Emmaus offense does it again, not punting in the second half and erasing a 21-14 halftime deficit. Ethan Parvel was masterful, as were Lubens Myers and Brandon Carmine (filling in for the injured Sone Ntoh).

Emmaus won the game by forcing 5 turnovers, including two fumbles on popped up kick offs that led directly to short field touchdowns. And the defense did enough, getting burned by Easton’s big plays (Dunlap had two long catches, including a 64 yard TD, Damion Smith caught a 35 yard TD, and Nahjee Adams took a screen 50 yards) but forced turnovers, including a pick in the end zone and causing Dunlap to fumble after a 25 yard catch and run.

Once again, Easton was done in by turnovers, another 100+ yards in penalties, and poor tackling, particularly in the run game. They’re still missing big pieces to injury, but once again they made huge mistake after huge mistake in a big game. For a program built on fundamentals and discipline, it’s not there. And again, they weren’t ready for prime time.

Father Judge falls to the Inter-AC 2 games in a row at Ramp. This time GA defeats the 'Saders 31-21. I think they have failed to teach or forgot how to tackle at Solly and Rowland Aves. The Judge offense rolls through Dooley and Joseph exclusively. The defense needs to do tackling drills all next week. Next up for Judge (1-2) is the always tough Salesianum on the road. Speaking of Ramp, something has to give. The set up is horrible. Everyone is confined to one side of the field and way behind the sideline behind the visiting team. There is very limited seating with only a few sets of mini bleachers only 4-5 rows high. You can't see anything standing/sitting behind the visitors bench. They have constructed a two story structure (decked out in FJ blue siding btw) on the visiting side at the 50 yard line that serves as a press box. This structure completely obstructs your view on either side of the 50 yard line. I appreciate the effort and sentiment to want to play at home across the street from the school but it feels like a glorified JV game experience sad to say! I much rather watch games at NEHS until they get Ramp figured out. Personally, I feel they rushed Ramp as a money grab as opposed to paying the rental fee at NEHS. What's going to happen in a few weeks when Judge hosts LaSalle and all their faithful including their pep band. It should be interesting! Go 'Saders!!!!!!!!!!

