PCL 6A Playoffs

First off, anybody think there's much of a chance of an upset next weekend--either a Judge or a Roman win?

I wasn't surprised that Wood beat LaSalle, but the margin surprised me. How consequential were the two Wood interceptions? It looks from the stats like Madden was the only LaSalle running threat--and he was held pretty much in check (23 runs for 85 yards).

The Prep radio guys said Waller's injury will keep him out for the rest of the year. That's a big loss. What about James Johnson?

what's up with Lasalle ?

went to the Wood vs. Lasalle game last night and I was shocked watching Lasalle. They seemed very slow compared to Wood and not many athletes compared to recent years. Wood was clearly the better team. In the opinion of the Lasalle faithful (who I'm sure will be kicking and screaming about this thread) whats going on with this program ? Is it a one year down period, do they have a good young group coming up, have they fallen behind Wood also (Woods won two years in a row), is it coaching ?

D11 Playoff Previews: #5 Nazareth (5-5) at #4 Freedom (6-4)

Freedom comes in on a 3 game winning streak, including sweeping their Christmas City rivals over the final two weeks of the season by a combined margin of 76-21. They’re riding the high of a 34-0 whooping of Liberty, despite the indefinite suspension of Dashaun Peterson, who led the EPC South in rushing. Backup tailback Cyrus Thompson exploded for 148 yards and 3 TDs in the rivalry win.

Freedom is the most experienced team in the playoff race, with senior QB Joe Young leading the way. It’s been a quiet year for Young, who has thrown for 1,409 yards and 14 TDs, a good, but not spectacular line for the three year starter. Alec Huertas has emerged as one of the best receivers in the Valley, catching 41 passes for 586 yards and 8 TDs. Peterson was the first player in the EPC South to crack 1,000 yards this year, but is done for the year after being suspended by Jason Roeder before the regular season finale. The Freedom o-line is the biggest non-Parkland front, but has struggled with pass blocking all year. Those issues look cleaned up based on recent boxscores, but is something to watch going forward.

Defensively, Freedom plays a 3-3-5, but hasn’t been the turnover monster this season that they have in recent years. With the takeaways limited, they defense has been on the field much longer, and has not been as productive as EPC leading defenses of the past two years. Linebacker Brady Hornbaker is still a monster though, racking up 90 tackles in the regular season, and Huertas is the best defensive back in the conference.

Nazareth has run hot and cold all season, with big wins over Emmaus, Liberty, and Whitehall, but losses to Easton, Freedom, and Bethlehem Catholic. However, the play of quarterback Travis Stefanik has been consistently excellent. The senior three year starter has thrown for 1,956 yards and 20 TDs (against just 6 INTs) and leads the Blue Eagles in rushing with 573 yards and 13 TDs. As a junior, Stefanik put up a 2,000/1,000 season, so this level of play isn’t unexpected, but with the transfer of Jahan Dotson, Stefanik has kept his team afloat. He’s also one of the best wrestlers in the country (ranked as the #27 overall recruit in the FloWrestling rankings for the class of 2017) and choosing between Cornell, Lehigh, Princeton, and Michigan to wrestle. His best weapon on offense is senior Villanova football recruit Julian Liaci. Liaci has 36 catches for 646 yard and 9 TDs. He was a state finalist in the 100 meter dash the last two seasons (finishing 6th and 4th) and ran the anchor leg of Nazareth’s state championship 4x100 relay team last year. All that is to say, he can fly, and is gone when he gets in the open field. An increased. His workload has seen a major increase with Dotson no longer at Nazareth and stopping Liaci is often the focal point of the defense.

The last time these two met, Freedom raced out to a 28-0 lead, but had to hold on for a 34-27 victory as Nazareth scored 21 points in the fourth quarter and just missed an onside kick recovery that would have given them the ball in the final 2 minutes with a chance to take a lead. Stefanik threw for 304 yard and 2 TDs and added 70 yards on the ground, while since suspended Dashaun Peterson ran for 161 yards and 3 TDs, so Freedom will need to replace his production. Joe Young was an efficient 11-17 for 132 yards and a TD and no turnovers. He’ll need to be more prolific on Friday, though if Cyrus Thompson and the Freedom run game can be as dynamic as they were against Liberty, they may not miss Peterson as much as anticipated.

