what’s up with ridley defense?

coach wood owns 3 of only 4 Ridley defenses to ever give up over 18 points against per game. 2018, 2019, 2021 Ridley defenses are statistically the worst in Ridley history, accompanied by 1953, where 20+ ppg were scored against in each season. To put that in perspective, since 1934 Ridley defenses have averaged less than 14 points against in 72 seasons. There have been 88 seasons of Ridley football, not counting 2022; coach woods defenses have ranked 88, 87, 85, 81, 78 and his best, 65.

In their last 5 games Ridley has allowed 187 points. As said, Ridley has played 88 seasons of football. In 81 of those seasons, defenses allowed 179 total points or less. So in 5 games Ridley has allowed more points than they gave up in 81 other complete seasons.

Dennis deckers average points against was 12.2. Battys, as head coach, not d coordinator, was 13.8. Waller, 10.5. McNich, 8.1. Woods is 20.9.

In 70 games, Wood defenses have 11 shutouts. Basically a shutout every 7 games. Decker had 20 in 85 games; 1 every 4 games. Waller, 23 in 100; 1 every 4. McNich, 77 in 256; 1 every 3 games.

Not counting 2022, wood has 6 complete Ridley seasons, with a total of 1,420 points against. Less points were scored against Ridley in the entire decades of the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, plus between 2000 - 2009 and between the 6 seasons of 2010 - 2015 (899 points). Basically, 2016 - 2021 has been the most heavily scored against 6 season era, even compared to every total decade since the 1930s, in Ridley history.

Point is, even if Ridley can score at will, they won’t be successful if they can’t stop their opponent. Every game against a tough opponent will become whoever has last possession wins. And when they can’t score, like against coatesville last year, they’re in serious trouble.

District-3 Top 30 (Aug 31st, 2022)

District 3 Top 30 (Aug 31st 2022)

