Shortage of Officials for HS FB

I imagine this is a problem throughout the state....not just District-3.

Mid-Penn scheduling some football games for Thursday, Saturday nights in fall due to shortage of officials: ‘We’re hopeful for an influx’

Updated: Mar. 08, 2022, 3:51 p.m. | Published: Mar. 08, 2022, 2:20 p.m.

Plans to move some Mid-Penn high school football games to Thursdays and Saturdays, as well as continuing to play on Friday nights in the fall, are moving forward.

Mid-Penn Conference athletic directors and coaches have been provided skeleton schedules, Lower Dauphin Athletic Director Dave Bitting said. He floated the proposed changes to the conference.
“There’s no formal vote,” he said. “We’re doing one division at a time. Schools are working on adjusting their schedules.”

Most schools are in favor of the change, Bitting said. And, so is the Capital Area Football Officials Association.

“We did it out of necessity,” said Jerry Hocker, Mid-Penn Conference football assigner. “Each year we are losing quality officials to retirements and injuries, and we have not seen an uptick in replacements.”

The move is beneficial to allow “quality officials” to “work more often and not jeopardize the level of officiating,” Hocker said.

Games on Thursdays and Saturdays are most likely going to continue for at least the next two years, Bitting said. It will also support temporary relief to bus drivers and maintenance crews.

“We’re hopeful for an influx,” he said. “The issue we’ll run into is how quickly we can get officials up to the varsity level across the board. You don’t just walk out of the class and you are suddenly a varsity official. It takes a lot of games to get to that point.”

The Mid-Penn Conference needs about 20 more “seasoned officials to be able to go back to having all of the games on a Friday night,” Hocker said.

“We have had a few dedicated officials sign up over the last couple of years, but you cannot just jump right into a varsity football game without some on-field experience,” Hocker said. “It takes a couple of seasons working at the lower levels to be able to handle a varsity game.”

Beginner officials should understand that they need to put in the time, Hocker said. There has been a misconception that once you pass the PIAA-administered rules test, then you can officiate at the highest level, he said.

“They want and expect to work at the highest level without putting the time in,” Hocker said. “That’s not how it works in your daily job and it sets you up for failure. We have the tools in place within our chapter with our new official’s class that is taught by our best officials that prepare the people to sign up to complete the PIAA exam.

“This then allows you to officiate the lower levels and move your way up the ranks. We also have on-field clinics and sessions that are taught by our senior officials to help educate the committed officials who want to get better. This has been promising the last couple of years. The PIAA also has been helping in the recruitment of officials through social media and other ways. We just need the people to sign up and stay committed.”

Today’s current sports culture is another reason Hocker said he thinks people are “reluctant” to sign up to officiate.

“They do not want to put up with the unruly fans and coaches,” he said. “My take on that is that it is an issue and people, in general, need to realize that without the officials we cannot have the games. So, cheer for your kids and let the officials do their jobs.”

Steelton Highspire 2022 openers

Steelton Highspire 2022 openers.
The Rollers hope to rebound from an off year that saw them go 8-3 following their 10-0 title run of 2021 by beefing up the schedule their first two games. They open with last year’s 1A WPIAL champ and state semifinal loser Bishop Canevin (13-2) of Pittsburgh (Westwood) at the Peach Bowl Showcase in Chambersburg on Aug 26th.

Week-2 sees them in the home opener (Steelton) against District-8’s Westinghouse, last year’s District 5/8 champ who finished 10-2. The Bulldogs have one of the rising stars of Western PA in head coach Donte Green going 8-4, 7-0 and 10-2 his first three years at the helm. Last year’s City Title was their third straight. They also feature Qb Keyshawn Morsillo (6-1, 190) who finished last year with 1551py and 778ry with 33 Tds. No worries, the Rollers counter with Qb Alex Erby (6-4, 210, jr) with 3272py at 83%, 161 of 193! This is good news as they often have trouble finding non-conf opponents. Note; their first undefeated season came in 1898.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State remains in the mix for St. Joseph’s Prep linebacker Josiah Trotter as he cuts down his list of options ahead of the spring.

