Q&A with West Chester East linebacker Joe Carozza

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Going 5-6, this past season was an improvement off of last year’s record of 2-8 in 2017. We lost in the first round of the district 1 5A playoffs to Cheltenham. We beat our rivals Rustin and Henderson, which is always a goal as a team.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I will be working on getting faster this off-season. I am taking a different approach on lifting by getting into shape for lacrosse, which will ultimately help me in football because I will be faster and more athletic.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I want to get faster and smarter because at middle linebacker, you have to be the smartest and fastest player on the field.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We will have a lot of starters back on offense and defense. The kids in my class are really close with each other and we will all work to be successful. The coaches have created a culture that the players are starting to follow and next year could be special.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Playing in the Chesmont, every team we play is going to be tough. Rustin is always our toughest game because they are our biggest rival and it doesn’t matter who the better team that year is. Both teams will go all out making it a tough game.”

Have you made a college decision?
“I committed to Salisbury for lacrosse.”

Q&A with Cocalico offensive lineman Brock Gingrich

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The football season went way better than anybody anticipated, and I am super proud of my team.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I’m doing indoor track and going to Garage Strength in Reading to work on my explosiveness and overall strength four days a week.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“This off-season, I’m trying to work on my leadership skills. As a junior last year, I was led by numerous seniors who brought out the team and that it was I am trying to do this year.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Next season will be a test for this program. My class only has six guys out and that’s a lot of pressure for these younger guys, but they need the experience.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Our schedule is the toughest in the LL. We have non-league games versus Conrad Weiser, Cedar Cliff, and Governor Mifflin. They are all the section 2 teams, which are no easy games. Throw in a tough cross over game against a Manheim Township team who has been lights out the past few years.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I’d love to play college sports. I don’t know if I want to play football or track yet.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve been pretty far behind in that process so this winter, I’m trying to go on as many college visits as I can.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I’ve visited Shippensburg and Lebanon Valley College.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up and still is now would be Nebraska.”

Q&A with Palmyra Area offensive lineman Jake Miller

How did the high school football season go overall?
“I’d say pretty well. We got to districts, which was a goal of ours, but it didn’t end how we wanted it. Mostly everyone doubted us, and we proved lots of people wrong. We have a good core coming back and hope to continue our success and tradition of winning seasons.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Just lifting, running, working on hip mobility, and preparing for lacrosse season.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I need to improve my hips, which will help me stay lower on blocks. I also need to work on staying in blocks for longer and communication with the rest of my line since most will be inexperienced.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We’re going to be young, so we should have a lot of new learning experiences. It should be fun.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Every game is tough in our division, but as usual, Middletown, Steel High, and Milton Hershey should be good games per usual.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Bucknell, Lycoming, Princeton, and Dartmouth.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Princeton, Bucknell, and Lycoming.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“No.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Yes, Syracuse.”

Q&A with Downingtown West tight end Jackson Luneburg

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season went great overall. We finished 11-2 and we went deep in the playoffs. We also tied the record for best West team ever.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“My plans now are to finish my junior year while lifting with the team. I’ll finish playing basketball and then slowly move into track season.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I am trying to improve my speed and my route running.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“The team next season I feel will do better than the season we had this year. We are working hard, and we got some other kids that are coming up and ready to play.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Most likely Coatesville. That was one of our goals, but we fell short. I feel like there is a good possibility we could beat them next year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes I do. I want to play college football for a Division 1 school.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have had some looks with a couple of Division 1 schools like Maryland and Michigan. I have also talked to Kent State, Delaware, UConn, and East Stroudsburg.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not made any college trips yet.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up has always been the University of Pittsburgh.”

Q&A with Purchase Line linebacker Cullen Goncher

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I’m trying to improve my leadership.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel like we should do some damage next season.”

“Northern Cambria.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No.”

“Yes.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Yes, Penn State.”

Pine-Richland 2018

Figured I'd start a new thread again instead of hijacking that other one like last year.

Had a chance to talk to a couple folks at the basketball game tonight. Indeed, the word is two senior QB's may move into P-R. Everyone seemed to think one was from Ohio, but not sure about the second one.

