Judge Kavanaugh

I know this is the sole reason many of you put up with a vile felon like Trump being in office, but doesn't it bother you to watch a Judge interviewing for a lifetime job and being so evasive on almost every question? Aren't these guys supposed to be model citizens?

And I'm not talking about the 30 years old, he came onto me at a high school keg party, accusation. Just seems a guy interviewing for the SCOTUS shouldn't answer so many questions with "I don't recall" or "I don't have an opinion on that". He's being hired for his opinion.

LaSalle Football

What the hell has happened to LaSalle FB and where the hell are all the LaSalle posters? How the times have changed! LaSalle FB faces a little bit of adversity and the LaSallians all run and hide. What happened to all the boastful and brash predictions? Where are all the mightier than thou LaSallian posters? Has football died in the halls of that fine institution in Wyndmoor, PA? I see all the money being spent on athletic fields and facilities on campus. Is this the year the Roman Catholic's and Father Judge's of the world finally get their "Program" win over LaSalle? The real head scratcher is a social media post from LSCHS today cancelling Saturday's planned Homecoming festivities including a team, family and alumni barbeque preceding the Haverford/LaSalle Football game on Saturday evening at Springfield. According to my weather app, Saturday is supposed to be partly sunny, 77 degrees with a 10% chance of precipitation. The hurricane I believe is hundreds of miles to the south. Or is there a proverbial hurricane churning up the waters in Wyndmoor and ripping through the school's administration and athletic department. C'mon LaSallians, what's the skinny???

#15 SJP 34 - #19 Good Counsel 27

Great win by the Prep against a tough team. McCord was outstanding...26-41 for 370 yards and 3 TDS. Marvin Harrison, Jr. had 11 catches for 110+ yards. Freeman had over 100 yards receiving, including a 67 TD reception and a crucial 2-point conversion catch with a minute to go in the game.

Admittedly, I was worried about losing CJ Duell, a dual threat QB who reminded me a lot of Chris Whitney. McCord’s performance eased any concerns. He has a chance to be the best QB in Hawks’ history if he can stay healthy. I was really impressed with his poise under pressure and his accuracy. You can easily see why he has so many DI offers.

The Good Counsel QB is a stud and gave the Prep fits throughout the game with his legs and arm. Lots of gutsy calls by the Good Counsel coach, who was playing to win. They converted several big 3rd and long and 4th and long plays.

Myles Talley (LB) and Zach Bougess (DB) had monster games. The Prep’s run game struggled a bit against a very good d-line, but Mason and Burrell made the big plays when needed and will be a handful for CL opponents.

The kicking game needs some work, but the Prep has a chance to put together another special season. Still a long way to go, but a well timed bye week to rest some banged up players is on tap next before the rivalry game with La Salle. Should be a good one.

