Mid State Football Top 20 (1-10)….Aug 29, 2018

1 State College 6A 1-0
State dominated this one, racing out to a 35-0 half time lead in an opening day 35-12 win against Mifflin County. This year’s version seems faster and deeper than last year’s with a pile of reserves playing from the second quarter on. Their burners are Keaton Ellis (PSU) and Isaiah Edwards to name a few of the 7 that carried the ball. Senior Qb Tommy Friberg completed all 7 of his passes for 148 yards as they dominated every category, evidenced by their 452 to 190 total yard advantage. Got a challenge this week in St. Augustine Prep (0-0) of Richland-NJ (West Jersey-Continental) who was an uncharacteristic 5-5 last year, hailing from just east of Vineland. At 39-12, they’re a quality program but shouldn’t be confused with the bad boys from northern Jersey, teams such as Don Bosco Prep, St. Joseph Regional, Bergen Catholic and Paramus Catholic who are well to the Northwest of Manhattan above Hackensack. Played a lot of youth last year and were a few points from being 8-3. For reference/linkage, a few of their losses were to Malvern Prep 27-7, SJR 22-10 and Bergen Catholic 56-21. Most of the backfield returns (Qb, Rbs) and most of the D featuring good stuff at LB in Joe Bonczek (6-1, 220, sr, 122 tackles) and Shane Quest (6-2, 225, sr, 58 tackles). It’s a hike getting to Richland in what looks like a real test for both.

2 Manheim Central 5A 1-0
The Barons showed they are again one of the top teams in the state by dismantling Harrisburg’s Susquehanna Township 44-0 last week. This one saw them outgained 304 to 93 total yardage in their home opener. They showed a balanced attack with Qb Evan Simmons completing 6 of 12 for 152 yards and 3 scores with Rb Tyler Flick netting 122 yards on 22 carries and 2 Tds. Wide out Colby Wagner pulled down 3 for 104 yards. Special teams and defense contributed with a safety and a 27-yd pick 6. Simmons showed big play capability with 29 and 60 yard Td strikes and a 45 yard scamper for another 6. All us D guys love where Hanna was held to 96 total yards! It ratchets up some this weekend going to Landisville to play Hempfield’s rebuilt Black Knights. Barons and Knights!

3 Bishop McDevitt 4A 1-0
They felt each other out for a quarter then it was lights out with McDevitt’s quick striking offense building a still competitive half time lead of 27-14 before taking charge with two scores in the 3rd quarter to gain a 41-14 lead in a 48-21 blowout of Cumberland Valley at CV! That’s a shout out to the 4A classification across the state as this team demonstrated they are the real deal. Qb Chase Diehl completed 18 of 24 for 284 yards while running backs T’nysis Becker and Dedrick Tinker gauged them for 110 and 105 on the ground. Nazir Burnett had 8 catches for 136 yards as McDevitt dominated gaining 619 yards to the Eagles 207. It takes a special team to put it to the Eagles like that; 2017 Harrisburg 56-14, 2015 McDevitt 41-14. Up next is Gettysburg (1-0) who is way outclassed in this one.

4 Berks Catholic 4A 1-0
Berks jumped out to a 31-0 3rd quarter lead then cruised to an easy 31-7 win with reserves finishing out against rival Exeter Township. Berks outgained them 286-133 on the ground with Abdul MacFoy getting 122 yards on 8 carries and FB/LB Brandon George at 92 yards with 8 carries. Central Dauphin is next in the Saints home opener while CD is coming off a solid win against another Reading power Wilson, 23-7. This is their first ever meeting. And while they’ve experienced big game atmosphere with recent playoff forays against McDevitt, Cathedral Prep twice and Southern Columbia, they have never played a program/team of this caliber in the regular season. Conversely, the Rams are all about big game encounters in the regular season and post, with an annual diet of State College, Cumberland Valley, Harrisburg, Wilson and Manheim Township. Doesn’t mean they’re going to win, but you can bet they won’t blink.

5 Middletown 3A 1-0
Everyone knew the Blue Raiders were good but maybe not by a score of 42-14 against Lower Dauphin where hey outgaining the Falcons 334 to 136 on the ground. Their tandem backs of Jose Lopez and Richie Sykes totaled 176 and 162 yards rushing respectively. They travel to Dillsburg this week to play Northern (1-0) who eked out a 20-14 win over East Pennsboro last week. They need to keep their mind right against the Polar Bears (great unis!) before their historic home opener against Bishop McDevitt. That will be SRO with small town Middletown looking to get some taking on the city boys from McDevitt.

