The Portal

I intensely dislike the portal for reasons made clear in this article in The Athletic. I think the implications for hs football are already pretty clear.

Transfer portal chaos is overwhelming the college football calendar — and it’s going to get worse

By David Ubben
College football’s calendar offers a uniquely chaotic challenge. And it’s about to get worse.

On Friday, a 15-day window opened for coaches to freely contact and visit high school recruits. On Saturday, most of the sport’s conference championship games were played, with spots in the College Football Playoff at stake.

On Sunday, the CFP announced the four-team field, and bowl participants learned their matchups.

On Monday, the transfer portal opened, and by lunchtime on the East Coast, more than 350 players had entered.

In two weeks, high school prospects in the Class of 2024 can begin signing their national letters of intent, and the vast majority of the nation’s top prospects will do so.

Plenty of things about college football have never made sense. But now, with the sport having its own version of free agency via the portal, college football is particularly ill-equipped. In the middle of all the transfer chaos: a little thing we call the College Football Playoff.

Only college football would conduct its offseason in the middle of its postseason. And next year, adding a 12-team Playoff will make a messy situation only messier.

College football is not a pro sport, no matter how much more it resembles one by the day. Pro sports are pure business. College sports pretend to be non-profit and are still inextricably tied to an academic calendar.

That makes finding solutions difficult. And for most players who decide to transfer, it means leaving campuses at the end of the fall semester and trying to find new ones by the time the spring semester begins. Most want to maximize their immediate impact, and that means enrolling before spring practice begins.

One of the biggest names to enter the portal on Monday was Ohio State starting quarterback Kyle McCord. If this was 2024, he’d be preparing for a Playoff game now but clearly might still need to enter the portal at season’s end. Next year, already tiny windows for decision-making will get even smaller.

This is what happens when a sport has no central leadership making decisions for the good of the sport on behalf of the people within it. If college sports had been proactive about allowing player movement, we might not be here.

But the reactionary leadership focused on hopes of avoiding costly lawsuits that would lead to athletes becoming employees and implode the outdated economic structure of the sport.

If the NCAA, which is simply the schools, tried to tighten any of the rule changes that have given players more freedom and more earning power, it would be served with a lawsuit in weeks, if not days. And lawyers would point to the Alston decision as a precedent when the Supreme Court ruled unanimously against the NCAA’s ability to limit players’ education-related compensation.

It’s a problem with no path to a meaningful solution. Even if athletes eventually are made employees — likely a question of when, rather than if — the academic calendar still looms.

Pro sports don’t have to tackle this. The NFL? The NBA? Their calendars make sense. In the NBA, the Finals end in mid-June. A few days to a week or so later, the draft is held. Two weeks later, free agency begins.

In the NFL, the season ends in February, and free agency begins in March. The draft happens in late April. Roster building is separate from the people on the roster trying to win games and championships.

It used to be mostly like this in college football.

Bowl season held a bit more meaning than it does now, and coaches could focus mostly on high school recruiting in December while they prepared for the bowls.

The season ended, and coaching staffs sprinted to the finish line with last-minute recruiting efforts before national signing day in February. But the sport gradually backed itself into a chaotic situation that benefits no one.

It added the early signing period in 2017, with the intent of shortening the recruiting process for prospects who knew which schools they wanted to attend. Almost immediately, it killed the buzz and excitement for what used to be National Signing Day. Most meaningful roster additions now are done by December, squeezed in the week before Christmas when teams are preparing for bowl games. This year, programs will have their classes largely wrapped on Dec. 20.

The day that does still have juice happened Monday when a flood of big-name quarterbacks highlighted the opening of the portal, college football’s newest roster-building holiday.

In 2021, the NCAA eliminated the requirement for transfers to sit out a season, giving all graduate transfers and first-time transfers immediate eligibility after leaving their current schools. The cost of leaving has never been lower. The benefits have never been higher. All three of the quarterbacks who are Heisman Trophy finalists this year began their careers elsewhere. And Nebraska coach Matt Rhule made headlines last week when he correctly said out loud that top-tier quarterbacks will earn between $1 million and $2 million.

Cruising the portal is now integral to roster building, giving coaches the ability to fill holes in their rosters by signing players who can make an immediate impact. Players can boost their own NIL (name, image and likeness) earnings by jumping from one school to another, earning more playing time or finding a better situation.

It’s so important that programs making coaching changes are heavily incentivized to have a new head coach or coordinator in place by the time the portal opens so they can be best positioned to lure players from the portal and keep their own players out of it. It moved up the coaching carousel calendar to earlier in the year than ever.

College staffs have to scout players whose names have entered and ideally, host them on visits. Players have to field dozens of calls, sort through their contenders and find time to make visits before another player grabs an open scholarship.

Most often, the process begins and ends in a few weeks, a far cry from the patience of high school recruiting that usually takes place for one to three years and features official visits for months and as many unofficial visits as players can afford to take.

Next year, 12 coaching staffs will be preparing for Playoff games six days after the portal opens.

Players on teams in the Playoff either can hold their decisions to enter the portal and further rush a hectic decision-making process or leave the team, hurt their teammates’ chances of success and be branded as quitters.