Mid State Football Top 20 (1-10)….Sept 12, 2018

1 State College 6A 3-0
State High won easily again last week with their efficient attack generating 330 yards of offense to Hollidaysburg’s 303. And that’s where similarities ended. Speaking of efficiency, SC’s yardage producing 49 points, meaning they only had to go 6.73 yards to get a single point. The Golden Tigers had to go twice as far, 13.77 yards to get a point, 22 total, something like playing on a 200 yard field. State dominated every important phase of the game, leading 34-7 at the half in a game where the Tigers coughed up 3 fumbles (1 lost) and threw 4 picks. Qb Tommy Friberg should get more credit for his versatility, rushing for 76 yards and 2 scores while completing 10 of 16 passes for 154 yards. Keaton Ellis (PSU) caught 4 passes for 89 yards and 2 scores as Brady Dorner caught 5 for 68 yards. Cohen Russell and Isaiah Edwards were the primary backs with Edwards gaining 56 yards and scoring 2 touchdowns. 170 rush yards were distributed to 5 players with sophomore Dresyn Green getting in on the fun with an 85-yd kickoff return. Not a bad effort by Hollidaysburg who were embarrassed last year allowing 473 yards rushing. They’re home Friday to Carlisle’s undefeated Thundering Herd who will regret putting such a spotlight on themselves.
2 Bishop McDevitt 4A 3-0
What some of us felt could be a competitive game quickly feel apart when quarterback Chase Diehl connected for three 1st quarter touchdowns on the way to a 33-7 lead at the half. It just got worse from there with Diehl in the groove completing 15 of 22 passes for 458 yards and 6 touchdowns of 38, 9, 83, 32, 74 and 32 yards. Nazir Burnett had 9 catches for 228 yards and 4 Tds while T’nyis Becker had 5 receptions for 162 yards as the Crusaders totally dominated for an easy 49-14 win. The win allowed them to jump Manheim Central in the rankings. Like Southern Columbia below, it’s hard finding a loss on the schedule. In fact both should win out. At issue for McDevitt is they may not get a serious challenge during the regular season, leaving them at some risk in the postseason. Point being, the other District-3, 4A power Berks Catholic has already played Central Dauphin and McDonogh School with Malvern Prep in two weeks. Conference action starts Friday at Red Land (1-2).
3 Manheim Central 5A 3-0
How about Manheim Central fighting back from a 14-0 deficit at home (!) to turn away neighboring rival Warwick 27-20. They got off to a terrible start with Warwick returning the opening kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown. Compounding things, the Barons had 3 fumbles plus a touchdown called back to find themselves down 14-0 at the half. Thereon they outscored Warwick 27-6 via a pick turned into 6 and their relentless and balanced attack that saw Qb Evan Simon complete 12 of 21 passes for 178 yards while rushing for 56. Rb Tyler Flick had 136 yards and 2 scores. The sloppy home win dropped them a notch in the rankings to 3rd where they’ll need to be much more this week with #10 Wilson coming to town. Central will try to bulldoze right over Wilson’s smaller front, especially vulnerable now with LB Nick Johnson out for the year. Always fun seeing the Reading power teams take on Lancaster’s.
4 Harrisburg 6A 2-1
Harrisburg dismantled Cedar Cliff in pretty much the same manner McDevitt did Middletown by overwhelming them offensively (34-0 at half) primarily behind a hot quarterback in Kane Everson who ran for two scores and passed for two more in the first half alone. The Cougars owned the airways, totaling 352 yards. Everson completed 16 of 19 in a 46-14 rout of a decent Cedar Cliff team. Primary receivers Donte Kent, Rynell Gantt and Jahmir Plant each had 4 receptions for 112, 91 and 33 yards respectively. It’s hard overstating the roll of CD Eat transfer quarterback Everson who while passing for 352 yards also ran for 110. Harrisburg’s defense shouldn’t take too much of a back seat holding the Colts to 250 total yards. Wow, the Cougars are really coming on but can’t slack off with rival CD East up next. You know they won’t forget Qb Kane Everson transferring there a few months ago!
5 Manheim Township 6A 3-0
Township jumped from 11th to 5th in the ratings on the strength of their impressive comeback win at Central Dauphin last week. They overcame a 12-0, 2nd quarter deficit to win 22-12 in a defensive struggle of District-3 titans. Credit Township fighting back from the deficit with a 41-yd Td strike with 8 seconds left in the 1st half that gave them a significant lift. Kind of a gut shot to the Rams as well. Add to that a roughing the passer penalty at the start of the 2nd half that denied Central Dauphin possession on the Streaks 15 yard line that swung momentum even farther. Credit also a stiff D that shut CD down in the 2nd half holding them to 94 yards rushing. The Streaks have owned the Rams the last two years beating them twice last year. Next up is win #4 in the LL-1 opener against winless Penn Manor who has been outscored 115 to 20.
