Pennridge defeats quakertown for Hollenbach's last game

34-7, was really a shutout till pennridge put in their JV. They carried Hollenbach off the field on their shoulders. Name another pennridge coach who went out that way?

Also amazing job in a rather sad incident: during the coin toss an elderly person collapsed and had to be resuscitated right in the stands by Pennridge's trainers... they saved a life today really amazing job...

Happy thanksgiving to all

5A East

Gateway D7 12-1 vs Hollidaysburg D6 8-3, Saturday 1, Altoona HS.

Grove City (11-1) suffered their only loss of the season on a missed 28-yd field goal as time expired allowing Hollidaysburg to move on with a tight, 30-27 win. Their opponent this week, 2nd seeded Gateway, raced out to a 21-7 lead then hung on to win their first district title since 1986 by knocking off top seeded Penn Trafford (11-2) 21-16, the only team to defeat them this season. This one could be entertaining with both averaging 36ppg and Gateway allowing 18ppg while Hollidaysburg allows 24. It’s at the Mansion where the Gators are favored by 5.90 points.
Governor Mifflin D3 12-1 vs Manheim Central D3 12-0, Friday 7, Hershey Park Stadium.
Governor Mifflin pulled off the upset of the tournament last week defeating top ranked Harrisburg (11-1) at Severance Field 26-14, the very field where they were eliminated by the Cougars last year 46-21. As impressive was their come back from a 14-0 deficit….against a previously vaulted defense. As surprising was Harrisburg’s mistakes resulting in touchdowns called back and turnovers. Mustang FB Isaac Ruoss battered them for 194 yards on 38 carries. Their opponent this week, Manheim Central, jumped Cocalico (10-2) early, getting a 21-7 lead before the Eagles came back only to lose a heartbreaker to their bitter Lancaster rival Central 21-20. The Barons are the only team to beat Cocalico this year. Talk about a trophy Room; Manheim Central has 16 district titles and 21 district final appearances. Like so many of these games involving rematches, Governor Mifflin and Central are coming off emotional games. The Mustangs are favored by 3.46 points.

5A West

Springfield D1 13-0 vs Unionville D1 13-1, Friday 7, Springfield HS.

Springfield’s stout defense held Upper Dublin (8-4) to 70 yards rushing and 9 1st downs, disallowing a score until under 2 minutes left in the game to defeat the Cardinals 17-6. It was still a nice effort by UD holding the Cougars well below their 36ppg average. They move on to play Unionville who had to overcome a 14-0 1st quarter deficit to defeat Paoletti-less Marple Newtown (8-5) 36-21. Quarterack Anthony Paoletti, Delco’s all time leading passer missed the game with his arm in a sling after an injury sustained against Upper Moreland the prior week. Wide receiver Alden Mathes started in his place. This is their first road game since October 20th while Springfield enjoys their fourth straight home game. Springfield’s home field and defense puts it in their favor by 17. 23 points.
Archbishop Wood D12 9-2 vs Wyoming Valley West D4 7-6, Saturday 1, Northern Lehigh HS.
The Viking’s outstanding O-Line dominated Gratz (8-4), allowing Nasir Peoples to rush for 176 yards and 4 touchdowns in a 36-6 win against Gratz to secure another District 12 title. As the defending 5A champ, they move on to the quarterfinals to play surprising Wyoming Valley West, upset winners over EPC-South rep Whitehall (9-4) 32-21 at Whitehall in the District 2/4/11 title game. They’re on a roll winning their last 5 games to get here by an average score of 42-10. They always have big physical lines but often come up short on speed. Archbishop Wood is on a roll as well winning their last 7 by an average score of 42-8 with 2 consecutive shutouts. Wood by 8.04 points.