If that is true, they will have 4 senior QB's and a sophomore QB competing for that one spot.

AP All State Team - 6A

Quarterbacks
Kyle McCord, St. Joseph's Prep (So. 6'3 195): 201-302, 2,884 yards, 35 TDs
Kane Everson, Harrisburg (Sr. 5'11 180; William & Mary): 169-253, 2,734 yards, 32 TDs, 11 INTs/146 carries, 1,000 yards, 9 TDs
Cade Pribula, Central York (Sr. 6'1 200; Delaware): 144-227, 2,863 yards, 31 TDs, 9 INTs
Ricky Ortega, Coatesville (Jr. 6'0 190): 123-195, 2,313 yards, 35 TDs, 4 INTs/119 carries, 822 yards, 12 TDs
Tommy Friberg, State College (Jr. 6'5 200): 137-202, 2,293 yards, 26 TDs, 10 INTs

Not a surprising group of quarterbacks. McCord led the state in yards and TDs and won a state championship on his way to being the AP Player of the Year. Everson was the best dual threat guy in the state this year and led Harrisburg to a surprise run to the state final. Pribula led the state in all passing categories at the end of the regular season (it took McCord until the state final to pass his yardage total). Ortega had an incredibly efficient year for what was the state's best offense for most of the year. And Friberg completed nearly 70% of his passes as State College dominated the middle part of the state.

If I were picking a team I probably would have gone with Freedom's Jared Jenkins (147-254, 2,204, 29-4) over Friberg as Friberg had 5 other All State players on his offense (will address that in a second) while Jenkins was the straw that stirred the drink for the 12-2 Patriots on their way to their first ever D11 title. Ryan Engro of Spring-Ford (184-337, 2,756, 31-6) also would have been a good choice for that last QB spot.

Running Backs
Nyzair Smith, Dallastown (Sr. 5'10 190): 257 carries, 1,985 yards, 24 TDs
Aaron Young, Coatesville (Sr. 5'11 190; Rutgers): 176 carries, 1,660 yards, 28 TDs
Shamar Edwards, North Penn (Sr. 5'11 190): 223 carries, 1,665 yards, 13 TDs
Damen Horton, Hazleton (Sr. 5'10 200): 196 carries, 1,466 yards, 25 TDs
Elijah Morales, Wilson West Lawn (Sr. 5'9 160): 180 carries, 1,134 yards, 16 TDs

Not a great year for PA running backs in the biggest classification. Smith led the state in rushing yards for the second consecutive season, though Dallastown only went 5-5. Young led the state in touchdowns and is the most dangerous running back in PA. Edwards went on an end of season tear to lead North Penn back to a D1 title game. Horton led the state in touchdowns at the conclusion of the regular season and had 7 in a game against Williamsport early in the season. And Morales had a nice year, breaking the 1,000 yard mark during district play.

If I'm picking the team, I would have gone with either Garvey Jonassaint of Downingtown East (247-1,716-18) who had a monster year for a very good DTE team, Keyshawn Jones from Chambersburg (211-1,577-14) who led Chambersburg to their first D3 playoff appearance in years, Luke Meckler from Pine-Richland (168-1,464-17) who was the big play threat for the D7 champs, or Kaleb Monaco of Pocono Mountain West (225-1,748-25) who was second in the state in rushing yards.

Wide Receivers
Dapree Bryant, Coatesville (Jr. 5'8 175): 52 catches, 1,008 yards, 15 TDs
Johnny Freeman, St. Joseph's Prep (Jr. 6'1 205): 51 catches, 848 yards, 11 TDs
Tommy Manos, Nazareth (Sr. 6'0 180): 90 catches, 1,201 yards, 7 TDs
Jacob Hunsinger, Hazleton (Sr. 6'1 185): 51 catches, 1,042 yards, 11 TDs
Marvin Harrison Jr., St. Joseph's Prep (So. 6'3 175): 50 catches, 724 yards, 8 TDs

Solid group of wideouts, led by the pair from St. Joseph's Prep. Freeman and Harrison are both big time prospects who gave state POY Kyle McCord the best receiving corps in Pennsylvania. Manos led the state in yards and catches for the wide open Nazareth offense and broke Jahan Dotson's school receptions record. Bryant was the most dangerous wideout in the state, leading 6A in touchdown catches and posting his second straight 50 catch, 1,000 yard season. Hunsinger was one of three players with a 1,000 yard regular season.

