The good, bad and ugly side of covering high school football:

Who's that?

Covering the Liberty/State College scrimmage on Friday was made even more interesting by the fact that neither team was identifying its players.

The State College boys were wearing their practice jerseys, which bear different numbers than their game jerseys. Fortunately Dr. Larry Kenney, father of Penn State recruit Alex Kenney, was dodging the rain drops by standing in the press box, so he filled us in on who was who.

Liberty, on the other hand, went with their practice jerseys as well ... which were numberless. Fortunately, Daniel, our PaPreps.com intern, came up with a beautiful way to identify the quarterbacks from a distance: Anthony Gonzalez is a lefty. The backups? All righties. But that 75+ bomb that Gonzalez threw for a TD? We're not exactly sure who caught that. It was likely Jarrod West, but don't quote us on that.

Probably the most interesting play out of the scrimmage came during a Liberty offensive series, as the starting State College quarterback Dom Mills was credited with a sack on his counterpart.

That shouldn't come unexpected, though. Not only is Mills the starting quarterback, but he's also a returning all-state safety. He easily broke through the Liberty line and wrapped up the quarterback without much of a fuss.

But the irony of the situation wasn't lost on us.

Think it'll rain?

Midway through the 10-play drills, Mother Nature decided to let loose with a torrential downpour. Credit to the teams' supporting staffs for doing everything they could to keep equipment dry. Each team only took one series at down/distance drills, and it was easy to assume that was at least partially due to the less-than-ideal playing conditions.

Both coaches described the scrimmage as an overwhelming success. Sure would have been nice to have seen them give it a go under better weather conditions, though.

That shaky feeling

Heading into a press box is always an interesting situation, but never more so than the box at Memorial Field.

State College's coaching staff had a videographer strategically placed on the roof of the box for filming purposes.

Every time that videographer moved, however, the entire rest of the press box shook. Those of us sitting inside smiled nervously throughout most of the scrimmage.

The Orange Spirit wins the 2009 CDFL Championship


August 10, 2009

In a classic rematch of CDFL titans, the Orange Spirit defeated the previously undefeated Bergen Bears , 20 -8 to capture the first ever CDFL championship. The Spirit jumped out to a 20-0 halftime edge with a first quarter 1 yd touchdown run from Bobby Mangano. Early in the second quarter, Spirit quaterback Ty Landrum eluded the Bears defenders down the left sideline for a 32 yd touchdown, Niko Rechul added the PAT for a 13-0 lead. The Spirit closed the first half scoring with a fumble recovery in the end zone by Jermaine Thomas. The Bears battled back, in a second half dominated with bone crushing hits, to score on a 4th quarter 58 yd touchdown pass from Gerald Merald to Mike Fernandez .

In the consolation game, the Westchester Nighthawks scored an overtime victory over the Rockland Rattlers behind the passing of quarterback Anthony Carillo. Carillo connected on a 20 yd touchdown pass to Malcom Lee on the first play of overtime to seal a 13-7 victory.

CDFL Game Previews 8-9-09-By Dr. Bill Chachkes for Football Reporters Online

This week we have the CDFL championship. After the 4 week summer session, the players have been through the ups and downs of a summer session of true college/professional level football training. As we expected, the quality of the athletes is top notch. Every player in this program has worked hard and it shows in their improved quality of play.

This week the consolation game is Westchester vs. Rockland at 5 pm. Both Teams are now quite familiar with each other, and the coaches can telegraph each other's calls as well. Some might say that's an issue. but at this point, play calling options are limited to the talent you have on hand. Westchester played the last two games with less then a 20 man roster, forcing more players to play longer "shifts" at their secondary positions.

The Nighthawks will continue to lean on Qb Anthony Carrillo, who is showing great improvement with his reads and reaction times. His arm and footwork were never an issue. The last two games saw Anthony spreading the ball around more effectively to Willie Calhoun, Elliott Rhodes, Brandon Davis, Sean Griffen, and Chris Boyce. The line play has improved each week. Their defense will have to pick up the tempo somewhat if they hope to "rattle" Rockland and their coaching staff. The "Hawks" were moments away from a huge upset this week, and have nothing to be ashamed of.

