Looking real good up close and personal with 3 of remaining 4 games at home. But legit comp (see Top-10 6As) will make it a challenge getting out of the district, similar to District-1.
5A (26)-12 Exeter Township 6-0
Something of a surprise having graduated their best ever team that went 10-4. Tough games ahead at Hempfield (non-section) and Manheim Central, both on the road. The Manheim Central game 10/28 will decide the LL-2.
4A (23)-10 Bishop McDevitt 4-1
Don’t see anyone stopping this freight train but said the same thing last year about Governor Mifflin. They’ll win out in the soft Keystone division. If they stay healthy, look out!
3A (14)-6 Wyomissing 6-0
The season finale could be a challenge vs Lampeter Strasburg (5-1). But it’s in Wyomissing and will decide the LL-4.
2A (7)-4 Camp Hill 4-1
It’s a small but competitive group, making for a tight race between Annville Cleona (4-2), York Catholic (2-4), Camp Hill (4-1) and Delone Catholic (3-3).
1A (3)-2 Steelton Highspire 3-1
The only competition is between Halifax (1-6) and Fairfield (1-4) for the right to get swamped by Steelton.

1 Bishop McDevitt 4-1 4A (1) Mid Penn-Keystone Division
Standout quarterback Stone Saunders completed 19 of 25 passes for 362 yards and 6 touchdowns in the first half alone on the way to a 68-22 rout of Milton Hershey. The score was 62-8 at the half. Saunders, who also ran for a score connected with Tyshawn Russell for 4 passes totaling 112 yards and a touchdown while tight end Nick Slogik (6-5, 240, jr) had 2 touchdowns. Marquese Williams had a stellar performance as well rushing for 108 yards and snagging 4 tosses for 104 yards, all touchdowns. Freshman Maurice Barnes (6-2, 195) took over in the second half, rushing for 80 yards and a score. Hershey (3-3, 3-0) who shares a piece of the Keystone lead with McDevitt and Lower Dauphin is next, coming in on a 3 game winning streak after losing their first 3 games.

2 Harrisburg 4-1 6A (2) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Harrisburg’s largely unheralded sophomore quarterback Shawn Lee picked Altoona apart, completing 11 of 18 passes for 289 yards with scoring tosses of 39, 26, 85, 33 and 56 yards. He also rushed for a 3-yard score. Mahkai Hopkins led all runners with 148 yards and a touchdown. Wide outs Kyle Williams got free for 124 yards in receptions and touchdowns of 85 and 33 yards on just 4 receptions while Amir Jones caught 2 passes for 64 yards. Harrisburg is coming together on both sides of the ball with an offense generating 524 yards and a defense allowing 88 yards in this one. They’re home Saturday against CD East who is battling a 3 game losing streak that includes a 45-14 loss to Cumberland Valley (5-1) and last week’s 42-14 loss to State College (6-0). No rest for the weary in the Mid Penn-Commonwealth!

3 Wyomissing 6-0 3A (3) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 4
The Spartans extended their winning streak to 31 regular season games, defeating Donegal last week 41-7. The win establishes a new record in Berks County, surpassing Wilson High who previously held the mark. Wyomissing followed their well-established format of pounding the ball relentlessly, rushing 44 times for 385 yards. The trio of running backs Matt Kramer (2 Tds), Drew Eisenhower (1 Td) and Charlie McIntyre (2 Tds) did the damage, getting 102, 92 and 87 yards rushing respectively. Ben Zechman was there when needed completing 3 of 4 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. The D was lights out as usual, allowing 160 total yards. For the year, they’ve allowed 45 points and scored 3 shutouts. The win keeps them atop the LL-4 at 3-0, tied with Lampeter Strasburg. Cocalico (3-3) is next, coming in a game back.

4 Exeter Township 6-0 5A (4) Lancaster-Lebanon Section 2
Exeter’s retooled offense is purring now, averaging 43.2ppg with last week’s 47-7 win against Warwick. First year starter Mason Rotelli was perfect, completing 9 of 9 passes for 126 yards, with touchdowns of 11, 15 and 30 yards. He also ran for a 76-yard score in the first quarter to open the floodgates leading to a 41-0 half time score. Richie Karstein (6-1, 220) bulled his way to 124 yards and 2 scores on 11 carries, with Jacob Fost adding a 25-yards Pick-6. Muhlenberg (2-4) is next, coming off a 70- 0 pounding by LL-4 leader Manheim Central (6-0).

5 Cumberland Valley 5-1 6A (5) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Cumberland Valley survived a short turnaround playing a rare Thursday night game against Chambersburg where they prevailed 38-14. It was a difficult game, coming off a disappointing and physical encounter with Harrisburg that they lost 30-14. The Trojans were also questionable coming off their 18-7 loss to rival Carlisle. But at the end of the day, CV just has too many weapons, starting with quarterback Isaac Sines throwing for 58 yards, rushing for 32 and kicking a 32-yard field goal. The versatile JD Hunter rushed for 19 yards, caught a pass for 27 yards and had a 92-yards kickoff return. Big Bryce Staritz (6-1, 215) had 78 yards on 7 carries with Josh Wagenheim (5-10, 200) pounding it for 82 yards on 8 carries. The win keeps them in the division hunt, a game behind State College and Harrisburg, both 3-0, tied with rival Central Dauphin who they play Friday night at CD.