Meanwhile, coaching staffs are left to juggle preparing for more meaningful postseason games, recruiting high schools, re-recruiting their rosters to stay out of the portal while scouting and recruiting players in the portal throughout December.

Coaches can’t give full attention to roster building or winning the most meaningful games that decide how a coach, team and season are remembered. Both are of equal importance.

Some players are making portal decisions without ever visiting their future homes.

Maybe the season could move a bit earlier to allow some relief, but college football is always going to claim New Year’s Day as its postseason holiday, and the January national title game isn’t moving in the 12-team Playoff era.

Free agency in college football is here. But the calendar isn’t built to accommodate it. And the result is a chaotic month that will be worse this time next year.

Parkland Does the Unlikely (Hoops)

Pretty wild March for the Parkland Trojans, who become the first District 11 team since Parkland in 2004 to make the PIAA Finals in the largest basketball classification. This team is coached by Eddie Ohlson, who was the point guard on that 2004 team. The obvious story in the Valley is that they went through two Philly Catholic League teams to get here - beating Roman Catholic last weekend and Archbishop Wood on Tuesday night. I think it's the first time a D11 team has beaten a PCL team in the 4A or 6A playoffs. I know Parkland was previously 0-5 against Roman, most notably losing with the Sam Iorio (pro in Europe), Devante Cross (NFL), Kenny Yeboah (NFL) team in quarterfinals which is the best D11 basketball team in my memory. I know the PCL doens't win every year (Reading is the defending champ, who lost in the final 4), but it's clearly a better brand of basketball, so a pretty collosal set of wins for Lehigh Valley hoops as a whole.

If the win, it will be the first D11 champ in the biggest class since Whitehall won 4A in 1982. Also in moments of symmetry, the star of that Whitehall team was Scott Coval, who played at William and Mary and was an assistant at W&M and Penn State before coming back to the Valley as the head coach at DeSales for the last 28 seasons. His son Nick is the star of this Parkland team.

What's crazy is that I wouldn't say it's a team overflowing with talent. Nick Coval is a Davidson commit and a 2,000 point scorer in his career, and is obviously very good. But he's a 6'2 shooting guard who isn't exactly a physically dominant player. He's their only college prospect - four of their other seven guys in the rotation are football players, quarterback Luke Spang (going to Franklin & Marshall to play football), wide receiver Connor Johns (going to UPenn to play football), tight end/defensive end Robbie Ruisch (going to East Stroudsburg to play football), and backup quarterback Blake Nassry (just a freshman, he's one to watch in both sports, he hit two monster free throws down the stretch of the Wood game, very impressive compsure for a 9th grader in addition to being 6'4 and athletic). I don't follow high school basketball super closely, I know that Central York was 5th in District 3, but has been hot in the tournament and has three low-level Division I players in their lineup (Patriot League types?).

I've heard this is one of the best sophomore and freshman classes in the wpial in a long time. Here's some early recognition

What's everyone's thought on these private school football factors like mater dei, St Thomas Aquinas, and here in PA SJP competing in the state plyoff

These type schools book a national schedule, are in high populated areas and go out and recruit these major talent. Now you are seeing the best talent from NJ and Pennsylvania transferring into schools like sjp. Public schools will have a generational team that comes around once in a decade only to get blown out by a team assembled. It's not just football either it's wrestling and basketball (Imhotep in Pa) as well. Is this just the direction highschool sports is heading. These kids will get recruited to these factors knowing they will have a better chance of getting a scholarship. Not all private schools are doing this either so I don't believe separating playoffs is the answer.

St. Joseph's Prep 2020 vs. _________

The conversation has to be had - is this years St. Joseph's Prep team the best state champ we've had? I've long been a proponent of the 2004 Pittsburgh Central Catholic team being the best Big School (4A until 2015, 6A since) champ in the 32 years of state playoffs. I still think their playoff run is the best, but that's a function of their competition as much as anything. So, as a thought/quarantine experiment, I wanted to spark discussion about this year's Prep team against the best state champs I think we've had. Since I mentioned the Vikings - they're up first

Sean Kinney Commits to Lafayette (football)

Nazareth offensive and defensive tackle Sean Kinney (6’3 290) announced today that he is committing to Lafayette to continue his college football career in the Lehigh Valley. Lafayette went 9-3 this year, won the Patriot League, and made their first trip to the FCS playoffs since 2013. Nazareth head coach Tom Falzone played wide receiver at Lafayette, graduating in 2000.

Kinney has played left tackle for the Blue Eagles since his freshman season. He earned All State honors as a junior on both sides of the ball and is almost guaranteed to do the same this year. He finished his season with 78 tackles, 22 TFL, and nine sacks. Parkland coach Tim Moncman said Kinney is the best defensive lineman in the Lehigh Valley in his memory. Kid can play.

