Q&A with Episcopal Academy wide receiver Bryce Cooper

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been doing a lot of running and body weight workouts, along with some agility workouts.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“My speed, which is my most defining feature, as I continue to work overall on endurance and power, I believe I am exponentially faster than I was last season.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“Definitely route running. I’ve been rewatching film and fine-tuning routes, but I know still have more to perfect before I’m satisfied.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“At the beginning of quarantine, I was doing more running workouts in hope of coming back to school for a track shortened track season. However, after realizing we weren’t going back, I started to prepare for the next football season, so Covid-19 only changed what type of workout I was doing.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I think we will have another explosive season. We’ve all been keeping in contact with each other and I know my teammates and I have been working hard. Even though we lost some big playmaking seniors, I have faith that the whole team will step up to fill those gaps.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Maybe Malvern. They want redemption and they have a lot of skill, but I trust in my team’s ability to execute through practice and games.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“Probably Lonnie White. He’s a great athlete, and now that he has committed to playing football at PSU he’s most likely focused all of his workouts on football, so stopping him again this year will be good challenge and a great game to watch and play in.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“At the moment, I have my eyes set on playing football, but I’ll never forget my foundation in track, so the dream would to be able to play track and football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have not been recruited by any colleges yet.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“No, mostly due to Covid-19.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“As a kid, my favorite team to watch was Penn State. I remember tailgating at the games and getting signatures from the players after the game.”

Q&A with Bishop McDevitt linebacker Jaylen Dorsey

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have actually started boxing. It is something to help me stay conditioned and also with that jogging every other day and lifting everyday just to keep my body in shape.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Since last football season, I feel like I improved on most is becoming a leader on the team being a 2-year starter going into my senior year it’s what my place on the team is.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“One thing I’m trying to improve personally is my speed. My 40 right now is 4.6 and I’m working to get to a 4.5.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“It factors really into lifting, especially during this time doing it with the team now u really got to do it on your own. It’s definitely not as good as doing it with the team, but it just makes you want to do it more. I still lift every day and workout, so when we do come back, I’ll be ready.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“Last season, we won our district and went to the top 8 in the state this season. Our next goal is to win Hershey and win the Catholic League.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“With being in our division of the Catholic, you never really know who’s your biggest threat every year. It seems to be a new break out team, so never really know.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“The toughest player that we will face is definitely Tysheem Johnson from NG. He’s that’s C factor that can really do anything especially with his speed and just his work ethic is unique and the biggest threat to all the Catholic League teams.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, my dream is to play college football. Growing up, I wanted to play for Oregon. It was my dream school.”

“As of right now, I’ve had conversations with over 30 to 40 colleges ranging from D3 to D1 Like Temple and Rice to Kings and Widner.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I’ve been on visits to Maryland, Temple, Widner, and have more visits coming up in the fall.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I have a junior day at Grove City College July 18th and I plan to have more visits soon with Kings, W&J, Ithaca, and Alvernia.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college was Oregon. I always loved how they played fast but still smash mouth football and to add on they still have the best uniforms in college.”

Q&A with South Fayette offensive tackle Ryan O’Hair

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“My off-season workout regimen as of late consists of 3 days per week of strength training/lifting, 1 day per week of speed and agility training, and 1 day per week of positional training.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Without question, the biggest improvement for me since last season has been my size and strength. I’ve gone from 6’6 227 lbs to 6’8 293 lbs and have achieved massive gains in the weight room.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“The one thing I will be trying to improve on the most before football season begins is my technique/positional skills.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“While COVID-19 affected a lot of athletes’ workouts, I was able to take advantage of the situation of not being in school and train even harder with the extra time I had available.”

“I feel that South Fayette has the potential to be one of the best teams we’ve ever had this season and look for us to do great things.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Our schedule will definitely be more difficult this year given the fact that we’re now in 5A. Thomas Jefferson and Upper St. Clair are always tough competitors, but if I had to pick the 1 team that I think will be our toughest opponent this year, I would say it’s Peters Township.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“In my opinion, Nahki Johnson from West Mifflin will be the toughest individual player we will face this season. He is a very talented D-End with a lot of speed and is one of the best players in the WPIAL.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I have a strong desire to play football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I am being recruited by a wide variety of schools from P5 to D2. Some of the programs include Penn State, Pitt, Maryland, Rutgers, Purdue, Temple, Miami of Ohio, Villanova and Notre Dame College to name a few.”

Unfortunately, the spring practice visits I had scheduled to Purdue, James Madison, Akron, Villanova and others were all cancelled due to COVID-19.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?