6 Central York 5-1 6A (6) York Adams, Division 1
No stats: Central York cruised to their fourth win in a row to defeat Dallastown 35-21 and remain in a tie atop the YA-1 with York High. No one’s comparing this group with the last few years that won 29 games from 2019 through last season (29-4), averaging 44ppg while allowing 14. But considering they graduated record setting quarterback Beau Pribula now at Penn State, they’re not doing bad, scoring 34ppg while allowing 22, off to a 5-1 start. Their only loss was to Cumberland Valley 35-33 so they’re right there. They play Northeastern (1-4), Red Lion (2-4) and Reading (2-4) where their stats will inflate to misleading levels before the showdown against York High at the end. That one will be at York where the final combined score could exceed 100.

7 York-William Penn 3-2 6A (7) York-Adams Division 1
York was idle last week but are now into the meat of the schedule playing Dallastown (3-3), Spring Grove (4-2, 5A), South Western (4-2, 5A) and Central York (5-1) in that order to decide the York-Adams-1 and post season positioning.

8 Wilson 5-1 6A (8) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 1
Wilson had little difficulty with Governor Mifflin in this, their 65th meeting, winning 32-14. The score doesn’t reflect the gap between these two with Wilson dominating total yards 374 to 208 in wet conditions. Once again, Cam Jones returned a punt for a score, taking it 29 yards for his fourth return of the year. He ended with 140 rush yards and touchdowns of 9 and 29 yards. Tommy Hunsicker was also strong, completing 7 of 12 passes for 114 yards with a touchdown pass and 68 rush yards on 10 carries. Edison Case had 5 receptions for 99 yards. The win keeps them tied with Hempfield in Section-1, a game up on Manheim Township. But that’ll be broken Friday when Hempfield comes in looking for revenge from last year’s 28-21 loss.

9 Hempfield 5-1 6A (9) Lancaster Lebanon Section 1
First year starter Jacob Landis looks to be rounding into form after completing 15 of 20 passes for 182 yards, leading a balanced offense that defeated Penn Manor 34-7. The stat board was even more impressive, winning 402 to 151 in total yards, holding the Comets to 32 yards rushing! Grant Hoover dominated, bursting through for 182 yards on 15 carries. Wide out Gabe Benjamin had touchdowns of 26 and 46 yards on 3 receptions for 78 yards with Deyvid Papepale getting a 24-yard scoop and score. Although they’ve already defeated York and Manheim Township, we’ll know even more about them in the next two weeks with a road game at Wilson (5-1) followed by a homer against Exeter (6-0).

10 Manheim Township 4-2 6A (10) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 1
Swamping JP McCaskey was probably just the tonic Township needed coming as it did after their 17-14 loss to Hempfield where they beat them everywhere but the scoreboard, topped off by a missed field goal as time expired. There was no such drama in this one where the Streaks settled it early, rolling up a 42-0 halftime lead before calling off the dogs. 526 total yards later, the scoreboard read 55-6 at the final whistle. They hit some highs and lows in this one, rushing for 428 yards with 3 running backs topping the 100-yard mark. Declan Clancy had 200 yards and 3 scores, Jack Fitzmaier had 114 yards on 15 carries and a score while Shymere Covington got 112 yards after 12 attempts and a touchdown. About the lows. They held the Red Tornado to 64 yards of offence; 47 passing, 17 rushing. The win keeps them a game behind Wilson and Hempfield at 2-1. Dangerous Cedar Crest (3-3) is next with 5 and 6 point losses keeping them from being in the thick of the division race. Crest will sling it if Jay Huber (56%, 978, 9/5 ratio) is healthy.

11 Manheim Central 6-0 4A (11) Lancaster Lebanon Section 2
Manheim Central remained undefeated with another in a long line of blow-outs, this time walloping Muhlenberg (2-4) 70-0. Central is rolling now, winning their games by an average score of 50-14 against an unchallenging schedule. It will be interesting seeing how they handle adversity. They led the poor Muhlies 55-0 at the half with quarterback Zac Hahn completing 11 of 14 passes for 250 yards, throwing touchdowns of 1, 17, 4 and 67 yards. Bode Sipel with 104 yards and Aaron Enterline with 86 were the lead receivers. Running back Brycen Arnold has turned into a force with 112 yards and touchdowns of 43, 6, 1 and 45 yards, bringing his season total to 918 yards (9 yds per carry) and 14 touchdowns. Muhlenberg was held to 114 total yards, fumbling 3 times and throwing 2 interceptions. Winless Lebanon is next.

12 Steelton Highspire 3-1 1A (12) Mid Penn-Capital Division
Steel High was idle last week allowing for good prep against Camp Hill (5-1) who’s coming off a lackluster 10-7 win against Susquenita (2-4). Camp Hill’s only loss was to Big Spring (2-4) 16-6, the same team Steelton beat two weeks ago 61-7.