I’ve thought Freedom has the most talent and is the most playoff ready team for most of the year. They’ve way underperformed compared to my expecatations, but in a year where there is no standout team, they’re as capable as anyone of getting hot and going on a run in November. I think they take the first step on Friday with a close but comfortable win over Nazareth.

FINAL: Neshaminy 35 - Pennsbury 0

In the first quarter Neshaminy touched the ball twice and scored both times as Jones hit Tredway on the first TD and then Oleh Manzyk on the next. Pennsbury punted both times they had ball.

The second-quarter, I'd say, Neshaminy went "sleepy time" as they looked like they thought the game was over and they had already won.

Then just before the half, on the last punt by Pennsbury prior to the break, Tredway had a nice return to the Falcon's 19. The 'Skins picked up three on one effort and then missed the next pass. On third down, with the clock at 2 seconds, Jones hit Manzyk and he scored on a terrific effort and with the clock showing 00:00 to make it 21-0 at halftime.

Pennsbury took the kickoff to start the second-half and not much happened on a few offensive exchanges. Tredway then had another good return of a Pennsbury punt to take it to their 30. A few plays later Jones lugged it in from the 5 yard line to make it 28-0 halfway through the third.

Following a few more exchanges the 'Skins put together another drive that ended when Jones hit Manzyk again for the TD on a 15 yard toss to push it to 35-0 with 10 minutes in the fourth. And from there the clock ran down as the clean jerseys came in.

With Jones throwing for four scores he has the new single season record at Neshaminy with 28 so far this season.

As to Pennsbury it looks like their offense is not so good. Their defense can set up and do some stuff, like bottle up the run, but they are having trouble with the pass.

The East……..Still Streakin....(D1, D11, D12)