The Rockland Team is something of a mystery at times. They look like they will explode for 20+ points one moment and then the next they look lucky to have Mr. Coe's bionic toe in the game. They move the ball well between the 20 yard lines, but can't seem to punch it in every time. Defensively they can hang with anyone. Again no reflection on the coaching staff or the players, it's just the way the ball bounced this season. Qb Colin Doyle has also shown continual improvement this summer and should receive his share of "looks" at the next level like every other player in the CDFL.

The Title Game will be played at 7pm and Broadcast LIVE on Blogtalk Radio as well as our usual outlets, Ustream.TV, and Verizon Fios public access ch. 32.

Once again we have a rematch of the July 26th late game between Orange and Bergen. The Bergen coaching staff is led by former AFL player Jeremy Beamon and the assistants are Father and Son Ed and Anthony Van Curen. The Orange staff is led by Former NCAA, NFL, and WLAF journeyman QB Gus Ornstein and his assistants are Tyrone Landrum Sr. and Mike Zacagnino. Bergen is 4-0 and Orange is 3-1 with their only loss coming at Bergen's hands two weeks ago.

While Qb Mike Fernandez out of Providence Rhode Island is the main cog in the Bears offensive machine, RB's Marcus Davis, Ruben Kearse, and Leo Cardenas help Fernandez move the ball. Davis had 26 carries for 103 yards coming into last week's playoff game and added 48 rushing yards in the first half against Westchester. Terrel Burnett has been outstanding as both a WR/RB and on returns. he leads the CDFL in Kick off and punt returns, and has three special team TD's. The Bears Defense has been difficult to score on this season as well.

Orange also has a quality Defensive unit led by Levittown NY's Anthony Vecchione, who has been a stalwart on both lines for Orange this season. The Spirit's talent level might be the deepest at this level, but credit the Coaching staff for getting the most out of players like Ty Landrum Jr., a triple threat at QB/WR, and DB, as well as Bob Mangano at QB/RB/DB, and Jermaine Thomas, Jordan Polite Demetrius Jackson, Cliff Assad, Morgan Hall, James Heredia, Lamont Brown, and J.P.Fox. I also need to mention one of the Better looking size wise Offensive linemen in this session, Orange's David Tyrel (#71) who looks like he can fight off triple team defensive stunts.

just a bit of football info-The Collegiate Development Football League Has announced the Match-ups for its Inaugural season. The games will be live broadcast on the internet at UStream and live television via Verizon Fios public access channel 32 beginning at 5 pm on Sunday 8/2/09

Games for Sunday August 2, 2009 - Playoffs

5 pm- Westchester Nighthawks (4 seed) visiting sideline vs BergenBears (1seed) home sideline

7 pm Rockland Rattlers (3 seed) visiting sideline vs Orange Spirit (2 seed) home sideline

The 5 pm game will feature the top seeded Bergen Bears, undefeated in the regular season, vs the resurgent and healthy Westchestwer Nighthawks. The Bears enter the game as the league’s top rushing offense behind the talents of Marcus Davus, Mike Fernandez, Tyreell Burnett, Reubeen Kearse, Leo Cardenas, and Steve Washingtom. The top notch Offensive and Defensive lines are anchored by Mikhail Benscome and Ricky Javier. The Bears have the X factor in” Mr Explosive”, CDFL special teams king Terrel Burnett who has 3 TD on Special team play in each of his last 3 Games . The Bears secondary is tough to throw against with Rasheen Glashin, Trent Small. David Washington, and trusty Bryant Illenberg at Safety. The lock down linebackers of the Bears are led by James Woodard in the middle and Mike Bruner at OLB

The Nighthawks are led by the strong passing arm of QB Anthony Carillo who has a legue leading receiver corp consisting of Willie Calhoun, Malcom Lee, Sean Griffen, and LaRon Davenport. Defensively the Night hawks will be at 100 percent for the first time all season with the return from injury of Kyle Capabianco , Eric Fields and Scott Quintero. Andre Troncoso wil be expected to continue his excellant defensive play in the Linebacker slot, along with defensive general , Brandon Davis directing the coverages from his safety position. Line play for the nighthawks will focus on the ever consistent anchor; Luis Del Gado. The Nighthawks lost to the Bears in the regular season week 2, 13-0

Good luck to both teams as the winner advances to the Championship Game and the loser will play in the consolation game on Sunday, 8/9/09

The 7 pm game matches the the 2 seed Orange Spirit vs the 3 seeded Rockland Rattlers in a rematch of a CDFL week 2 game won by the Spirit 12-6. The Rattlers are coming off a huge offensive explosion in the final regular season game in which they scored 26 points. The Rattlers are guided by leadership of QB Colin Doyle. Doyle and the Rattlers have a diverse group of big strike playmakers in: Lynell Snuggs, Chris Kears, Jarid Valenti, Jon Coppage, Anthony Turner, Robbins Mondesir, David Telesco, and Curtis Walker.