13 Solanco 6-0 5A (13) Lancaster Lebanon Section 3
Solanco got a test at Twin Valley (Elverson-Morgantown) who recovered from a 19-3 halftime deficit to make a game of it before going down in a well fought 32-25 loss. T-Val had a balanced attack (162r, 151p), but the Golden Mules were more, pounding it for 384 yards on 59 painful, painful for TV, carries. Cole Harris led the offense with 138 yards with Elijah Cunningham getting 106 plus 41 more in receptions. Josiah Forren added 74 rush yards on 11 carries. Undefeated Elizabethtown at 6-0 is next in a key LL-3 game of unbeatens. They’ll bring one of the more balanced attacks in the LL with a red hot duel threat quarterback supported by a solid cast of running backs and receivers. This should be one of the most exciting games in Lancaster County with absolute opposites going at it in a game that could decide the Section outcome. This is Solanco’s best start since 2015’s 11-2 team that won their first 9 games.

14 Lampeter Strasburg 5-1 4A (15) Lancaster-Lebanon Section 4
The Pioneers had no trouble overwhelming rebuilding Octorara leading 42-0 at the half, then easing up for a 49-13 Secion-4 win. 9 running backs got touches with the defense dominating, allowing 88 yards of offense and 5 first downs. At the same time, Octorara was generous at home, fumbling 3 times and losing 2, plus throwing an interception. Linebacker Drexton Frank probably put the nail in it in the opening quarter with a 20-yard scoop and score providing a 21-0 lead. The win was their fifth straight, keeping them abreast of Wyomissing in the Section-4 race. Rejuvenated Berks Catholic (2-4) off to one of their worst starts ever, put it together the last two weeks and could be a challenge here.

15 West Perry 6-0 3A (16) Mid Penn-Capital Division
West Perry is off to the races this year, storming teams by an average score of 43-9! Last week saw the versatile Marcus Quaker complete 3 passes for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns while rushing for 107 yards, scoring on runs of 4, 34, 2 and 14 yards. Trent Herrera as always was crushing people, rushing for 154 yards on 18 carries. Ian Goodling took care of things up top with 2 receptions for 2 scores totaling 78 yards. That’s quite a threesome they have there, accounting for 416 of their 488 total yards. Big Spring (2-4) is next at West Perry.

16 Elizabethtown 6-0 5A (18) Lancaster Lebanon Section-3
After 13 years of sub-par football with 3 winning seasons and a record of 43-86, Elizabethtown has to qualify as the biggest surprise in the district. While they are not always overwhelming, eg, last week’s 26-13 win against 1-5 Boone, they have dangerous parts at all level of the offense. The big 3 are quarterback Josh Rudy at 71% for 1595 yards with a 15/2 ratio and 204 rush yards; running back Logan Lentz with 839 yards and 14 Tds, a tough out at 5-9 200 lbs; Braden Cummings catching 30 passes for 880 yards and Brady Beault at 354 yards on 21 receptions. Cade Capello has 30 receptions for 334 yards and 128 rushing. First year coach Keith Stokes brings an impressive resume with stints as Coatesville, Township, McCaskey et al, plus a CFL background after graduating from East Carolina. A resume like that say the man and the Bears are legit, capable of giving Solanco a severe test for the LL-3 lead.

17 Gettysburg 5-1 5A (19) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
Gettysburg survived a stiff challenge from the reigning MP-Colonial champ Shippensburg Greyhounds, winning 17-14 on a 19-yard field goal by Jermaine Gondwe, a 5-6, 130lb junior, at the final horn. The game was a mess with off and on downpours throughout the region making for a sloppy field, essentially bringing the game to a halt by the end of the first quarter tied at 14 apiece. Warrior Field is low ground at the foot of East Cemetery Hill which played a prominent role in the Battle of Gettysburg. North Carolinians and the famous Louisiana Tigers crossed the same fields in a rare night attack July 2nd, 1863. Next up is a road trip verses Waynesboro (2-4) who beat them last year 55-49 in 3 overtimes at Gettysburg.

18 Garden Spot 5-1 5A (20) Lancaster Lebanon Section-3
Garden Spot out of New Holland is quietly having their best season since 2012’s 10-1 team that went 10-0 before losing to Manheim Central. They’ve had two winning seasons since then. Last week’s 24-21 win at Ephrata showed they could beat a decent team on the road while overcoming a deficit, down 14-7 at the half and 21-14 entering the fourth quarter. Quarterback Kye Harting gave them an edge with his running ability, leading the team with 135 yards, one, a 54-yard touchdown. He also completed 10 of 16 passes for 96 yards. But kicker Nick Gleeson was the difference, nailing a 33-yard field goal with 4:06 to go. Blake Weaver had a big night too, rushing for 126 yards. But the biggest thrill came when lineman Tyler Hurst (5-10, 220) powered in from the 3-yard line in the third quarter. The D was a major factor in the win, holding Ephrata to 49 yards rushing. Feisty Twin Valley (3-3) is next, bringing their undefeated road record with them.

