Last Time They Met
This is a rematch of the 2007 state championship game, where Pittsburgh Central Catholic capped off an undefeated season by shutting out Parkland 21-0 at Hershey Park Stadium, the first shutout in 4A finals history. Near the end of the first quarter, Parkland threw a 24 yard TD to all state selection and future Missouri wide out Jaleel Clark, but were called for offensive pass interference in the end zone, backing the ball up to the 40, and later missed a field goal on the drive. PCC answered with a 16 play, eighty yard drive that burned over seven minutes off of the clock. Brian Fried, who had six catches for 100 yards in the second quarter, finished the drive with a three yard TD from future Pitt quarterback Tino Sunseri. Fried also had a massive 35 yard catch and run just before halftime to put PCC in the red zone with two minutes left. One play later, future Pitt safety Andrew Taglianetti scored a 12 yard touchdown on an end around to put the Vikings up 14-0 before halftime.

Parkland was able to move the ball in the second half, but was stopped without points inside the Viking 10 twice, including a missed 4th and 3 fade to Clark at the start of the fourth quarter. On the ensuing possession, Jeff Knox broke a 75 yard touchdown run to effectively end the game. PCC outgained Parkland 348-206 in the win. Parkland had three backs with over 800 yards on the season in their Wing-T, but none gained more than 32 yards against the ferocious PCC defense. Taglianetti and Knox ran for exactly 200 yards on a combined 28 carries. The PCC defense was the real story, flummoxing the Trojan offense to a 1-9 performance on third down. AP State Player of the Year and future Northwestern defensive end Quentin Williams was the star, and finished with four tackles behind the line of scrimmage and a pair of sacks.

When PCC Has the Ball
The Vikings are massive up front, starting all juniors on the offensive line, the smallest of which being 6’4, 240 pound Jake Trautmann. Left tackle CJ Thorpe is probably the biggest star on the offense, a Rivals250 junior with offers from a host of Big Ten and SEC schools. They offer a mix of spread looks with power, tight end and fullback sets, using 270 pound Pitt commit Rashad Wheeler at tight end and 6’2 240 pound sophomore David Green at fullback (who looks like he has an FBS future as well). Tailback Ronnie Jones has close to 1,700 yards on the year, and is a big back, with some wiggle and breakaway speed. He’ll be the most talented running back Parkland has faced this year by far. They’ll run him out of shotgun sets on zone and counter plays, or line him up behind their 1,880 pounds of blockers with Green and Wheeler in there.

PCC certainly can throw it, from the clips I’ve watched, they like to air it out when they’ve sufficnetly pounded you with the running game to the point you need to stack the box, then like to go up top, with a bunch of Division I athletes playing receiver. Garner, George, and Frerotte are all good sized and athletic, more defensive players playing offense, but they can go up and win one on one match ups. Quarterback Troy Fisher is a sophomore, with Division I size 6’4 200) and what looks to be a decent arm. He can scramble when plays break down as well.

All that said, they haven’t blown people away on offense this year. They pounded out a lot of yards last week against Cumberland Valley, but only put up 24 points. They also struggled to pull away from State College, whose size gave them some problems in the pass rush. They were able to ram the ball down the throats of a good Penn-Trafford defense the week before, but were limited to one offensive touchdown in their big match up with Woodland Hills.

The Parkland defense is comparatively tiny. Defensive tackle Noel Brouse is just as big as the PCC front, but his fellow defensive linemen rely on quickness to get around bigger linemen. Jahan Worth has been the breakout player of the postseason, and while he’s “just” 5’10 220, he’s a state powerlifting champ and one of the best all around athletes you’re going to see at defensive tackle. How well he can disrupt things on the interior is going to go a long way to deciding this football game. Behind them, the three linebackers are all underdized but run exceptionally well. Erik DiGiralomo (lacrosse) and Frank Guida (wrestling) are Division I athletes in other sports, and Marios Dellis is a classic, Parkland/Tim Moncman middle linebacker, a weight room hero who can really read his keyes and plug gaps if Worth and Brouse can keep interior linemen off of him. The secondary will be a fun match up with the PCC receivers, they’re a big group, with real range to go get the football. Fisher will need to be more precise, as chucking it downfield to his athletes isn’t exactly a recipe for success.

