in 3rd at 4-3.
Red Lion (8-3)
Last year’s team couldn’t beat “quality” losing to Chambersburg 25-19 and Wilson 36-0 (post season) after running through the YAIAA with relative ease. For this season, they lost a solid quarterback in Zach Mentzer (1785, 21/3) and their primary running backs from a team that scored 31ppg. That may be compounded with heavy D losses making it look like a serious rebuild. But an opening slate of McCaskey and Waynesboro could offer a 2-0 start before their home opener with rejuvenated Chambersburg.
York High-William Penn (11-2, 5A)
Super explosive team last year that averaged 47ppg behind the talents of receiver Rob Rideout and running back Dayjure Stewart who rushed for 3091 yards last year. The Bearcats had little trouble with most YAIAA teams excepting the 21-20 loss at Red Lion. Then came Cocalico’s Veer in the postseason and that was all she wrote where they went down hard, losing 61-35. They’ve got some bodies but nothing like Stewart and Rideout for the opener at Pittsburgh Central Catholic where they will likely get swamped.
Central York (8-3)
At 38ppg, they were a load especially with Cade Pribula under center throwing for 2725 yards with a 30/7 Td-Pick ratio. He’s gone, but brother Beau (6-2, 200, jr) is right there waiting to take over. Wide out Taylor Wright-Rawls (33/873) is back but 3 other leading receivers are gone plus their top 3 running backs. They have some soul searching to do after last year’s 8-1 start crumbled with a 0-2 finish, losing to York 54-14 and Central Dauphin 49-21. Defenses allowing 27ppg will do that. I can tell you their second game of the year will be a hard one under the lights in Mechanicsburg taking on Cumberland Valley in their home opener looking for payback after last year’s 31-14 defeat.
Dallastown (5-5)
The Wildcats were an exciting bunch last year with stellar back Nyzair Smith running all over everyone to the tune of 1988 yards. Qb Jordan Cook only passed for 568 yards (47%, 3/8) but rushed for 1025 yards. Both he and Smith graduated with two of their top three receivers. At 26ppg, the team was never about defense and may not improve on that with huge grad losses on that side. Dtown was an exciting bunch last year with Smith and Cook but just couldn’t finish, losing to Hempfield 25-19, Central York 35-28 and Red Lion 17-10.
Northeastern (5-6, 5A)
Bobcats return a lot of firepower with most of the skill back on the O side; Zach Sanderson (6-4, 210, jr) who completed 47% for 1208 yards (9/5 ratio) on a young team, Rb Manny Capo (5-11, 180, jr) with 864 yards on 162 carries (6/18 receiving), and senior wide outs Jordan Lagana (5-9, 160, 26/538) and Kaden Hamilton (6-0, 160, 12/184). They had difficulty getting any kind of rhythm with so young a group plus having to face explosive offenses on a weekly basis in the York-Adams. But by mid-year, they were upsetting conference co-champ Red Lion 23-16 followed by narrow losses to York 32-28 and Shippensburg (10-2) 6-0 in the playoffs. All this followed a 0-2 start losing to Solanco and Carlisle. Nice bounce for the young team! Maybe the Bobcats grow into Wildcats this year.

Mid State Preseason Report: District 4, 6, 9.

Mid State Preseason Report: District 4, 6, 9.

Here are some game and player stats, grads & returns of teams that should make an impact this season from Districts 3, 4, 5 (no teams listed), 6 and 9. All are 6A unless otherwise noted with info gathered from the obvious sources plus school and team websites, newspapers, personal notes and records. Enjoy..!..and as always feel free to jump in or on. Let the games begin!