Districts 3, 4, 5, 6

1 State College 6A 4-0
State College crushed Carlisle 56-17 to open conference action with Qb Tommy Friberg completing 12 of 18 passes for 305 yards and 5 touchdowns. Wide out Keaton Ellis was Mr. Everything catching 5 passes for 194 yards, getting a pick, recovering a fumble and returning a blocked field goal for 6. SC is rolling now, averaging 40ppg while allowing just 15. Undefeated Chambersburg is next coming in hot off a road win at Altoona.
2 Bishop McDevitt 4A 4-0
McDevitt had another blowout win defeating Red Land 49-2 to open MP-Keystone action. Qb Chase Diehl was 6 of 9 in the first half for 162 yards where they scored all their points in a 49-0 rout. Special talent T’nyse Becker rushed for 96 yards and caught 2 passes for another 90 yards. Keystone rival Cedar Cliff (2-2) is next coming in off a road win at Hollidaysburg. And if the Colts don’t get them, no one will in the regular season.
3 Manheim Central 5A 4-0
Central again survived an early deficit, falling behind 10-0 to Wilson, before coming back 10-6 at the close of the 1st half. Thereon it was a titanic struggle between two of the area’s premier programs with Central getting 189 total yards of offense to Wilson’s 188. 14 4th quarter points sealed it for the Barons with Qb Evan Simon held to 58 yards on a 3 of 16 outing while Tyler Flick was held to 78 yards rushing. But it was enough to win 20-10. They’re home this week to Elizabethtown (2-2) who has lost their last 2 games to Conrad Weiser (3-1) 29-6 and Cocalico (4-0) 41-14.
4 Harrisburg 6A 4-1
QB Kane Everson proved unstoppable, completing 10 of 13 passes for 240 yards while throwing 5 Tds as the Cougars destroyed Central Dauphin East 42-0. That was also the halftime score before coach let in the subs. Harrisburg dominated all phases, holding East to 22 yards rushing and 167 passing. Since losing to Coatesville in the opener, they’ve outscored opponents 162-29. Mid Penn-Commonwealth action continues Friday at winless Cumberland Valley, maybe a little beat up after facing Coatesville and Central Dauphin back to back, losing to the Raiders 35-19 and CD 37-7.
5 Manheim Township 6A 4-0
The Blue Streaks kept it going defeating winless Penn Manor 41-0 at Millersville University Stadium to open conference action in the Lancaster-Lebanon-Section One. After a sluggish 1st half where the Streaks lead 21-0, they blew it open when Brett Benjamin returned the 2nd half kickoff 95 yards for the score. Township has a quarterback this year (again!) with Harrison Kirk completing 13 of 18 for 214 yards and 3 TDs, while the defense held Penn Manor to 18 yards rushing. Like last week’s Manheim Central-Wilson game, Township’s game at home against Cocalico this week is a mandated cross-over game. Great seeing top guns from the LL-1 playing those from the LL-2.
6 Central Dauphin 6A 4-1
Central Dauphin crushed Cumberland Valley 37-7 in a game that wasn’t that close. The Rams had it going on both sides of the ball with QB Noah Hoffman throwing for 192 yards (10 of 15) while FB/LB Adam Burkhart rushed for 116 yards, giving them 352 total yards. The D was simply formidable, holding CV to 57 yards rushing. If they can keep the passing game going look out! They’re at upstart Carlisle (3-1) Friday who is coming off a 56-17 loss at State College. They can’t ease up on The Herd, sandwiched between CV and Harrisburg.
7 Berks Catholic 4A 3-1
Berks Catholic had no trouble with Boyertown disposing of the Bears 64-6 while totaling 402 total yards. They dominated all phases, particularly special teams with a 65 yard punt return for 6, a 90 yard kickoff return for the score and a blocked punt recovered in the end zone. They also rushed for 260 yards while holding Boyertown (1-3) to 236 total yards. Once again this week sees them on the road playing undefeated Malvern Prep (3-0) who defeated McDonogh-MD last week 19-3, the same McDonogh team BC beat the week before 14-13.
8 Cocalico 5A 4-0
Cocalico won as expected at Elizabethtown 41-14, maybe by a little more than expected jumping out to a 27-0 half time lead. FB/LB Garrett Longenecker had a 108 yards rushing while the defense held E-town largely in check, sacking Qb Cole Patrick 4 times. Next up is an LL crossover game with Manheim Township from Section 1. Cocalico is Section 2. What a game matching the undefeated Eagles against the streaking Streaks. You can’t just line up and batter Township, you have to pass, so it will be interesting as the ground pounding Eagles take to the air, or else.
9 Southern Columbia 2A 4-0
The Tigers registered their 2nd straight shutout defeating Shamokin 48-0. On the year, they’ve outscored opponents 193-13! Total yardage figures were again embarrassing (for SCA!) piling up a 420 (248 rushing) to 32 advantage. PSU coach James Franklin was in attendance checking out his prized recruit Julian Fleming, rated as the top receiver in the country. They’re at Central Columbia (3-1) Friday who has a veteran cast back. Like SCA, they’re blowing people away, except Mount Carmel in the opener who prevailed 21-13, the same MCA team who lost to Southern 41-7.
10 Wilson 6A 2-2
The Bulldogs jumped on Manheim Central hard and early taking a 10-0 lead deep into the 2nd quarter until the Barons found the scoreboard and momentum for a 10-6 Wilson lead. They held Central until the 4th quarter when their balanced attack scored twice for the final score of 20-10. The stats were even with Central at 189 yards to the Bulldogs 188. This was an old fashioned slugfest won by the more veteran team playing at home. Workhorse back Elijah Morales was held to 68 yards rushing while Qb Anthony Futrick completed just 13 of 30 passes for 97 yards and a pick. Punchless Penn Manor (0-4) whose been outscored 156-20 is next.