19 South Western 4-2 5A (NR) York Adams, Division 1
South Western (Hanover) is the best 4-2 team in York County, perhaps beyond, knowing their losses came against Dallastown 20-13 in a mild upset in Hanover, and on the road against Central York 30-28. Other games were won by an average score of 30-6, helped in part by last week’s 20-0 road win against Red Lion. Quarterback Maxwell Misensale was accurate enough considering conditions completing 11 of 19 passes for 105 yards. Reliable Cohen Bull netted 88 yards on 11 carries. Like most games across south central Pennsylvania last week, this one was affected by intermittent downpours and occasional wind gusts that kept offenses ‘small’; South Western ending with 266 total yards, Red Lion 176. With the Mustangs back to their winning ways, look for a big crowd at The Corral Friday night against West York’s 1-5 fading Bulldogs.

20 Central Dauphin 2-4 6A (NR) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Since getting destroyed in the opener at Central York 36-19, Central Dauphin has been ‘right there’ in their losses to Wilson 17-10, at Coatesville 34-28 and at State College 19-8 before breaking through last week at Carlisle in a big way, winning 42-14. Carlisle’s score just 44 seconds into the game lite a match that saw the Rams explode for 42 points while holding the Herd to just one more touchdown. It’s impressive they’ve been able to tread water while breaking in a new quarterback in Travis Linn who replaced the starter two games ago. He threw a 32-yard touchdown to David Chase then ran for a 22-yard score. Chase ended with 98 yards and 2 scores on 12 carries while Devin Shepherd had another strong game, rushing for 144 yards, with touchdowns of 25 and 3 yards on 16 carries. The grind continues Friday against bitter rival Cumberland Valley in a classic ‘East Shore vs West Shore’ battle between these historic south central PA powerhouses. Forget CD’s record. CV better come ready to play.

Pennsbury keeps rolling along with 37-22 win over CB East.

Falcons pounded their way to 14-0 lead one play into second quarter. East answered with 57 yd td pass, then recovered pooch kickoff, hit 28 yd halfback td pass, and later tacked on FG. Pennsbury hit FG for 17-16 halftime lead.

East drove field after second half kickoff for 22-17 lead. PHS FB Mulbah ran 7 straight times including 1 yd td run to put Falcons back up 23-22. Falcons got deflected INT on CBE's next play. Four plays later Mulbah went in from 4 to make it 30-22. Each team went out on downs before East fumbled, setting up PHS at East 16. Mulbah's 3rd td, from 1 yd out, provided final margin of victory.

East outgained Pennsbury, going well over 300 yards total offense using a variety of formations and plays. Passing game was much more effective than ground game.

Pennsbury (5-1) now sits alone in first place in SOL National, and will host Pennridge next week.

Being a district 10 guy the two biggest games will be oil city and the nations leading rusher eithon knox taking on undefeated 5-0 and 4A #7 meadville and a huge rival game between 5A Erie cathedral prep and 6A Erie McDowell. Can prep break thier 2 year slump to Erie McDowell.

