Q&A with St. Joseph's Prep offensive tackle Matthew Lombardi

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season went about as well as you could do. We were undefeated state champs and sent our seniors off the right way.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Lifting 5 or 6 days a week. I am usually getting in position work in during the week as well.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“My biggest points of emphasis are definitely my overall strength and footwork.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I think we’re going to be something special and I’ll take my brothers over everybody. I step on the field with them believing we will win every time purely because nobody goes through what we do together.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“As my offensive line coach says, it’s a faceless opponent. Every week we prepare as we would any other week and we grind regardless of who we line up against.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I currently hold 12 offers from Monmouth, Toledo, Villanova, Bryant, UMass, Fordham, Richmond, Albany, Bowling Green, Austin Peay, Lehigh, and Robert Morris.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I get mail every day from certain coaches, so that’s really a hard thing to judge. I feel all the schools that have offered me have been pursuing me pretty hard.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes, I have been visiting schools frequently over the past couple months. Recently it has been UMass, Albany, Pitt, Bowling Green and Toledo to name a few.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I have a few and I’ll be making my way to camps as well.

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I was more of a guy who liked players when I was younger for college ball. I loved watching Lane Johnson at Oklahoma, Tyron Smith, and Eric Fisher. I always watch the tackles when I watch football.”

Q&A with Northeast offensive guard Jacob Dunfee

How did the high school football season go overall?
“This season, we took a huge step in becoming an elite program. As time went on, we began to work better and better as a unit. It was not the way we wanted it to end, but it was definitely progress.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
At Northeast, we have a great off-season program ran by Coach Deion. We are lifting and practicing five days a week. As for other sports, you can find me doing shotput, discus and javelin during the spring.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“The main thing I’m working on in the off-season to improve as a player is agility and footwork. Playing guard, you have to be good on your feet. This past season a lot of my success is attributed to that.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I’m very excited coming into this year because we have a lot of confident and talented guys. We feel really good about what we have going on at Northeast.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?

“I plan to play college football and that’s what I want to focus on after this year.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“We have been all over visiting schools such as Maryland, Rutgers and Texas A&M to name a few. A lot more are planned.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“As a kid, I always rooted for Penn State, Temple, and Villanova just to name a few. I liked them just because they are so close to home.”

Q&A with Father Judge offensive tackle Liam Mulgrave

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season did not go as we expected. We fought hard every game and just came up short sometimes.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“My plan this off-season is to work on my strength and speed while getting into the right shape to compete at a high level. Right now, we have 4 workouts a week along with meeting to install our offensive and defensive schemes.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“The thing I want to improve most about my game is my speed. There is nothing scarier than a fast lineman.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel like we’re going to shock a lot of people this year. Everyone is working hard and us seniors want to go out on top.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“I think the toughest opponent we will play will be LaSalle. They are a young, hungry team with a lot to prove.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

Q&A with Pope John Paul II linebacker Justin Mitala

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Overall, last season was a great experience. We had a lot of new guys transfer in, and it was great getting to play and build relationships with them. We finished the season 8-3 and set a school record for most wins in school history. I finished the season with 120 total tackles, 20 tackles for loss, an interception, and two fumble recoveries. On offense, I had 9 receptions for 3 touchdowns and 160 yards.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I have kept myself very busy so far this off-season. My week consists of four team workouts with my school, one day with my trainer, Johnnie Carlisle, two days with SWAG 7v7 and usually one or two independent lifts at my house. I also keep a lot of time to focus on my academics.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“My main goal this off-season is to become a more explosive player. A lot of my training has been geared towards lifts and movements that directly transfer to the football field. I want to be able to run through running backs and make some huge hits. With that being said, I’m also working on many other things. I want to focus on improving my pass coverage. In order to do this, I joined SWAG 7v7 to help me work on my coverage skills. I get to compete against some of the best receivers in the area and even on the east coast through this team. I receive some top-class coaching every week. We compete in tournaments and I am faced with covering some quick slot receivers man to man. As a linebacker, it is a great skill to be able to lock down a slot, and I love the challenge that comes along with it.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel that next season will be very special. My teammates and I have been working very hard to make sure next season lives up to our standards. We can’t wait to take the field.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“We play Roman Catholic week one and they were a 6A Catholic League team. We are only 3A, but we don’t let that scare us. We are excited for the opportunity.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, it is a goal of mine to play college football.”

Can eight man football make it?

Recently I spoke with a head coach of a small program, Single A. This program dropped football last year due to injuries for the season. He told me they are going to play eight man football this coming year. If your not familiar, it's the same but just no offensive tackles. Still five skill guys but fewer lineman.
Around the country small rural schools have played this brand of football for years.
With teams, not all, struggling to field 35 to 40 players yearly could this keep our sport alive?

I'm looking forward to seeing it in action. Could be fun, maybe more wide open and yet still football.
This will not be popular with everyone. Anything that keeps our young kids playing a sport I believe in, and love, works for me.

Save football?

DisServis?

