EPC South

I turn to our resident D11 expert, Rover, and see if he has heard anything about the PIAA posting sanctions against the entire division for recruiting. It appeared on Twitter (I know, not the most reliable source) and then disappeared. Something tells me this is fake news, but, if true, it is huge and I need to ask if anyone else knows anything.

Gaige Garcia to Michigan

Southern Columbia running back Gaige Garcia commits to Michigan both to play football and wrestle. Garcia is a three time all state running back and was the AA state champ at 195 pounds last year. He’s a top 5 195 pounder in the country.

He reminds me of Nate Eachus as a prospect. A power conference recruit as a wrestler, maybe more of an FCS football player (most of his offers were from Patriot/Ivy schools). Eachus went the other route, just playing football at Colgate, passing up Michigan and UNC wrestling offers. He went on to be an All American and got a cup of coffee with the Kansas City Chiefs. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in Garcia’s career.

Q&A with Aliquippa quarterback Chase Thornton

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been going hard in weight room and throwing as much as I can.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I believe my arm strength has improved tremendously and my pace for the game. I’m playing a lot faster.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I’m working on being more consistent with my throws.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I feel that we can be back to back state champs.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think our hardest game will be Beaver Falls. Both of our teams have a lot of talent.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Our season opener is Clairton. I think it’s going to be a good game because both schools carry a large football tradition.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I want to continue to play football at the next level.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve been being recruited by a lot of HBCU schools and I’ve talked to some MAC schools.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have visited North Carolina A&T.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I haven’t planned to look at anymore schools this summer.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I went to the Pitt camp I will also attend West Virginia and Penn State.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up was Penn State.”

Q&A with Avonworth safety Jacob Horigan

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been lifting/conditioning with my team, and on the days when we do not have school workouts, I have been training at the gym.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“My speed and strength are things that I have improved a ton from last year. I can displace receivers when they are running routes much easier, and I am able to fly to the football quicker than before. Also, my throw power has improved a ton since last year, and my reads are supported by this ability to push the ball vertically.”

What are you trying to improve on before the season begins?
“My post-snap communication is something that I, as well as everyone on my defense, am trying to iron out. This skill comes through practice, and we know it will not happen overnight, but we are working on becoming better at this every practice.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I am very excited for this upcoming year. Every starter, with a few exceptions, has started since their freshman or sophomore year, and we are all juniors or seniors now. We have grown up together through game experience, and we are finally mature enough across the board to make some noise. We lost a few studs, but we are bringing back a ton of very good football players.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Shady Side Academy and Steel Valley always give us good games, and they are teams that we have circled on our calendars.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Week 0 we are facing Neshannock at home. Losing their quarterback, I expect them to lean on D.J. DeBlasio, Nico Nuzzo, and Joey Antuono. This will be a great test to start the year, and we will be ready.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I have the opportunity to play football or volleyball in college, but I am leaning towards football for sure.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“For football, Ivy League, Patriot League, NESCAC, and PAC schools have been giving me a lot of attention. For volleyball, most of the top D3 programs in the country and some D2 programs have been reaching out.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“As of right now, Brown, Bowdoin, Washington University in St. Louis, and Penn have been giving me the most attention.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes, I visited Bowdoin for a camp and unofficial visit in April. Over the past year, I have also gone on game day visits or junior days to Penn, Princeton, Bucknell, and the University of Chicago.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan on making trips out to Brown, Penn, Princeton, Case Western, and potentially Washington University in St. Louis this summer.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I plan on attending several camps in July, including Penn, Princeton, Brown, Case Western, and potentially one or two more.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My family is a Penn State family, so I have always rooted for them.”