District 4:
Southern Columbia (16-0, 2A)

Like St. Joseph’s Prep and Downingtown West, and to a lesser degree State High and Manheim Central, they return a pile of starters for 2019. While Qb Stone Hollenback is gone after completing 64% for 1737 yards with a 28/4 Td/Pick ratio, their #2 is back in Preston Zachman (6-2, 205, 29/44/597, 66%, 8/1 ratio), who stepped in for Hollenback who missed almost half the year. All the backfield returns; Gaige Garcia (5-10, 210, 205/2042, 13/284 pass yards), his younger brother Gavin Garcia (5-8, 165, 101/ 1179, 6/139 pass yards), Ty Roadarmel (5-11, 190, 74/417) and super receiver Julian Fleming (6-3, 210, 78/1524) who also had a 41 punting average. Two starting lineman return in OL/DL Lear Quinton (6-2, 220), OL/DL Cole Schankweiler (6-0, 280), two to the secondary and quality senior linebackersCal Halladay (6-1, 190, 131 tackles) and Max Tiller (6-0, 190, 123 tackles) plus Wade Kerstetter (5-11, 180, 74 tackles), their outstanding sophomore backer of last year. Unless another Double-A rises to the occasion, it looks like Southern will be the strong favorite to snag yet another state title.
Mount Carmel (10-3, 2A)
After a strong 2018 campaign, the Red Tornadoes appear ready for another successful season that may see them as a threat to Southern Columbia’s historic dominance of 2A. They lose a few lineman, notably OL/DT Zack Artman (6-0, 270) and Wm. Anderson (6-2, 275) plus DE Mike Hood (6-0, 210, 66 stops), Rb/LB John Ayres (155/1358, 76 tackles) and DBs Avery Demko (32 stops) and Tanner Karycki (50 stops) who were stand-outs. Otherwise, almost everyone returns including over 550 tackles from a group that allowed 15ppg. Qb Tom Reisinger (6-3, 215, 5-10, 180, sr, 1468, 53%, 17/8) is back with running back Shane Weidner (126/930r, 21/320p) and 5 other backs with 133 carries for 902 yards. TE/OLB Jack Chapman (6-3, 220, sr, 30/612, 94 tackles) is back with OT/DT Colin Herb (6-1, 275, sr), C/DT Brad Shurock (6-2, 250, sr), OG/DL Conner Krakowski (5-11, 210, sr) et al to name a few. In a word, they’re loaded. Last year’s team lost twice to Southern Columbia, 41-7 then 39-14 in the postseason, with a loss to North Schuylkill (11-2) 33-21 in between. Southern looks strong again albeit with some significant losses. But we’ll know early in game #2 whether MCA has closed the wide gulf between the two. The schedule is challenging, opening at Central Columbia (7-4), then SCA before tackling Lewisburg (7-5), a strong looking Jersey Shore (7-6) team then a road trip to the always powerful North Schuylkill (11-2) Spartans.
Jersey Shore (7-6, 4A)
There could be some very exciting football out of the Heartland Conference this year with so many teams playing a ton of youth last year. The Bulldogs were one of them. With 7 back on each side after facing a tough slate, they look ready to make significant improvement from last year’s 7-6 group that suffered a number of narrow losses, losing to Bellefonte (9-3, 4A) 17-14, Bald Eagle (11-3, 3A) 24-23 and Pottsgrove (12-2, 4A) in the postseason 14-10. This, after winning District 4 with that young team. Nice! Like MCA, nearly everyone is back including QB Tanner Lorson (6-2, 190, sr, 1694, 48%, 14/9, 308rush), their 3 primary runners (Malicky, Seacrest, K. Tomb) with 378 carries netting 1989 yards and 3 receivers with 644 yards on 48 receptions. They’ve had success the last 5 years going 43-18 and look ready to build on that. The schedule is no joke, opening at D6’s Bellefonte (9-3, 4A), home to Selinsgrove then trips to Montoursville (11-3, 3A) and Mount Carmel. Upper tier 4A Mountain Conference teams (Clearfield 6-0, Bellefonte 5-0, Bald Eagle 5-1..3A) are tough at home, meaning JS faces a real challenge getting past Bellefonte in the opener.
Selinsgrove (5-7, 4A)
Selinsgrove had a rare losing season, their second in over 30 years going 5-7. In what seems to be a trend with some of the smaller schools in the mid-state, definitely Heartland Conference schools, they’ve gone to underclassmen more often than not putting a pile of youth on the field last year. Smaller rosters? 3 sophomores and 3 freshman had significant pt last year with 3 sophs starting on defense and 1 frosh. The starting Qb Dan Shoch (6-3, 210) was a freshman! Selinsgrove is long established as a power in the state, one that doesn’t have to play freshman at such key positions. Their record from 2003 to 2018 is 154-56 with a 3A state title in 2009, ending with wins against Allentown Central Catholic (12-2) 31-10, Archbishop Wood (9-3) 28-0 and Manheim Central (15-1) 10-7. Knowing that, the youth movement is possibly a reflection of superior talent, however young. As shown above, the Seals are a program! With most of last year’s team returning, Qb Shoch will be throwing and handing off to numerous experienced players, namely running backs Dean Hollenbach (5-7, 180, sr, 67/311) and Nate Schon (6-0, 220, jr, 74/456) and receivers Josh Nylund (5-7, 160, sr, 36/470) and Wyatt Metzger (6-0, 195, sr, 17/22). The D will be led by LBs Miciah Showers (5-10. 210, sr, 85 tackles), Ryan Aument (6-0, 200, jr, 83 stops), Nick Sheaffer (6-2, 215, sr, 68 tackles), SS Teague Hoover (5-10, 150, soph, 62 tackles), LBs Nate Schon (6-0, 220, sr, 59 stops) and Coy Bastian (6-0, 180, jr, 42 stops), plus DE Wyatt Metzger (6-0, 200, sr, 28 stops) and CB Josh Nylund (5-7, 160, sr, 27 tackles). The home opener vs Lewisburg gets it going then Jersey Shore away and Southern Columbia home.
Others
Danville (10-3, 3A)