But still, Parkland has defended the run exceptionally well, as they have the talent in the secondary to devote a lot of resources to the line of scrimmage, and Tim Moncman is as good a defensive game planner as there is in Pennsylvania. It's a smart defense with kids who can really read their keys and get to the ball. And while they're not massive, they make up for it with a lot of athleticism from all 11 guys, which is really key in high school football. On the season, they're allowing just 2.8 yards per carry and less than 100 yards per game on the ground. Even with their size advantage, PCC will have to mix it up.

When Parkland Has the Ball
We’ll see early how healthy Devante Cross is. After last week, Jim Morgans said in the Morning Call that he had a slight MCL tear, but they’ve also been saying they expect him close to 100% this weekend, and that they were told after the LaSalle game that it was likely a “two week deal” as an injury. He’s been working out with former Morgans fullback at ACC and Penn State captain Mike Cerimele, who runs a sports performance center in Allentown. If Cross is full go, he gives Parkland a puncher’s chance against one of the best PIAA defenses in years. I’d expect Parkland go pass heavy with tempo, and try to put Cross in run/pass situations on the edge. I don’t like cutting the field in half against a secondary with three FBS kids in it, but giving Cross the opportunity to scramble puts the ball in your best athlete’s hands, and makes the PCC defensive front chase him around. The smallest defensive linemen they have is Green. All that beef is impressive, but it would behoove Parkland to make them chase Cross as much as possible and see if conditioning can become a factor, particularly if the Trojans are going no huddle. Yeobah will need to get his, they can't win without him playing well, but they'll need another receiver to step up and have a really productive day. I'd foresee that being Nolan Ridgway out of the slot if it's going to happen.

PCC likes to go man-to-man, with Damar Hamlin (Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt), Bricen Garner (Pitt), Braxton Swann, and Gunner Frerotte in the secondary, with linebacker Ron George (Bowling Green, Temple, Cincinnati, Miami of Ohio) also an adept cover guy. Parkland has one of the biggest sets of receivers I’ve seen in a high school team, but I don’t think they’ll be able to get away with just throwing it up to Kenny Yeboah and having him come down with touchdowns. They love to spread teams out with four and five receivers, and Cross’ ability to spread the ball around will be key. PCC gets a lot of pressure with their defensive line, so Cross will have to get rid of it, or be healthy enough to buy himself time with his legs. If he can do the latter, PCC needs to keep honest with their rush lanes, because if Cross can break the pocket, he can take it to the house. I don’t see a traditional run game being much of a factor for Parkland, DiGiralomo will get his carries to keep PCC honest, but I think it will be a heavy dose of precision, quick throws, and scrambles, much like the game plan for SJP in the 2014 quarterfinal

Special Teams
PCC is exceptional in the return game, with Garner and Jones leading the charge. A Jones return really broke open the Woodland Hills game two weeks ago. Parkland is very average on returns, and certainly doesn’t have a gamebreaker on special teams like PCC. Neither team is exceptional in the kicking game, but it’s not a weakness by any stretch of the imagination for either.

The Pick
Even though the teams are very different, I think it will play out a lot like the 2007 game. Yards will be at a premium for both teams, and whoever takes the most advantage of their opportunities will win. I said earlier in the week, if they’re both playing their best, PCC is the better team, but Parkland is absolutely within their margin of error. The Trojans will need to play their best game of the season, and force/take advantage of a few PCC mistakes. As much as I’d like to see that happen to bring a title back to D11 (the first in 4A since the ’08 Liberty group), I wouldn’t bet on it. I don't see PCC blowing them out, but slowly suffocating them with the defense and wearing them down late.

Pittsburgh Central Catholic: 17-7

Brandon McIlwain is the PA Gatorade Player of the Year

Well deserved, the kid is a special talent and more importantly has a great head on his shoulders. His off the field resume is just as impressive. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next year. He is projected as a first round pick in the baseball amateur draft. Also, is he a lock for USC? Brandon just spent time with PSU QB coach Ricky Rahne. He's in a terrific spot no matter what he decides. Wish him the best.

California islamist terrorist...

Out here in Fresno, California today a customer told me about a recent act of islamist terrorism at nearby University of California at Merced in which an islamist "student" stabbed four people on campus and was then fatally shot by security. I said that I hadn't heard of this story and I thought that if it had happened, it would have been a big deal in the media because islamist terrorism on a college campus should be a big story.