(Teams presently on a run, having won at least 4 straight)
AAAAAA unless otherwise noted.
* New team
D1….undefeated.
North Penn 9-0;
In District-3 they have a team from Steelton Highspire called the Steamrollers, shortened to the Rollers. This harkens back to Steelton’s steel mill (rolling mill) on the river and original high school (Steelton High) before merging with the town of Highspire located between Steelton and Middletown. That came to mind seeing what the Knights did to teams this year, steamrolling them…. by an average score of 40-13. After beating Tennent last week 52-6, they should “roll” Abington (6-3) this week, despite the Ghosts winning 6 of their last 7. With their new dimension of a legitimate passing attack, it will be fun watching just how far this edition can go in the postseason.
Neshaminy 9-0; The Skins crushed Council Rock South 42-7 last week with Pennsbury up next. They’re 5-4 but won 3 of their last 4 and it’s a fierce rivalry. The Tribe can’t have one of their weird “off” games (right Skinner Man!) against these guys. And since we’re getting to the postseason, here’s a quote from one of the most informed Neshaminy guys on the board….PA2CAMoleskinner, or Skinner Man as I call him.“ I wouldn't bet against the 'Skins at home and in the playoffs. Since 2001 they are 22-1 in post-season action at "Heartbreak Ridge". Assuming they win out this coming Friday the only team they would potentially see on the road (in the chase for the D1 title) is NP.”
Perkiomen Valley 9-0; The Vikings travel to Pottsgrove (6-3) who is coming off a 18-12 loss to Pope John Paul II. With a pile of veterans, PJP2 is the wrong team to take lightly especially as the Trojans are not their usual selves this year. Still, they have some athletes so the Vikings need to bring it.
D1-The rest
Plymouth Whitemarsh 8-1;
Nothing impressive about the way Colonials are winning, beating Cheltenham 26-20 in ot last week and others narrowly but a W is a W and that’s 7 in a row. Quakertown is next (4-5) and they’ve won 3 straight so it could get interesting.
Coatesville 8-1; Beat Bishop Shanahan easily last week 41-14 where some of us thought Shanahan might offer some resistance, something less than a 4 Td loss? The next game is across town where they’ll take on another Streaker at Rustin. How about these young Raiders, and one of Steelton’s finest in Coach Ortega blowing everyone away since the Cumberland Valley loss. Impressive stuff! Maybe they’re not too young.
Rustin 5A 5-4; Red hot Rustin has recovered from the 0-4 start against an easy slate of teams except for the strong win at Great Valley 31-27. Nice! They’ll need that level of performance against Coatesville Friday night or fold if (when?) Coatesville jumps em early.
*Unionville 5A 6-3; Nice rebound winning 4 straight but the losses were telling, losing to Spring Ford, Academy Park and Downingtown East (22-5 won-loss) by a combined score of 97-26. These were not competitive losses. Sun Valley (6-3) is next.
*Interboro 4A 8-1; Interboro brought Academy Park’s undefeated season to an end beating the Knights 29-24. Everyone up and down MacDade Boulevard knows your prospects are always slim in Prospect Park winning against these Bucs. If they win an expected difficult game at Penn Wood (7-2) Friday, they’ll eliminate the Patriots from Del Val contention and win the conference. But if they lose and Academy Park beats Chichester as expected, then its a three way tie with them, Academy Park and Penn Wood.
D11
Pleasant Valley 6A 7-1;
Allentown Central Catholic won the EPC-North at 8-0 but PV and Stroudsburg are locked in a 2nd place battle at 6-1. With PV averaging 51ppg and Stroudsburg 31, you know it will be exciting. And with PV allowing 25ppg and the Mounties 23, it could get downright ridiculous, mimicking an NBA All Star game. Well, not that bad.
*Southern Lehigh 5A 7-2; Here’s where all the hard work and streaks pay off with Southern Lehigh’s 4 game winning streak lifting them to the 2nd seed in the district. They beat Catasauqua last week 42-7 and should do the same at Salisbury Township (2-7) in the finale, entering the postseason on a strong run.
Allentown Central Catholic 4A 8-1; Central Catholic presently have the 2nd seed and the top seed if they can get past Bethlehem Catholic this week. That could be a tall order given Beca’s state of mind following the 42-21 pounding administered by Freedom last week. Nobody expected that.
Pottsville 4A 8-1; The Crimson Tide secured the 3rd seeded ahead of 4th seed Saucon Valley after a hard fought 26-13 win over Jim Thorpe. The final at North Schuylkill (6-3) could be problematic knowing the Spartans have been competitive in every game except undefeated Schuylkill Haven, losing 37-15. Careful Tide….you could get rolled in this one.
Palisades 3A 7-2; The Pirates hold down the 2 seed behind Notre Dame, locked in a 2nd place tie in the Colonial with the Crusaders and Southern Lehigh. But they have their hands full this week against league leader Saucon Valley (8-1, 41-7 last 4 years counting ‘16) who have owned them, winning the last 6 games (10-15) by a cumulative score of 195-47. Last time they played someone this good they lost 41-14 in the opener at Notre Dame.
Schuylkill Haven 2A 9-0; One look at these guys tells you they spend a lot of time in the weight room and it really shows. Playing out of the Schuylkill Valley Div-2, their 4 non-conference opponents were SV Div-1 crossover games with Triple-A’s that served as good prep for Div-2 games (and playoffs) where they are undefeated with a scoring differential of 264 to 13! The Hurricanes are having one of their best years in a long time and hold down the top seed.
Williams Valley 1A 8-1; They earned the 2 seed after winning 7 straight while in 2nd place (7-1) in the Tri Valley a game behind Newport (8-1). They’ll wrap it up Friday at home against Pine Grove (2-7).