(The number in parenthesis is last week’s rankings)
1 Harrisburg 0-0 6A (1)
Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
No change in Harrisburg’s status as the game with St. Vincent Pallotti of Maryland was cancelled because of lightening and will not be rescheduled. So they’ll open at home against Delaware Valley (0-1, D2, 5A) who lost to Mosley-FL (1-0, 6A, mid-level power like DV) 24-23 on a fumble into the end zone while driving for a score as time expired. DV is a power team that came up a little short against Mosley’s athletic group and will likely do the same against Harrisburg. But, Harrisburg has had some recent issues with teams that like to just line up and bash you, noting State College last year in a 15-13 win, then Wilson’s ground pounders in a 14-10 win the week before losing to SC (rematch) in the playoffs 16-13. And. DV is one game up on the Cougars and well coached by Keith Olsommer, looking to prevent a 0-2 start. At 90-29 the last 10 and 46-13 the last 5 years, they’re a serious program.
2 Bishop McDevitt 0-1 4A (2) Mid Penn-Keystone Division
No change for McDevitt in the rankings who lost to 5A power Imhotep Charter School of Philadelphia 19-14 at the inaugural Peach Bowl Showcase in Chambersburg. Pretty good stuff here with Imhotep getting a 13-0 lead at halftime with McDevitt coming back strong but short, winning the second half 14-6. Two things stood out about ICS offensively. Running back Jabree Wallace-Coleman is a good one with 22 carries for 138 yards (82-yd Td sprint 2nd qtr), and quarterback Mikal Davis isn’t bad either, completing 11 of 17 passes (11-yd Td toss) for 79 yards, rushing for 62 on 7 carries. His escape ability is phenomenal! They rushed for 223 yards. The defense was special with situational substitution! That’s pretty difficult to compete against. Stone Saunders stood out for McDevitt, completing 21 of 41 for 280 yards with Tyshawn Russell snagging 8 for 155 yards. But they had no ground game, getting a meager 88 yards rushing. Jaire Rawlinson had a 4th quarter 41-yard fumble return for their final score. West Toronto Prep is next after losing to Erie High 7-0 while ICS plays at Archbishop Spalding (0-1, MIAA-A) who lost their opener to Don Bosco Prep 48-28, yielding 532 total yards. Looks like DBP is back (8-5 last year) with a veteran team while Spalding graduated most of last year’s 10-1 squad.
3 Cumberland Valley 1-0 6A (3) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Cumberland Valley hung on to beat Manheim Township 31-27 in Mechanicsburg behind multi-talented Isaac Sines who threw for 104 yards and 2 touchdowns, rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown and booted a 29-yard field goal. The win came against one of their chief challengers for district honors. Much is expected of CV as well, returning a veteran crew for their first road trip and another stiff contest in Central York (1-0) who made it look easy beating Central Dauphin last week 36-19. Cumberland Valley’s head coach Josh Oswalt was Central’s head coach before taking the job at CV in 2020. About scheduling, there can only be a handful of PA teams with an opening schedule more difficult than CV’s (first half actually) who after playing Central York have Spring-Ford, Central Dauphin East and Harrisburg.
4 Manheim Township 0-1 6A (6) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 1
Although they lost, the Streaks rose in the rankings after a strong showing on the road at Cumberland Valley where they dominating in first downs 22-7 and total yards 403 to 268. Impressive. They also came back from a 10-0 first quarter deficit, scoring 20 second quarter points to make a game of it before falling 31-27. Last year’s sophomore sensation Hayden Johnson picked up where he left off completing 30 of 47 passes (64%) for 342 yards while throwing 4 touchdowns. They’re going to win a lot of games and the LL-1 easily unless Wilson does an about face. Up next is some payback against Dallastown who beat them last year in a wild one 41-38. They did not show well in their opener at home losing to Hempfield 30-13 and it only gets tougher here against Township.
5 Wyomissing 1-0 3A (7) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 4
Wyomissing had no trouble handling rebuilding Kennard Dale 49-0. They was overwhelmed everyway a team can be overwhelmed with Wyomissing rushing for 278 yards while piling up 421 total yards. Matt Kramer led all rushers with 68 yards and 3 touchdowns as nine Wyomissing backs got in on the fun. The Rams were held to 72 total yards of offense by Wyo’s suffocating defense. Here’s an accomplishment; they go for their 34th consecutive regular season win Friday at Pottsville (0-1) who were routed by powerful Jersey Shore 55-12. The Tide is rebuilding but wow; that’s a statement by Jersey Shore. They (JS) were eliminated in last year’s 4A semifinal by Aliquippa 41-16. But with everyone back, they are definitely in the 4A conversation before handing the title to McDevitt or Aliquippa.