1 Bishop McDevitt 3-1 4A (1) Mid Penn-Keystone Division
McDevitt jumped all over Cedar Cliff with three quick first quarter scores followed by three more in the second quarter to put the Colts away early, winning 48-7 in Keystone divisional action. Quarterback Stone Saunders completed 13 of 16 passes for 216 yards with scoring throws of 8 and 75 yards. As ever, Marquese Williams was a hard tackle, rushing for 144 yards on 11 carries, scoring on 11, 15, 3, 6 and 71 yard runs plus a 25-yard Td pass. Tyshawn Russell led all receivers with 108 yards on 4 receptions but left the game with an ankle injury. It’s all coming together for the Crusaders with the offense generating 436 total yards of offense while holding Cedar Cliff to 63 total yards. 63 total yards! Milton Hershey (2-2) is next coming off their 28-21 rivalry game loss to Hershey in the Cocoa Bean Classic.
2 Harrisburg 3-1 6A (4) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
In a district loaded with good 6A teams, Harrisburg established itself as the ‘current’ alpha with a thorough 30-14 win against previously undefeated Cumberland Valley 30-14. Defense was the difference, holding the Eagles to 5 first downs and 171 total yards. A 5-play 79-yard drive where Kyle Williams scored with 2:04 to go iced it for Harrisburg, coming on the heels of JD Hunter returning a kick-off 85-yards for CV, cutting the lead to 8 with 6:43 remaining. Shawn Lee was special for Harrisburg, completing 16 of 19 passes for 98 yards and rushing for 16 yards and a touchdown. Kyle Williams and Mahkai Hopkins were close to unstoppable rushing for 140 and 138 yards respectively with 2 touchdowns each. 386 total yards of offense shows Harrisburg’s development on that side. Division action continues in Altoona Friday against the surprising 4-1 Mountain Lions who are feeling pretty good about themselves following a 28-14 road win at CD East.
3 Wyomissing 5-0 3A (5) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 4
Like McDevitt above, Wyomissing overwhelmed ELCO with defense, shutting the Raiders out in a 42-0 rout, while holding them to 81 total yards of offense. Their stable of running backs (11 got touches) wore them down with 40 carries netting 348 rush yards. Charlie McIntyre led the way with 80 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Ben Zechman stayed sharp completing all 6 passes for 85 yards and 2 touchdown passes. ELCO (Eastern Lebanon County-Myerstown) falls to 3-2 with a road game at Cocalico (2-3) while the Spartans travel to Mt. Joy to play Donegal (1-4).
4 Exeter Township 5-0 5A (8) Lancaster-Lebanon Section 2
Exeter continued its climb in the rankings and march through the LL-2 with a 69-22 win at Lebanon. It’s hard times for sure at Lebanon at 0-5. But to allow 42 first quarter points speaks to something else. With a 57-0 half time lead, Exeter rested a lot of people. Special Teams and defense added scores with sophomore Genuine Stutzman recovering a fumble for 6 while another soph, Jayden Zandier, had a 63-yard Pick-6. Nine players had carries with Zaymar Paschell, another sophomore, leading the way with 68 yards and a score on 11 carries. And yet another sophomore, Gavin Miller, had 56 yards on 4 carries and 2 touchdowns. First year starter Mason Rotelli continued his development completing 5 of 7 passes for 149 yards and 2 touchdown tosses. Warwick (2-3) is next as LL-2 action continues with Exeter at home after two weeks on the road,
5 Cumberland Valley 4-1 6A (2) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Cumberland Valley took a dive in the rankings with a ‘convincing’ 30-14 loss at Harrisburg in a key showdown between Mid Penn powers. The ‘convincing’ part was how inept CV’s offense was against Harrisburg’s defense, gaining 171 total yards. They definitely had their moments, one of their scores was by special teams when JD Hunter went 85 yards to the end zone on a kickoff return with 6:43. (See Harrisburg). They were led by Bryce Staretz’s 88 rush yards. Harrisburg’s coverage and pressure held quarterback Isaac Sines to 2 completions on 5 attempts for 19 yards. No ever said it was easy taking on Harrisburg’s DE Terrell Reynolds (6-2 245) and MLB/FB Mahkai Hopkins (6-1, 240). Chambersburg is next at 2-3, clawing their way back from the season opening 38-21 loss to Central Bucks East (5-0).
6 Central York 4-1 6A (6) York Adams, Division 1
Central York relied on a big first half, outscoring South Western 23-14 (23 unanswered), then hung on for a 30-28 YA-1 win. Juelz Goff had touchdowns of 16, 2 and 32 yards. His last of 32 yards came late in the fourth quarter to give Central a 9-point lead. But South Western came to play, scoring in the last minute of the game for the final score. CY’s star wide-out Parker Hines had a 6-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter with Matthew Parker’s 34-yard field goal in the second quarter proving to be decisive. Although SW gouged them for 222 yards up top, their run game was shut down to 71 yards. Central moves onto what should be a wild one at Dallastown Friday with the Wildcats on a three-game winning streak since opening losses to Hempfield and Township. Look for a hard-fought division game with both at 2-0, tied with York atop the YA-1. Keep in mind Central York has not lost a Division-1 game since 2018.
7 York-William Penn 3-2 6A (9) York-Adams Division 1
The Bearcats have it going now, rolling out 506 yards of offense in a 46-14 win last week against Red Lion. All the key players contributed with quarterback Sam Stoner (coach’s son) completing 9 of 14 passes for 220 yards and 3 scores, while super back Jaheim White rushed for 208 yards on 12 carries. Sophomore standout receiver David Warde had 4 receptions for 114 yards and a score. They have a bye this week before playing Dallastown. Gettysburg’s departure for the Mid Penn Conference left YA-1 teams (7) with an extra non-conference week on the schedule. Unfortunately, York was unable to fill the slot, leaving them an extra week at midseason to get healthier, or, to lose momentum of a three-game winning streak where they’ve outscored opponents 154 to 70.
