Q&A with Valley View wide receiver Sean Mackinder

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been lucky that my father put a small home gym together. I have been able to work on some weightlifting with my older brother Matt, who plays TE at St. John Fisher College. I have also worked on speed and agility work with remote workouts from my trainer Jason Williams.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I think my speed has improved. I have really focused on my speed and quickness and I think I am seeing some improvement. I haven’t actually compared times yet, but I am looking forward to see how it measures up against last summer.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“My main focus right now is to try and put on weight and strength without compromising any speed. I am working on a high protein, high calorie diet along with weight training to try and get some mass and strength.”

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“Covid-19 has been tough, but as mentioned earlier, I think I am luckier than most that I at least have equipment to train with. The toughest part is not having coaches and trainers around to supervise and instruct. I also miss working out with teammates. Having guys around to support and push you is a big part and that isn’t possible right now.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“We have a lot of starters to replace due to graduation, most importantly two time All-State QB Janaasah Boone, but I think we have some solid starters back and quite a few younger guys have gotten time. Coach Howanitz has been getting a lot of guys game reps and I think this prepares us for the future. Our freshmen program is also solid, and we have won 4 straight league championships. Our immediate goal will be to win the Lackawanna League Division 2 title and then hopefully a District 2 4A title. I do believe we will be in the mix to compete for both of those goals. We get a great start to our season with a scrimmage against PA state power Southern Columbia and then a chance to avenge our only losses from last year against Dallas.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Without a doubt, our toughest game with be Delaware Valley in week 2. They are a solid 6A program with a great coach in Olsommer. They also have 2 solid D1 recruits in Jason Henderson and Mike Gecik.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“Jason Henderson from Delaware Valley. I have been following him on Twitter and I know he has picked up a bunch of D1 offers as of late. I have also spent some time during the quarantine to check out HUDL video of many good players from the area and he was clearly the most impressive I saw.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I definitely want to continue my football career in college. I enjoy playing basketball, but football has always been my passion and I hope to have the opportunity to play somewhere at the next level.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“As a rising junior, I haven’t gotten a ton of direct recruiting. I am getting emails from colleges for camps and requests to fill out questionnaires. I have gotten quite a few colleges to follow me on Twitter, Go Big, and NCSA. My main goal right now is to just put my name on the radar and hopefully have a successful upcoming season.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I had a game visit to Lafayette College last fall and attended their camp prior to my freshman and sophomore seasons. I really like their staff and feel that they are trying to build something special in the Patriot League. It is a great academic school and I hope they continue to show some interest.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“My goal would be to play at an Ivy, Patriot or CAA program, but I am open to any opportunity to play at a quality academic and athletic program. I have attended camps at Lafayette, Villanova, Princeton, Lock Haven and Bucknell. I would like to get back to some of them and a few more this summer and into the season.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I was really hoping to get to a few Ivy League camps this summer, but it looks like they won’t happen. I hope that things open up and I can attend Lafayette, Villanova, Bucknell, Lehigh, Sacred Heart and if time allows a few more.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Villanova is my favorite college. Both my parents are Nova grads, so I have been to campus quite a bit and I am a huge fan of both their football and basketball programs.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against this fall?
“We will face many good athletes, but I don’t think one stands way out more than anyone else.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

Q&A with Leechburg quarterback Dylan Cook

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been working as hard as I can with getting stronger at my house with the equipment that I have to work with. I have been lucky enough that our field at Leechburg has been open, so I have spent a lot of time there trying to get faster and stay in shape and throwing to my teammate.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?

How has Covid-19 factored into your workouts?
“It has definitely been a struggle because I haven’t been able to be with my teammates and we have not been able to be in the weight room together. We are just trying our best to stay in shape and communicate with each other as much as possible.”

There’s definitely a chip on our shoulder going into the season.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Any trips that I had planned have been canceled and currently I am just doing everything in my power to make sure I will get to make them up when we are allowed to.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
