The East: Interesting games, scores, scheduling and trends.

D1
SOL
Neshaminy 5-0;
An offense that’s been dormant for two years at 21 and 24 ppg has awoken to 41ppg with road wins at tough venues vs quality, Pennridge and Downingtown West.
North Penn 5-0; At CB South in their first road game of the year!? Production wise, they’re ahead of last year scoring 37ppg vs 35 but it’s on defense where they’ve shined, improving to 14ppg from 19. At 5-0 CB South Friday.
CB South 5-0; Tough run coming up at home to North Penn, then Neshaminy and CB West away followed by Pennridge at home.
Upper Dublin 4-0; Still undefeated and in good company with other 6As in the district with Ridley, CB South, Perkiomen Valley, Neshaminy and North Penn, getting win #5 this week at Wissahickon.
Plymouth Whitemarsh 4-1; Lost in opener to Souderton then 4 straight.
Pennridge 2-3; Thought here is many teams would have 3 losses playing Perk Val, North Penn and Neshaminy, all undefeated, this early in the season. Have 3 straight homers against CR South, CB West and Tennett where expected wins get them to 5-3. Still an exciting team!
CB East 4-1; Easy slate to date with loss coming to only quality team played, CB South 27-6.
Abington 3-2; Ghosts are galloping on a 3 game tear but Neshaminy is next.

Central
Ridley 5-0;
Tough two game run next of 5-0 teams vs Springfield and Marple Newtown.
Garnet Valley 4-1; At Haverford who has won 3 straight with two-3pt losses. Fords should be a tough out
Marple-Newtown 5A 5-0; Get Ridley at home in 2 weeks.

Ches Mont
Coatesville 4-1;
Rolling with 4 straight since Cumberland Valley loss, winning by a total score of 143-43.
Downingtown East 4-1; Like Red Raiders, rolling since 23-7 loss to North Penn.
Bishop Shanahan 5A 5-0; At 1-4 Downingtown West is still the toughest team Shanahan has played to date.
Downingtown West 1-4; Seems opening losses to Perk Val 42-41 and Wayne Valley-NJ 34-31 had lasting effects. First home games for Whippets in 3 weeks could inspire.
Rustin 1-4; WOW….Downingtown West AND Rustin both 1-4.

Pioneer
Perkiomen Valley 5-0;
Been legit for a couple years now but the word gets out slow from the Pioneer league. Quicker now after beating Haverford School 27-24.
Spring Ford 4-1; Only blemish is a 41-40 double overtime loss at Wilson.
Pottsgrove 4A 3-2; Down some but will likely run out to enter postseason 7-2 with momentum.

Del Val
Academy Park 5A 5-0;
Undefeated but here comes the speed of the Del Val with Chester and Glen Mills followed by Penn Wood….then Interboro.
Penn Wood 4-1; Reality check last week losing to Haverford School 48-28.
Interboro 4A 4-1; Inter-Ac kicking Del Val’s butt with Penn Charter blitzing Bucs 28-0.

D12
St. Joseph’s Prep 4-0;
Crushing Oaks Christian, Don Bosco Prep and Archbishop Wood says this group is special….if they can keep the focus.
LaSalle 3-2; Competitive losses to North Penn and Malvern Prep may provide dividends downline.
Roman 1-4; 8 and 7-pt road losses to Neshaminy and Springside CHA prevent a 3-2 record. No give up with this group.
Father Judge 3-2; Losses were to Salesianum (2-1) 16-13 and Springside CHA (3-1) 42-28. It might be a mistake writing them off with Sallies playing super quality losing to defending Delaware champ Smyrna who has Delaware commit QB Nolan Henderson and RB Will Knight at +2000ry last year (19 starters back)….and SCHA having great stuff under center in Matt Rahill who had 352 total yards (192p/160r) vs Roman last week, losing only to Blue Mountain (AAAA, D11, 4-1).
Archbishop Ryan 3-2; 3-0 start but fizzled vs Judge and LaSalle the last two weeks with Wood next.
Archbishop Wood 5A 1-3; The Vikings version of Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers, Raheem Blackshear, is probably way too much for the remaining schedule including LaSalle but we’ll see. He was everywhere against Roman, helping them to their first win of the season on offense, from the secondary and on special teams.
Imhotep 4A 4-0; Outscoring Silver Oak Academy, Ben Franklin, Prep Charter and Gratz 212 to 6. At Malvern Prep Friday.