Q&A with Avonworth offensive tackle Josh Elm

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I’ve been doing a lot of running to keep myself in shape and ready for the first game of the season. I am also improving my upper body strength after getting a Labrum repair surgery last December.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I think my defensive line play has gotten way better and I think that’s the position I will shine at this year. I was only allowed to play defensive line for the big games and the playoffs last year, since I was playing through the labrum injury.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I am trying to improve every aspect of my game from using my hands more often on defense or staying low on offense. You can always improve something, you just have to work every day towards reaching your goals.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I believe we should win the WPIAL championship. Our team was young in a lot of positions last year people are doubting us because we lost an All State WR in Turner Grau, an All State QB in Derrick Johncour, and an All State Offensive Lineman in Ryan Felter, but besides that, we have gained a lot in this offseason when it comes to the weight room and kids going to camps to get better.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think that our toughest matchup will be Steel Valley. They always find a way to be great and with a new coach I think they will be tough.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Neshannock is our season opener. I think that they are a decent team. They are returning a lot of lineman, but they lost their quarterback. I think it should be a good game, but obviously I think my guys and I are going to walk out with a win, especially because it’s at home. Lenzner Stadium is an awesome environment with the best band and student section in 2A. It will be hard for any team to beat us at home.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I plan on playing football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“WVU, Clarion, Notre Dame College, Slippery Rock, RMU, Princeton, YSU, Duquesne, Buffalo, Richmond, Brown, Fordham, Dartmouth, Lafayette, Bryant, Lock Haven, IUP, Columbia, West Liberty, Dayton, and Valparaiso.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I think Clarion has definitely been taking high interest in me and I feel very comfortable with them.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes, I’ve been to Slippery Rock, Princeton, YSU, Duquesne, and Buffalo.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan to visit to Clarion, WVU and West Liberty.”

“I’ve attended Clarion, Slippery Rock, WVU, and I plan on going to Notre Dame College.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“WVU. I have always been in love with them. My dad went there, and we always went up to visit and see games. It’s been a dream for me to play there.”

Q&A with Brownsville running back Daniel Grant

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“Strength, footwork, and speed.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“Strength, speed, footwork, and the Xs and Os of the game.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“I feel very confident in my team this year.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Wash High.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Bentworth. They have a few key returning players.”

Q&A with Seton LaSalle safety Max Schipani

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been hitting it hard this off-season. I have been lifting a lot more to put on weight and I have been playing 7on7 with Evolve 2/10ths. They have really helped me with my DB skills and improved them because before this year I never truly played safety, and they really worked with me this offseason.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“I feel that I have most definitely gotten a lot stronger and that has made me faster. I understand the game from a defensive standpoint now even more, too.”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“What I need to improve on the most is probably knowing when to be aggressive and when to bite on routes and when not to.”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“As far as this season goes, I think we are loaded with talent. If we can believe in ourselves and our coaches, we can make a huge run.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I believe the toughest team on our schedule will be either Avonworth or Burgettstown. Both teams are very competitive, and I respect both teams. I think they will be great games to watch with a lot of talent on both sides of the ball.”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“We play Burgettstown the first game of the year and like I said, they are a very talented group and have big guys up front. It should be a great game.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I most definitely want to play sports in college, and I know for a fact it’s football. It always has been.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“The colleges that have offered me right now are Air Force, Albany, Columbia, Cornell, and Rhode Island. Other schools that have showed interest are Pitt, who was cake to watch me workout, Lehigh, Akron, Wake Forest, Bowling Green, Georgetown and Dartmouth.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“As far as which school is recruiting me the hardest, I don’t really want to get into that yet because that’s just something I’m not ready to let be known as of now. But every school that has offered are very interested and great people.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have made several college trips so far; Akron, Albany, Pitt, Robert Morris, and Georgetown so far.”

Notre Dame Wrestling Series

Express Times is running an interesting multi-part series on the rise of Notre Dame Green-Pond wrestling. Here’s today’s installment - how the Crusaders have their sights set on being a national power, and how they can tap into parts of western Jersey that don’t have private school options to attract elite wrestlers:

https://www.lehighvalleylive.com/sp...-be-a-megapower-has-effects-in-pa-and-nj.html

ND has never been relevant in wrestling (or really anything other then boys basketball). They had one champion and three finalists in school history. But they hired former Becahi assistant Matt Veres last year, got enrollments from five junior high state medalists who wrestled for Veres’s club (including the #1 freshman in the country) and the transfer of a state 3rd place finisher from Nazareth. They finished 3rd at states, with two state champs, and have another huge class coming in and at least one big time transfer, a NJ state champion. It’s as “instant oats” a state title contender as I can remember. Going to be very interesting to see how it develops over the next few years.

East Penn Conference Players to Watch

Taking a short break of looking back to look forward. With school out and summer workouts, 7-on-7s, and camp season underway, here’s what we have going in the Lehigh Valley for the upcoming 2019 football season. Here are guys to watch on each roster.

Bethlehem Catholic
The most loaded roster in the EPC also has the best skill player in senior running back/cornerback Tavion Banks (Sr. 5’10 190). Banks rushed for 1,602 yards and 30 touchdowns last season on his way to being named All State in 4A. Banks is a slasher, who may project as a slot receiver at the next level. Banks is poised for a huge senior year, particularly with one of the best offensive lines in D11 blocking for him (guard Jerry Lyons and tackles George French and Jacob Kanyuk are all Division I prospects). If they new quarterback, whomever wins the job, can pose a threat throwing the football, Banks is the early favorite for EPC Player of the Year and Becahi is poised for another deep run in the 4A state playoffs.