6 Central Dauphin 6A 2-1
It looked like the Rams found their passing attack with a 71 yard touchdown pass from QB Noah Hoffman to Nick Chimenti in the 1st quarter to take a 7-0 lead on Manheim Township last week. And a 2nd quarter safety and 40 yard field goal made the home crowd feel all was well with special teams and defense combining with a passing attack providing a 12-0 score. But two turnovers and Township’s rugged defense stopped them in the 2nd half despite Qb Noah Hoffman completing 10 of 20 passes for 155 yards and score. The schedule has been brutal playing Wilson, Berks Catholic and Township consecutively but hey, this is Central Dauphin football where scheduling is never an excuse. Better hadn’t be with a 0-3 pissed off Cumberland Valley coming in Friday night!
7 Berks Catholic 4A 2-1
Berks Catholic took on powerful McDonogh School to win their biggest game in school history in a tense 14-13 win. It was a defensive slugfest that ended in a scoreless half and 3rd quarter. That’s when BC put together a drive at the start of the 4th behind Abdul MacFoy’s (22/110/2 Tds) outside moves and the powerful inside presence of Brandon George (19/98), followed by another drive and score by MacFoy to take a 14-0 lead with 3:29 left in the game. McDonogh then came to life, erupting for 2 scores on 81 and 60 yard drives, then missed the 2-pt attempt with 57 ticks left on the clock. But it wasn’t over as they recovered an onside kick on BC’s 47 before being driven back under tremendous pressure and a strip sack where time finally expired. BC is at Boyertown (1-2) Friday where the Bears are in real trouble knowing they couldn’t keep up with Exeter or Pottsgrove.
8 Cocalico 5A 3-0
Cocalico survived a 93-yd kickoff return that tied the game (21 all) at the start of the 2nd half to go on and defeat stubborn Governor Mifflin 35-21 in Shillington. The Mustangs may be struggling at 0-3 but can be a tough nut to crack at home! A blowout win this week at Muhlenberg then Reading will set things right for them. For Cocalico, Noah Palm once again got to toss a few for 95 yards throwing 2 touchdown passes. That’s 11 on the year. But the Eagles like to pound it and did as much gaining 232 yards with Garrett Longenecker getting 102 yards. LL-2 actions begins this week at Elizabethtown (2-1) who was looking good before losing to Conrad Weiser 29-6 of the Berks-1. Cocalico will have to keep pressure on E-town’s big gun Cole Patrick (6-4, 190, sr) like Weiser did (7 of 21) to avoid a track meet.
9 Southern Columbia 2A 3-0
In another overwhelming display of offense, Southern Columbia blew out to a 48-0 halftime lead where the score mercifully ended with Coach Roth calling off the dogs against outmanned Selinsgrove. The Tigers rushed for 328 yards while holding the Seals to negative 14 yards rushing. Gaige Garcia got 126 yards on 7 attempts while his younger brother freshman Gavin got 96 yards on 2 carries. Shamokin (2-1. 3A) is next, a team Southern beat 55-7 last year. Good luck finding a loss on their schedule this year. SCA is a good example of a public school that should consider moving up in class. Their won-loss since 2004 is 177-22 (89%) by an average margin of 27 points, counting playoff games. Minimally, they could test the waters playing larger school in non-conference games instead of staying local. Bottom line, Catawissa is a tiny town, hardly more than a hamlet with just over 1500 for the 2010 census.
10 Wilson 6A 2-1
Up by 3 scores (21-0) at the half in a game they dominated on the stat sheet 160 yards to 56, the Bulldogs were forced to scramble in the 2nd half holding off an always competitive Spring Ford team who outscored them 22-12 in a 33-22 loss for the Rams. Wilson’s lead back Elijah Morales had 68 yards and a score while QB Anthony Futrick completed just 9 of 24 for 160 yards and 2 Td tosses. Of note, prized linebacker Nick Johnson (6-1, 230, sr) did not play and is lost for the season with a knee. They’re playing a lot of younger players this year where sophomore Troy Corson stood out returning a kickoff in the 4th quarter 80 yards for the touchdown. This week sees them at Manheim Central for a rare game with the Barons. Wilson is more a light weight/speed attack where Central is a masher that can also light up the airways with a veteran quarterback. After last week’s scare from Warwick, you can bet they’ll be focused this week.