The Nittany Lions were in the latest top five that Trotter posted to social media Friday afternoon. Penn State is joined by Virginia Tech, Clemson, West Virginia and South Carolina on the list.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Trotter is a four-star recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings, and he’s ranked as the No. 7 player in Pennsylvania, the No. 26 linebacker nationally and the No. 269 overall prospect in the Class of 2023.

Trotter is ranked as the No. 4 linebacker and the No. 12 overall prospect in Pennsylvania.

Trotter has football bloodlines. His father, Jeremiah, played for the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders in the NFL, while his older brother, Jeremiah Jr., just finished his freshman year at Clemson.

Penn State originally offered Trotter in May 2020.

Trotter released a list of his top eight schools last month, and the three schools that missed the cut in his latest update were Texas A&M, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Trotter helped St. Joseph’s Prep to the PIAA Class 6A title game last fall, and he finished the year with 114 tackles, nine for loss, with 2.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries and six passes defensed. He made PennLive’s All-Pennsylvania Football Team for the 2021 season.

Penn State currently has eight commitments in the Class of 2023, and the class ranks No. 1 in the Big Ten and No. 3 nationally in the 247Sports composite rankings.

Trotter is part of an impressive class of linebackers in Pennsylvania for the current cycle, along with Brashear four-star Ta’Mere Robinson, Archbishop Wood four-star Semaj Bridgeman and Pennridge four-star Phil Picciotti.

Whos the best

Typical offseason talk with my buddies today on the golf course. My Delco buddies and I got to talking today, and the question came up "who is the best team from Delco in the playoff era?" Now I'm a little too young to remember those Ridley juggernaut teams from the late 80s/early 90s, but the 1990 team was the choice from my older friends today. My friend that's my age and myself picked the 99 Strath Haven team(Mark Jones, Mike Connor, Josh Hannum, Zach Love, one of the 9 Mulherns I believe lol, etc). Anyone care to be the tiebreaking vote? Is there a team that should be ahead of those 2? There was a handful of teams that also were mentioned, just curious as to what the other football heads think

Hope everyone is having a good winter. Only 6 months or so until summer camp

Penn Hills HC

Any scoop on who is interested in the HC job at Penn Hills. Should be a reasonably appealing job. The football program has a great history and they have talent. Julian Dugger is going to be in his 3rd season as a starter as just a junior and will be one of the better WPIAL QB's. They have a terrific junior at RB in Amir Keys.

Penn Hills does need to work on community support for football. The atmosphere at Penn Hills games is just dreadful in comparison to most WPIAL schools. This past season I was at their game on Homecoming night and I don't think they had even 500 fans in the stands. At Homecoming. It was like a morgue. I can see why LeDonne wanted to go to Pine-Richland where the stands will be packed.

Q&A with Warren athlete Tommy Nyquist

How did the high school football season go overall?
“My high school football season was definitely full of ups and downs. It [was unfortunate] to start off the season with your senior quarterback getting hurt on the third play of your first scrimmage but it also led to Eric stepping up like he did. The season for me was overall a great time and not just because of the way we played but because of the people I played for and played with.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Well right now I am playing basketball and working out almost every day just so I can get back to my pre-injury form and stamina.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Even though we are losing a lot of key seniors this year I think that many of the younger guys will step up next year and take on that leadership role and next year will be another successful season.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I haven’t really looked into next year's schedule that much but I think our biggest competitors will be Meadville, Oil City, and General Mclane just because of the fact they will be bringing back lots of talent.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“It’s hard to say exactly who our toughest competitor will be, but a few guys that will be a struggle to stop will be the running backs from Meadville and Oil City. I also believe that General Mclane has a few skill position guys that are coming back that really helped them this year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I for sure want to play sports in college but I haven’t really made the full commitment to whether it’s basketball, football, or even both.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