Trainer John Servis with Smarty Jones lost his bid for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978 when Smarty was “ganged up on”, losing to Birdstone (36-1) in the 2004 Belmont, then saw his brother Jason Servis, the trainer of Maximum Security get DQ’d 15 years later losing to longshot Country House (65-1) in last weekend’s Kentucky Derby. Talk about snake bit.
Smarty proved he was a great horse before the Belmont as Maximum Security may do as he sure looked like the best horse Saturday.

Here’s a nice piece of history followed by Smarty at the Belmont.

......................................................................................................

Q&A with Pope John Paul II wide receiver Stephen Skarbek

How did the high school football season go overall?
“I feel we had a great season and it was the best in our school’s history. There is a lot of work to do because no one is perfect. There is always room for improvement.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“We have had football workouts every week since January. They are going great. We now have a new trainer in our program pushing us and helping us grind to our best ability. We are either in the weight room or on the field throwing routes. We are always out there getting better.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“For me in my opinion, what I need to improve most is my separation off of the defender trying to stop me from running my route, and for my strength, to help me be able to dominate others I am either tackling or blocking. Those are my main priorities.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel our next upcoming season is going to be huge for our program. We have a couple new kids coming in that can help our offensive game and defensive game in a very positive way. Our main thing is we have to work out tails off this off-season and that’s where it will really show. This is not a time for a break or a time to rest on such a huge opportunity for us to be great.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“I think to start off our first game against Roman Catholic with be our biggest game and most competitive. They are a big school and a great football team, but we have to be mentally and physically ready for this game. It will determine how we move throughout this year and how we can see what we have to work on and what works best for us.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, college football is my goal. It was always been my dream playing at that level like my father did at the University of Delaware. But for me I feel I am a d2, 1-AA player, and I will take any opportunity I can get to play at that level.”

Q&A with Owen J. Roberts wide receiver Dante DeNardo

How did the high school football season go overall?
“This year my team and I fell short of playoffs, which was our goal prior to the season. My team and I feel like we owe ourselves and the community a playoff run this year. Personally, I hit my goals of receiving an All-Conference award and to get my school and my own name on the recruiter’s radar.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Currently, I’m in the weight room 3 days a week with my team and conditioning 2 days a week. I also have positional training sessions with my trainer, Jason Williams, on the weekends. Another way I am working on my craft is playing with Philly’s Finest, my 7v7 team.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I am constantly talking with my trainer on what I need to work on, and whatever it is, we are working that area in the session. I’m also trying to improve as a teammate. I’m used to being the younger guy, but going into my junior year, I’m learning from the 2019 class. They helped me a lot this year pm how to make the guys feel comfortable with making mistakes and learning from them.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel that my team will make the playoffs and the win the PAC. We have a lot of young talent in perfect spots and most of our returning guys are returning starters.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Our toughest competition this year is going to be Springford. They’re returning a good amount of guys, plus we’re playing at their field this year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I want to play football in college. It has always been my dream to play college football since my first year of playing in 2nd grade.”

Q&A with St. Joseph's Prep defensive tackle Anthony Leneghan

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Last season as a junior, it was a whole new look at the game for me. After starting on offense as a FB/TE my freshman and sophomore years, it was a big adjustment to move over to become a starting defensive tackle on a defense where there were going to be no returning starters on the defensive line. That made me have to jump into a huge leadership role on the defense, but it definitely was a very positive experience for me to grow as a football player and a leader.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Unfortunately, last season I injured my shoulder and opted to get surgery after the season so my whole off-season this year is working to get back to 100% for the first game on August 28th.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I think that what I struggled on most last season was definitely my pass rush. After watching myself on film after every practice and game, I noticed that I really need to work on my pass rush moves to take my game up to the next level.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I think this team is the best team in the country and we will be in that situation for years to come because we do not only have a great team. St. Joseph’s Prep is a great program and we have a ton of young guys that are ready to step up at any time and play just as well as our starters.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“The great thing about playing for a premier program like St. Joseph’s Prep is how we play a national schedule for our 2 scrimmages and our first 3 games. This season we scrimmage DeMatha from Maryland, than St. Joseph’s Regional from New Jersey and then we open our season going down to Georgia to play Marietta, and then we play St. John’s College from Washington D.C, and finally our third game of the season IMG Academy is coming up to Philadelphia to play us. I think all of those teams will be a great challenge, but we are going to take it game by game week by week and see how everything works out.”

Democrats eating their own!!

Let's put some facts on the table. Joe Biden is the only-I repeat-the only Democrat now running (he will announce sometime) that has a chance to garner votes from centrists. Well Bernie, Elizabeth, Kamila, Beto and the rest are tearing him apart because of this "Creepy Joe" BS. If anyone ever thought Joe was being sexual, get real. Joe is from a different past then the rest of the candidates. A pat on the butt, a grab for the bicep when greeting, a peck on the cheek, these are all things that he has been doing for centuries and were not deemed harassment thirty years ago. Even the Eskimo "Head butt". This BS about women being respected is getting so blown out of proportion. The women who have accused Biden never felt sexual threatened, just that he was in their personal space. They better start thinking of ways to beat Trump rather than beating themselves. How many are running for the nomination at last count? 20? And you thought the Republican debates were tough!!