Sure enough, here is the link to the story on CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2015/11/04/us/university-california-merced-stabbings/

Notice that there is no mention of the islamist's name, which is not surprising at the ever politically correct CNN. The reporter in the interview with Wolf Blitzer knows little about the guy, which is understandable since it's a same-day report. . However, the print story was updated a day after the attack, so there was probably time to get the attacker's name, if they wanted to do so.

But the bigger issue is why this was not a big story for at least a few days; even Nancy Grace should have gotten involved, but she was probably covering some obscure missing person case! The customer told me that he heard that the islamist told his roommate that he would kill the roommate if the roommate even touched his "prayer mat." Yes, many of these people fit right in with our culture. I don't see any problems.

State Finals
This is it, the Final 4. Wrong sport but sounds good. So here’s a brief write up on this week’s games. Playoffs are 13-3 (81%) so not bad with this week’s projections below.

Class AAAA
Pittsburgh Central Catholic 14-1-Parkland 14-1……..12.97 Central Catholic

Central Catholic won 24-7 having little trouble with Cumberland Valley’s version of the Wing-T while Parkland did pretty much the same, taming the versatile attack of Upper Dublin 30-14. Central Catholic’s much vaunted defense was center stage in this one holding the Eagles (13-3) to 126 total yards of offense, 5 sacks and only 88 yards rushing. Catholic was led by sophomore QB Troy Foster, connecting on 8 of 12 for 180 yards, running back Ronnie Jones’s 140 yards and JJ Younger’s 12 carries for 92 yards. They move on to play Parkland who throttled Upper Dublin (14-1), holding them to 41 yards on the ground and 211 up top. Devante Cross completed 16 of 25 passes for 241 yards and a score with most of the damage done by Kenny Yeboah’s 104 yards on 7 receptions and Zach Bross’s 4 receptions for 84 yards. Ryan Stover was Upper Dublin’s primary, completing 21 of 36 for 211 yards while rushing for 27 on 9 attempts. Parkland’s last trip to the final was 2007 against….you guessed it, Central Catholic, who won 21-0. That was also Catholic’s last gold medal. Their most recent trip was 2013 where they lost to St. Joseph’s Prep 35-10. All totaled they’ve won gold medals in 88, 04 and 07, and silver in 03 and 13. The Trojans state title was in 2002, where they defeated Woodland Hills 34-12.
Ok, so here’s the run down on Central Catholic’s D1 players. Just kidding..!..as that topic has been beat to death so let’s see how they play against Parkland. They’ve slugged their way past balanced teams like Pine Richland and Penn Trafford, nailed the one-dimensionals like Upper St Clair, State College and North Allegheny, reversing a 24-7 game-3 loss to them, then had a surprisingly easy game with the most talented team on their schedule beating Woodland Hills (11-1) 24-6. That one gets your attention. Meanwhile Parkland defeated North Allegheny-like teams in Easton and Emmaus as well as the balanced, multi-dimensional teams like Nazareth, Wyoming Valley West, Upper Dublin and LaSalle, with the only loss coming to Liberty, 41-34. For Parkland, LaSalle is a reasonable comparison to what they’ll face in Central Catholic while Woodland Hills and Pine Richland come closest to mimicking Parkland’s abilities. Devante Cross (+2000py, +1000ry) gets considerable attention for his crisp, quick passes on slants and hitches and as their primary running threat. Erik DiGiralomo (+1000) is their no frills running back with super talented Kenny Yeboah (+1000), Nolan Ridgway (+500) and Zack Bross (+300) the receiving threats. Central Catholic counters with a solid corps of receivers in Gunnar Frerotte (+424), Jake McKee (362) and Bricen Garner (302), a pile of running backs in Ronnie Jones (1498), JJ Younger (410), Vinnie Emanuele (866) and quarterback Troy Fisher, who for a sophomore does far more than simply manage the game. He’s completed 55% of his passes for 1412 yards with a respectable 13 to 3 Td to Interception ratio. At 6-4, 200 lbs, he sees the field and runs like a fullback with 546 yards rushing. This gives them more weapons than Parkland but aligns those weapons with Parkland’s strength, their defense. Cross is their homerun threat but without the deep vertical threat and more out of the backfield, he and Yeboah become their only threat, making them more predictable to a star studded Central Catholic defense.