The Spirit enter the game with a quick strike, lightning Offense. Anchored by QB Ty Landrum who can make you miss, and is a dual threat both passing and running. His weapons of choice are Bob Mangano, James Heredia, JP FOx,Paul Andrikach, Jordan Polite, Hugo Pasato, and Jermaine Thomas. On the defense for the Spirit, is top- notch linebacker Anthony Vecchione who is surrounded with cast of CDFl game proven defender; Frank Howell, Jermaine Thomas, Lamont Brown, Ed Ruiz, Mike Terry, Malcom Terry, Jeff Lora, Cliff Assad, and big time DL Brandon Hayward. You can expect to see two-way action from players: Bob Mangano,Ty Landrum and James Herida for the Spirit throughout the game.

The kicking match-up in this game is classic with 2 heavy , powerful hitters sending the ball flying !! Either one could punch home the game winner from 50+ yards. Niko Rechul of the Spirit and Lawrence Coe of the Rattlers.

The Orange spirit offense is multi talented as well and key match-ups will be critical in how the Spirit handle Rattler linebackers CJ DeSomma, Mike Gray and Herbie Mann and Jarid Valenti. DL, George Valdez , Larry Cabara, Matt Patterson will be factors to contend with up front. The secondary consists of a seasoned well disciplined corp with Patrice DeSire, Rashawn Rawles , Jordan Bond, and ringleader Anthony Turner .

As we hit the midway point of the CDFL’s summer session, we have found out several things about the quality of the players as well as their heart, drive, and determination to improve their playing skills. Without fail, every single young man on every team are complete gentlemen, fierce competitors, and some of the hardest workers this scout and ex-coach has ever seen.

Granted this is still a “developmental” program, but the players are grasping the concept of the playbook’s foundations. Granted their are miscues, but that is true of the great game of football at every level.

The 5pm contest this week features the Rockland Rattlers vs. the Westchester Nighthawks. While both teams may have had trouble scoring points their first two contests, they are both capable of moving the ball on the field, and have quality players on both sides of the ball.

The “Hawks” have LaRon Davenport, Malcolm Lee, Kevin Lopez, Aldo Hernandez, and Travis Kelly at the Wideouts, While Chris Boyce, Sean Griffin, and FB Willie Calhoun provide the punch on the ground. QB Anthony Carrillo is steadily improving, and has a powerful arm. He shows lots of poise in the pocket or on the rollout.

Rockland also has a large cast of contributors, including Lynell Suggs and Chris Kears at WR, and a host of RB options for QB Colin Doyle to get the ball to, including Jonathan Coppage, Shaquan Speede, Robbins Mondesir, and Quentin Williams. Herbie Mann,Larry Cabrera, and George Valdez have proven they are able to play both sides of the ball with skill.

The Battle of the “Undefeateds” is between the Orange Sprit and the Bergen Bears at 7pm.

The Spirit are led by former NFL and College QB talent Gus Ornstein at Head Coach. He and his assistants, TY Landrum Sr. and Mike Zaccagnino have a talented squad Including Ty Landrum Jr. James Heredia, Bobby Mangano, Lamont Brown, JP Fox, Jordan Polite, Anthony Vecchione, and the Terry Brothers, Michael and Malcolm.

Bergen Is led by Head coach Jeremy Beamon and assisted by Ed Van Curan and Anthony Van Curan. Their squad fields the likes of Mike Fernandez at QB, Oakland California product Marcus Davis and Steven Washington of Buffalo, N.Y. at RB. Luke McCaffery, William Mengal, Rasheen Glashin and David Washington are some of the WR/DB’s, and Phil Gordon, Ricky Javier, and Mike Bruner have done good work in the trenches.