Parkland

The biggest recruit in the Valley is senior offensive tackle Nicholas Dawkins (Sr. 6’4 305). Dawkins committed to Penn State in May, where he will move inside to offensive guard. The son of Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins is explosive and athletic like his dad. He’s the best offensive line prospect in the EPC in years. Parkland had a down year last season offensively, and needs to find skill guys, but Dawkins will be a road grader in the run game and is the best tackle in pass protection in the conference.

Freedom

Quarterback Jared Jenkins (Sr. 6’1 195) is entering his third year as a starter for the Patriots. He led Freedom to its first ever D11 football title last season, and the Patriots are the favorites again in 6A. Jenkins, who holders offers from the Patriot and Ivy Leagues, has thrown for 4,941 yards and 45 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions in his career. The Patriots have to replace their entire receiving corps, but return tailback Jalen Stewart and four offensive linemen, so Jenkins will be lined up for an All State year.

Emmaus

The Green Hornets may have missed their window. Emmaus went 12-2 last season, but dropped both match ups with Freedom, including a 49-14 shellacking in the D11 finals. With 1,000 yard rushers Lubens Myers, Sone Ntoh, and Ethan Parvel all graduated, junior Brandon Camire (Jr. 5’9 165) will shoulder the load. As a sophomore, he filled in during Ntoh’s injury and averaged over 9 yards per carry. He’s a speedster, and will try to build on a 640 yard sophomore season.

Easton

The Red Rovers have had three straight up and down seasons and are looking to get back to their consistent winning ways. A big part of that will be the development of junior do-everything back Nahjee Adams (Jr. 5’11 195). As a sophomore, Adams picked off four passes (returning two for touchdowns), forced four fumbles, caught 26 passes for 330 yards, rushed for 300 yards, and scored eight touchdowns. Against Phillipsburg, Adams turned a screen pass into a 68 yard touchdown, reversing field and flashing big time speed. He got a taste returning kicks as a freshman, then became the offense’s big play threat as a sophomore. He’s the biggest breakout candidate in the conference on offense, and he’s already one of the best defensive backs in the league. With returning 330 pound left tackle Patrick Shupp and a talented junior class of linemen, there is a lot expected out of Adams this year.

Nazareth

The Tom Falzone era has been marked by high scoring spread offenses. This year should be no different, with senior quarterback Anthony Harris (Sr. 6’4 185) back for his third year as a starter. Harris threw for 2,693 yards and 28 touchdowns in 2018, and has over 5,300 passing yards in his career. He can be turnover prone (30 career interceptions) he’s also a big play waiting to happen. Wideout Nathan Stefanik returns after a productive junior year, and they should be the best pitch and catch combo in the Lehigh Valley.

Northampton

A move to the EPC North got Northampton football on track last year, as they beat up on the Pocono schools and had their first winning season since 2008. A big part of that was tailback/cornerback Tyrese Brandon (Sr. 6’0 170). Brandon rushed for 1,064 yards and scored 22 total touchdowns during the KKids 8-4 season and was a first team all EPC North pick at cornerback. He projects as a defensive back at the next level.

Whitehall

The last name may ring a bell on senior linebacker/running back Ali Barkley (Sr. 6’0 215). Barkley is a big time athlete, drawing interest from low level FBS programs. He’s more polished as a defender than a running back at this point, but will likely be the Zephyrs feature back this year after splitting the load the last two seasons.

Liberty

The Hurricanes have battled inconsistency this decade, but have consistently produced excellent linebackers. Kendrick Wesley (Sr. 6’1 225) is a big time hitter in the middle who will anchor the Liberty defense. He’s being recruited by a host of Ivy League schools. He also plays tight end for Liberty and should factor into the passing game even more in 2019.

Allentown Central Catholic

The Vikings have struggled since the end of the Harold Fairclough era, but are looking to wake the echoes with the hiring of Tim McGorry. McGorry, who quarterbacked ACC to a state title in 1998, was the offensive coordinator on the 2010 Vikings team that won a state title. Most recently, he was the wide receivers coach at Lehigh. He’ll have a major building block on the offensive and defensive lines with senior Nick Reimer (Sr. 6’7 275). Reimer is a prototypical left tackle who has as much potential as any linemen in the league, Dawkins included.