Mid State Football Top 20 (11-20)….Sept 12, 2018

11 Central York 6A 3-0
Central York showed their moxie coming off the Cumberland Valley win by defeating a good Hempfield team at their place 35-31. They overcame the Knight’s Qb Colin Peters’ great effort (see bottom) by matching it with their own Qb Cade Pribula (DE recruit), who threw for 396 yards and 2 touchdowns while rushing for another 2 scores. Most impressive was the 73 yards drive with time expiring, then threading a 21 yard touchdown strike to Taylor Wright-Rawls with 6 seconds left to win the game. York Adams-Division 1 play starts this week with Red Lion (2-1) coming in off their 28-19 loss to Chambersburg.
12 York (William Penn) 5A 3-0
Cedar Crest had no answer for York’s big and fast attack as the Bearcats rolled over the Falcons in Lebanon. But it was a tight game into the 2nd quarter when Qb Logan Horn went down with an ankle injury with Cedar Crest ahead 14-7. Thereon the offense fell apart without his running and passing skills, producing only 60 yards after gaining 128 total yards before his injury. York took advantage, pounding down a tired offense with running back Dayjure Stewart getting 255 yards and 4 touchdowns on 28 carries. By the end of the game they rushed for 424 yards on the way to a 42-14 win. They’re home to New Oxford (1-2) who is overmatched although they can score points.
13 Middletown 3A 2-1
The Blue Raiders came up way short against Bishop McDevitt, particularly in the secondary where Qb Chase Diehl cut them to ribbons for 458 yards throwing 6 touchdowns. Raider Qb Scott Ash had a decent outing completing 10 of 19 pressured throws for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions. McDevitt’s defense was otherwise impenetrable, allowing a mere 74 yards rushing in a dominating 40-14 game. Double-A Camp Hill (0-3) is next in the Mid Penn Capital Division opener. Middletown won last year 49-0 and will name it again here.
14 Chambersburg 6A 3-0
Chambersburg joins the Top 20 after defeating Red Lion who was previously ranked 14th. An entertaining first half found the Trojans with a 21-19 lead before they completely shut down Red Lion to win on a late 4th quarter score, 28-19. Keyshawn Jones led all rusher with 180 yards and 2 scores on 12 carries for Chambersburg with quarterback Brady Stumbaugh connecting on 9 passes for 148 yards and touchdown toss. He also got the final score on a 1 yard keeper. Keyshawn Jones (5-8, 170, jr) is an illusive back and their primary receiver with 11 caches for 352 yards. The Trojan defense shined, holding Red Lion to 60 yards rushing and 170 passing. It ramps up Friday night going to Altoona (2-1) who is also revitalized after years of dormancy, having one winning season the last 10 years. The Lions schedule is a little tougher than Chambersburg’s and the Mansion has always been a graveyard for MP-Commonwealth teams, albeit, mostly in the postseason. And you know in Altoona’s first year back in the conference they’ll be pumped in their Mid Penn-Commonwealth opener.
15 Warwick 6A 2-1
Warwick jumped on rival Manheim Central right up front when Trey Glass (5-8, 170, jr) returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for the score. A series of Baron mistakes including a penalty nullifying touchdown and 2 fumbles set up a Warwick score off the second fumble when Nick Fucci ran it in from 27 yards out. He ended with 52 yards on 10 carries. But the 14-0 lead didn’t hold up with Central storming back to a 14-14 tie early in the 3rd. Two more scores iced it as the Barons prevailed 27-20. Of interest for Warwick, sophomore Qb Joey McCracken (6-2, 180) replaced senior Adam Ricketts (5-10, 175) in the 4th quarter and did well, completing 6 of 10 for 77 yards and a touchdown, while Ricketts was 8 of 20 for 92 yards with a pick. They’re home to Hempfield (1-2) Friday where they will need every bit of the intensity they brought to Manheim if they expect to win against what may be the best 1-2 team in the district.
16 Cumberland Valley 6A 0-3