Looks like the Ironmen are going to have another powerful line and team with big bodies up front and Kayden Riley (6-1, 175, sr) back under center where he threw for 2550 yards with a 22/11 ratio and 57% completion rate. His primary receivers are back (3 with 133 receptions for 710yds) as they rebuild the defense that graduated 563 tackles from a unit that allowed 18ppg. Will say the 32-0 no-show vs Montoursville (11-3) in the 1st round is puzzling, after beating them 52-26 mid-season. But they’re proven winners with an 82-38 record the last 10 years.
Central Columbia (7-4, 3A)
Young team last year that came close at Mount Carmel, losing 21-13 but showed their youth after beating Lewisburg in the regular season 42-16, by losing to them in the playoffs first round, 7-6. Played 5 juniors, 5 sophs and a frosh at times last year hoping for dividends this year. Both sophomore Qbs are back in Trey Devlin (6-0, 185, transferred?) and Garrett McNellis (6-2, 180), dueling it out. 7 players received All-Conference 1st, 2nd or HM awards. They scored 31ppg last year and allowed 19. Let’s see how they do in their opener at home vs Mount Carmel.

District 6
State College….
see Mid Penn Commonwealth.
Hollidaysburg (9-5, 5A)
Looks like a serious rebuild on both sides but especially on offense graduating a lot of production in Brady Waters at quarterback. He was integral to the offense last year, throwing for 1679 yards (56%, 18/12) while rushing for another 1114 yards. Rb/LB Nate Fisher (66 tackles) also grad with 938 yards and 13 receptions with their 2 leading receivers; Jacob Sensenig with 540 on 34 catches, Austin Weakland on 20 receptions for 217 yards. WR/DB Bryce Martellaci (6-1, 165, jr, 16/189) and DeShawn Moss (6-1, 185, jr, 10/153) are back. Powerful Hunter Barr (6-0, 220, sr) returns as the featured back after rushing for 740 yards and catching 13 passes for 144 yards. He was #3 tackling with 83, behind cornerback DJ Heim (5-9, 165, sr) with 86 who also returns. Hunter Gibons (6-1, 200, sr, 18) and Ian Dipangrazio (5-11, 195, 17) are also back after getting time at linebacker where they return considerable experience. The secondary returns experience while the lines see the return of senior starters and 2nd unit personnel Jaren Dick (5-11, 240), Michael Scarpelli (5-10, 215, sr) and Nate Bettwy (6-0, 220, sr), plus junior Gavin Amick (6-0, 210). Last year’s schedule afforded little time for back-ups under center playing State College 12-2, Mifflin County 6-5, Cedar Cliff 10-3, Fort Hill-MD 13-0 (won another 1A title) and Archbishop Wood 9-4, making that the priority for 2019. The schedule mimics last year’s opening with district foes Altoona, Mifflin County and State College before Cedar Cliff and Fort Hill.
Bellefonte (9-3, 4A)
Has some good moving parts returning CJ Funk (6-0, 215, sr) and his 1475 yards rushing (20 Tds), speedster Mason Grey (5-8, 170, 248yds), C/DE Julian Emel (6-0, 240) and a QB/OLB being talked up on Media Day in Ethan Rossman (6-3, 190, sr), said to have a rocket of an arm. He’ll throw to multiple receivers with 730 yards in receptions of 1158 returning. And the ground game is in great hands with Funk and Grey (above) plus others totaling 2299 rush yards returning of last year’s 3112 total. Seniors JD Besch (6-2, 270), Logan Thompson (6-0, 265) and Andrew Hollars (6-4, 280) are back on the lines. 287 tackles return with 244 graduating in 5 starters. Excepting the Penns Valley upset, Bellefonte rolled through last year’s schedule with other losses to and the excellent Clearfield (12-1) team, twice, by the same 49-21 score. If they can past Jersey Shore they could make a real run with a very promising schedule.