The Collegiate Development Football League will televise week 2 games, Sunday July19,2009 5 and 7pm (est) on the verizon network channel 32 in east coast states. In addition, plans are being finalized to broadcast free internet games via youstream. Sunday night doubleheader football in July, see future stars play now in the CDFL .

The CDFL games for Sunday 7/19 week 2 are Orange Spirit vs Rockland Rattlers at 5 pm then Bergen Bears vs Westchester Nighthawks at 7pm.

New York City Football Player is top pick in the CDFL Draft !!!!!!

The Collegiate Development Football League completed its player draft tonight (7/9/09) in front of a packed house of 225 people at the league headquarters; DoubleTree Hotel in Mahwah, New Jersey. Honored guests were presented with a “Thank You” from George and Peter St. Lawrence, Co-Founders, for the help and support in getting the CDFL from a dream to a draft in one year. What followed was a showcase of football talent with the following four players selected as First round , top picks by the CDFL league coaches. First overall pick in the 2009 CDFL Draft was Tyrone Landrum, WR/QB, Staten Island, New York by the Orange Pride. Second overall pick was Marcus Davis, RB, Oakland Ca. by the Bergen Bears. Third overall pick was Colin Doyle, QB, New Jersey by the Rockland Rattlers . The final first round selection, and fourth overall was Anthony Carillo, QB, Hillsdale, New Jersey, by the Westchester Nighthawks. Photos of the draft follow. What If there really was a “Field of Dreams” for Football?

I think I found it this past weekend in a small town in Rockland County, NY.

It’s called the “Collegiate Development Football League.” Based in the little town of Hilburn, the CDFL really is the “second chance” for 18-24 year olds who feel they can still play the game at a high level. The brainchild of Father and Son football coaches George and Peter St. Lawrence, The League has held “combine-like” workouts for the last several months, and has a growing following.



“Our objective is not to get you beat up,” said the elder St. Lawrence to the assembled players at Saturday night’s workout. “It is to expose your skill or lack of it, and we mean that in a good way.” Here is a man who understands that injured players can’t do anything to help your status in getting a developmental football skills program started. Nor can they say anything good about how they are treated if the suspect they are being used as training camp fodder. Not the case here as everyone is treated fairly, and like family. Even the Reporter/Scout who shows up for the first time gets the VIP treatment.



While we will examine the Coaches in the next installment, let’s focus on some of the players. All have interesting backchannel stories that deserve telling, but here are four, plus an honorable performance mention.



Anthony Carillo is a QB who has gotten used to adversity on and off the field of play. After his High School playing days, Anthony went on to what he hoped would be four more years of football at Frostburg State. After injuring his shoulder, and his father surviving a near fatal accident, Anthony had to put both his college and football careers on hold to go home and help out. The CDFL has truly represented a “second chance” for Anthony, and that makes his Dad, now mostly recovered happy as well. Anthony also has the skills needed to succeed at the next level. He was already a polished football player coming in, and has steadily improved his game. He also admitted that the playbook looked like “Chinese” to him the first time, but he has studied hard.





La’Ron Davenport is a receiver from southern New Jersey. Even though he attended Grambling State University, things just didn’t work out for La’Ron down south. He was determined not to give up on his goal of playing football. So determined that he took two trains from South Jersey to get to the workout on Saturday. When he got off the train at the Suffern, NY station of NJ Transit, he realized he still had a distance to go. He walked the two and one half miles from the railhead to the practice field! “I’ve been doing lost of resistance training recently,” he told us “so 2-1/2 Miles walking is really nothing.” He is truly thankful for another chance to play the greatest game ever played. “I’m not trying to act like I’m all that. I just want to go out there tonight and every night and showcase what I can do.” La’Ron had a good night, catching a few slick balls in traffic during the 7-on-7 Drills.



Next we have the story of Olsen St. Louis. Olsen was a Kicker at Spring Valley High School, but then attended Hudson Community College, where there was no football program. Olsen didn’t give up either, and Saturday night during warm-ups he was hitting them with ease from 40 yards out. In a moderate rain with a slight crosswind no less. On top of that, Olsen has not kicked steadily in over four years. You couldn’t tell that by watching him prep for each kick. To say he has a cannon for a kicking leg is putting it mildly.