11 York (William Penn) 5A 4-0
York got another blowout win thrashing New Oxford (1-3) in York-Adams action 71-14. Running back Dayjure Stewart (6-0, 200, sr) had 7 scores and over 300 yards rushing against the outmuscled Patriots who were run over by the Bearcats much larger (slow) line. To date they’ve outscored teams 231 to 44. And that’s how it will stay until they get into the meat of the schedule against Dallastown (2-2), Red Lion (3-1) and Central York (3-1). D-town is up and down with the other two in rebuild mode. Ditto York but Coach Russ Stoner in year 2 has them on the same page, something that hasn’t been done since the Matt Ortega years, before he left for Coatesville after the 2008 season. They’ll name it again this week at outgunned Spring Grove (1-3).
12 Middletown 3A 3-1
Talk about rebounding from a bad loss. Middletown’s answer to their 40-14 thumping by McDevitt was to return the favor against Camp Hill with a runaway 63-0 romp over the Lions where they generated 444 total yards of offense. Blue Raider backs ran at will with Odell Green getting 118, Tymir Jackson running for 116 and Richie Sykes rushing for 95 yards and 3 scores. Camp Hill was held to 86 yards of offense! Next up is a trip a few blocks down the road to Steelton to play their Rollers (3-1, AA) whose loss came to powerful Delone Catholic (4-0), 54-19.
13 Chambersburg 6A 4-0
Chambersburg is turning the corner after going 4-37 the last 4 years by getting their 2nd road win to remain undefeated with the 48-28 win at Altoona. Welcome to the Mid Penn Commonwealth Altoona! Rb Keyshawn Jones is the division leader with his 248 rush yards and 3 scores while Qb Brady Stumbaugh rushed for 110 yards giving the Trojans 440 yards of total O. The D lags behind allowing 86 points but 4-0 is 4 and 0. Like Carlisle last week, who also came in undefeated, their record will get State College’s full attention. SC won last year’s game 70-20.
14 Warwick 6A 3-1
Warwick got right back on track after the disappointing 27-20 loss at Manheim Central to flatten Hempfield 27-0. Qb Adam Ricketts was on fire with 344 yards passing mostly to Trey Glass who caught 11 for 160 yards and returned a punt 96 yards for 6. He returned the kickoff against Manheim Central 94 yards two weeks ago. Hilton Michael snagged 8 for 120 yards. They’re home Friday against McCaskey who is 1-3.
15 Red Lion 6A 3-1
Red Lions had their top performance in years running the RPO to perfection, scoring on every drive while piling up 482 total yards in a 56-28 win at Central York. Qb Zach Mentzer rushed for 144 yards (2 Tds) and completed 10 of 14 passes for 126 yards (2Tds), while Tyler Ness and Nic Schultz rushed for 132 and 86 yards respectively. That’s a important conference win for RL over a principle challenger. They’re home to winless South Western Friday.
16 Central York 6A 3-1
Let’s see how they respond from the shellacking given them by Red Lion last week in a 56-28 conference loss. Who saw that coming? They moved the ball well, grinding out 450 total offense with their Delaware commit Cade Pribula completing 21 of 31 passes for 314 yards and 3 touchdowns. Taylor Wright-Rawls caught 7 passes for 138 yards and 2 scores. But as mentioned in the preseason, they don’t typically play a lot of defense in the York-Adams, at least not last week allowing RL 482 yards of offense. But they’ll recover Friday at New Oxford (1-3) although the Pats can score points.
17 Cedar Cliff 5A 2-2
The Colts showed their class on the road winning at Hollidaysburg 41-31 following consecutive games against Cocalico ranked 8th and Harrisburg, the 4th rated team. Qb Chris Dare lite things up, completing 21 of 25 for 298 yards and 4 scores, with Jaheim Morris rushing for 168 yards on 20 carries. #2 QB Bobby Whalen caught 12 passes for 148 yards and 3Tds. They’ll have to get it together again this week in their 4th straight road game taking on powerful Bishop McDevitt (4-0) who is crushing teams by an average score of 46-18. McDevitt won last year in a war 28-21.
18 Dallastown 6A 2-2
Nyzair Smith rushed for 182 yards and 2 scores on 16 carries to lead Dtown to a solid 35-7 win at South Western. The win got them to .500 and 1-0 in conference play. Northeastern is up next at 2-2 and also on a 2 game winning streak against a softer schedule. But they do have a narrow 10-6 loss to improved Carlisle meaning it could be entertaining. Neither is playing defense so it should be an entertaining and high scoring affair.
19 Solanco 5A 4-0
The Mules kept their smooth running triple option in high gear against Garden Spot in LL-2 action rolling out a 48-21 road win. Qb Joel McGuire (735 rush yards on year) rushed for 242 yards on 6 carries (6!) with Nafis Moore getting 142 yards on 5 carries. Averaging 44pgp while allowing 17, they have yet to be challenged. That challenge could come this week against Conestoga Valley (3-1) who won last year’s game 55-54 in overtime. Solanco (South Lancaster County) looks like a serious challenger to Manheim Central and Cocalico for LL-2 honors.
20 Hollidaysburg 5A 2-2
Hollidaysburg fell short coming off State College to play another Mid Penn team, Cedar Cliff, where they fought the good fight but came up short losing 41-31. They were definitely in it, cranking out 427 total O with Qb Bobby Walters completing 20 of 38 passes for 266 yards and 4 Tds. The Colts won this one by containing Walters running abilities, holding him to 48 yards on 17 carries. He came into the game averaging 85ypg. Next up is Maryland power Ft. Hill (2-0), last year’s 1A runner up.