D12
St. Joseph’s Prep 7-0;
So, we can forget St. Joe’s beating Roman 22-10 right? As Robert DiNero said in The Deer Hunter….”This is this”, as in 63 to 35, the final score after the Hawks dismantled LaSalle last week. And if “this” is what we can expect from here on out, the Hawks are going to be one tough out. Talking about performance, at 14.6 ypc equaling 278 yards rushing on 19 carries, D’Andre Swift made LaSalle’s defense seem non-existent. Marquez McCray also had a strong outing, completing 9 of 18 passes for 166 yards. Imagine if they can get a few more performances like that out of him! Almost forgot, the win secured the PCL-Red Division title for the Hawks who end the regular season at Widener (wouldn’t that be fun) but against Ryan. Check out “This is this” Login to view embedded media Philadelphia Central 8-0; They are not getting much press but how about these Lancers, taking care of another PPL team with ease beating South Philly 45-22. It was back in the day but Central is still one of the winningest programs in the state and something like 48th in the country, a few slots ahead of the bad ass Rollers of Steelton. Sorry, had to get that in there for the mob back home.
Imhotep 4A 7-0; DNP….They finish at Northeast. Talk about streaking, Imhotep is on a 22 game streak counting last year’s 15-0 run to the Triple-A title. Who can forget the ease at which they beat Academy Park 46-16, Saucon Valley 72-27 and Cathedral Prep 40-3 in the final. Are you kidding me!?
Cardinal O’Hara 4A 8-0; Had a forfeit (Neumann) and finish at home against West Catholic who is on their heels at 4-1 in the Blue Division. The Lions are in first at 4-0. Been a while since these two got together and how about these Lions, coming off back-to-back 1-9 seasons and not having a winner since 2011.
LaSalle 5-3; Still worth a mention despite losing. Lost 63-35 to St. Joseph’s Prep and wow….won’t Archbishop Wood be a difficult game to get ready for emotionally in a return to the scene of last week’s crime at Plymouth Whitemarsh Saturday.
Archbishop Wood 5A 5-2; Don’t know if they’re all the way back from the 0-2 start but they sure look it blowing out their last 5 opponents by an average score of 35-11. LaSalle is next.
John Bartram High 4A 7-1; Cruised to an easy win against Olney 36-0 to enter the AAAA Quarterfinals against Boys Latin (8-1) in a rematch of a game played 3 weeks ago where JB defeated them 30-22.
Northeast 6-1; Still streaking after beating Frankford 28-12 but now face the giant in Imhotep.
Benjamin Franklin 5A 6-2; DNP. Next up is Mastbaum (2-6!) in the AAAAA Quarterfinals Sunday. In a linkage game to the outside world (beyond the PPL) for comparison purposes, Mastbaum lost their opener to Cardinal O’Hara 41-6.

D12 Playoffs

Any confirmed knowledge as to how the D12 6A playoffs will go down? Looking at the PIAA playoff schedule, it looks like the D12/D11 match-up will happen 11/26. Backing it up from there, that would have the D12 final happening on 11/19, semis on 11/12, and 1st round involving 8 teams (?) on 11/4...unless there's one less round of play in D12, there are only 4 teams participating, and the winner gets a bye week. I've seen postings elsewhere that say the PCL champ has been decided, which could mean that there's no continuation of the PCL/PPL playoff separation until the respective champs of each have been decided. Will the 1st round have PCL/PPL match-ups?

D1 QB's

For a couple of weeks now the Inquirer has been posting the statistical leaders. At QB the same 3 have been the top 3 for a few weeks now.

1- Reece Udinski, North Penn
2- Stephen Sturm, Perk Valley
3- Mason Jones, Neshaminy

All three teams are undefeated and look to be the top three seeds in districts.

So...who would you rather have? Who do you think is the best? Who do you think is the most important to their team? Debate.

Western Streakers….D3, D5, D6, D7, D9, D10.

Guess that’s it for the year guys and sorry I had no time to do the West. But here are the teams, with an asterisk (*) indicating new teams to the list and a crossed out team indicating a team that lost.
See the links for playoff information.

2016 All SOL team?

With the playoffs fast approaching, I have been thinking about all of the terrific high school football players I have seen this year (and some last year who are playing this year, but I have not seen them). Since I have seen mostly SOL teams, and mostly SOLN teams, although I have been reading the excerpts of the other teams in SOL on Suburban One Sports.com and other places, I thought I would mention some players who I thought might be up for all SOL honors. I welcome other opinions. I am not sure my stats are up to date.

At QB The top 2 are neck and neck.

North Penn’s Reece Udinski has the best numbers and is the key to the 9-0 Knights record, with 59.9% completions, 2276 yds and 23 TDs to 5 int, and 124 rushing yds

Neshaminy’s Mason Jones has great numbers too, and his team is likewise 9-0. Jones has a 52.4 pct completions, 1956 yds and a gaudy 22 TD to 2 Ints. He has rushed for 115 yds and has two rushing TDs.