Not a ton of qualms with this group, though Taylor Wright-Rawls from Central York (40-1,025-11), Dante Bonanni from Spring-Ford (64-1,018-11), Dan Byrnes from Downingtown West (44-899-10) all were deserving candidates.

Tight End
Nick Gallo, Council Rock South (Sr. 6'4 235; Virginia Tech): 33 catches, 363 yards, TD

Gallo is the most highly recruited player at the position in 6A. He was a solid short yardage threat in the passing game for CRS. Nick Viva from Nazareth (27-288-7) was one of the best red zone threats in the state for one of the highest scoring teams in the state.

Offensive Line
Andrew Kristofic, Pine-Richland (Sr. 6'6 275; Notre Dame)
Ramsey Kifolo, State College (Jr. 6'3 315)
Mike Katic, Pine-Richland (Sr. 6'3 280; Indiana)
Raymond Christas, Dallastown (Sr. 6'2 260)
Ricky Santiago, Coatesville (Sr. 6'5 305; Towson)

Kristofic, Katic, and Santiago were slam dunks in my opinion. The Pine-Richland pair carried a very young Rams offense back to the state final 4 and will both be solid college linemen. Santiago was the left tackle on the awesome Coatesville offense and was one of the most improved players in the state. Kifolo is an FBS prospect who was the lynchpin of the offensive line for the Little Lions. Christas was the center who paved the way for Nyzair Smith's state leading rushing total.

Offensive line is the hardest position to get a global opinion on. Locally, Kaden Moore from Freedom, Michael Bennet from Parkland, and Patrick Shupp from Easton all had their hat in the ring as All State caliber players (I would have voted for Moore on my own personal ballot).

Offensive Athletes
Marques Mason, St. Joseph's Prep (Sr. 5'8 165): 41 catches, 576 yards, 4 TDs/94 carries, 553 yards, 11 TDs/2 KR TDs
Dresyn Green, State College (So. 5'10 170): 102 carries, 1,012 yards, 13 TDs

Mason was the quintessential all purpose back for the state champ. He had more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage and led the Hawks in touchdowns. Green emerged as the go-to running back for the Little Lions and is a sophomore to watch.

Kicker
Jack Rodenberger, Manheim Township (Sr. 6'0 175): 38-39 PATs, 11-15 FG, long 40, 20 touchbacks on kickoffs/38.3 punting average, 12 inside the 20, long 63

Rodenberger was a Mini-Maxwell winner and a dual threat guy with his leg.

Q&A with Yough tight end Russell Pytlak

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season went very good for me overall. I made multiple all conference teams for tight end and defensive end, along with honorable mentions. However, the season did not go as our team expected it to go. We believed we would make a run in the playoffs in the beginning of the year, but we didn’t manage to make the playoffs. “

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I am currently playing basketball for Yough High School. I still manage to lift about six days a week during the basketball season. After basketball is over, I will continue lifting, and also will be going to speed training at NSSA.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“The thing I am trying to improve most on as a player is being quicker on the field and staying low out of my stances.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel that our team will do good if we can perform on the field like we’re capable of. We will have the talent to compete with every team we play, and we know that. It’s up to us to make sure we play like we can every Friday, and if we do that, we will have an excellent season.”