6A East

Coatesville D1 12-1 vs Garnet Valley D1 12-1, Friday 7, Garnet Valley HS.
The Red Raiders gouged Pennsbury early (398 total yards) getting a 28-0 halftime lead to eventually Mercy Rule the Falcons in a 42-2 district semifinal win. They have multiple weapons with the ability to beat you up top or on the ground. Their principle weapon is Qb Ricky Ortega with 2630 yards passing and 34 touchdowns. He keys an explosive offense averaging 45ppg. Add in a fast defense allowing only 14ppg to see how they can make good football teams like Pennsbury look bad. Next up is Garnet Valley who defeated Pennridge 28-20 with running backs Matt Lassik and Danny Guy each getting 146 yards rushing for the Jags. Their only loss is Springfield 14-7 but they’re the underdog here by 12.59 points.

St. Joseph’s Prep D12 11-0 vs Parkland D11 13-0, Saturday 1, Bethlehem Stadium.
Parkland beat Freedom (7-6) 30-6 to win their 6th consecutive District -11 title, shutting the Patriots down to a single score….on a trick play. Underrated Michael Ruisch completed 12 of 17 passes for 192 yards and a score while the Trojan D held Freedom to 190 total yards and 5 first downs. 6 straight district titles! They’ll play St. Joseph’s Prep who won their 25th consecutive game and District-11 title defeating Public League champ Northeast (7-3) 31-0. Marques Mason had 106 yards rushing on 12 carries. They come into this one averaging 33 points per game with a one of the best defenses in the playoffs at any classification in terms of points allowed at 7ppg! Hawks are favored by 14.61 points.

6A West

Cumberland Valley D3 10-2 vs Manheim Township D3 11-1, Saturday 6, Hershey Park Stadium.
Cumberland Valley’s punishing ground game battered the Black Knights of Hempfield (8-4) for 246 yards in a 28-7 district semifinal game. FB Galen Witmer had 124 with Jake Palmer at 86. Jared Plessinger had a strong outing completing 9 of 14 for 126 yards and a score. They advance to the district final Saturday at Hershey Park Stadium to play Manheim Township. The 2nd seeded Streaks disposed of nemesis Wilson 28-14. Interestingly, they have a win against Central Dauphin, one of two teams (Harrisburg) to defeat CV. Both teams are pretty straight forward in approach where CV chooses to batter you with their bruising ground game then zing you with a quarterback who can deliver. They wear you down with multiple backs whereas the Streaks get you off balance with quarterback Luke Emge’s accurate throws or Grayson Sallade's running ability. The math says they are favored by 7.32 but at Hershey Park….I don’t know!

Pine Richland D7 13-0 vs State College D6 10-2, Saturday 1, Hempfield HS, Greensburg.
Pine Richland had no trouble with Central Catholic (10-3) trouncing the Vikings 42-7, rushing for 202 yards and getting their 10th Mercy Rule game in their 13 games. Central Catholic getting mercy ruled! Phil Jurkovec had another stellar performance completing 16 of 24 passes for 291 yards and 3 scores. Their opponent this weekend, State College, had difficulty with undefeated Delaware Valley (12-1) falling behind 14-0 early in the 2nd half. Thereon it was all SC who exploded for 3 touchdowns in 8 minutes with Qb Tommy Friberg completing 9 of 9 passes for 178 yards following a dismal first half throwing 4 picks during a 5 for 11 spree for 39 yards! Falling behind DV by 2 scores doesn’t bode well here against the multiple weapons Pine Richland will throw at them. SC has some skill and people that can hurt you but the Rams have more and re favored by 16.96 points.

3A East

Conwell Egan D12 6-6 vs Palisades D11 13-0, Saturday 1, Ne Supersite, Phila.
Conwell Egan avenged a 31-21 regular season loss to Lansdale Catholic (5-7) by defeating the Crusaders in 1st round action 44-20. Patrick Garwo got 194 yards on 28 carries and 3 scores for the Eagles who advance to play undefeated Colonial League champ Palisades who survived Lehighton (12-1) 48-42. The Pirates punishing ground game featured Trey Gretzinger’s 224 yards rushing on 12 carries, Jared Colletti’s 205 on 16 carries and Ethan Baker’s 94 yards on 12 carries. But that was against a Schuylkill Football Conference team. This is the Philadelphia Catholic League with CEC winning in a WAR by 2.40 points.