6 Central Dauphin 6A 1-0
As is often the case at CD under Coach McNamee, special teams and defense paved the way with Derek Krug kicking a 1st quarter 30-yd field goal and DE Marques Holton (6-0, 225, jr) motoring 48 yards with a 2nd quarter scoop and score to take a 10-0 half time lead. The entire D-front was impressive (team strength coming in) especially last year’s sophomores DE Amir Walton 6-0, 215 and Marques Holton 6-0 225. Wilson had to fling it since they couldn’t run (109-yds), throwing 28 times while completing 18 for 178 yards. The Rams put it up 8 times while rushing for 187 yards in a satisfying 23-7 win over always feisty Wilson. This week’s game at Berks Catholic in their first ever appearance against them will help clarify the district’s 4A picture knowing what McDevitt did to CV last week. Reading schools Holy Name and Central Catholic merged to form one legitimate bad ass of a 4A as evidenced by last year’s run. Should be a war!

7 Cumberland Valley 6A 0-1
Talk about a power outage! The Eagles suffered a major one at home last week going down hard to one of the top teams in the state, losing to Bishop McDevitt 48-21. McDevitt has so many weapons! There’s not much positive to take from it when you’re out-yardaged 619 to 207 and held to 76 yards rushing. But hey, it’s CV who has been down this road before. That’s a good thing with the next three just that, on the road at Central York, then Coatesville and Central Dauphin before coming home to Harrisburg.

8 Harrisburg 6A 0-1
Coatesville’s win at Harrisburg last week left no doubts they are the leading contender to grab the gold this year after a dominating 37-6 win at Severance Field. There were bright spots for sure with the young Harrisburg team, especially Qb Kane Everson who transferred in from CD East to account for 106 yards rushing, along with the defense upfront that did well knowing the offense was of little support, holding Coatesville to 112 rush yards. But Ricky Ortega tore them up through the air with 11 completions netting 274 yards. They move on to Reading where the Knights are reeling after a 63-16 shellacking by York High’s Bearcats. A big win here will put the wind back in their sails before coming home for a game against reinvigorated Cedar Cliff.

9 Cocalico 5A 1-0
Cocalico dropped a notch in the ranking after falling behind Conrad Weiser 13-0 at the half before pulling out an unimpressive 21-13 win. Right, first game. But the schedule is unforgiving, demanding a quick turnaround with Cedar Cliff in this week before three consecutive road trips to Gov. Mifflin, Elizabethtown (nice Qb!) and Manheim Township. Then comes Manheim Central. So they’ll need real improvement this week against Cedar Cliff’s versatile attack after the lackluster performance against Weiser. Cocalico hasn’t shown any passing threat this year or last, which unless addressed, will allow the Colts to get aggressive and pin their ears.

10 Southern Columbia 2A (16-0) 1-0
I apologize for posting the wrong Top 20 last week that should have had Southern Columbia in at #11 in the Mid State. I imagine everyone knows their title history by now. If not, here’s the hardware breakdown; 1A Gold medals is 6, in 99, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06 (5 straight) with 7 1A Silver medals in 95, 96, 98, 99, 00, 01 and 11. Their 2A Gold Medals count is 2 in 15 and 17 with a 2A Silver medal wedged in between in 16….for a total of 8 Gold and 8 Silver medals.

Fast review: Last year’s team broke all the records averaging 51ppg while allowing 12, defeating Neumann Goretti 45-12 and Dunmore 56-7 before beating Wilmington 48-0 in the final. With a 14 year won loss of 177 and 22, maybe it’s time to move up for some stiffer comp. A glance at them says they could compete in the EPC-South, SOL, etc. The 2A status tends to diminish the overall high end talent that pours into the school. But once you see them! This year’s team returns 7 starters to both sides. The offense revolves around Qb Stone Hollenbach (6-3, 190, jr) who passed for 2531 yards, Rb Gaige Garcia (5-11, 190, jr) who rushed for 2306 yards and Wideout Julian Fleming (6-3, 185, jr) who had 1462 yards in receptions. GA, OSU, PSU, Mich, WV, et al have offered. Schools like Syacuse, Temple, Buffalo, W. Michigan and Bucknell have shown interest in Qb Hollenbach and who knows where Gaige Garcia will end up after gaining over 2000 as a soph. The OL returns 3, all seniors, Troy Donlan 6-0 260, Oak Six 6-3 280 and John Stabinski 5-11 230. The defense will key around linebackers Cal Haladay (6-1, 10, jr), Max Tillett (6-1, 190, sr) and Gaige Garcia with Cole Schankweiler (6-0, 265, jr) back at DT and Lear Quinton (6-2, 215, jr). Julian Fleming returns to the secondary. They dominated Bloomsburg last week 56-6 while holding them to minus 26 yards rushing while generating 491 yards themselves. They’re on the road Friday in the league opener against rival Mount Carmel (1-0) who better get a passing game that was nonexistent last week against Central Columbia to stay in this one.