Districts 3, 4, 5, 6

21 Exeter Township 5A 2-2
Tough team and a tough loss last week to Spring Ford 33-27 in ot pounding out 210 rushing with Jeremiah Nixon gaining 178. Besides Spring Ford, Exeter’s other loss was the opener to Berks Catholic. The two other opponents were crushed by a combined score of 91-37. Section-1 play starts in the Berks Inter County Friday at home vs 0-4 Muhlenberg before the showdown at Conrad Weiser.
22 Conrad Weiser 4A 3-1
The Scouts suffered a 21-13 opening day loss to Cocalico before winning the next three beating Fleetwood, Elizabethtown and Boone by an average score of 34-11. They have a lot of senior leadership and a veteran quarterback in Alex MacKenzie (6-2, 205, sr). This group looks like they will improve on the last two editions that made it to the Eastern Conference playoffs. They’re at Reading Memorial Stadium Saturday for their 50th Anniversary of football against surprising 3-1 Twin Valley with 3 year starting Qb Zach Gardner.
23 Mount Carmel 2A 3-1
Nice wins vs Central Columbia (3-1) 21-14 and Lewisburg (3-1) 40-20 with loss to Southern Columbia 41-7. Looks like they have another difficult game this week at home against undefeated North Schuylkill (4-0, 3A, D-11) of the Schuylkill FB League. The Spartans edged MCA last year 21-20.
24 Cumberland Valley 6A 0-4
CV winless? A heavy dose of graduations with a front loaded schedule of quality including McDevitt (4-0) 48-21, Coatesville (4-0) 35-19, Central York (3-1) 31-14 and Central Dauphin (3-1) last week where they were manhandled 37-7 will do that! That’s a tough slate and with Harrisburg coming in Friday it’s looking bleak.
25 Carlisle 6A 3-1
Carlisle hasn’t had a winning season since 2005 so you’ll take a 3-1 record with the 56-17 loss at State College last week. Getting above .500 is still a bear now that they’re into divisional play. Central Dauphin is next in Carlisle.
26 Altoona 6A 2-2
Like Carlisle, the won/loss is looking pretty good with one winning season over the last 10 years despite the rude welcome to the Mid Penn Commonwealth last week at home by Chambersburg losing 48-28. They’re at CD East Friday where they could steal one playing mistake free ball.
27 Williamsport 6A 2-2
They should put these guys in the York-Adams, all O and no D as the Millionaires got a 64-63 win in Hazelton to even their record. Williamsport got 596 total yards to Hazelton’s 574 with Treyson Potts rushing for 248 yards and 4 Tds while Hazelton’s Damon Horton had 284 with 7 Tds. Nice backs! They should win their next 3 beginning with Crestwood Friday. Being in District-2 Hazelton is not in the rankings but have a dangerous team at 1-3 with two 1-pt losses, Williamsport and Wyoming Valley West 21-20, both in Hazelton. 28 Governor Mifflin 5A 1-3
The Mustangs are rebuilding under a new coach but got their first win last week against Muhlenberg 41-14 after a tough loss to Cocalico the week before and a 42-28 loss at Wilson the week before that. They held the Muhlies to 46 yards rushing, 120 total and should win going away this Friday at 0-4 Reading.
29 Cedar Crest 6A 3-1
Qb Brody Dunlap subbing for the injured Logan Horn (inj’d vs York) had 169 rushing yards and completed 9 of 16 passes for 118 yards as the Falcons defeated McCaskey 35-21 in their Lancaster Lebanon Section-1 opener. After bouncing back and forth from the LL-2 to the LL-1, Cedar Crest under Coach Rob Wildasin has shown steady improvement each year, going 3-7, 5-6, 6-4 and 8-3 last year. They’re back in the LL-1 seeing a few unfamiliar faces including Hempfield (1-3) on the road Friday.
30 Hempfield 6A 1-3
We’ll find out if there’s any life left after the 27-0 shutout at Warwick, but it doesn’t get any easier with Cedar Crest (3-1) in Friday. Only Manheim Central and Warwick handled the Black Knights so it’s no walk in the park for visiting Cedar Crest.
31 Central Columbia 3A 3-1