Cottingham Stadium Demolition: 20 Greatest Games

This week, demolition begins on the original Cottingham Stadium structure to rebuild the longtime home of the Easton Red Rovers. Originally built in 1924, Cottingham Stadium (named for William Cottingham, the Easton superintendent of schools from 1853-1913) has been one of the great venues in all of high school sports. Located in the West Ward, across the street from Paxinosa Elementary School (what was Easton High School when it was built), Cottingham initially hosted Easton football, baseball, and track and field before becoming a football-only venue in the 1960s after the current Easton Area High School was built.

This April, the school board approved a full renovation of the structure, which has significantly deteriorated, particularly the original concrete stands which are approaching 100 years old. Easton will play their home games at Lafayette College and BASD Stadium this fall while the “new” Cottingham is being built, which includes fully replacing the stands, a turf field, a new press box, updated bathroom facilities (RIP 90 year old trough in the men’s room), and a new archway entrance on 12th Street.

To send the grand old stadium out, I’ve spent some time researching and compiling the best games in Cottingham history. They’re skewed towards great Easton seasons (though I’m sure there were many excellent games from mediocre Easton teams, the ones that were part of championships and legendary player performances seem right to focus on). They’re also all Easton wins, because even though it makes sense doing things like recognizing the first D11 game ever to go to overtime (the 1988 D11 championship game between Easton and Pocono Mountain), I don’t want to celebrate losses at my party.

Without further ado, here are the 20 best games in the 95 years of the original Cottingham Stadium:

Q&A with Episcopal Academy defensive back Aiden Chavis

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been in the yard doing footwork with some makeshift cones. They recently opened up my school field, so hopefully I can get some work there as well. I’ve gotten creative with the lifts and conditioning and really have tried to focus on speed.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I think I’ve gotten faster for sure, and with every year of getting bigger, faster and stronger the game slows down that much more so we have yet to see but I think the field IQ should be more on display.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“Just speed, speed, speed, and probably more press technique.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“Covid has made it difficult to access a rack for lifting, so I’ve had to get creative in figuring out how to hit all the major groups that I need to, so it’s been a lot of body weight workouts. The biggest thing is obviously not working with the team, but no one can really do that during this time.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I think we’re going to be really solid. We have the talent as our 2021 class is the most underrated in the state in my opinion. We all know what it looks and feels like to win coming off of last year’s success. The sky’s the limit for us on the field, so it will really depend on how well we respond to adversity, especially during this time. I have faith though, and I feel like we’re going to put even more people on notice this year for sure.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think the Inter-Ac never gets the attention it deserves. Definitely one of the most competitive leagues in the state if not the region, so every year the toughest games we play are those last 5 for the title. Coach Fairlie always talks about the fact that like 80% of games in league have been one-score going into the 4th quarter. So definitely any Inter-Ac team, but we have our eye on Malvern and Haverford.

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“Like I said the Inter-AC is full of talent everywhere, so the most dangerous individual is to be seen and it could really depend on the game.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve gotten attention from the Ivies and Navy more recently. Davidson also recently.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Davidson.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Not yet other than camps. I’ve barely made a trip to my own high school.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I have some invites to campus, so if the situation allows, then I should be up at a couple of schools this summer.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“Probably a selection of the Ivies, and whoever else invites me between now and then.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My dad played basketball at Texas Tech, and I knew about Wes Welker so definitely the Red Raiders by default. Later on, the University of Miami morphed into the team that grabbed my attention the most, and they were my stepdad’s alma mater.”

Q&A with Downingtown East defensive tackle Caelan Krasley

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“For my offseason workouts, I’ve been lifting at my friends’ home gym. He has a good setup there with a rack and big tires for flipping.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel personally, I have improved on my Football IQ. I just have a better understanding of the game both on offense and defense.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I want to improve on my speed and conditioning to get back into football shape so I can play all game.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“Covid-19 has really affected my workouts because I would usually be lifting at the school 4 days a week. But it is what it is, and I found ways to get good workouts in at least 4 days a week.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I feel that my team this year, Downingtown East, will have a strong season and be a top contender for the Chesmont.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“The toughest competition on the schedule this year will probably be State College HS.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“I don’t feel worried about any single person we will face this year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I would love to play college football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Some colleges recruiting me are Duquesne, Monmouth, Delaware and Stony Brook.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“The school recruiting me the hardest is Duquesne because they offered me.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have made one college trip to Monmouth, but all my others got cancelled from coronavirus.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I’m not sure if I can make any trips this summer.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I planned to attend a lot of camps this summer, but mostly all of them have been cancelled.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up, my favorite college was Penn State because it’s my dad’s favorite and he just really got me to like them.”