Class AAA
Cathedral Prep 14-1-Imhotep Charter School 14-0……..28.17 Imhotep

Cathedral beat Harrisburg-Bishop McDevitt 38-34 in a great comeback win while Imhotep breezed past Saucon Valley 72-27. The big story in the Cathedral-McDevitt game was the comeback, all the way from a 34-21 half time deficit, banging out 527 total yards of offense along the way. It’s still about running the football in high school and college where 315 yards rushing will win most games. McDevitt (14-2) got 406 total yards but only 41 on the ground. Their talented junior quarterback Tayvon Bowers completed 21 of 40 for 352 yards with 3 touchdowns (Bryce Hall 12/210/2 Tds) and 1 interception while ECP’s sophomore Joe Mischler completed 11 of 23 for 210 yards, also with a 3-1 Td-Pick ratio. Running back Ta’Nauz Gregory rushed for 148 yards and 117 more in receptions. Their opponent this week, Imhotep Charter School, jolted Saucon Valley (14-1) with the big play, scoring on the opening kickoff return of 84 yards by Amir Brown; shades of West Catholic-Southern. A 24-14 1st quarter lead grew to 60-20 at the half….60 to 20!….on the way to a 523 to 302 total yardage avalanche. Running back Mike Waters rushed for 224 yards, scoring 5 touchdowns that featured 76 and 47 yard scoring bursts and a 48 yard reception for 6. QB Nasir Boykin had 130 yards rushing highlighted by scoring runs of 39 and 57 yards.
Imhotep seems to have it all, size, speed and momentum but in this one they are coming up against a team (program) that has great tradition, winning gold as a quad in 2000 and silver in 91 and 99….and obvious talent getting past Canisius-NY, the Wpial rep Thomas Jefferson and Harrisburg-McDevitt. Over the years Cathedral has always been in the hunt. They won’t be in awe a little bit and will represent the best team ICS has played since beating Archbishop Wood 20-14. Beside Wood, there are few linkage games to gage their strength (besides the eye), especially since typically strong Friendship Collegiate Academy (6-6, DC) who they defeated 32-14, is having an off year. Playing and losing to Paramus Catholic 55-22, Gilman 41-0, Bergen Catholic 28-0 and Gonzaga 52-31 will do that! The characteristics Imhotep brings to the table are aspects of heavy passer Bishop McDevitt (3233 yards, 62% comp rate), in having the ability to throw effectively although not as well as the Crusaders, and the best of TJ’s effectiveness at running the ball. The Jags garnered 3690 rush yards with backs at 1729 and 1123 yards rushing. It’s hard finding an opponent on Cathedral’s schedule that has those combined characteristics.

Class AA and A Playoff games with power ratings

Class AA

Aliquippa 15-0-Southern Columbia 15-0……..1.00 Aliquippa

Aliquippa got a game from Martinsburg Central winning 30-21 while Southern Columbia and West Catholic locked horns in a good one with Southern pulling away in the 4th quarter for a 34-19 win. Aliquippa jumped out to a 14-0 1st quarter with Central (13-2) coming back for a 21-14 lead largely on the strength of QB Noah Benton’s (11/26/210) 3 touchdowns. Despite 14 penalties for 140 yards, the Quips came back behind star running back Kaezon Pugh’s 16 points (6-1, 185, sr, 2332ry, Pitt commit), all in the last 8 minutes of the game. Other Quip weapons are QB Sheldon Jeter with 1532 yards passing and 19 Tds primarily to Jassir Jordan who caught 43 passes for 912 yards. So make that two 4th quarter rallies in the last two games allowing them to get past Karns City and Martinsburg Central. That might be a bad idea against this week’s opponent.
Southern Columbia relied on an explosive 4th quarter where they scored 20 unanswered points, rallying from a 19-14 deficit to beat West Catholic 34-19. The rally was aided in part with a unusual number of penalties called against the Burrs (10-5), 13 for 127 yards. 5 interceptions two fumbles and numerous injuries to key personnel also took a toll. QB Josh Evans completed 18 of 29 for 238 yards and 2 Tds with WR Amadou Barry’s 120 yards in receptions and 2 Tds. In the end, Southern had too much as evidenced by their rushing for 314 yards, led by Hunter Thomas’s 115 yards and Blake Marks’s 98 yards. QB Nick Becker was also instrumental, completing 6 of 12 passes for 98 yards and a score while running for 50 yards and 3 more scores. The final pits two of the most storied programs in the state against one another. It also marks Southern’s 14th state title game appearance, their first since 2011. Aliquippa has 4 appearances, winning gold in ‘91 and ‘03, and silver in ‘00 and ‘12. Schedule wise they played a representative Wpial schedule with highly competitive games their last three, beating defending AA champ South Fayette, then a really good Karns City team and Martinsburg Central last week. Meanwhile Southern is battle tested against Selinsgrove, Montoursville, Berks Catholic and West Catholic.