Freedom 37 Becahi 20

Statement win for the Patriots tonight I’ve the state’s #3 team in 4A. Jared Jenkins looks like he’s made the leap, which is scary to think of since he threw for 2,600 yards as a sophomore. Jalen Stewart also had a big night running the football.

Freedom went up 21-0 early and led 28-7 at half. A pair of Tavion Banks TD runs cut the lead to 28-20, but Jenkins threw a 55 yard dart for a score to retake control. Stewart scored 3 TDs and Jenkins threw 2.

Patriots get Parkland next week, who blew out ACC 51-0.

Easton Red Rovers 2018

While my Lehigh Valley wide threads are more analytical in nature, I recognize that I often devote way more words to my alma mater than the other (often more important and interesting) things going on in the Valley. So, this year I’m devoting a thread to park my more fan-like thoughts on the home team. They’re certainly not SJP or Pine-Richland in terms of contending for a state title. But it’s a traditionally strong program that’s undergoing a bit of an identify crisis and turbulence in the changing landscape of high school football. And while Alabama football is certainly more dominant, Tennessee is more interesting to write and surmise about. Train wrecks are kind of fun. If nothing else, this thread could be fun in a “my favorite team is killing me” sort of way. Or, it's just an exercise in pure vanity (not out of the question).

With all of that out of the way, Easton should be…something this year? Ten years ago, if you told me that Easton would have a pair of 300 pound linemen, with everybody on the offensive line 250+, a three year starter at running back, four three year starters on defense plus their all conference middle linebacker all returning, I would be waxing poetic about being the favorites in the Lehigh Valley. But, I have no idea what to expect with the new regime. As I’ve bitched about here before, last year, Easton returned 19 starters, had the best passing game in school history, and finished one game better than the year before, lost to Nazareth at home, and got outscored by a good but not great Parkland team 94-17 in their two meetings. Maybe they just weren’t very good. But expectations should have been a lot higher than what ended up being accomplished.

That said, it’s year two. Certainly, Steve Shiffert took some time to find his footing (though after a gangbusters first season where he went to the PIAA semifinals and lost 6-3 to CB West), missing district playoffs in 1994, 1996, 1997, and 1998 before going to finals seven times in the next eight years and advancing to another pair of state Final Four’s. Running a high school football program is tough, Jeff Braido is a salt of the Earth guy, and he deserves a shot at the job. My bitching will be kept to a minimum (starting…now).

I’m optimistic because I think the offensive line is going to be really good. Albert Gayle and Patrick Shupp are both three year starters, and Shupp at 6’4 315 is a Division I caliber guy. Gayle (6’0 255) is probably the better high school football player, and I think will be a really good Division II defensive lineman (he’s a stealth all state candidate on the defensive side of the ball). The other bookend is Elek Ferency, back for his second year as a starter after playing as the swing lineman as a sophomore. Ferency is 6’3 305, a state finalist in the shot put, and could really pop as a late bloomer. They’re also getting back Christian Miers at guard, a 6’5 250 junior who transferred from Easton to Notre Dame but has returned to his home school. They’ve got size to spare. If there is the physicality to match it, they’ll be able to slug it out with good football teams up front, something they’ve been lacking since the 2014 team that ran the table in the regular season. A lot of teams in the Valley return skill players and quarterbacks, but Easton has the most returning in terms of numbers and talent in the trenches.

Other observations from camp

-Nate Nimeh is going to be the guy at quarterback. He’s bulked up a bunch (5’11 185 after being listed at 160 as a junior) and will need to match the efficiency of his predecessor. This year I will be really looking for the influence of QB coach Mike Palos (who was the Valley’s first ever 2,000 yard single season passer under Bob Stem at Becahi and played quarterback at Lafayette) who did a great job with Scott Poulson last season. A lot of the gripes under the prior regime was the lack of a quarterbacks coach, and it looks like that may be remedied and then some.