The Blue Jays are loaded with a veteran team off a 9-3 season. And they lost the opener to Mount Carmel 21-13 before reeling off 3 straight wins by a cumulative score of 111-31. They’re home Friday to archrival Southern Columbia, looking like the only thing standing between SCA and an undefeated season. Southern will have to help them while the Blue Jays play error free ball and get a few breaks.
32 Central Dauphin East 6A 1-3
Tough coming off road losses at Archbishop Stepinec 32-14 in White Plains and Harrisburg 42-0 but at least they’re home to the hungry Mountain Lions of Altoona in what should be a high scoring, competitive game.
33 Palmyra 5A 4-0
Cumberland Valley could have used this schedule but they’re winning the games they’re supposed to with few road blocks ahead excepting Steelton (3-1), Milton Hershey (4-0) and Middletown (3-1). They have a 5-5, 130 pound running back, Caleb Hawkins who flies, averaging 126ypg! The line features Kris Day 6-3, 235 (Captain), Matt Weaver 6-0, 250, Braden Baker 6-3 265, Nick Henry 5-10, 275 et al. They’re at winless Camp Hill Friday for win #5.
34 West Perry 4A 4-0
The OL/DL is back this year plus Qb Kenyon Johnson (850 rush ly) dazzling them in the Veer. They haven’t had a challenge yet in the wide open Mid Penn-Colonial where they’re outscoring opponents 201 to 42. A home game verses Mechanicsburg (0-4) should continue the trend before the test at Northern (3-1) where the Polar Bears will be lying in wait.
35 Wyomissing 3A 3-1
Here’s another Reading program with deep tradition and a strong history of success. The difference between them, Wilson, Governor Mifflin, Berks Catholic and Exeter is they’ve won a state title, back in 2012 with a 16-0 team that beat Aliquippa 17-14. The 2014 team lost in the semifinals. Since 2012 they’ve gone 65-15. Their loss this year was at Pottsville (3-1) 21-7 where they held the Crimson Tide to 87 yards on the ground but allowed 3 scores above. They’re at struggling West York (0-4) Friday where they’ll get win #4.
36 Lewisburg 3A 3-1
Here’s a veteran team that collapsed against Mount Carmel 40-20 before rebounding verses Milton 49-7 last week. They’re at Shamokin (2-2) who is likely still licking their wounds following the 48-0 loss at Southern Columbia then a tough one at Bloomsburg.
37 Lancaster Catholic 4A 4-0
Todd Mealy is back (56-35 Penn Manor 07-14 in LL-1) as a head coach in the LL after a year of residency requirement (Doctoral program PSU) in 2014 then D/C at LC the last two years. He’ll likely return them to the glory years of 2009 (15-1) and 2011 (16-0) when they won 2A state titles. This year they’re already winning by an average score of 40-7. That should continue Friday vs Lebanon where the 1-3 Cedars are struggling.
38 Northern 5A 3-1
Oddly enough this was a good test for Northern last week beating winless 6A Mifflin County 20-13 who has a diverse and difficult schedule and pounds you with more size than Northern typically sees. Interesting to see how MC fairs against 4-0 Ship next week while Northern travels to Greencastle taking on the 2-2 Blue Devils Friday.
39 Conestoga Valley 5A 3-1
Qb Bradley Stoltzfus completed 11 of 17 passes for 212 yards with Keegan Martin rushing for 104 yards on 25 carries as the Buckskins beat Lampeter Strasburg 20-7 to win their first Lampeter Bowl Trophy in 7 years. But they better bring again this week at home against Solanco whose averaging 44ppg!
40 Milton Hershey 4A 4-0
Looking good getting road wins in Annville 39-13 and Harrisburg against Susquehanna Township 14-8, plus easy home wins against Hershey and the Boiling Springs Bubblers! That’s a good start in the MP-Capital after a .500 season last year. They should keep that going this week at home against East Pennsboro (0-4) who except for losses by 6, 6 and 7 points, is 3-1, so they can’t let down. Pennsboro suffered big, big grad losses, but they’ve always been tough kids from blue collar Enola, coming from the Enola Yard, once the world’s largest freight yard. They’ll punch you in the nose!

