WPIAL 5A loses 4 teams (Kiski, West Allegheny, Latrobe, Connellsville) and gains 4 teams (Hempfield, Norwin, Baldwin, Plum). I am working under the assumption that Aliquippa won't be forced to play in 5A, a concept which I consider insanity. They should win their appeal. Geographically these new teams should move easily into the existing conferences. Here is what makes sense to me:

“I believe our overall season went great, we had our ups and downs but I really do believe we all grew closer together as a family and learned very valuable lessons. I feel like all of this will lead us to a spectacular next season. I also believe that all the hard work in the weight room and at practices with our great coaching staff really helped me achieve the season that I wanted.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“The plan for now until next season is to work on every aspect of my game. From getting stronger, faster, improving my footwork, etc. I will also be hitting the weight room a lot with my teammates so we can all grow and be the best version of ourselves during the rest of the season.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I truly think that our team will be an exception next season. We have a great group of guys that are basically all best friends with one another. All of us are very close and I think that’ll lead to major successes for us. We also have lots of young returning talent coming back which will be great.”

“I believe Mount Lebanon will be our toughest competition next year. Extremely talented team that made it all that way this year.”

“I personally think the toughest player our team will face off against next year is Sonny Styles out of Pickerington, Ohio. Great football player with size and strength.”

“Yes, I'd love to play college football. That has been a goal of mine since I've been a child.”

“I’ve been in touch with colleges like Kent State, Toledo, Virginia Tech, Harvard, and UPenn.”

“Yeah I've made college trips down to Kent state, Virginia Tech, and also Toledo.”

“My favorite college growing up has always been Pitt. A lot of my siblings and other relatives have gone to Pitt. I’ve also always loved their football program.”

“I thought our team did really well. Our team went through a lot with our coach’s passing. We fell short of the ultimate goal, but we showed some toughness and grit that we can build on for next year.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Right now I’m focusing on basketball and baseball. Once those sports end I’ll get back to working out for football.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel that our team can be a contender. We have a lot of good players returning and when we put everything together we are a very good team.”

“Bishop Canevin. They just won the WPIAL so they are definitely the team to beat.”

“I would say Capone Jones from Clairton. He is very mobile and has a good arm. He was definitely a tough player to face last year.”

One of the two or three best tournaments in the country is happening this weekend in Delaware. Pennsylvania strongly represented with Bethlehem Catholic, Nazareth, Malvern Prep, Notre Dame, Saucon Valley, Faith Christian Academy, Waynesburg, Central Dauphin, Downingtown West, The Hill School, Penncrest, and Germantown Academy.

Quarters are going on right now. Here are some PA highlights.

Becahi freshman Nathan Desmond has not allowed a point yet and continues the stellar start to his career. He was a finalist at Ironman last weekend (the best in season high school tournament nationally) and has three pins and a shutout so far. He is the nephew of Andy, Matt, and Seth Ciasulli, who combined for 8 top 5 finishes, 5 finals appearances, and 3 state championships for Easton. Notre Dame sophomore Ayden Smith just got knocked out of quarters and needs one more win to medal.

Biggest story of quarters so far is Nazareth freshman Tahir Parkins (a Stroudsburg transfer) knocked off returning New Jersey state champ Danny Jones of Delbarton. Parkins has now beaten the 7, 10, and 2 seeds on his way to semis. Parkins will wrestle Lake Highland Prep (FL) Ethan Rivera, who is originally from Pocono Mountain East and a club teammate of Parkins with Dark Knights. Malvern Prep’s Tommy Link is in the other semi against top seed Leo Deluca of Blair.

Bethlehem Catholic junior Cael McIntyre knocked off third seeded Jack Consiglio of Malvern Prep 4-3 for a semifinal spot. Notre Dame’s Adam Schweitzer and Fath Christian Academy’s fabulous freshman Gauge Botero (who pushed top seed Marc Anthony McGowan of Blair 3-2 on the championship side) are still alive for medals, as is Consiglio.

Saucon has potential state champs at 172 and 189, so Pfizenmayer had to wrestle up 40 pounds last week at 215 just to make the lineup - where they’ll also have a returning state medalist coming back from injury in January. Pfizenmayer made quarters here and needs to win one more match to medal. No other Pa guys alive.

Nick Feldman of Malvern, thr top pound for pound wrestler in the country, has bonuses his way through the tournament. It’s an all Pa match up in the other semi with super Nazareth sophomore Sean Kinney (the first freshman state finalist ever in Pa at heavyweight) taking on Waynesburg’s Noah Tustin.

Urban Meyer to be Made of Honor.

Here's my take on the WPIAL 6A. Haven't had as much time to talk to people about these teams, but I think the ordering is roughly correct.

1. PCC: PCC is the defending WPIAL champ and return a boatload of talent led by lineman Donovan Hinish (ND commit). They return several other defensive standouts including Specca at LB (ND Offer), and Barron and Younger in the secondary. Newcomers to watch on D are a talented DE (don't have his name, but in a long line of great DE's) and Xaviar Thomas who is only a freshman. On offense, they return starting QB Wehner (Sophomore) but are reloading on the perimeter. Mars transfer Peter Gonzales figures to help at WR. The key addition may be adding P-R's old QB coach Jochem to modernize their offense.

2. NA: The will be solid as usual and their defense should be excellent being led by Porter at DE (son of ex-steeler) and Dinkins in the secondary or OLB. Also, a skill player to watch is Alualu (son of current steeler). Otherwise, they look like a typical NA team - well coached, play hard, and like to run the ball. With that being said, I have heard that they have the best skill guys on offense they have had since 2017. Not sure who the QB will be though and the biggest question is will Coach Walker let them open it up at all.

3. Lebo: This is supposed to be Lebo's year. Lef by 3 year starter Daniels at QB, the also have Heidenrich (sp? Navy commit) at WR. Coach Palko has had 3 years to install his system and they are counting on seniors to help them break through to the next level. (They beat PCC last year in the regular season, then reverted to form and got beat handily by them in Playoffs.) Key loss for them was their best OL (not sure name) who tore is ACL in Lacrosse this spring.

4. Seneca Valley: Seneca Valley's biggest addition are the OC Lehmeier and OL Sasson from P-R. They figure the help juice up SV's generally staid offense. SV will be HUGE at skill averaging around 6'2 190, but lack a proven triggerman. Also a burner in Yurich who played LB last year but figures to play RB in 2021. Also, Lambert at H back may be their best looking specimen at 6'3" 250. I think they will be better, but everything I hear is that they are a year away. If OC Lehmeier and OL Sasson stay another year, look for 2022 to be the year for them to break through and win a WPIAL.

5. Canon-Mac: Don't really know much. Lost a good senior class but will struggle against big boys I think. Well coached though.
6. Buter: Same old, except Kleinbacher (sp?) at TE is a MAC level prospect.