-Even with Nimeh winning the job, the big talk at quarterback is freshman Peyton Cosover. He’ll be the varsity back up, and while he’s not quite ready for prime-time, he’s the most polished QB prospect Easton has had in a very long time.

-Every chance he gets, Braido has been hyping up senior running back Harold Reynolds. After a really good sophomore year (786 yards, 10 TDs), Reynolds disappeared last year as Easton abandoned the inside run game. He’s a two-year captain and clearly well respected by everybody in and around the program. He also could be a clock controlling back running behind that huge offensive front.

-Braido also seems high on the replacements at receiver. Mike Dunlap and Damion Smith are replacing 94 catches, 1,700 yards, and 21 touchdowns from Jake Herres and Eddie Olsen, but are both big (6’4 185 and 6’3 190) receivers who have the athleticism (particularly Dunlap, who also ran a 4.5 at the Blue/Gray combine in Philly last month) to cause problems on the outside. I actually don’t expect as much drop off as anticipated, though I wonder if gameplans will shift and they won’t throw the ball.

-The other talk of camp has been Derek Frinzi. The 6’3 230 pound sophomore has really turned heads and is going to start at defensive end as a pass rusher and is going to be in the mix to start at guard. He might be the best college prospect on the roster. He hit a big growth spurt in the offseason (bulking up from 185 to 230 – puberty is a hell of a drug) and has the explosiveness and physicality to be an every down defensive lineman in high school.

-They’ve moved three year starter Danny Hynes from strong safety to outside linebacker, which is a reflection of how you have to defend modern offenses. Hynes is a hitter, but has the speed and fluidity to cover slot receivers and make plays sideline to sideline. It also moves Damion Smith from cornerback to strong safety, which is probably a better use of his size and skillset. It does mean that the two cornerback spots are open, with sophomore Nahjee Adams and seniors Makhi DeSilva and Xavier Apgar competing to get on the field.

-The other sleeper to be an impact guy is defensive tackle D’Sean Cham. The senior is huge (6’3 290) and if his conditioning level lets him be an every down 3-technique, the Rovers could have the best interior defense in the conference.

I’m planning to go see them scrimmage at Coatesville this weekend and will have more. I don’t anticipate them “beating” the Red Raiders, but I will like to see how the defense, which has the pieces to be pretty good, match up against one of the three best offenses in the state.

Dematha comes to Philly

Dematha and Imhotep face off this week. I really enjoy these early season big time games, I.e Wood/McDonough. I hope this type of scheduling is here to stay. Makes traveling to HS games fun for guys like me with no skin in the game.

On another note, Dematha coming off a blowout loss to a national power will be looking to get on the right track. Hate to pick against Pennsylvania but i have Imhotep losing by 3 scores. Dematha will be coached up and probably has better talent. Final Score, DC 37 Imhotep 18

Mid State Football Top 20 (11-20)..Aug 29, 2018

11 Williamsport 6A 1-0
Treyson Potts’s return to action after a year absence (ACL) came off as expected as he rushed for 154 yards on just 9 carries, scoring 5 Tds in a rout of undermanned Central Mountain. Senior Qb Joe Fagnano completed 10 of 12 passes for 252 with receiver Marcus Simmons accounting for 150 yards of those tosses. The return of Treyson Potts backed by a senior signal caller has elevated the Millionaires to another level. Last week saw them score on all 8 first half possessions while rolling to a 62-26 blowout. They’re at Altoona (0-1) this week where they should roll again seeing how the Lions couldn’t keep up with Hollidaysburg’s versatile but smaller attack losing 42-27.

12 Wilson 6A 0-1
Wilson ran into a buzz saw of a defense last week at Central Dauphin losing 23-7 in the season opener for both. Their new Qb Anthony Furtick looked good completing 18 of 28 for 180 yards. But the ground game was stuffed by the Ram front, holding them 111 yards. Major rival Governor Mifflin is up next in West Lawn coming off a 30-0 loss to another Mid Penn team in Cedar Cliff. Mifflin won last year’s encounter in a war, 21-14. Wilson is clearly farther along in their rebuild and should prevail but rivalries are rivalries and someone is going to be 0-2 after this one and in for a long season.

13 Manheim Township 6A 1-0
Township held on at Central Dauphin East winning 17-10 while breaking in junior Qb Harry Kirk and powerful sophomore Rb Jaden Floyd (5-11, 190) who played a key role rambling for 112 yards. East was game but not the same with Qb Kane Everson transferring and starting for Harrisburg High. Hard finding another school that loses as much talent to transfers in the Harrisburg area as CD East. So the Streaks are off to a good start they hope to continue against a good Dallastown team that lost narrowly last week to Hempfield 24-19. It’s their home opener and a tough spot for D-Town. Let’s see if Township can corral Nyzair Smith!