However, it is mind boggling that Kinney will play FCS football in college. Kinney is the #3 ranked heavyweight in the country coming into his senior season that will leave him the most decorated heavyweight in Pennsylvania history. Kinney is 90-4, was the first freshman state finalist ever in Pa at heavyweight, and is a two-time state champ. A win in March, almost guaranteed, will make him the first 3x state champ at heavyweight and the first 4x state finalist at heavy. Only an 8-6 OT loss to current Iowa State heavyweight Nate Schon keeps him from being a four-timer. He has 70 pins in 94 career matches, and both of his state finals wins are shutouts over nationally ranked opponents.

Kinney was at the top of Cael Sanderson’s board as the next heavyweight at Penn State. Sanderson made it to four different Nazareth football games this fall in an effort to woo Kinney, who also holds offers from Oklahoma, Iowa State, NC State, Michigan, Missouri, and Lehigh. Penn State has had Kinney on an official visit dueinf a football weekend and even gave him permission to try and play both sports in State College. But he has been adamant during the recruiting process that he only wanted football at the next level. Kind of wild that the best heavyweight ever in Pennsylvania will have his wrestling career just end in Hershey.

PA Preps High School Football Talk

Find out what some of the top players in the state are saying about football now!

......................................................................................................

Q&A with Pennridge outside linebacker Ryan Rowe
How did the high school football season go overall?
“My sophomore season was awesome. I put a lot of work in the weight room last summer knowing I would be younger and I felt prepared physically out there. I was happy with my adjustments to the speed of the game. I also had great coaching to help me progress technically. Thankful for that amount of experience as a sophomore.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Right now I’m focused on wrestling. My High School, Pennridge, is headed out to Hershey tomorrow to compete for a state championship. We have very intense workouts but when the season ends I’m immediately focused on football and improving speed, strength and explosiveness.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Last year was an investment year with the addition of a new coaching staff. Coach Beller has committed a lot of time and energy into the off season getting Pennridge back to where they belong. I’m optimistic about next year. We will be ready.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“In wrestling, your opponent doesn’t matter as much as you wrestling within yourself and performing at your best. Sometimes it’s good enough and sometimes it isn’t. But you learn the value of preparation and focusing only on what you can control. The opponent doesn’t matter to me. We each have to do our jobs collectively and the results will take care of themselves.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“It doesn’t matter to me. I will be ready. We will be ready. We are focused on what we can control.”

......................................................................................................
Q&A with Fleetwood Area running back Jason Petion
How did the high school football season go overall?
“Honestly it improved towards the end of the season, we finished with a 3 game winning streak.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Currently going to team lifts and working our at Garage Strength Gym in Maiden Creek with my trainers.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Next football season I’m completely confident, I truly feel like we got something special coming up.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I’m not really all too worried that of course there’s going to be a team or two that is going to be a dog fight but we go into every game with the mentality of winning any way possible.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Not all too worried on that part either but there’s definitely a couple of players from the teams we play this year.”

......................................................................................................
Q&A with Central Valley running back Jance Henry Jr.
How did the high school football season go overall?
“Overall our season was ok, we didn’t win a conference, Wpial or state title. That doesn’t sit well with me, that’s not the standard at Central Valley.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I train 5 days per week, I’m playing 7 on 7, I’ll be running track this spring, I’ll spend time in the film room with Rushel Shell and I’ll get my position training at Tote Academy here at home and RB Academy in Miami, Florida.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel like we have a chance to be as good as we want to be next season as long as we put the work in and play for each other.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I prepare for every opponent the same, I respect them all equally. I’m just going to try to make every game my best game.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“This is our first year in 3A so I don’t really know much about the players in this classification.”

......................................................................................................
Q&A with Schuylkill Haven cornerback Leyden Hertz
How did the high school football season go overall?
“This year went amazing, we went from having 4 wins the past 2 years to making it all the way to the district championship. For me as an individual it also went great. On the defensive side I was named 1st team all-county, all-area and all-state as a CB. I also made honorable mention for the Big Eastern team and finished the season with 6 interceptions and one touchdown allowed. For offense I was named 2nd team all-county WR and averaged 14.6 yards per catch.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I am currently in basketball season right now, we made districts and leagues but after the season I plan on spending my spring and summer lifting daily and going to agility classes, I want to work on my footwork as well as my explosiveness. I also plan on attending college camps and visiting campuses to really get my name out there and bring my recruiting up more.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“We had a great team last year and we will definitely lose [some] good components to our squad but I feel like we have some studs on the team and we can be just as great if not better than last year if we put our focus on where it needs to be during the season, but more importantly the offseason.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I would say Blue Mountain will be our toughest opponent. Not only is it a rivalry game but they also are well coached but are [also] a bigger school and have a deeper roster.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“I would say Dante Carr, he’s a great player and had good size, he has great speed and is just an overall good football player.”

......................................................................................................
Q&A with Big Spring strong safety Spencer Cachara
How did the high school football season go overall?
“Our season as a whole was successful. We made districts which is a big accomplishment for Big Spring.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I only play football so I’m lifting and running until next fall.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I have a good feeling that next season will be very successful as well. We have a lot of returning starters combined with a lot of young talent.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“In my opinion, I feel that Susquehanna Township will be our toughest opponent. We have a new schedule this year so I’m unfamiliar with some of the teams.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Our toughest individual player would have to be Lex Cyrus from Susquehanna Township.”