District 9
Clearfield (12-1, 4A)

Clearfield graduated their best offense ever that churned out 44ppg with a pounding running game and an excellent quarterback. Caleb Freeman rushed for 1014 yards while wide out Taye Lynch had 45 receptions for 996 yards. Record setting quarterback Isaac Rumery (6-0, 190) threw for 2526 yards at a 69% completion rate with a 26/5 Td-Pick ratio. He also rushed for 554 yards, finishing his career as Clearfield’s all time passer with 7006 yards. All those players graduated. But they do return FB News 4A 1st teamers OG Quenti Bloom (6-2, 205, sr), FB Brett Zattoni (5-11, 190, sr, 1062 yards), wide out Jake Lezzer (6-1, 185, sr, 46/1038) and OT/DT Oliver Belloti (6-4, 220, soph, 62 stops). Zattoni was also FB News 4A 1st team. They’ll be good as always but not at last year’s level that was special. A self-destructing performance against Cathedral Prep, losing 55-21 preventing others appreciating how good they were last year.

Top End Talent

So the North Penn conversation on the Suburban One thread piqued my curiosity about recruiting rankings - namely, which schools are putting out the most top end kids, and how is that spread out/clustered. The results are kind of interesting. I used the 247 database, because it blends all of the recruiting sites into a composite ranking (so the best way to capture industry consensus). I sorted by Pennsylvania rankings for each year going back to 2000. Here are the schools with more than 10 players who have earned "stars" in the system (listed by number of players).

Q&A with Sto-Rox linebacker Diontae Givens

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been working hard lifting, speed training, and working out on my own more often taking it way more serious.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel like I learned how to play faster. I learned a lot of little things that just helped me be able to get from point A to point B with no problems.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I’m trying to improve on being a better leader before the start of the season. Even though our first game will be on the 23rd, I feel like I can show and do so much to give our younger players a boost on their game.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I think we will win states this year and we are not settling for anything less. We went from losing by 50 my freshmen year to beating people by 70 my sophomore year, but we fell short in a few key games. I'm feeling pretty excited about this year I just know it’s our year.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I'm not taking anyone on our schedule lightly, so I’m going to say all of them. We have so much to prove.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“We play South Side Beaver in our week 0 game. They were decent last year. We fell short by 2 points and we weren’t even a whole unit at that time last year. In week 1, I believe we see OLSH. They won the single A WPIAL championship last year. Those guys are always tough, but I feel we are better than them physically and mentally. We are going to see how it plays out.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
