Lehigh Valley Commits

The two best offensive linemen in the EPC are off the board.

Little late on this first one, but Parkland’s Nicholas Dawkins (son of the sixers legend Darryl Dawkins) committed to Penn State. Dawkins is a three star recruit, but with tons of helium after showing his athleticism on the camp circuit this summer. He’s 6’4 300 and projects to play guard at Penn state.

Easton’s Patrick Shupp committed to Delaware. Shupp is massive (6’3 330) and has started at left tackle since his freshman season. He also plays attack on the lacrosse team and his highlights are fairly amazing for a kid his size. I could see them slimming him down at Delaware to unlock even more of his athleticism.

They’re the first two Division I guys off the board up here. Becahi has the biggest group of recruits still out there with Tavion Banks, Jerry Lyons, George French, Matt Stianche all likely FBS/FCS guys. Freedom’s trio of Jared Jenkins, Kaden Moore, and Jalen Stewart, Nazareth’s Anthony Harris, Parkland’s Ja-Lon Perkins, Northampton’s Tyrese Brandon, and Liberty’s Kendrick Wesley are the cream of the prospect crop.

Q&A with Malvern Prep offensive center Coltin Deery

How did the high school football season go overall?
“While our record was not the best, I think we grew a lot as a team. When you lose 5 FBS and 5 FCS seniors, you are going to have some growing pains.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I went right into the wrestling room the Monday after our last game and am looking forward to wrestling season with my other group of brothers. I will continue lifting and getting ready for combines and camps later this spring and summer.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I want to continue to work on my speed, explosiveness, and strength this off season. That will help a lot down in the trenches where I play.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We have a really good group of sophomores and freshmen coming up that I am excited to play with. We have a lot of speed at the skill positions and some bigger young guys coming up.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“Our non-conference schedule is really tough, and Coach G always pushes us early in the season by playing high caliber competition. I expect Archbishop Spalding and Imhotep to be early tests for us again next year, but I would not want it any other way.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I have been really lucky to have had great coaching in both football and wrestling and have had success in both so far in high school. I will know when I find the best fit either football or wrestling, but if the right opportunity arose, I would like to do both in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have spoken to TCU, Penn State, Rutgers, Northwestern. Lehigh, Bucknell, Brown, Buffalo, and Bowling Green this year so I am really excited.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I would say TCU. I went there for a camp, but I still have a lot of work to do. TCU Coach Chad Glasgow gave me some things to work on and I have been working hard on those things.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I visited TCU and Rutgers before the season and plan on taking several unofficial visits this spring and summer.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Yes, with many of the schools listed above. I will go to the junior days and see where it goes from there.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Yeah, I was always a Penn State kid growing up. I got invited to visit PSU last week and got to see the game against Rutgers. Football games are unreal experience at PSU.”

Q&A with Upper St Clair quarterback Ethan Dahlem

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season went very well this year. We came up short of our goal, but overall, we exceeded expectations.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“My plan now is to help the basketball team make a run this year and start the off-season for football.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“Hopefully for next year, I will have improved my strength and speed. I need to get bigger while keeping my speed or getting faster at the same time.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I think we will have a good team next year. We have a lot coming back, which will help us. We have to fill some voids, but we will be fine.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“5A is tough in general, so I think every team we play will be a battle. Since Pine and SF are in it now, it’s going to be even stronger than it was before. We can’t come into any game thinking we are going to blow by the other team.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I would like to play sports in college for sure. It’s going to be tough since I’m on the smaller end of the scale, but I’m leaning toward playing football rather than basketball. Time will tell.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“As of right now, I don’t have any schools recruiting me. I’ve reached out to some Ivy League and D3 colleges though.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not made any college trips yet.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I do plan on going to some that I would like to attend for college.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite colleges growing up were Pitt and Duke for sure.”