Scranton Prep D2 14-0 vs Middletown D3 14-0, Friday 7, Bethlehem Stadium.
The Cavaliers used an effective running game while their defense forced 5 Loyalsock (8-5) turnovers, paving the way to a 31-28 win. Matt Gilmartin led all rusher with 196 yards with Qb Leo O’Boyle completing 7 of 11 for 98 yards and rushing for 88 on 6 carries. Middletown is next, a team that beat them last year at this juncture 40-13. The Blue Raiders got here by routing Wyomissing 49-0. All time rush leader Brady Fox had 212 yards while Jose Lopez had 124. Middletown lost in the state title game last year to Beaver Falls. Raiders roll by 17.78 points.

3A West

Forest Hills D6 11-1 vs Sharon D10 9-3, Saturday 1, Penns Manor HS.
District-6 power Forest Hills defeated Huntingdon (10-2) 32-25 to win their 10th District title and 400th win in school history. They play in the rugged Laurel Highlands Conference with Bishop Guilfoyle who they lost to 24-21 (!), Bishop McCort and Johnstown. Tough conference. Their opponent Sharon, blew out Karns City (7-5) 67-17. Sophomore Qb Lane Voytik with 2154 yards on the year becomes the first sophomore in Mercer County to reach the 2000 yard mark. Got a big arm and threw for 233 yards vs KC. Nice run/pass balance with Jordan Wilson getting 164 yards on 11 carries but they love to fling it. Tigers are good but lose to the Rangers by 3.45 points.

Quaker Valley D7 12-1 vs……..Bye
Quaker Valley beat previously unbeaten Aliquippa (12-1) 2-0 for their first district title in school history. The win avenges a regular season 22-7 loss, their only loss. 5 turnovers and 20 penalties for 195 yards kept the Quips bottled up with 2 of the 5 turnovers coming in the red zone. QV moves into a bye week awaiting the winner of Forest Hills-Sharon.

4A East

Imhotep D11 11-1 vs Valley View D2 10-3, Friday 7, Northern Lehigh HS,
Valley View took 2 overtime periods to topple top seeded Berwick (10-3) 24-17 and advance to the quarterfinals against Imhotep who had no trouble with Cardinal O’Hara (7-4), winning 40-7. One of Valley View’s losses was to Delware Valley 28-21, who lost last week in the 6A playoff to State College 21-14. ICS is favored but not by much....3.22....up in Slatington at Northern Lehigh HS

Selinsgrove D4 11-2 vs Bethlehem Catholic D11 11-2, Friday 7, Shamokin HS.
Selinsgrove beat Bellefonte (10-3) 37-3 who were hobbled with injuries to their quarterback, leading receiver and running back. That was bad news with Seals quarterback Logan Leiby on target all day as he’s been all season completing 12 of 17 passes for 238 yards and 3 scores. He’s thrown for 3448 yards at a 66% clip. Their opponent Friday is Bethlehem Catholic who had no trouble with Pottsgrove (11-2), racing out to a 42-14 half time lead before winning 49-14. All totaled, they rushed for 358 yards with Matthew Bisko getting 122 yards and Zahir Seabrooks adding 144. Beca is favored but not by much in Shamokin by 3.81 points as the Seals keep it close with an extreme passing attack.

4A West

Berks Catholic D3 12-0 vs Harrisburg-Bishop McDevitt D3 10-2, Friday 1, Hershey Park Stadium.
Top seeded Berks Catholic used a punt returned for a scores and two Pick-6’s to eliminate East Pennsboro (9-3) 48-7. It was all over at the half with the Saints holding a 42-0 lead. Syracuse bound Cooper Lutz rushed for 146 yards on 6 carries while the defense held form, not allowing a touchdown by the 1st unit all year!
Bishop McDevitt got back to the district final beating Lampeter Strasburg (7-5) 47-14. Qb Chase Diehl completed 13 of 16 passes for 224 yards and 2 scores. Running back Qualik Davis scorched the Pioneers for 190 yards on 27 carries. Berks big at 30.15.