Inter-Ac
The Inter Ac is off to a great start at 17-4, with a few exciting games this weekend.
Malvern Prep 3-1; Beat Gilman last week 21-0, home to Imhotep Charter School Friday. Friars only loss is to St. Augustine Prep-NJ (4-0), 47-30.
Penn Charter 2-0; Beat Interboro last week 28-0, at Lawrenceville School-NJ.
Haverford School 3-1; Beat Penn Wood 48-28 last week, at John Carroll-MD.
Episcopal Academy 4-0; Beat The Hill School last week 23-19, at Blair School-NJ.
Springside Chestnut Hill Academy 3-1; Beat Father Judge 42-28 last week, home to The Hill School (2-1). Springside’s loss is to D11’s Blue Mountain, AAAA, 4-1.
Germantown Academy 2-1; Beat Academy of the New Church last week 54-20, at New Hope-Solebury (AAA, 4-0) this week. Loss is to Father Judge in opener 35-14.

D11
Emmaus 5-0;
They’re playing like their mascot, a swarm of angry Hornets, outscoring people 261 to 65 for a 52-13 average score. Home to Freedon whose coming off a war with Parkland.
Parkland 4-1; Here’s “the” defense in the EPC-South allowing 7ppg against a tougher schedule than Emmaus has played who they’ll play in the EPC-South final. Get red-hot Whitehall Friday at home
.Whitehall 5A, 3-2; Won last two including at Liberty after a 1-2 start. How did they lose at home to Nazareth?
Liberty 3-2; Looked like “it” after the 3-0 start including ta road win at Parkland, then came consecutive losses to Whitehall at Bethlehem Catholic to wreck that. Let’s see if they recover.
Freedom 3-2; You can’t lose your home games and win a title, especially when it’s to Easton and Parkland. They might be toast now with Emmaus and Whitehall dead ahead, back-to-back on the road and that’s why you have to win those home games then at worst, split with Hornets and Zephyrs.
Easton 2-3; The EPC-South looked like one of the most balanced conferences in the Commonwealth top to bottom before Easton tanked, losing their last two and two of their last three. Probably need to beat Bethlehem Catholic Friday to reach 6-5 (assumes wins vs ES-North, Northampton, Naz) with Phillipsburg (2-1) a toss-up and Emmaus a loss.
Bethlehem Catholic 4A 4-1; Home loss to Emmaus 34-25 but winning all others by average score of 44-7.
Allentown CC 4A 4-1; Big O no D losing opner to Freedom 31-8 then 4 straight by avg score of 54-28.
Stroudsburg 4-1; Trounced by Easton in opener 35-6 then ran off 4 straight but finish hard at Allentown CC and Pleasant Valley with Whitehall sandwiched in between.
Pleasant Valley 4-1; Exciting times up in the EPC-North averaging 44ppg while allowing 28!
Southern Lehigh 5A 3-2; Looks like the best 2 loss team in the Colonial.
Blue Mountain 4A 4-1; Nice win at Springside CHA 21-14 with loss coming to Wyomissing.

D2
Wyoming Valley West 5A 3-2;
Can’t handle quality, losing to Delaware Valley 29-13 and at home to Williamsport 35-22.
Delaware Valley 3-2; Opened with 23-7 loss at Downingtown East then lost another tough road game at undefeated North Pocono 27-20. Get undefeated Williamsport home 10/7 with the rest looking winnable.
Hazelton 0-5; They used to play football in Hazelton, good football but not lately with a 16-49 won/loss since 2010 counting this season.
Abington Heights 5A 3-2; The Comets have played good football for a long time up in Clark’s Summit with only 3 losing seasons since 1999. But a big drop off along the lines recently is in part responsible for sub-par back-to-back seasons of 4-6 in 2014 and 5-5 in 2015.
North Pocono 4A 5-0; Looking good but real comp coming from 4-1 Western Wayne and in final against Scranton Prep, also 4-1 for Lackawanna Conference Div-2 honors.
Berwick 4A 3-2; Back-to-back 9-3 season is not the norm in Berwick. Neither is this year’s 3-2 start. Should be 7-2 entering the finale against Williamsport if they get past Wyoming Valley West on the road October 14th.

D4
Williamsport 5-0;
Here’s the only 6A in a district loaded with historic powers like Mount Carmel, Southern Columbia, Loyalsock Twp and Selinsgrove. Don’t be surprised if Williamsport makes some noise with 20 starters returning, especially with EPC-South lacking a dominator.
Selinsgrove 4A 3-2; Not their usual selves but still capable, beating Berwick. The Seals last title was in 2009 (AAA) going 16-0, beating Allentown Central Catholic (12-2) 31-10 in the quarterfinals. From there they routed Archbishop Wood (10-3) 28-0 in the semifinal, holding them to 49 yards rushing after losing to them 13-7 the year before. They edged Manheim Central (15-1) in the final, 10-7. That was a super team that allowed just 96 points all year.