Class A
Bishop Guilfoyle 15-0-Farrell 14-1……..24.57 Bishop Guilfoyle

Defending Single-A champion Bishop Guilfoyle won their 31st straight game bowling over Old Forge 43-13. After falling behind 13-3, they erupted for 40 unanswered points while pounding out 232 rushing yards and 251 through the air. The score was surprising knowing Old Forge (13-2) came in with pedigree, winning their 5th straight Lackawanna Conference Division-3 crown and 3rd straight District-2 title. But Guilfoyle is a monster team, holding them to 158 total yards with quarterback Josh Trybus throwing three touchdowns and running for another. They are big and play physical with a sizeable DL; Logan McGeary (6-2, 315, jr, 95 tackles), Zach Colyer (6-0, 265, sr, 50), Ken Brumbaugh (6-0, 245, jr, 12), Nick Learner (6-1, 310, so, 50). The DEs are Dakota Learner (6-1, 215, sr, 92 tackles) and Andrew Irwin (6-2, 210, jr, 155 tackles). Nice corps of linebackers in Josh Yasulitis (5-11, 205, so, 57 tackles), brother Aaron (5-10, 210, sr, 174 tackles!) and Nathan Callahan (5-10, 195, jr, 34 tackles). Aaron is also the second leading rusher with 1054 yards. Evan Chadbourne leads with 2145 yards. QB Josh Trybus (5-11, 170, jr) completed 64 of 91 passes for 1315 yards, or 20.54 yards per pass completion. Evan Chadbourne from the wildcat slips in there with 22 completions on 18 attempts for 555 yards, a 30.83 yppc! So for a big, physical team, the gang from Altoona can light up the sky, scoring 46ppg. Their defense is breaking records allowing 70 points all year, a 5ppg average.
Meanwhile Farrell was in a war with Berlin Brothersvalley’s best ever team, prevailing narrowly after previous test against Bishop Kearney-NY, Kane and Sharpsville, their only loss that was reversed in the playoffs. Berlin (13-1) gave up a ton of yardage but were fierce in the red zone, holding a 21-12 lead with 4:40 to go. But the Steelers are resilient and explosive, totaling 537 total yards and scoring the last 14 points. The decisive score came on a 76-yd strike to Marcus McCoy from quarterback Alex Myers (180 total yds) who got behind the secondary with :44 to go to seal the 26-21 win. Farrell as always has breakaway speed at multiple positions with running back Braxton Chapman at 1342 yards and Malachi Newell at 668. He is also the leading receiver with 33 catches for 470 yards. The entire team can catch and Alex Myers (5-10, 170, sr-118/208/2044/56%) can get it out there inaccurately with a 19 to 14 Td to Interception ratio. He’s a duel threat with 920 rush yards making them an offensive load at 37ppg. The defense is supported by a line as large as Guilfoyle’s; Tyrese Somerville (6-0, 275, sr, 38 tackles), Wandell Murray (6-4, 285, jr, 67 tackles), Jacob Jackson (6-5, 280, sr, 63) and Romeo Jackson (6-1, 225, sr, 28). It’s a big athletic team that has been just out of sight in Clairton’s shadow more recently although they won gold in 95 and 96 with a silver medal in 1990.

Some changes...

Scott Reed at PV has stepped down. Scott did a great job. His Offensive Coordinator and QB Coach Heist appears to be the front runner. Hard to argue with the development of Zach Zulli, Rushawn Stewart, and Steven Sturm.
Also Joe Powell has been fired at AB Carroll. Wow!!! Carroll has struggled, but Joe is a great guy and has had a lot of success, particularly at AB Wood, but at other places as well. Best of luck to Scott Reed and Joe Powell!

PIAA finals predictions

Who do you guys got

Pitt CC vs Parkland

Imhotep vs Erie Cathedral Prep

Southern Columbia vs Aliquippa

Farrell vs Bishop G

In AAAA I like Pitt CC not because they are WPIAL but the fact that he QB from Parkland is not 100%and that could be a huge factor.

In class AAA I will take the TEP, too big too fast too talented. I did pick these guys to beat South Fayette a few years ago so maybe ECP will prove me wrong again but I would put my chips on the TEP.