6 Central York 1-0 6A (13t) York Adams, Division 1
What looked to be a matchup of 6A power teams didn’t materialize despite a scoreless first quarter when Central York rolled to a 36-19 home win against the Central Dauphin Rams. CY’s Nasir Still took over at quarterback for the graduated Beau Pribula and did well, throwing a 66-yard scoring strike to Parker Hines and rushing for a 40-yard score, ending with 111 rush yards. Running back Juelz Goff was close to unstoppable, rushing for 164 yards and 3 scores on 26 carries. CD’s new quarterback KeyRon Plummer completed 6 of 11 passes for 122 yards including a 51-yard touchdown to Devin Shepherd. They had 217 yards rushing. This week’s game is against another storied Mid Penn team in Cumberland Valley, coming off their big win against Manheim Township. Central won last year 21-3 in a tight one on a couple late scores with this one promising to be even more exciting with a lot more scoring.
7 Steelton Highspire 1-0 1A (9t) Mid Penn-Capital Division
Steel High escaped with a big win against one of PA’s finest defeating Bishop Canevin in the Peach Bowl Showcase in Chambersburg 21-14. Canevin drove to the Rollers’1-yard line with under 20 seconds left in the game where a bad snap on third down pushed them back to the 5-yard line. Here, in the stress and panic of diminishing time, Canevin’s quarterback Kole Olskewski spiked the ball on 4th down with 10 seconds on the clock. Game over. This, after outgaining SHHS 430 total yards to 256 yards. Jakhai Noss led the Rollers with 72 yards on 22 carries, with Ron Burnette getting 54 on 9 carries. Noss had a monster game with a 59-yard Td catch and an 85-yard Pick-6 in the second quarter that proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. Canevin’s Marquese Carter led all rushers with 158 yards. This week sees the Rollers in their home opener against one of the top Double-A teams in the state in Westinghouse (1-0) of the Pitt City League who just throttled Clairton 40-8. Repeat, Clairton, 40-8!
8 Carlisle 1-0 6A (9t) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
Carlisle opened the season with a 28-14 win at home against feisty Mechanicsburg by racing out to a 14-0 lead at the half then trading scores the second half. It was an even game through the air with Mechanicsburg’s Jeff Lougee completing 13 of 22 for 170 yards and Carlisle’s Louis Shank’s completing 6 of 10 for 152 yards. The Herd separated themselves on the ground outrushing the Wildcats 142 to 76 yards with a much quicker team and physical approach. We’ll see if they can keep it going this week against a Governor Mifflin team coming in with a lot of attitude after dropping their home opener last week to Spring Ford 21-10.
Heads up D1 crowd; the Rams crank out quarterbacks the way Ridley used to in Chad Brubaker’s offense this year (and every year) featuring sophomore Matt Zoellers throwing to his older brother Zach Zoeller for 2 of his 3 Td tosses and 236 yards passing. Total O was 349 to Mifflin’s 246 with the D also making a statement.
9 York-William Penn 0-1 6A (8) York-Adams Division 1
The Bearcats lost to Woodland Hills 28-24 in the Peach Bowl Showcase, failing to recover from a 28-8 deficit at the half!? But, they are explosive, and came roaring back in the second half only to fall short at the 2-yard line. Here, highly regarded Jaheim White was nailed by Kellen McDonough, their huge 6-5, 270-pound tackle for a 2-yard loss with seconds remaining. White (WV) got his, rushing for 122 yards on 19 carries. But Woody’s running back was a little more, with Elijah Nesby getting 127 yards and 3 scores on 15 carries. York’s QB Sam Stoner had 218 yards passing with a 2-yard keeper for 6 and a 51-yard Td toss. But the D that let them down last year at 30ppg let them down again here. It doesn’t get any easier this week traveling to LL’s most improved program over the last few years in Landisville to play Hempfield, fresh off their 30-13 road win at Dallastown.
10 Central Dauphin East 1-0 6A (10) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
East High recovered from a slow start falling behind Reading 12-7 in the first quarter before rallying for 24 unanswered points in the next two quarters for a 31-12 win. The game was called at the end of the third quarter because of lightening. Looks like a youth movement with a sophomore quarterback and running back standing out. Demaj Jalloh completed 16 of 24 passes for 167 yards and a 14-yard Td toss to Izayah Hitchcock, while Nehemiah Ewell rushed for two scores and 120 yards on 11 carries. Reading’s quarterback Amier Burdine was the Knight’s offense, completing 8 of 14 passes for 145 yards (2/1) and rushing for 94 yards of the teams 247 total yards. Good for Reading showing a pulse. East High takes to the road Friday for a game with LL-1 member Cedar Crest (1-0) who struggled beating Abraham Lincoln of the Philly Pub last week 21-12.
11 Wilson 1-0 6A (5) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 1