8 Wilson 4-1 6A (7) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 1
Quarterback Tommy Hunsicker continues to develop, completing 8 of 12 passes for 128 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also rushed for 81 yards on 10 carries. Mega talented Cam Jones had another strong game, rushing for 114 yards and 2 scores on 8 carries, and snagging 3 throws for 54 yards and another touchdown. All totaled, Wilson showed a sizeable offense at 398 total yards with a stubborn defense allowing Cedar Crest 178 total yards in a 36-13 win. Bitter rival Governor Mifflin is next at Mifflin. They’re a shell of last year’s team at 2-3 with running back Nicholas Singleton now starring at Penn State. But it’s Mifflin and it’s at their place. Unfortunately, it’s on a Saturday (?) at 1PM rather than a night game in Shillington with all the atmosphere that brings to the game.
9 Hempfield 4-1 6A (12) Lancaster Lebanon Section 1
Hempfield held off Manheim Township in a heated rivalry to come away with a 17-14 Section win at Township! The Black Knights had a 17-0 lead at one point. And while Township won the stat sheet 362 yards to 200, stats don’t win football games. End of the day, Hempfield’s defense and special teams won the game. Grant Hoover had a 93-yard kickoff return to start the second half for Hempfield (talk about a downer) while Cannon Briscoe’s 25-yard field goal in the first quarter ended up being decisive. Jackson Landis was effective enough completing 12 of 24 passes for 115 yards. One, a ‘Hail Mary’ at the end of the first half for a score caught by the wrong receiver! Nothing wrong with a little luck. With wins over York and now Manheim Township (lost to Central York 30-20), the Knights are proving to be formidable, and a legitimate challenger for the LL-1 crown and a high postseason seed.
10 Manheim Township 3-2 6A (3) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 1
The Blue Streaks suffered a mild upset and drop in the rankings not so much because they lost to Hempfield 17-14, but because the loss came at home in Neffsville. That said, it’s as fierce a rivalry as there is when they play their neighbors from Landisville. Qb Hayden Johnson was steady as always, completing 31 of 44 (70%) for 238 yards with a touchdown and two painful interceptions given the nature of the game. Heck of a thing when you outgain your opponent by 162 yards and 24 first downs to 8 and lose the game. And they had a chance to tie it at the very end, driving from their 2-yard line to Hempfield’s 13 where they missed a game tying field goal. The loss drops them significantly in the poll with two losses despite beating Harrisburg 24-20 three weeks ago. JP McCaskey (1-4) is next, coming off a 46-0 loss to Plymouth Whitemarsh (3-2), an upper mid-level 5A from District-1.
11 Manheim Central 5-0 4A (10) Lancaster Lebanon Section 2
Manheim Central remained undefeated with an impressive 47-13 blowout of fading Warwick (2-3). It was a good game for a half with Central leading 20-13 before unloading for 27 unanswered second half points. The Barons won with the big play, scoring on 80 and 50-yard runs, and 40, 55 and 26-yard touchdown tosses, pounding out 265 yards rushing and 120 up top in the process. Zac Hahn had another solid game completing 8 of 13 passes to 5 receivers for 120 yards and 3 touchdowns. Brycen Arnold lifted his five-game rushing total to 801 yards with a 202-yard effort on 21 carries for 2 scores. They’re averaging 46ppg and allowing 16. This counts the Immaculata-NJ game won by the Barons 44-43 win. Minus that, they’re allowing 8 a game. Muhlenberg (2-3) is next, coming off their 42-8 home loss to Governor Mifflin.
12 Steelton Highspire 3-1 1A (11) Mid Penn-Capital Division
Steel High stayed in revenge mode for the second week blowing away Big Spring 61-7. This follows the 74-30 thrashing given Boiling Springs the previous week as they avenged losses from last year. Big Spring did themselves no favors with 7 fumbles, losing 4, and a porous defense that allowed 499 yards of offense. Steelton’s Eugene Green added a 35-yard scoop and score. Quarterback Alex Erby lit things up, throwing for 193 yards (65%) and 4 touchdowns, while rushing for another score. The ‘big play’ was on full display, scoring on runs of 31, 24 and 71 yards and through the air on 29, 37 and 27-yard scores. Jakhai Noss and Nazier Fuller topped the 70-yard mark in rush yards while Durrell Ceaser and Daquan McCraw topped 80-yards each in receptions. They’re idle next week but seem well recovered from the 39-18 Westinghouse loss 4 weeks ago.
13 Solanco 5-0 5A (13) Lancaster Lebanon Section 3
Much of this one was about Solanco’s quarterback Brody Mellinger who had an outstanding game. Although he completed only 2 of 5 passes for 71 yards, both went for touchdowns of 45 and 26 yards. Not bad for an option attack. Better still, he rushed for 91 yards on 10 carries, getting three more touchdowns. Elijah Cunningham edged him out with 95 yards rushing. That balance provided for 430 total yards with 360 coming on the ground in a 41-21 victory against Conestoga Valley in a non-section game. The Golden Mule D held them to 8 first downs and 222 total yards. They return to LL-3 action Friday at Twin Valley (3-2) where they could get a challenge from a group that showed some pluses last week against Elizabethtown despite losing 47-42. But they’ll have to tighten up a rush defense that allowed E-town 268 yards rushing if they want to hang with Solanco.