In Class AA Aliquippa. Should be a great game but got to go with the team with speed should be a tight game as So. Columbia has been here before albeit class A but they are winners so look for a great game with the Quips winning it late.

Class A Give me the Farrell Steelers.

State AAA semifinals
Imhotep Saucon Valley Imhotep 8.56
13-0 14-0

Saucon Valley looks outmanned here but they are veteran, unlikely to beat themselves and experienced enough to take advantage of any miscues. The closest teams they’ve playedresembling Imhotep are Lehighton 56-20 (a reach) and Bethlehem Catholic 14-6. The team is one-dimensional, getting 83% of yardage on the ground but have a duel threat QB in Zach Thachter (6-0, 180, sr), completing 60 of 94 for 1152 yards with 1122 rush yards. 5-10, 190 pound senior Evan Culver has 2866 yards on 274 carries for 45 Tds. LB Christian Carvis (6-0, 190, sr) and DL Cody Zrinski (6-4, 300, jr) spearhead the D with 124 and 77 tackles respectively. This is their first district title since ’04 with only recent success at 3 winning seasons the last 7 years. But they are essentially home at BASD Stadium in Bethlehem after defeating a decent but unspectacular Selinsgrove team 35-7 last week. They average 44ppg, allow 14. ICS comes in off a 46-16 win against Academy Park after beating two time defending AAA state champ Archbishop Wood. Unlike Saucon Valley, they are a playoff veteran, winning silver in 2013 and in the playoffs the 4th time on 5 years. They are explosive, scoring 45ppg allowing 7, with an all-star cast of (I believe) 10 D1 players. The most underrated part of the team might be QB Nasir Boykin (6-1, 185, jr), completing 63% for 1970 yards with 23 Tds. RB Mike Water (5-10, 195, sr) has 1472 yards for 35 Tds with receivers Nasir Lewis, Aamir Brown and TE Naseir Upshur (6-4, 235, sr, FSU) each over 500 yards (502, 532 and 574 respectively-68 receptions). The line averages 6-4, 312 lbs. (RB Tyliek Raynor is out with a broken ankle) DE Shaka Toney (6-4, 225, sr, PSU) is the big gun on defense with fellow DE Andre Mintze (6-4, 235, sr) and DBs Mike Crawford and Isheem Young. Their size, speed and experience suggests a blowout. But the same was said when 2012’s team was beat by Wyomissing in the semifinal, 35-13. Then there was the following year against South Fayette in the final (!) so we’ll see. Panthers vs Panthers!

Bishop McDevitt Cathedral Prep McDevitt 1.94
13-1 13-1

Harrisburg’s private school bad-ass is back after disposing of fellow Harrisburg conference foe Susquehanna Twp 33-19, the only team to beat them this year. They are once again the best team in District-3, beating Lower Dauphin, Cedar Cliff and AAAA semifinalist Cumberland Valley 41-14. Cathedral’s only loss was their opener in Florida against Wakulla 13-1, 31-14 (ECP allowed 342ry) who is in the 5A final this weekend against Orlando-Bishop Moore, 13-1. Notable wins for the Ranblers include Canisius-NY, Conneaut in D-10 action and Thomas Jefferson (11-3) last week, 28-21. TJ beat Central Valley, Franklin Regional and West Allegheny to reach the Wpial final. But McDevitt is immensely talented (retuned 8-O, 7-D) with the best receiver corps in the state in Kobay White-1210, Bryce Hall-910 and Kyree Calli-759 and one of the more unheralded new QBs on the scene in Tayvon Bowers (6-2, 205, jr) who passed for 3328 yards. McDevitt pulls QBs out of the hat every other year. Check out Matt Johnson at Bowling Green. This is the fourth meeting between McD and ECP since 2010. After winning silver in 10, 11, 13 (Gold in ’95 as an AA) maybe McDevitt finally gets there.