FINAL: Neshaminy 62 - Truman 28

I hope the kids aren't buying into the newspaper articles (they looked a little sloppy).

Still, the offense looked fine (Jones had five aerial TDs -- that's 15 for the year -- and Dogba added three scores and a pile of yards). It was just that the defense was befuddled at times.

Special teams allowed one return of a kickoff for a score (by Truman) and then there was a "Pick-Six" off a Jones pass when he was hit just as the ball was being released (at Neshaminy's five-yard line). Since that's only his second interception of the year you can't say he's been throwing "picks" (and the other one was a tipped ball so that was not really his fault).

Truman has some very good athletes. Their offense had the 'Skins D confused in the first half (although their offense only accounted for 2 TDs). A lot of misdirection stuff by the Tigers that was almost single-wing style. It has appeared that the kind of an approach has been difficult for our guys (when it's straight up stuff we' match up just fine but sometimes we're flat-footed. Tackling was also a bit questionable as even when they had the Truman runners in check they lost their grip (Truman's backs had some moves and there were a few examples of the 'Skins tacklers just getting faked out). Truman also completed a few more passes than I would have expected.

Overall Neshaminy looked a little unenthused even though they did what was required (and it was 62-28) but they started off a bit punky like they would just cruise along without a care in the world. On the other hand, the Tigers came up wound up and ready to go. Course, the difference over the 48 minutes clearly showed as Truman's only second half score was on the interception while Neshaminy put three more in the endzone.

And they are my guys so: Go 'Skins!

PS Good show by the Harry Truman Tigers too -- they got game.

Coatesville 48 - Downingtown West 9

Whippets take worst beating of year. What's going on down on Manor Avenue? On the other side of the coin I'm looking forward to the 10/7 matchup in Downingtown when the Cougars hosts the Red Raiders. Can't discount 5-0 Shanahan yet but they've got DWest, DEast and Cville in the next 4 weeks. Congrats to Coach Meyers for achieving this feat for the first time in school history. The Eagles will be a tough out in the 5A playoffs.

World dunderheads meeting at UN...

Many of the world dunderheads, obama, Merkel, etc. are meeting today at the UN to "decide" on how to handle the muslim migrant situation. This will surely lead to a great outcome, as these two "leaders" have shown such great judgment in the past, with Merkel allowing the migrants into Germany en masse and Incapabama with his "insight" into the Syrian migrants who he is so willing to allow into our country despite a lack of background information. Not to mention Lie-arry, who wants to increase the number of Syrian migrants substantially. No wonder Trump is getting so much support.

By the way, has anyone seen any reports of how the government screwed up in letting Rahami into the country from Afghanistan? Why are there no reports on how or why this could happen? Why are there no news documentaries on our immigration policies and practices?

Undefeated West teams....6A, 5A and a couple of 4s.

Here's the West and please feel free to jump in or on as I usually say!