Q&A with Archbishop Wood wide receiver Cardel Pigford

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been going to speed and conditioning training three times a week and the rest of the days I go get some field work in.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Since last season, I feel as though I’ve gotten a lot faster.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“My speed really is the only thing.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“It really hasn’t affected it, only towards the lifting part of my workouts.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I feel as though as long as we work and do what we’re supposed to do, we’ll be fine.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“In my opinion, either Mount St. Joseph or St. Joe Prep.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“I’m not sure.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, that’s the plan. I don’t know yet because I really haven’t been looking at any specific colleges.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Lake Erie and Bloomsburg are really the only school really contacting me.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I’m not sure yet. I will have to see what happens with the virus.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“Yes, it was always the University of Oregon.”

Q&A with Jeannette wide receiver Brett Birch

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I am focusing on getting bigger and stronger. Me and my brother have been working on reading defenses heavily.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I think I have improved on my strength the most since last football season. I’ve also gained about 15-20 pounds of muscle.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I’d like to keep getting stronger, gain a few more pounds, improve on reading defenses, and get much faster while also working on what I already do well.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I believe that we have the potential to go undefeated and win a state title. Anything short of that is a disappointment in our eyes.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Clairton. They’re always good and no matter who they graduate they have good players coming up to fill their spot.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“I’m not sure exactly. We play a lot of great players on our schedule.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Obviously I want to play football in college. It has always been a dream of mine.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up was always the University of Pittsburgh because it was so close to home.”

Q&A with Reading linebacker Kobe Hopkins

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been doing as much as I can with limited resources. A lot of my workouts include resistant bands, dumbbells, and explosive body weight movements.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I really feel like I have improved on my explosiveness, but most importantly, I think I improved as a leader.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“My speed and eye discipline.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“I feel like it hurt my momentum in the weight room a little. I reached a Personal Best with a 500 Squat and was looking to get to 525 before Summer.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I think we will build off of the season we had last year and shock some people.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I really can’t say. We have a pretty new schedule, but Governor Mifflin is always tough.”

“Staying in shape with lots of band workouts supplied by my defensive coordinator and 1 mile every day.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I have gotten better at reading the offensive line, squeezing down, and not moving up field too far.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I want to gain more weight.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“Since I can’t hang out with my friends, most of my workouts are done later in the day and school takes the morning.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I feel we are humble and working hard like everyone else. The hard work always pays off.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Everyone wants to win no matter the team, so my team will be going all out regardless the opponent.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“Everyone is a human being. We all bleed the same red blood.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I want to play football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Lots of D3 schools, but I’ll take what I can get.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“LVC.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes, I have been to Penn State and Ohio State.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Definitely after Covid-19 blows over.”

Q&A with Shady Side Academy linebacker Joey Mele

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been working out 5 days a week ever since the football season ended back in November. Moving from my school’s weight room to my basement, that schedule has not changed. I begin with jogging around my neighborhood for a couple miles. Then, I will do an hour and a half workout according to whatever muscle groups I have planned for that day.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I’d say what has improved since last football season the most is my overall strength. I came into my junior season benching 225 lbs for about 3 reps and squatting 300 lbs for maybe 4 reps on a good day. Now, I can bench 225 lbs for 10 reps and max out at 295 lbs. My squat also greatly increased to 405 lbs for 5 reps.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I believe SSA will do great this football season. Even though we lose some key senior players on the roster, I have no doubt we will have an outstanding year. The team changes in our conference will give some great competition, but this year is the real deal. I know everyone on the team is dedicated and ready to play anybody anywhere. Big things coming.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think our big competition this year will be Apollo Ridge in week 6. It is an away game late in the season against a great team that will be a tough challenge to beat, but I believe my boys are craving to get at them. Last season, we had to forfeit against them because we had too many injured players to safely compete, but that only makes this upcoming game the highest anticipated game of the season in my eyes.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“I’m going to be honest; I don’t know any of the people we play against until preparation week before the game. I only know them by their jersey number and cleat color. I’ve played these teams only once before and some of them this will be my first time playing against, so I don’t specially know the players. I only know how they perform and act on the field.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I do want to play sports in college. As of right now, my mind is set on playing football, but if some baseball recruits arrive along the way, I will take them into consideration.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I wouldn’t necessarily call it recruiting just yet, but I’ve been in touch with a lot of schools and coaches via email and Twitter. I’ve filled out the questionnaires and talked with coaches so I’m on their radar. Some schools I’ve been in touch with are University of Rochester, Williams College, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia, Amherst, and University of Chicago to name a few.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Due to Covid-19, I have not made any college trips yet.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I do have plans for some virtual trips to colleges and hopefully soon they will open back up for me to see in person.”

“I am doing the Elite Football Camp, but that has recently been changed to a virtual database where coaches will be able to see film of me doing different drills and workouts.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