Q&A with Pine-Richland wide receiver Eli Jochem

How did the high school football season go overall?
“I think the season went well for me. I improved a lot from last year and did much better, but our team fell short of our goal of winning a WPIAL championship and even a state championship.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Now I’m planning on working out with the team and also doing extra workouts this offseason. Also, I might try out track to get faster.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“I have a lot to improve on as a player. I need to get faster and much stronger, especially my upper body. I also need to get better at route running and need to become shiftier.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I have no doubt that my team can win a state championship next year and go undefeated.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“I think our toughest opponents will be Peters Township, Gateway, Penn Trafford, and Penn Hills. We are also looking to play another national team week zero.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I began talking to coaches from the Patriot League schools, a few Colonial schools, and a couple Ivy League schools have contacted me too. They are all starting to make rounds at our school again.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have not made any college trips yet with our busy schedule for football.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I don’t have any currently planned, but I expect to have some in the spring soon.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I always liked Indiana University growing up because my mom went there, but I also like Penn State University because my siblings go there.”

Q&A with Notre Dame Green Pond running back Matt Frauen

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Not bad. As my first season transferring from NJ, I loved the competitive atmosphere. I wasn’t able to play in the postseason due to the transfer rule, but other than that I had a decent season.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“My plans now are to get right back into workouts and focus on getting better.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“As a player, I’d like to improve all around because to me, there’s room for improvement on every aspect of my game.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I am always confident in my teammates. I’ve played on many teams and have never had a tighter bond then I do with these guys.”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule next season?
“All around, we will have tough competition. Our first few games are teams we lost to last year and we also moved into a new league with tougher league teams.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I want to play college football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“So far, I have not received interest.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Over the summer, I was invited to a camp at Fordham and have plans on visiting UPenn and others this off-season.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up, my favorite college was always Penn State.”

Q&A with West Catholic safety Shakur Smalls

“This year was a little rough with having new coaches and late spring practices, we had to overcome adversity from the very beginning. But in the end, we did good. West Catholic will be a powerhouse in the next few years.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I plan to push myself way more. I will be playing at the division 1 level, so I need to train like it.”

What are you trying to improve on the most as a player?
“As of right now, I want to understand the game more. College is faster, so I want my IQ to slow it down so I can read and react.”

“I plan to continue to play football in college. Football has always been an outlet for me, so I will continue to play until my day comes to stop.”

SJP

Some post-game thoughts:

SJP's defense tonight was remarkable--obviously very well-prepared and awfully quick--and extra impressive given that Jeremiah Trotter and Rightley didn't play and Leneghan was limited by an injury. Too bad there's not another Johnson in the works.

Burrell looked like Swift on that second touchdown. The three seniors on the O-Line will be hard to replace.

Looked like the smallest SJP crowd of all the Hershey appearances. Lots of reasons--most the same as why attendance is generally down for high school games--but one is certainly the fact that the locations of the previous Prep games don't make it easy for Prep people to get in the habit of going to games, especially ones that are not likely to be mercy-rule games. They should start by giving up on the Widener experiment. Four years and it's pretty obvious it hasn't worked. How about the South Philly supersite? I know other schools use it, but surely there's a way for the Prep to play, say, one or two of their early games against high-profile opponents and their two or three home league games there--or somewhere else much easier to get to by Prep students and families.

Looks like there's a good chance three of the other PCL Red teams (LaSalle, Wood, and Roman) will be a good bit better next year. That'll be good for everyone. Does the Red-Blue alignment (which schools in which) stay the same?

Finally, a great and under-appreciated job by Tim Roken.

SE Pennsylvania POY

Getting about that time of year to name a SE PA POY. I’m going with Trey Blair. Have you guys seen his Hudl tape, it’s seriously ridiculous.
I like the fact that he never comes off the field instead of only one way player, hence POY. Know argument that CL is soft (and that’s hard to counter) but a lot of highlights against Downingtowns and SF in there.
McCord and Ortega have to be on the list too but both were out a few games (know that’s not their fault- just a fact). Anybody else on the list??