Cumberland Valley fell to new lows dropping to 0-3 with the 35-19 blistering administered by Coatesville (700th win!) last week. They’re rebuilding and an easier schedule might have hidden weaknesses, but it is what it is. The schedule started with perennial powerhouse Bishop McDevitt (3-0), Central York (3-0), then last week’s special Coatesville team, who is also 3-0. The good news is it gets a lot easier the next two weeks playing at Central Dauphin then home to Harrisburg!? The loss to Coatesville was total, where they were out-yardaged 472 to 222. If there’s any good news and it’s shaky, they went on two long drives in the 2nd half that would have been great were they protecting a lead instead of coming back from a 28-0 deficit. Plessinger continued his solid performance completing 8 of 11 for 125 yards and a touchdown. This week sees them at Central Dauphin (2-1) who’s coming off a loss to Manheim Township.
17 Hollidaysburg 5A 2-1
They weren’t enough for State College losing 49-22 but they had enough to rush for 166 yards and pass for another 137 yards in a game where they were simply outmuscled and lost all the foot races! Qb Bobby Walters was solid for Hollidaysburg completing 10 of 13 passes for 140 yards with 2 Tds and 2 Picks. He rushed for 19 yards. They’ll score on most teams with him under center but defensively, they had no answer for SC. They’re home this week to another team that got it handed to them by a Mid Penn Commonwealth power in Cedar Cliff, who lost to Harrisburg 46-13. Congrats to both for scheduling inter-district games like this that involve considerable travel. Hollidaysburg is way out there, 55 miles southwest of State College off I-99 roughly 130 miles from Cedar Cliff in Camp Hill.
18 Altoona 6A 2-1
Altoona got their 2nd win in a row defeating Taylor Allderdice of the Pittsburgh City League 27-9. Both ran the ball well, a bad sign for the Lions but they prevailed with Mitchell Lawhead getting 102 yards on 18 carries and 3 Tds. Conner McCarthy passed for 160 yards completing 7 of 15 passes. Allderdice’s total yardage was 256; 172 were rushing. Of note, Altoona brought in an exciting sophomore quarterback in Marcus Day (6-4, 200) who galloped for 61 yards on 11 carries to give them a whole other dimension. It will be interesting to see how that shakes out. They host unbeaten Chambersburg (3-0) in a Mid Penn Commonwealth game Friday night at Mansion Park.
19 Red Lion 6A 2-1
If last week’s loss to Chambersburg where they got 230 total yards is any indication, they’re in big trouble this week at Central York in the York Adams League opener. Central beat a better Red Lion team last year 24-21 but because it’s the league opener, emotions will run high for a peak performance. It’s a competitive league with 5 different champions the last 5 years. York and Dallastown were co-champs at 6-1 last year with Red Lion and Central York tied for 2nd at 5-2. The last 5 years has seen D-town with 3 crowns and 1 runner up, Red Lion with 1 title and 3 runner ups, Central York with 1 championship and 3 runner ups.
20 Central Dauphin East 6A 1-2
CD East traveled to White Plains, NY last week to play their Catholic state champion Archbishop Stepinac but fell short, losing 32-14. They hung tough but where simply outmanned, getting sacked 8 times and held to -14 yards rushing. Stepinac got 359 total yards, 227 on the ground. Still, it’s nice seeing MP-Commonwealth teams upgrading the schedule to play high quality competition with East High traveling to White Plains, Harrisburg scheduling Coatesville, Cumberland Valley scheduling Coatesville and Bishop McDevitt (Mid Penn-Keystone), Central Dauphin playing Berks Catholic, Wilson and Manheim Township and State College traveling to St. Augustine Prep in New Jersey. They’re at surging Harrisburg Saturday who beat them last year 45-7.

Others:
Williamsport 6A 1-2

Running back Treyson Potts is back but evidently so is Berwick (3-0, D2) after beating them 41-17 and holding him to 30 yards. At Hazelton Friday.
Cedar Cliff 5A 1-2
Lost last 2 to Cocalico and Harrisburg but the tough slate continues at Hollidaysburg Friday, then McDevitt the following week!
Conrad Weiser 4A 2-1

Dallastown 6A 1-2
Flipped it last week destroying Penn Manor 42-7 after the 0-2 start. Should waltz this week at 0-3 South Western to open York-Adams action.
Mount Carmel 2A 2-1
At Jersey Shore Friday then home to a powerful North Schuylkill from D-11.
Palmyra 5A 3-0
Vet team out of the MP-Capital (Middletown, Milton Hershey, Steel High) lots of skill, vet Qb, O-line at 227 average, home to East Pennsboro.