14 Carlisle 3-2 6A (14) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Nice bounce back by the Herd beating rival Chambersburg at their place 18-7 after a bitter loss to York High 54-47 and home vs Harrisburg 44-15, catching both coming off losses. Quarterback Louie Shank was the man, completing 12 of 17 passes for 126 yards and rushing for 50 more. Jeremiah Hargrove returned from injury, rushing for 27 yards on 6 carries and a score, plus catching 5 passes for 46 yards. Jaqueece Morell led all runners with 84 yards. The offense showed good balance at 140 passing and 156 rush yards. And the D really stepped up holding the Trojans to 152 total yards and 6 first downs. The win keeps them in the divisional and postseason conversation especially if they beat Central Dauphin (1-4) Friday. A brutal schedule of Central York (4-1), Wilson (4-1), Coatesville (5-0), and State College (5-0) might mislead about CD’s potential. Still, they’re struggling. And with blood in the water, this is Carlisle’s opportunity to get a notable division win for postseason concerns.
15 Lampeter Strasburg 4-1 4A (15) Lancaster-Lebanon Section 4
Cocalico opened the game with a 79-yard run that evidently got Lampeter Strasburg’s attention as they proceeded to outscore the Eagles 23-7 for a key 23-14 LL-4 win. The win was key as it’s apparent Wyomissing, also in Section-4, is not likely to lose a regular season game. At least not until they tangle with LS in the regular season final....from LS’s perspective! Quarterback Trent Wagner allows them to be balanced, completing 10 of 15 for 176 yards and touchdown tosses of 9 and 79-yard. He’s just enough of a running threat to get Cocalico’s attention, gaining 26 yards on 8 carries. Octorara (1-4) is next, struggling in rebuild mode coming off an 8-3 season.
16 West Perry 5-0 3A (16) Mid Penn-Capital Division
The schedule has been soft but the Mustangs are at full gallop, averaging 41ppg with a D allowing 7. All their skill people retuned this season and it’s showing. Quarterback Marcus Quaker made it look easy completing 10 of 13 passes for 172 yards and 3 touchdowns and running for 76-yards for two more scores. Running back Trent Herrera had two touchdowns, Ian Goodling 96 yards in receptions and a score and Holden Bassett a 5-yard scoop and score in a 51-8 rout of James Buchanan (3-2). They return to Mid Penn-Capital Division action Friday at Boiling Springs (2-3), losers of their last 3 games by an average score of 45-21.
17 Shippensburg 4-1 5A (19) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
Ship got its act together last week against Susquehanna Township (1-3), beating the Indians 34-13 after a disappointing 17-6 loss to Northern the week before. But it wasn’t easy with Township battling, down 14-7 at the half. Fortunately for the Greyhounds, quarterback Tucker Chamberlain had one of his best games, completing 11 of 14 passes for 178 yards. He threw 2 touchdowns and a pick. And the triumvirate that is Diesel Koser (11/108), Trae Kater (13/62) and Amari Kerr (11/64), pounded ST into submission the second half, outscoring them 20-6. Ship ended with 418 total yards but Township did damage, rushing for 198 yards. Erby Weller (6-1, 155) had 7 receptions for 128 yards and a score. They need to tighten up the rush defense this week traveling to Gettysburg (4-1) who looks to be the division front runner after beating Boiling Springs, East Pennsboro and Mechanicsburg. We’ll see what defending champ Shippensburg has to say about that.
18 Elizabethtown 5-0 5A (20) Lancaster Lebanon Section-3
Elizabethtown showed off a HUGE offense last week at Twin Valley (3-2), winning 47-42, churning out 540 yards of total offense. Quarterback Josh Rudy was red hot, completing 13 of 17 passes for 318 yards with no touchdowns and 2 picks. Braden Cummings had 5 receptions for 229 yards (!) with Logan Lentz leading the ground assault with 126 yards on 25 carries, getting touchdowns of 1, 16, 5 and 2 yards. Cade Capello had 78 total yards of offense, 62 rushing and a touchdown. Twin Valley stayed with the Bears, albeit with a smaller but more efficient attack (9.04 to 11.48 yds per pt) at 380 yards; 184 passing, 196 rushing. Boone (1-4) is next before the real test at Solanco in what is shaping up as a decisive LL-3 game. There’s a lot of exciting football in Section-3 with Garden Spot (4-1, 2-0) waiting in the wings.
19 Gettysburg 4-1 5A (NR) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
Congrats to the Warriors, back in the thick of it since rejoining the Mid Penn this year after a 9-year absence in the York-Adams League. Things are looking good at 2-0 in division play with Shippensburg coming in Friday. They shut out Mechanicsburg last week 14-0 on the road, relying on their always tough defense. That, combined with the 27-11 win against East Pennsboro (4-1) says they have the talent to play in the Mid Penn-Colonial. They’re led by sophomore quarterback Brady Heiser (6-1, 195), completing 62% for 429 yards and Jayden Johnson (5-6, 160, sr), their principle running back with 638 yards. The D-Line is anchored by Dunn Kessel at 6-3 270, along with Jeremy Drechsler at 5-9 230. Jaceb Dickerson 6-2 240 and Landon Felix at 6-2 225. LBs Cody Furman 5-10 195, Aden Baker 6-0, 215 and Wyatt Heistand 6-0 210 complete a pretty respectable looking defensive front. They’ll need it as Ship will test them!
20 Garden Spot 4-1 5A (NR) Lancaster Lebanon Section-3
Garden Spot exploded onto the scene and into the rankings after walloping Fleetwood 44-0. It was 37-0 at the half. Spartan quarterback Kye Harding had one of those games, completing 6 of 16 passes for 160 yards with a 3/2 Td-Pick ratio while rushing for 179 yards on 10 carries. He had touchdown tosses of 62, 61 and 14 yards and rushing touchdowns of 79 and 33 yards, personally accounting for 339 yards of offense. All totaled, they had 478 yards of offense to Fleetwood’s 124 yards. Have to mention their weapon in kicker Nick Gleeson who had field goals of 25, 40 and 32-yards last week. Makes you wonder how they ever lost at home to Conestoga Valley (2-3) 41-35 in overtime. They have a dangerous road game this week, one of those 50-50 calls at Ephrata (3-2) who also has some talented athletes in junior quarterback Sam McCracken (6-0, 190, 58%, 1098, 12/6), and senior running back Andre Weidman (6-1, 220, 96/412).