Pennridge’s Jagger Hartshorn is my number 3, based primarily on his 1043 rushing yards and 14 rushing TDs. He is the Rams offense. His passing numbers are pedestrian at best, 42.6 pct, 814 yds, 7 TDs and 3 int. I am sure the QB from Upper Dublin probably warrants consideration here as well, but I have not seen him. Freeman of Truman, Moore at Bensalem, Curotto of Souderton, Johns of CBS, are all good players who have not had as much talent around them, and most have missed significant playing time and are further down on my list.

At Running Back:

Abington’s Darryl Davis-McNeil has been the big gun rushing for 1799 yards, a 7.8 ave, and 18 TDs. He is a clear number 1.

Souderton’s Koby Khan is a tough hombre, and has rushed for 1228 yds, 7.4 ave, and 15 TDs. Khan alos has 12 catches for 249 yards and 2 more TDs

Neshaminy’s Will Dogba has taken a back seat to the prolific passing attack, and large leads that have seen his backup get a lot of action, still has managed 1061 yards, a 7.3 ave, and 16 TDs, plus 11 catces for 88 yds and 2 more TDs.

Bensalem’s big fullback, Malcom Carey 605 yds, 6.2, 6 Tds, North Penn’s Nick Dillon, 608 yds, 6.6 yds, 12 Tds and 13 catches for 252 yds, and CBSouth’s Tyler Watson, 637 yds, 6.6, 6 TDs, 8 catches, 179 yds and 2 more scores all warrant consideration for the 4 spot. Noah Wood at Quakertown may figure in there too as his numbers are similar to these 3. There are other fine backs, I think PW has some, but I think I have the top three here.

At Wide Receiver: there are a slew of good ones, especially at Neshaminy and North Penn. The top three are probably Tredway, Johns, and Reid, but Henley, Hubler, Manzyk and Garlick have been terrific as well.

Neshaminy has:

Zach Tredway, 36 grabs, 630 yds, 17.5 ave, 7 TDs

Ohleh Manzyk (actually a TE/Slot receiver), 17 catches, 542 yds, 31.9 av (yes, you read that right!), 8 TDs

Mike Garlick, 25 grabs, 493 yds, 19.7 ave., 5 TDs

North Penn has:

Ricky Johns, 31 catches, 621 yds, 20 ave, 4 TDs

Justis Henley, 28 catches, 529 yds, 18.9 ave, 6 TDs

Jake Hubler, 24 catches, 492 yds, 3 TDs

Abington’s George Reid is the other high end receiver with 23 catches, 495 yds, 17.7 ave, and 4 Tds

CB South’s Cole Braccio has 23 grabs, 318 yds, 13.8 ave, and 3 TDs

Neshaminy’s Corey Joyce (missed several games 3 or 4, with a concussion), 6 grabs, 154 yds, 25.7 ave, 2 TDs and probably fits in the next grouping. Again, I have not seen the America Conference and do not have stats for them.

The OL is hard to say, so I’ll speak for Neshaminy, who I have seen every game only, and mention Council Rock North’s big tackle Pat Bartlet who has had some D1 looks. Neshaminy’s undersized center is technically excellent and warrants consideration for that. G Eddie Parry has battled hard all year and big Chris Wilson, who could use to be meaner is still a load to deal with at 6’5 290.

On Defense, again I will speak mostly for Neshaminy as stats are hard to find, and I only see teams once. With that in mind, Pennridge’s Nick Tarburton and Joe Robinson are excellent, and Tarburton is probably a first teamer. He should be joined by the Norris boys at CB South, Matt and Nate, and Noah Wood at Quakertown has a good reputation. Neshaminy’s Manzyk, Garlick and Dogba are more like safeties, covering receivers and blitzing the QB, mostly Manzyk and Garlick. North Penn’s Johns may fit in here too.

In the secondary, Neshaminy’s trio of Tredway at safety, and Jacob Gordon and Joel Stills at the corner spots has been excellent. Gordon shut out Abington’s Reid, in one on one coverage and has 5 or 6 interceptions. He is 6’2, fast and highly technical, and could be the best CB in SOL. Stills is fast, and closes on the ball quickly. He has many pass defenses and 1 or 2 interceptions. Tredway at 6’4 is huge, fast and excellent in one on one coverage.

North Penn’s Hubler and Henley are very good based on what I saw last year.

Abington’s Reid is excellent and dangerous if he gets a pick.