This last player has a bit of history that includes me as well. Jonathan Fox is a receiver from Hawley Pa. who recently graduated High School. No one thought enough of Jon to give him a look at the college level, possibly because of his size (5’10” & 160 lbs), but if they did give him a look they would know what I have known for close to a decade. You see, I met Jon when he was at the NFL Draft as a youngster many years back. At that time he was “the Youngest Expert in the History of the NFL Draft.” I know because that’s what I wrote about him in a feature piece at the time. I also predicted that an NFL team would someday hire him as a scout. While that has not become a reality yet for Jon, The CDFL is his reality. That, and a promise I made to him all those years ago to look me up when he was ready to be a football scout. I’m now happy to say that no matter what happens playing wise for Jon, I will keep my promise and help him in his scouting career.

Finally, I can’t let this piece end without an honorable mention for Willie Calhoun, a Fullback/Linebacker from Newburgh, NY. Willie showed me moves the likes of John Mackey and Howard Cross Saturday night. He broke so many tackles on his way to the end zone after the catch that I lost count at 5. A Strong Safety would have no way to match up against Willie, as he looks to be about 6’1” or 2” and about 250 or 260 pounds. I doubt anyone would want to get hit by him when he’s got a head of steam built up.

Some more exciting news from the CDFL. Just released from our Co-Founder Peter Saint Lawrence. "The CDFL is excited to announce that it is in the early stages of putting together a fall season game schedule! CDFL All-Stars will be selected from the regular summer season and asked to represent the league and themselves by competing against outside teams in home and away games. This is a great opportunity for CDFL athletes to compete on campuses and show their skills live to college coaches!"

As of now, three programs have expressed interest in scheduling games with the CDFL All-Stars, they are: The University of New Orleans Club Team, the University of Vermont Club Team, and the Niagara X-Men Collegiate Prep Team. Links to their websites are posted on www.playcdfl.com.

Oaks Christian 14-0 vs Skyline 14-0, Sept 18
Oaks had Joe Montana’s son Nick transfer in last year from De LaSalle, started. Stats; 133/241/55%/2404, 33 Tds, 7 ints. Committed to UWash who couldn’t convince the top rated QB in country, Skyline’s Jake Heaps to stay in state. He committed to BYU so it will be quite a match up. Heaps stats: 405/648/63%/6104yds/69-11 Td-Int, 21 rushing tds thru soph-jr years. Skyline is one of Washington’s power teams like Bellevue. Both were undefeated last year, Skyline winning 4A, Bellevue 3A and are trying to make a name at the national scene. Skyline could do it here. (Bellevue at Katy Sept 12) I thought the game was in Westlake Village but also see it’s to be held “somewhere” in the state of Washington?

Lakeland vs De LaSalle, Sept 26
After being embarrassed by St. Thomas Acquinas in FL’s 5A final, Lakeland will be pumped for this high profile game. Will be somewhere in Bay Area which is a shot from you but doable. Game like this has to be televised.

De LaSalle is playing Don Bosco again in a game I thought would be in Concord after going to Jersey last year, losing 23-21, but it’s in Ramsey again per Oakland Tribune. That's the latest Skinner Man.

Your presence is requested at the CDFL's 2nd 7 on 7 and Lineman Challenge Competition at the Joe Saint Center in Hillburn N.Y. on Sat. June 20,2009 from 6-9 pm under the lights! If you are already registered with the CDFL or have attended the first 7 on 7 event it will be totally free, if not, it will only be $25.00 which will come out of your registration fee. The event will be pay-per-view internet broadcast live for college coaches and family and friends around the nation to view! The main scout in attendance will be Rutgers University. Teams will be filled on a first come first serve basis, so if you want to bring a team email a confirmation to playcdfl@gmail.com with your teams roster by position, hometown and contact info. If you come alone that is great, we will place you on a team.

We would like all players to bring black shorts and the CDFL will provide the jerseys. Each team will consist of a QB, HB, FB, TE, X reciever, Y reciever, Z receiver, 3/4 LB’s, 2 CB’s and 2 safties. The players will run plays directly from the Official CDFL Playbooks consisting of college level schemes. The Lineman Challenge will include competition for every position on both sides of the ball. All 18-24 year old players are welcomed, and we strongly encouraged anyone who is serious about playing in the CDFL this summer to attend this event. I had the opportunity to chat with John Vogan at a party. Great guy. He's all about the kids.