Pennsbury's defense put together another stellar effort, holding CB South under 150 total yards, and FB #24 G Mulbah and the offense broke loose in the second half for a 28-6 win.

South started the scoring in the first quarter, following a Falcon fumble, with a short TD run to go up 6-0. Pennsbury answered with a long drive as QB #12 McGurrin kept on the option and scored from 9 yards out, and the Falcons took a 7-6 lead into halftime.

South fumbled the second half kickoff, but penalties set Pennsbury back and forced a punt. The Falcons D, however, gave Pennsbury some scoreboard breathing room with a pick six by LB #6 Wade off of a ball tipped at the line. Another short CBS drive was followed by a PHS missed 42-yard field goal. One play later, South fumbled again, and Mulbah punched it in from 4 yards out early fourth quarter for a 21-6 lead.

The Titans still had life after a nice kick return and screen pass helped set them up first and goal at the 3. Once again, Pennsbury's defense rose to the occasion and held firm, handing the ball to the offense at the PHS 9. Mulbah needed one play to ice the game, racing 91 yards for the final score of the night. The icing on the icing was an on side kick which the Falcons recovered, allowing them to bleed the clock down to one final South play.

Ground and Pound finished with 57 carries for 356 yards and 3 scores. Mulbah went over 200 for the second week in a row (27 for 229, 2 tds) and WB #7 Beighley complimented G with 17 for 94. McGurrin was 1 of 2 passing for 8 yards, but was also sacked a few times attempting to throw.

The Falcons defense is just playing viciously right now. They are straight-up getting after it, bringing people from somewhere seemingly on every play. LBs #9 Gabbett, #6 Wade and #29 Mullery are fast and active. The starting WBs, Beighley and #22 David, also started at CB, shoring up what may have been the weakest links on the defensive side.

Snyder used #18 to kick extra points for the first time, and he was a perfect 4 for 4. #87 has the bigger leg and still kicked off and also tried the long field goal.

Penalties were a problem for the Falcons, with two drives deep into South territory stalled by flags. Gabbett picked up an unsportsmanlike late hit out of bounds on the South QB on their scoring drive. To me, it felt more like a message than a mistake.

Week Six - CB East (5-0) comes to Truman HS to face the Falcons (4-1) for sole possession of first place in the SOL National. Everyone had this one circled in the preseason as a possible Game of the Year, right?

Just wondering if anyone know the status of Trotter and Agard. Trotter tweeted "Everything happens for a reason" right after the game on Saturday, which to me suggests he's dealing with more than an ankle sprain, but I'm just guessing. If they have to play much or all of the season without Trotter (their best LB, by far) and Agard (their best DB, by far) after losing Heard (their best DL, by far) to transfer back in the spring, the picture is quite different.

On a related matter, do others also have the impression there are more players dealing with serious injuries than there used to be? I know I'm very focused on SJP (where Jeremiah Trotter was out for half his senior year, McCord was out for the last four games in 2019, Swift was out for half of his senior year, etc.), but I also hear about the Penn State recruit at Scranton Prep being out for the year and about other key players getting major injuries, and I wonder if there's something that helps explain it all--or maybe just part of it.

“The season has gotten off to a good start. We won our first game, which was a big win because it was most of our team's first varsity game starting. Last night we played a tough North Penn team and lost. However, we learned a lot and should improve going forward.”

“As of right now, yes. There is a lot of room to improve going forward, but each game I have been learning more and more which is a positive.”

“Our team has played well. We have had to battle with lots of adversity, whether it be injuries or coming from behind in a game. We have battled every snap and always compete.”

“There are little areas that we need improvement on such as tackling as a team. However, for the most part, we have seemed pretty good.”

“Have a continued improvement in everyone’s position. Also, getting healthy. I believe that when our team is healthy we will be in a great position to succeed.”

Where oh where is the defense in lansdale? West upsets NP 35-14. West ended the game with the ball on NP’s 10 yard line. I know West was 1-3 coming into the game, but they are much better than their record indicates in my opinion. They have a rash of injuries, but still found a way to handle NP. Is Beck the only one who doesn’t realize NP’s issue is defense? They almost look uninterested/uninspired on that side of the ball.

Keep in mind, CBW’s offense hasn’t exactly been lighting the world on fire. Garnet Valley and Upper Dublin held them to 7 points, Pennsbury held them to 21. I know they scored a lot on Quakertown, but Qtown isn’t very good.

This seems like it's a good measuring stick for RC. Malvern is quite possibly the 2nd best team in the state. Statement win vs Imhotep last week with the backup qb playing alot of the game for the Friars. Roman seems to have the athletes to compete and keep it interesting. Dont think they have the luxury this week of having upwards of 100 yards in penalties and coming out victorious. Any chance they pull off the upset?

did they get the list right in your opinion? should it have been based more on what they did in high school rather than factoring in their college and pro career?