Q&A with Waynesboro defensive tackle Ethan Saunders

How did the high school football season go overall?
“I felt the season went well. Many felt we may have underachieved, but we were 2 OT field goals away from adding two wins. We also became the first team to host a playoff game in school history, which was exciting.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“We started workouts around Thanksgiving and have seen solid turnout. Personally, I will transition to a baseball focus soon, but will keep up with the lifting program when able.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I most want to improve finishing blocks as an offensive lineman. In our offense, we pull quite a bit and those are the possible highlight blocks I feel I don’t get the full extent of for my tape. For defense, I want to work more with my hands and pass rush moves and technique.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I am really excited for next season already. We return at least a starter everywhere, except for quarterback. We return four of five offensive linemen, which may help the new QB have early success. We also return three of our four captains, which should reflect good leadership in our team. My prediction Is a conference title and hopefully a playoff win.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Shippensburg is always a tough team, so I’m going to give them the nod. They are well coached and also play their game well. They do lose their main offensive superstar in Adam Houser, which I won’t mind having to chase anymore, but they return their QB and WR/TE in Gustafson. It will be my favorite matchup of next year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I plan on playing a sport in college. I am undecided on which, but I am leaning more towards football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have gone on unofficial visits to Elon, Virginia, and plan on going to Delaware while at a baseball tournament.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan on also going to visit Wake Forest.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up, I never really had a favorite team, but lately, Virginia has been my favorite. I like the academics, location, and football program they are building.”

Q&A with Ligonier Valley defensive tackle Michael Petrof

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Our football season at Ligonier Valley was fantastic, although we did not end in the way that we would have liked. But overall losing only one game is not a bad season. I think it was disappointing not to play a full season, which hurt some of the player’s stats. I think Aaron Tutino was most effected. Aaron is a fantastic football player and plays like an absolute beast. For him to get cut short definitely hurt his stats, especially for the all-time receiving record, but we don’t focus on the negative. Overall everything that we as a team did throughout the season was fantastic.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I plan on playing baseball in the spring. Workouts will be very frequent. The whole team is extremely excited to get back to work and start our lifting program. It’s very reassuring to see all of our guys invested in the program and putting it all on the line in every rep, set, and workout.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I as a player need to improve in all aspects of my game. I will focus most on becoming faster and trying to prevent any future injuries. Off of the field, I need to invest a lot of my attention in my education and getting a great grade on my SATs, which I have yet to take.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I think that our team will do very good next year by the way that they have been working on and off the field. Although the season is very far away, it is very hard to judge where we will stand.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“It’s also very hard to tell who will be our toughest opponent. Just like us, other teams lost very good players and it is hard to distinguish a clear opponent that will be the toughest.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I do want to participate in collegiate sports, most specifically college football. Football has always been my favorite and something that I have been passionate about since I first started when I was 7-years old.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Most of my recruiting has come from Division 1 colleges like Harvard, Dartmouth, Saint Francis, Brown, Penn, and the University of Albany. I have also turned the heads at Slippery Rock University.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“The schools that have been showing me the most attention would mostly be Harvard, Dartmouth, and Slippery Rock. I should say that the extent of the attention has been phone calls with the coaches.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan on making my way up to Harvard and Dartmouth for both camps and to visit the campuses.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Absolutely. Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, I have always loved watching Penn State. It would always be thrilling to go watch games at Beaver Stadium. Being in that atmosphere gives me chills and I always had the dream to play in that fantastic stadium.”

Q&A with Glendale linebacker Cory Johnston

How did the high school football season go overall?
“This football season went a lot better than the past few years as a team. Our record does not show it being 1-9, but we were scoring a lot more and our defense was lock down. The other team would always have one big break away play that they would score on. We had three kids with 80 plus tackles, so I saw this season as a boost.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I am a multi-sport athlete and always wrestle and play baseball, so I am focused on wrestling right now and hitting the weight room hard. Getting my body fat low is a big part of my goal and have a very high conditioning rate. Once wrestling is over, I will transition into baseball and then when baseball is over, it will be all focus towards football throughout the summer.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I am trying most to improve on speed. We worked a lot on form tackling the last two years, so if I add speed to it, then that will improve my play a lot.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We have a new coach coming in for the next season, so I don't know how it will go. If our team puts in the work in the off-season, we will be a good football team, but we have to put in the work as a whole.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Our toughest competition next year will most likely be Bellwood. They have a big roster compared to us and always have very good conditioned kids. On top of that, they are a strong team as well.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I do plan on continuing my academic and athletic career at a higher level after high school. My two main sports are football and wrestling, and if I get my speed up, I am definitely considering football at the collegiate level.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I am not being recruited.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have gone and watched a couple football games and visited SFU.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan on visiting my top three schools I would like to continue at soon.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I have always liked Penn State as a kid, and also I am a fan of Old Dominion University.”