Wilson dropped out of the Top 10 after getting routed by Roman Catholic 46-15 at home. By rout, check out Roman’s 458 total yards of offense to Wilson’s 130. Next week’s game is at Central Dauphin where one of these historic state powers will be 0-2 by the end of the day.
12 Shippensburg 1-0 5A (12) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
Ship won its home opener beating Cedar Cliff 28-10. They’re home this week to Big Spring who is coming off a disappointing home loss to Greencastle-Antrim 28-13.
13 Governor Mifflin 0-1 5A (4) Lancaster Lebanon League, Section 2
Like Wilson, Governor Mifflin also fell out of the Top 10 after dropping their home opener to Spring Ford 21-10. Top 10 teams shouldn’t lose at home! They’re at Carlisle where they could rebound knowing Spring Ford is no slouch. Neither is Carlisle so buckle up for this one with the Carlisle program re-emerging as the Mustangs rebuild.
14 Exeter Township 1-0 5A (14) Lancaster-Lebanon Section 2
Exeter got out the gate well routing Daniel Boone 35-0 and are home against Boyertown where they always roll.
15 Manheim Central 1-0 4A (18) Lancaster Lebanon Section 2
The Barons embarrassed West Chester East at East 56-7. More stats for the D1 crowd. East had only 2 first downs, 101 rush yards and 20 passing to Manheim’s 355 total yards (214r, 141p). Things must be really bad at East as the Barons are in total rebuild mode. They’re home vs Immaculata-NJ Friday.
16 Berks Catholic 0-1 3A (11) Lancaster Lebanon-Section 4
Berks Catholic was rocked at home by D4 power Loyalsock Township 34-21 who looks like a legit 3A with a veteran team and loads of skill. They out-gained BC 469 to 287 yards! So add them to the list of quality 3A teams for this season. BC will try to rebound this week at Executive Education Academy of Philadelphia.
17 Hempfield 1-0 6A (NR) Lancaster Lebanon Section 1
The Black Knights beat Dallastown 30-13 at Dallastown and now get York at home. This one will test Hempfield’s skill and speed while York will be taking on one of the upcoming D3 programs following a heartbreaking loss to Woodland Hills last week.
18 Central Dauphin 0-1 6A (13t) Mid Penn-Commonwealth Division
CD got off to a bad start running into a solid Central York team on the road, losing 36-19. They’re home to Wilson who beat them last year 27-21.
19 Northern York 1-0 5A (21) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
Northern rolled over Red Land 45-6 at home and should do the same this week in another homer against Chambersburg.
20 Lampeter Strasburg 0-1 4A (19) Lancaster-Lebanon Section 4
Lampeter Strasburg got off on the wrong foot being upset at home to always dangerous Solanco 40-35 and are home this week to Penn Manor, a team they beat last year 31-0.
21 Dallastown 0-1 6A (15) York Adams, Division 1
Here’s a mild surprise with Dtown getting upset at home to Hempfield 30-13 with a tough one this week at Manheim Township where the Streaks are looking to avenge last year’s narrow loss to the Wildcats and the 4-point loss to Cumberland Valley last week.
22 Cedar Cliff 0-1 5A (20) Mid Penn-Keystone Division
Cedar Cliff took one on the chin against a veteran Shippensburg team losing 28-10 on the road. And they better stay focused this week against neighboring Mechanicsburg who will pound on you with a dual threat quarterback and strong running back.
23 West Perry 1-0 3A (24) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
West Perry’s veteran group beat Susquenita 35-6 and will roll again this week against Newport, a team they defeated last year 49-0.
24 Cocalico 1-0 5A (NR) Lancaster Lebanon Section-4
Cocalico unloaded on Warwick last week, rushing for 355 yards in a 42-27 upset. They’ll need another strong effort this week to win at Solanco who just upset Lampeter Strasburg 40-35 at Lampeter!
25 Warwick 0-1 5A (16) Lancaster-Lebanon League, Section 2
Warwick was shocked at Cocalico 42-27 last week and home this week to Ephrata who is another dangerous opponent.
TIE
Cedar Crest 1-0 6A
(23) Lancaster Lebanon Section 1
Cedar Crest won their opener last week in a struggle against Abraham Lincoln 21-12. They’re home this week against CD East who is a BIG step up from the Philadelphia Public League!
26 Boiling Springs 1-0 4A (NR) Mid Penn Colonial Division
The Bubblers return their lines that helped them pound out a win at Littlestown 66-18 with Bermudian Springs up next.
27 Gettysburg 1-0 5A (NR) Mid Penn Colonial Division
The Warriors return a lot of bodies for their first year back in the Mid Penn stating off well beating Hershey 25-14 with neighbor New Oxford in next.
28 Spring Grove 1-0 5A (NR) York-Adams Division 1
The Rockets opened with a 46-14 win against Waynesboro with more to come this week at Kennard Dale.
29 Solanco 1-0 5A (NR) Lancaster Lebanon Section 3
The Mules upset Lampeter Strasburg 40-35 despite allowing 433 total yards of offense. They're home against Cocalico next.
30 Mechanicsburg 0-1 5A (22) Mid Penn-Colonial Division
The Wildcats were competitive in losing on the road to Carlisle 28-14 and have another tough one this week at home against Cedar Cliff.