D3
Central Dauphin 3-0;
Saw Rams vs Wilson and they have the D and special teams to win districts with the passing game coming along, approaching 2011’s title team. AJ Millar is an athlete with run-pass skills while Brandon LaVia was a linebacker who could throw. But running the gauntlet of the Mid Penn Commonwealth is difficult playing teams like Carlisle, Cumberland Valley, CD East, Harrisburg, Red Land and State High who have a cumulative won loss of 14-2 presently. But it sure gets you ready for the post season.
Cumberland Valley 3-0; CV’s brutal Wing-T will rattle your teeth but so will the schedule that mimics CD’s above except for a more favorable arrangement showing CD on 9/30, then Carlisle, CD East and Harrisburg all coming to Mechanicsburg.
Central Dauphin East 3-0; CD’s sister school may get to 5-0 then comes CD, SC, Carlisle, CV and McDevitt consecutively, ‘tho 5 of last 7 are home. The merger of East High and CD was shelved a few years ago disallowing the mid-state a North Penn clone.
Carlisle 3-0; First year coach Pat Conrad has turned Carlisle into a downhill team. This is a complete reversal with senior quarterback Eric Harris returning after throwing for over 3600 yards last year! Good move by coach since it’s well established you’re not going to win consistently in the MP-Commonwealth, SOL, PCL-Red or anywhere without controlling the trenches. Like the 3 mentioned above also in the MP-Commonwealth, good luck getting through it, especially with Central Dauphin in Friday. Hard seeing a win here but the program is turning around and more viable with its new found approach.
Cedar Cliff 5A 3-0; Jury out despite cumulative scores of 141-35 per all 3 opponents being winless; Penn Manor, Mifflin County, York. But they do return an OL nucleus and strong arm quarterback who can scoot. Difficult road games against McDevitt and Susquehanna Twp will likely derail perfection. CC Colts (Mid Penn-Keystone) play an aggressive brand of football looking good in unis patterned after the former Baltimore Colts.
Red Lion 3-0; Blowing up weak teams with York-Adams rivals Northeastern, Central York and Dallastown yet to come. Northeastern and Dallastown are undefeated to date while Central is 2-1 but they get Ne and D-town home.
Dallastown 3-0; Graduated a lot of bodies and not overwhelming vs weak opponents but here they are! Maybe they jell but Red Lion, Central York and Northeastern will be difficult games, especially with 2 of 3 away.
Northeastern 5A 3-0; Northeastern is down river on the other side across from Steelton, Highspire and Middletown, maybe 8 miles above York playing in the York-Adams with the two teams mentioned above. They share similar scheduling as those two but get em on consecutive weekends beginning Friday against Central then Red Lion and Dtown.
Shippensburg 4A 3-0; Greyhounds are off and running but face a quirky group from Waynesboro (1-2) who are well tested at Red Lion and Lancaster Catholic. Ship just got past physical Bermudian Spring last week 28-24 and could be a little dinged.
Manheim Central 5A 3-0; LL-Section 2 kingpin and perennial D3 powerhouse Barons are rolling again, outscoring teams 156-17. This week’s opponent, Lampeter Strasburg, graduated numbers but will be difficult at home. Beating Elizabethtown in two weeks will propel them to another Section title and undefeated season….If….they don’t overlook a dangerous 1-2 Cocalico team the week before.
Lampeter Strasburg 4A 3-0; As mentioned above LS graduated big numbers but are always….always tough at home. Hard seeing perfection with road games at Cocalico and E-town.
Elizabethtown 5A 3-0; Nice little college town (just outside Middletown) but a tough one this weekend at under rated Cocalico could stall their resurgence. Back to back games against Manheim Central and LS no joke either.

D6
State College 3-0;
No challenges yet but that all changes 9/30 at Carlisle where the Herd is undefeated, followed by 3-0 Cumberland Valley, 3-0 Central Dauphin East then 2-1 Harrisburg High. They close out with Central Dauphin (3-0) at SC.

D7
Upper St Clair 5A 3-0;
Panthers are playing serious D that will be needed in back-to-back homers against West Allegheny 10/7 and McKeesport 10/14, then the closer on road at Woody. Only caveat is latter two showing some chinks in their armor. Render rules!
Penn Trafford 5A 3-0; Challenging road games at Gateway 9/30 and Armstrong 10/14 then the closer at home to McKeesport.
West Allegheny 5A 3-0; West A all the way? Have to manage two brutal road games at USC 10/7 and Woody 10/21. Do that and they’ll get everyone’s attention.
Armstrong 5A 3-0; New kid on the block with merger of Ford City and Kittanning. And like Perk Val back East they’ve passed tests against Karns City, McKeesport and Gateway with a major obstacle in Penn Trafford October 14th. Riverhawks look like the real deal especially if they beat the Warriors at home in Kittanning.
South Fayette 4A 3-0; What a program with two state titles the last 3 years and a 59-2 won/loss from 2012 to present. Don’t see a loss unless it’s New Castle 10/7 but that one is in McDonald where they rarely lose.
Beaver 3A 3-0; 3A and all but what the heck and there’s nothing like taking a closer look at Beaver. They’ll have to run the gauntlet beginning with Keystone Oaks Friday who’s also undefeated then Central Valley (3-1), Hopewell (4-0), Mount Pleasant (3-1) and rival Beaver Falls (2-1). Phew!
Thomas Jefferson 4A 3-0; Good stuff here, smoking people by an average score of 54 to 5 with a pile of veterans and almost all the skill back; QB, WR’s with over 1000 yds and running back Quinton Hill with 1723 yards rushing and 24 Tds. They’re the defending Wpial champ in AAA and looks like a real contender in districts and state for AAAA this year. May get a challenge with Belle Vernon 10/14 and definitely at West Mifflin 10/28.
West Mifflin 4A 3-0; They’ll probably skate for the next four games until ending it with Belle Vernon and TJ who are both really chewing up teams.

