The Eagles went 14-1 last year against arguably the most difficult schedule in the country facing only 2 losing teams, St. Catharines of Canada (0-7) and Cleveland Heights (4-7). Some of their more notable opponents were their only loss….St. Joseph Regional (8-4, NJ), 22-20, followed by wins against Gilman (10-1, Balt-MD) 14-13, Glenville (12-2, dropped to Div-II in 2013, Cleveland city power) 52-20, Elder (9-4, Cincy, was #1 in state) 31-20, Bergen Catholic (7-4, was #1 in state) 31-28, Florida teams Cocoa (10-3) 24-14 and Mainland (11-2, Daytona Bch, was #1 in 6A) 47-28, Ohio’s Archbishop Moeller (5-5) 49-17 and archrival Saint Ignatius (5-5) 35-28 in one of the most bitter rivalries in the state, known as the Holy War, (SI leads series 28-24-1). Other notable wins came in the playoffs against Mentor (8-4) 34-10, Stow (13-1, Munroe Falls, returns 18 starters for ’16!) 45-7 in the semi and Wayne (14-1, Huber Heights) 42-35, beating the Warriors for the 2nd straight year in the final. All totaled, their opponents had a combined won-loss of 116-52.
Giving you some idea of the caliber of the program, last year’s team was replacing 14 recruits (12-D1) and still won a state title, their second straight, which is saying something in the Buckeye State. Lineman Kyle Tomshack (OG, 6-3, 305, ?....Dayton, Cornell, Davidson, MIT types), Nick Hupka (OG, 6-1, 265), Noah Waddell (OT/DE, 6-4, 240, Duke) and Max Potokar (OT, 6-6 315, Robert Morris) are gone.
Defensively they lose DLs Cal Reynolds (Gannon) and Mike O’Malley (Dequesne) both 6-2, 235 with 14 and 16 sacks respectively, DE Roberto Roena (6-3, 230, Albany), NG Dave Pillets (6-2, 240, Walsh), FS Kyle Fallon (6-0, 180, 143 tackles, ?), CBs Tony Butler (Nebraska), Nik Pelligrino (6-3, 190, Notre Dame College-OH) and Carl Jones (above), DE Noah Waddell (above), LBs Eric Shaver (5-11, 200), Jake Walz (6-0, 205), Delmar Hall (6-0, 220, Mount Union) and Liam Coyne (5-10, 175, 149 tackles, ?), graduated.