Cathedral Prep D10 11-0 vs Thomas Jefferson D7 11-1, Friday 7, Veterans Stadium, Erie.
Cathedral Prep had a bye while Thomas Jefferson was having little trouble with Montour (9-3) in the Wpial final defeating them 27-0. This was TJ’s 8th district title and 7th under Coach Bill Cherpak. It was also their 3rd shutout of the postseason. They move on to play Cathedral Prep who defeated them at this stage last year 30-13 (14-13 through 3rd!) giving them their only loss of the year in a 12-1 campaign. Prep went on to defeat Berks Catholic 28-14 and Imhotep 27-20 to win the 4A championship. ECP by 23.58

(Defending state champ underlined)

1A East

Bishop Guilfoyle D6 12-0 vs Homer-Center D6 11-1, Friday 7, Mansion Park Stadium.
The Marauders out of Altoona won their 60th straight game, beating Juniata Valley (8-4) in the District 6 semifinal 59-13 to advance to play Homer-Center who defeated Ferndale 18-0. HC finished 2nd in the Heritage FB Conference to undefeated Ligonier Valley (AA, 13-0) losing 35-6. Bishop Guilfoyle defeated playoff teams Bishop McCort AA (10-3) and Forest Hills AAA (11-1) in pursuit of their 4th consecutive state title! Nothing like a home playoff game at the Mansion! Marauders roll by 25.62 points.

Steelton Highspire D3 10-2 vs Williams Valley D11 13-0, Friday 7, Milton Hershey HS.
Steel High had no trouble with 5-8 Wyalusing from D4, winning 45-7. They’ll play undefeated Williams Valley from D11’s Tri Valley who defeated Lackawanna-2 runner-up Old Forge (11-2) 44-25. Unfortunately they may have lost standout running back Dylan Rabuck to an ankle last week. He has 2902 yards rushing this year, 2362 last year and 1065 as a soph. But they have depth if Rabuck can’t go. Steelton beat Williams Valley (12-2) last year 24-20 but this is a more senior adversary this year going against a porous Roller D. The game is almost a home game just down the road from Steelton in Hershey at Milton Hershey High. But the Vikings have a 47ppg offense supported by a dominating defense allowing 13ppg on average. Williams Valley by 15.93.

1A West

Imani Christian Academy D7, 11-2 vs Jeannette D7 12-2, Saturday-noon, Robert Morris Univ.
Imani Christian avenged a 41-26 regular season loss to California by topping the previously undefeated Trojans 30-24. At the same time Jeannette avenged their only loss of the season beating Clairton (10-3) 18-7. The Bears won the first encounter 40-6. So both are here after expending a lot of emotion for yet another game packed with even more emotion. ICA and Jeannette met Sept 23rd in a game that was called at 4:30 in the 4th with Jeannette winning 54-36; +30 penalties, players ejected, etc. That’s probably why this one is at noon Saturday. Could get tight with Jayhawks off a head-banger with Clairton and Rochester the week before! Jeannette prevails by 10.57 points.

Ridgeway-Johnsburg D9 9-3 vs Farrell D10 10-2, Friday 7, Clarion Univ.
Like many teams in the 6 classification format, Ridgeway got a rematch in the postseason to beat Curwensville 9-7 and win their 2nd straight District 9 title. Curwensville (9-3) won the first encounter 14-11. The Elkers move on to play always strong Farrell who defeated Northern Bedford in a good one. Behind 19-18 at halftime, the Steeler’s played shutdown football the rest of the way, holding the Black Knights scoreless in a 34-19 win. They beat Ridgeway last year 20-7 in the quarterfinals and it should be competitive again with Farrell young in key spots. This one has the Elkers in a mild upset by 7.9 points.

2A East

Southern Columbia D4 13-0 vs Neumann Goretti D12 11-0, Friday 7, Lehighton HS.