Battle at the Beach - PA vs NJ

Aug 26
Downingtown West (5-5 last year with a few games that could have gone either way)
vs
Highland Regional (4-5 last year, finished with a 1-4 stretch; not sure on the level of competition here)

Neshaminy (2-8 last year? WTF? A couple of breaks here and there could have put them 0-10. Tough opponent to start 2022)
vs
Ocean City (11-2 last year and returning a stud QB. Millville pummeled them, but they did that to most teams last year)

Aug 28
Thomas Jefferson (8-3 last year with two of the losses to Belle Vernon who lost 28-13 to Aliquippa in the playoffs)
vs
Millville (12-1 with some major blowout wins. Won their last game on 12/5, so it must have been one of the 328 state championship games in NJ)

NOTE: Archbishop Wood was original scheduled to play Red Bank Catholic on Aug 27, but that game is now St John Vianney vs Red Bank.

8/27 Imhotep at Bishop McDevitt

4A McDevitt will play 5A Imhotep this year in a game featuring some of the best FBS-FCS talent in the state. It's quite a headliner as both are two of the top teams in the state, perhaps beyond.
I'm working on a writeup that will mention the game and other games between District 3, District 12 and District 1, maybe a few others.

I believe the date was available since McDevitt and Harrisburg still can't work out a game. To some, the game has already lost luster with McD moved to the burbs. Before, they were two blocks apart and it was for the City Championship, McDevitt literally walking to Severance field to play them. But a few buds from HACC and PSU, former McDevitt players from the 80s tell me I'm full of it, that it will always be special.

It's a beautiful absolutely modern stadium and only and a hour and a half from Ridley-Delco, less from above the city. Should be a heck of a game.

Coatesville 28 Pennsbury 6

Snyder's Falcons are not ready to play with elite of District 1 just yet. Running hybrid Wing-T/Flex-bone (double wings w/motion, upright/deeper FB, SE w/short split - same formation all 39 plays, IIRC), offense was about as productive as early last year, gaining only 83 yards (on 36 plays) before scoring on final drive against Red Raiders' second unit D. FB G. Mulbah finished with 15 carries for 57 yards. QB Shane McGurrin was 3 of 6 for 93 yards. One play after Mulbah's 69-yard TD run was called back for downfield holding (and subsequent unsportsmanlike, apparently on Snyder), McGurrin hit WB Nate Beighley wide open on blown coverage for 76-yard TD on PHS's final offensive play. Defensively, PHS forced 3-and-out punt on first drive, but CHS QB Susi followed that up with two long read-option TD runs later in 1st quarter. A long 2nd quarter TD pass from Susi where WR caught comeback, turned outside and outran D made it 21-0 at half. A long 3rd quarter drive and short TD run made it 28-0.

Coatesville was overall too big and fast for Pennsbury to contend with. Should get better sense of where Falcons fall in District 1 pecking order after Tennent and CR South in weeks 2 and 3.