14 Cedar Cliff 5A 1-0
Cedar Cliff throttled Governor Mifflin in a stellar D performance they are not known for by holding the Mustangs to 59 yards rushing in a 30-0 win. Qb Chris Dare threw for 279 yards, completing 14 of 21 passes (67%) for 3 Tds while the Colts outdistanced GM 358 to 148 yards. Good luck finding similar outcomes in GM’s recent history. But then, they are dealing with a new head coach. Things ramp up this weekend with a rare trip to Denver (PA!) to play Cocalico at Eagle Stadium. Here they will likely run into a fired up squad after last week’s sub-par performance against Weiser and the news of Cedar Cliff’s easy win over Mifflin.

15 Central York 6A 1-0
The Panthers quick striking offense behind Qb Cade Pribula’s 12 of 19 completions for 338 yards (3Tds), overwhelmed their city rival by scoring from 79, 76 and 44 yards out for their first 3 scores in a 38-14 rout of West York. Wideout Saa’hir Cornelius had 198 yards in receptions. The problem this week is facing a Cumberland Valley team that was just embarrassed at home by Bishop McDevitt 48-21. CV isn’t the team they were last year that beat them 35-0 at CV but this is still a major step up for Central. McDevitt’s Qb Diehl had great success throwing for 284 yards last week and Pribula for Central can sling it. Could get interesting!

16 Hempfield 6A 1-0
You got to like a rebuilding Hempfield team that went on the road to beat a more veteran Dallastown team last week 24-19. But, the Lancaster Lebanon has always been a notch above the York-Adams, meaning the top tier of the YA match the LL’s midlevel more than their top teams. Qb Colin Peters led the Black Knights to a 17-7 half time lead finishing with 147 yards on a 9 of 17 outing. Their next non-conference game is new to their schedule and a major challenge in Manheim Central, fresh off a 44-0 destruction of Susquehanna Township.

17 Dallastown 6A 0-1
In a game marking the third encounter in two years between the two schools, D-Town again lost to Hempfield at home before a full house in Coach Ron Miller’s first game at the helm. Nyzair Smith’s 137 rush yards weren’t enough with a fumble returned for the score being the difference, losing 24-19. Next up is another LL challenge in Manheim Township, coming off their season opening win in Harrisburg against CD East 17-10.

18 Red Lion 6A 1-0New QB Zach Mentzer had a great first outing completing 12 of 18 tosses for 148 yards while running back Tyler Ness garnered 104 yards on 12 carries. Most of the damage was done early where the Lions built a 35-0 score at the half, finishing with a 35-12 rout of J.P. McCaskey. Red Lion returns a nice D core with star LB Elijah Workinger (6-5, 250) and DT and the entire secondary back. Workinger had 14 tackles last week. Waynesboro (Mid Penn-Colonial) is next coming off their 28-10 win against Red Land. Looks like another win for Red Lion who beat the Indians last year 35-7 and seem on track keying off the win against JPM.

19 York (William Penn) 5A 1-0
Looks like the Cats are back after a substantial rebuild of last year’s 9-2 season. Before that they went 17- 53 from 2010 to 2016 in the post Matt Ortega (Coatesville) years following his 5 years where they went 37-18. Reading isn’t exactly a world beater but anytime you open with a 63-16 win it gets people’s attention. First year starting Qb Branden Boutte threw for 198 yards while Dayjure Stewart rushed for 258 yards and 4 scores. All totaled, the Bearcats ran for 478 yards! J.P. McCaskey (0-1) known locally as Lancaster High is next.

20 Hollidaysburg 5A 1-0
The Golden Tigers make their entry into the Top 20 with the demise of a number of teams above them. But, they do have a veteran team with a dual threat quarterback in Brady Walters who makes things happen. Last week saw them renew the rivalry with Altoona, taking home a 42-27 win. The two rivals haven’t played since 2011 so it was spirited! The Lions couldn’t run (140 yds) but got 248 through the air with the Tigers pounding away for 278 rush yards, 135 by the Qb. They’re at Mifflin County (0-1) this week where they’ll cruise but then play Cedar Cliff, State College, Maryland power Fort Hill from Cumberland (lost 30-26 1A final to Dunbar) then McDowell consecutively