Last year, Ryan Cuthbert of Pennridge was good as well. This year, Pennridge’s entire secondary was scorched by Neshaminy receivers, particularly Manzyk.

On the D line, Neshaminy’s Kyle Ousterhoudt is their best interior player and the injured Luke Hitchens was their top end.

Of the Kickers, Pennridge’s Mauer was the best I have seen, followed by Neshaminy’s Dylan McDonald.

Maurer was far and away the best punter.

I look forward to seeing other posters adding their SOL top players.

*Delaware Valley 7-2;
Ex-Nittany Lion Keith Olsommer has them on the same page now winning all their games following tough losses to Downingtown East and North Pocono. After ending Williamsport’s undefeated season 3 weeks ago 49-43, they pounded Scranton 43-7 and Wallenpaupack 54-7, keeping the offense purring. That’s a good thing for the closer at home against Abington Heights (6-3) who has gone down competitively in their 3 losses.
Wyoming Valley West 5A 7-2; That’s 5 straight for the Spartans after back-to-back losses to Delaware Valley and Williamsport. Coughlin (5-4) is next.
Scranton Prep 3A 8-1; The closer at North Pocono (7-2) will reveal a lot and decide the Lackawanna FB League’s Division One.
Lakeland 2A 8-1; 5 straight for the Chiefs and won’t the rematch with Dunmore in districts be special! Hate seeing either one of these two eliminated.
Dunmore 2A 9-0; Dunmore is home against Old Forge who is struggling at 4-5 but its still Old Forge who the Bucks will not take lightly.
Northwest 1A 6-3; The Rangers are playing real well as evidenced by their 4 game win streak of which 3 were on the road. And they’re winning the close ones by 1, 3 and 6 points which is good prep for the upcoming district wars.

Selinsgrove 4A 7-2;
The Seals party (5 straight) very likely comes to an end this week with the road trip to undefeated Southern Columbia. While they crushed struggling Mount Carmel (4-5) last week 45-21, the Tigers are a whole other animal, playing above last year’s PIAA AA championship level!
Southern Columbia 2A 9-0; Scary thinking these guys could be better than the team that disassembled Aliquippa in last year’s AA title game 49-14. Whoa! But that’s what they did with a huge offense that averaged 46ppg and a defense that allowed 17. This year’s edition is averaging 49ppg with a D even better at 14ppg, which is why the Seals are in a lot of trouble.
North Penn 2A 8-1; The Panthers are truly on the prowl this year, looking to make real impact in the postseason against Dunmore, Southern (?) and the team they visit this weekend in Wellsboro. Last year’s team had a junior quarterback in Brock Burleigh (6-5, 210) with a big arm and no accuracy, completing 66% for almost 2800 yards but throwing 17 picks. This year he’s at 57% and 1200 yards but just 6 picks with a balanced attack and strong defense allowing 7ppg. They’re better than the team that lost to Wellsboro last year 33-12 but so is Wellsboro so we’ll see.
Wellsboro 2A 9-0; Wyalusing had nothing to offer last week losing 48-0. But this next team, North Penn from nearby Mansfield does, winning their last 5 by an average score of 35-3 including 3 shutouts. Wellsboro is also playing well, at record levels averaging 43ppg and allowing 4. They have 6 shutouts allowing a total of 33 points all year. North Penn is a veteran group but Wellsboro is a big nasty team that really gets after people.
South Williamsport 2A 8-1; The Mounties are a nice little Double-A on a tear, winning their last 7 straight games. But when your only loss is to Danville’s Ironmen 29-13 who lost to Southern Columbia 47-7, it lets you know where you stand in the pecking order. Still, they won the Heartland Athletic Conference-III and end the regular season against a scrappy bunch from the Tri Valley Conference in Line Mountain (6-3).
Sayre 1A 7-2; 7 straight wins since the 0-2 start says the Redskins are rolling. They’re doing it behind a strong OL and the exploits of running back Tylor Belles who has 1412 yards on the season. Last week’s win over Col-Mont Tech snagged their first conference title (Northern Tier-Small School) since 1980 and the #1 seed! But they have a tough one this week traveling to AAAA Athens (6-3) who are battling for the 4th seed and right to travel to Selinsgrove in the first round. Some prize!