State AA semifinals
Aliquippa Martinsburg Central Aliquippa .83
14-0 13-1
T
The Quips beat the only team to defeat them the last two year when they ended South Fayette’s bid for a third consecutive title beating the previously undefeated Lions 44-38 in the WPIAL final. Aliquippa came into the season just as loaded (average 44ppg) as South Fayette, with 1000 yard rushers, 4-5 D1 players and a veteran defense (allow 17ppg) with at least 9 return starters. Last week’s 27-17 win against Karns City marked the second straight week they beat a undefeated team.
Martinsburg is almost a carbon copy of last year’s 8-3 team with nearly everyone back, 9 on offense, 11 on defense and it shows, with the offense averaging 40ppg and the defense 11. But they haven’t been tested with only a 41-14 win against Tyrone that while 9-3, wasn’t vintage Tyrone football. And they lost to Clearfield (9-2), 19-8. Many D-5/6/9/ teams were rebuilding. This is one of Central’s better teams but Aliquippa is Aliquippa making it looks like a long day for the Scarlet Dragons.
Southern Columbia West Catholic Southern 11.39
14-0 10-4

The premier Double-A program in the state is at it again, smothering everyone including the top teams on their schedule beating Selinsgrove, Montoursville, Hughesville, Berks Catholic and others by an average score of 43-20; 47-19ppg average regular season. The D-yield is a result of a wild game in the D4 final against Montoursville, a 56-50 win, beating the team that eliminated their injury riddled team last year that seemed destined for Hershey. They average 47ppg with a strong QB in Nick Becker (6-2, 200, sr, 62%, 1573, 19/9). 3 backs are at or near 1000 yards rushing, Hunter Thomas (5-10, 185, jr) 1423, Blake Marks (5-11, 175, sr) 936, Jared Torres (5-11, 230, sr) 931. Everyone is back from last year (17 starters) with Coach Jim Roth, one of Pennsylvania’s legends at 379-62 in his 31st year at SCA. They had an unmatched run from 1998 through 2006 winning Silver in 98, 99, 00 and 01, before striking gold in 2002, 03, 04, 05 and 06! In 2011 they got another silver medal. Eat your heart out CB West. West Catholic began the season 1-3, with losses to North Penn, Haverford School and Archbishop Wood. (Strong core of 7-O and 7-D with QB Josh Evans transferring in) Thereon, including the opener they’ve gone 10-1 with an easy run through districts and the quarterfinal last week beating a typically stubborn District-2 Dunmore (12-2) 28-10. Buckle up for this one as Southern is a lot more than the Bucks, good enough to pound and slow things, hoping to negate West Catholic’s speed.

State A semifinals
Old Forge Bishop Guilfoyle Guilfoyle 28.85
13-1 14-0

Remember Old Forge (outside Scranton) two years ago, who put up a fierce battle against North Catholic (16-0, Cardinal Wuerl) in the final losing 15-14 on overtime? Well, they’re back, representing D2 who has a habit of cranking out good stuff at the small school classifications. Once again they come in with a big, physical attack scoring 40ppg, allowing 14. They don’t look as accomplished as the 2013 team (14-2) with a few tell-tale struggles against Lakeland (7-4) 27-24 and the blow-out loss to Lake Lehman (AA, 10-2) 42-13. But they looked good last week routing Bishop McDevitt 51-7.
Defending champ Bishop Guilfoyle is doing what they did last year, pummeling all comers with a monster OL and D1 talent at running back, Evan Chadbourne (5-10, 190, jr, 2010ry) and Aaron Yasulitis (5-10, 210, sr). They’ve evidently replaced losses but did return a corps of 6 to the offenses and 5 to the defense. About that size, the OL includes 6-2 278, 6-1 320, 6-3 310 and 6-2 255.
Berlin Brothersvalley Farrell Farrell 17.58
12-0 13-1

Berlin, PA, that bastion of high school football prowess in District-5 will again leave the valley heading to the big city for a game at Penn Hills High to see what they can do against powerful Farrell out of District 10. Brothervalley High does actually have a thing going for some years now under Coach Doug Paul who has a 53-9 record the last five years. While they’ve evidently fielded fundamentally sound teams, they’ve lacked speed, usually falling to Clairton-like team. But they reversed that this year. Last year saw them come close by many standards hanging with Clairton before losing 44-24. This year’s team got everyone’s attention last week if not before averaging 51ppg and allowing 7 (!) by defeating Clairton’s Bears 35-22. Clairton miscues combined with upgraded speed at the skill positions paved the way.
Farrell is a Clairton clone with 8 back on both sides. They got the monkey off their back that was West Middlesex (8-4) this year after five straight losses, trouncing them 42-0. And they beat previous undefeated Sharpsville (12-1) 26-20 who gave them their only loss and Kane (12-1) in the quarterfinal 27-6 so they come in veteran and brimming with confidence.