“I don’t think there’s a specific area that our team can improve on. I think we can keep improving everywhere week to week because there’s always room for improvement.”

“I think the keys to our team being successful going forward is to remain on the same page with each other. We have to continue to push each other in practice and keep the same goals.”

“The season has gone well for us. We’ve had some highs and lows, but we’ve been able to overcome the lows and find ways to start off the season against some very tough teams.”

“Our opponent is Woodland Hills. Playing against them has always been a big game and I expect nothing less going to their place that week.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“I feel like the key for us going forward in the season is limiting mental mistakes. We’ve had a lot of penalties through two weeks and they’ve cost us in crucial situations in the game. We’ve shown that we can be a very good team, but I think fixing this will put us in a good direction to achieving the goals we set at the beginning of the season.”

“For our team to be successful, I think it’s still limiting mental mistakes and capitalizing on opportunities in the game. If we can improve on these, we can be a very scary team.”

I'd like to think I'm not alone in this crowd in wanting to visit various schools and stadiums to take in the atmosphere. Last Friday, I made the 2+ hour drive to Catawissa to witness Southern Columbia football. As a fan of the game at this level this is a place I've wanted to visit for years.It seemed as though their most-tightly contested games were always scheduled closer to the end of the season and I never wanted to go there to freeze my ass off. I chose this past week's game against Selinsgrove because they appeared to be the toughest opponent on their schedule. They might have been, but it wasn't even a contest. This Tigers team is loaded, and I left there more impressed with the way they played defense. It was 48-0 at halftime, but it was still worth the trip to me. Is there anywhere you guys want to go? I'm curious as to what people want to see and I'm looking for new destinations.