D10
Cathedral Prep 4A 3-0; T
oughest games are likely behind them beating McDowell 31-15 and Benedictine-OH 42-35 last week. Will blow past 5As Gen. McLane 3-1 this week then Fort LeBouef 4-0 with potential for trouble in finale vs Canisius-Buffalo NY (Jesuit), a team they struggled with last year. Coach Rich Rollins who hails from Wexford, PA is building a powerhouse in Buffalo, going 43-5 the last 5 years with this year’s 3-0 start.

Undefeated East teams….6A, 5A and a couple 4s

Hit it if I missed some. Thanks.

SOL
Neshaminy 4-0;
CB South looms but it’s home with Titans coming off North Penn. Skins are looking good!
North Penn 4-0; Have feisty Pennridge Friday in Lansdale then away at CB South. Should win both but as we all know, it’s high school football!
CB South 4-0; Looks like a Titan task going unscathed with North Penn 9/30 and Neshaminy 10/7 back to back then Pennridge 10/21.
Upper Dublin 3-0; Hard finding a loss on this schedule. Can they do it again?

Central
Ridley 4-0;
Biggie in two weeks vs rival Springfield at home then undefeated Marple Newtown before what looks like clear sailing.
Marple Newtown 5A 4-0; Get Ridley home 10/7 then at Haverford 10/14.

Ches Mont
Bishop Shanahan 5A 4-0;
Eagles are at Downingtown West 9/30, Downingtown East at home 10/14 followed by Coatesville 10/21 in Coatesville. Doubt they can fly above all that!
Sun Valley 5A 4-0; Have Great Valley who’s scoring points by the bushels at home Friday then Unionville 10/28 also home. Doable and a great start by the Vanguards but not likely once into the meat of it.

Del Val
Penn Wood 4-0;
Severe test Saturday vs Haverford School in a reality check then Glen Mills at home with Academy Park 10/14 in Sharon Hill and Interboro 10/29 also at home.
Academy Park 5A 4-0; Road games at Glen Mills and Interboro with Penn Wood sandwiched in between. Ouch!
Interboro 4A 4-0; Glen Mills, Academy Park and Penn Wood on consecutive weekends with AP the only homer.

Pioneer
Perkiomen Valley 4-0;
They’re at Spring Ford 10/7 but have passed tests vs Downingtown West, Pennridge and last week against Haverford School. The Vikings are one tough out.

D12
St. Joseph’s Prep 3-0;
Archbishop Wood showed moxie and they have as much if not more talent than Hawks will see from here on out. Right, with arguments coming from Father Judge and LaSalle. Roman?
Cardinal O’Hara 4A, 4-0; Don’t see a challenge until CE 10/14 away then the finale at home vs West Catholic.
Imhotep Charter 4A 3-0; The regular season finally starts (and ends….!) with the game at Malvern Prep 9/30.
Philadelphia Central 3-0; Probably home free if they get past Frankford this weekend. But Frankford is well tested vs Pennsbury and Perk Val.

D11
Emmaus 4-0;
Boo coo landmines with Freedom, Liberty, Easton and Parkland yet to play.
Saucon Valley 4A, 4-0; Picking up where they left off last year (?) but a tough one this weekend at Southern Lehigh then Northwestern the following week also away. Then there’s the road game at Notre Dame 10/21.

D2
Wyoming Area 4A, 4-0;
Big game vs city rival Scranton Prep Friday with another major challenge at undefeated Williamsport 10/21. Already beat Berwick at Berwick 34-20 making this a bad ass little quad.
North Pocono 4A 4-0; The Trojans have two road blocks on the schedule, this week vs Delaware Valley and the closer against Scranton Prep. The good news, both are home games and they’re playing good D. Headed for their first winning season since 2010, going 11-39 since!

D4
Williamsport 4-0;
Looking like a million bucks but have a number of hurdles starting Friday at AAAA Shikellamy (3-1). Don’t laugh, Shik lost to ranked Montoursville (AAA, 4-0) by 5 and beat rival Selinsgrove 21-14. Graduated just 6 seniors with returning senior linemen Jacob Stine 6-6 1/2 280, Ethan Oakes 5-11 235 (also FB) and Derek Bussey 6-3 260 opening some holes. Power vs Speed. Williamsport may catch em coming down from Seals win but shouldn’t get too cocky in Sunbury Friday night. Then Delaware Valley 10/8 and Wyoming 10/21 meaning they’ll have to earn it.