If you’re looking for the top program in the state look no farther than Catawissa where the Tigers accumulated 6 1A State Titles, 7 Silver Medals, another state title in 2015 at 2A and last year’s Silver Medal losing to Steel Valley in the 2A final with a young group that is back. Also won 10 straight District 4 titles (25 overall) and hold the record for 15 state finals appearances. Phew! Eat your heart out Central Bucks West, Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Clairton and others. They are at it again with another monster offense scoring 47ppg and a D allowing 12. They beat Mount Carmel last week 49-14. But their most impressive win was at Selinsgrove where they beat the 4A Seals (11-2) 49-28. The Seals play Beca this week while SCA tackles Neumann Goretti, fresh off an impressive 44-7 win over Schuylkill Haven (8-5). With Leddie Brown and 6 other D1 recruits going up against SCA’s 5 D1 recruits, it should be a war. SCA returns sophomore running back Gaige Garcia who set the state record for a freshman last year rushing for 1944 yards and most of last year’s team including the entire O-Line. Garcia has 1808 yards this year. Schedule difficulty leans heavy to Neumann but the math says its Southern by 3.36 points.

Dunmore D2 13-0 vs Ligonier Valley D6 13-0, Saturday-noon, Hershey Park Stadium.
With one of their more dominate defense…. and they’ve had a few, Dunmore overwhelmed District-3’s Newport Buffaloes (10-2) 35-6 and advance to play Ligonier Valley who edged Bishop McCort’s Crimson Crushers (10-3), 19-12. Dunmore is one of the winningest programs in the state with a 6 year record of 87-9. They have 4 finals appearances, winning gold in 1989, and silver in 07, 12 and 14. They average 38ppg and allowed 71 points all year. They’ll need every bit of that against LV who averages 47ppg and allows 6. Big incentive losing to LV last year in the quarterfinals 39-19. LV comes in on a 2 year run of 28-1 and 44-22 the previous 5 years. Prior to LV’s resurgence the district has been dominated by Bishop Guilfoyle at the small school level recently, and by Tyrone, Bellwood-Antis, Martinsburg Central, Forest Hills and Bishop McCort historically. Ligonier is favored by 7.03 points at neutral site Hershey.

2A West

Wilmington D1 12-0 vs Clarion D9 12-0, Saturday 1, Clarion Univ.

Next to Southern, Wilmington is the deepest team in 2A returning almost everyone. They got past Greenville (9-3) last week 31-13 with another solid performance by their defense that allowed 57 points all season. Bit of a wake-up call falling behind 13-0 before rallying for 31 unanswered points. The win marked their 2nd D-10 title in a row and 12th overall. The opponent this week is District-9’s Clarion Bobcats who beat Chestnut Ridge (10-2), coming back from a 14-pt halftime deficit to win 20-14 over the favored Lions. This should be a wild one with each averaging 42ppg, supported by solid defense; Clarion allowing 11 a game, Wilmington 5. Wilmington’s pedigree says it’s a 21.66 point win. Greyhounds advance.

Steel Valley D7 11-0 vs Washington D7 12-0, Saturday 6, Robert Morris Univ.
Defending 2A State Champ Steel Valley extended its winning streak to 26 games but it wasn’t easy, going to overtime to beat Riverside (9-3) 13-10. The Ironmen are not last year’s team that crushed Wilmington 49-13 in the semifinal and Southern Columbia 49-7 in the State Final. But here they are. That group averaged 54ppg while allowing 8. This year’s averages 40 and allows 14. So they’re still at “Title Team” levels with those stats, just not as dominant. Washington beat a strong Cardinal Wuerl-North Catholic (10-3) team last week 19-14, and have been on a run since 2011 (72-10 won-loss), losing to Aliquippa 3 times and never quite getting over the hump. They get over it this time, winning by 21.66 points.

STATE TOP 20 - 6A….Nov 16th (#1 - #10)

Thought I’d take a stab at The State to get more info out as the main purpose of the rankings has always been about that. The real challenge was not to slot teams based simply where they are now in the playoffs. So you’ll see teams ranked high that have been eliminated. But again, the real purpose is to get some info out so here goes. Put this together quick so please excuse overlooked typos.

1 Pine Richland 12-0, D1; I guess the question is what can you say about this team and their spectacular quarterback that hasn’t already been said? How about….he did it again. Last week saw quarterback Phil Jurkovec top the 500 total yardage mark in a single game, rushing for 108 yards on 12 carries while passing for 434 yards on a near perfect outing, completing 18 of 20 passes for 5 scores to eliminate 5th seeded North Allegheny (8-4) 49-25. This followed their opening round rout of 8th seeded Norwin 49-14. To date, six receivers have over 300 yards in receptions led by Jason DeFrancisis and Raymond Falcone at 902 and 745 yards respectively. Two outstanding running backs in Jordan Crawford with 989 yards and Kenny White with 568 yards are their led backs not counting Jurkovec who has 815 yards rushing, giving them tremendous diversity and balance. They average 50ppg with a vastly under rated defense allowing 13ppg. Considering the load put on the defense, 13ppg is even more impressive. As the Northern-7 champ with the top seed, they’ll play last year’s WPIAL champ and State runner up Pittsburgh Central Catholic (10-2, 3rd seed) Saturday for the Wpial crown. They beat the Vikings 7 weeks ago 47-17 in Gibsonia.

2 St. Joseph’s Prep 10-0, D12; The Hawks are on a 24 game winning streak, having won the inaugural PIAA 6A State title last year with a 14-0 slate by rolling over Pittsburgh Central Catholic (14-2) 42-7. This was their 3rd state title in 4 years (!) with previous wins against Central Catholic in 2013, 35-10, and Pine Richland the following year 49-41. This year’s edition hasn’t skipped much of a beat with an offense averaging 33ppg to the previous year’s 40. Making up for that short fall is a relentless defense that has improved from last year’s 16ppg to 8ppg. How impressive is that knowing the schedule included Jesuit out of Tampa, St. Peter’s Prep from New Jersey, Archbishop Wood who they defeated 27-7 and two wins against their bitter Red rival LaSalle. They have great balance and explosiveness with duel threat Qb Marquez McCray throwing for over 1000 yards at 60% and rushing for 432 yards. His primary receivers are all strong runners after the catch; Johnny Freeman, Brandon Sanders and James Cherry who account for 58 receptions totaling 748 yards. Running backs Marques Mason and Kolbe Burrell have 171 carries for 918 yards. See Ted Silary’s great site for details. The District-12 final is this week where St Joe’s faces Northeast High (7-2), the 6A Public League champ who they defeated 44-6 last year.

3 Coatesville 11-1, D1; Like Pine Richland, Coatesville came into the season the odds on favorite to win the district and advance. And except for the stumble at Cumberland Valley early, they haven’t disappointed, winning their last 10 games while averaging 45ppg. As impressive is the defense that allows on average 15ppg while corralling most offenses except for Downingtown East who they defeated twice, 38-27 and 61-42. Looking at the game with 8th seeded Pennsbury this week; you have to respect the Falcon’s Suburban One pedigree but wonder if they can keep up with the biggest and best team they’ve played to date….on the road! But, they’ll come to play.

4 Parkland 12-0, D11; At 38ppg, Parkland has their highest scoring offense since 2012’s 11-3 team. But what really stands out is what often stands out with a Parkland team, defense. This year’s allowed 10ppg, their lowest yield since the 2007 team that went 15-1, allowing 8ppg before losing to Pittsburgh Central Catholic (16-0) in the 4A final, 21-0. So who’s surprised they’ve won 5 consecutive D-11 titles? Once again and despite a ton of grads they’re gunning for another one. As is the case with all Tim Moncman teams, they did it with great line play, a power running game and superb defense. Add in a great staff and the unending supply of talent that flows into the program to see this is one of the very best programs in the state. Considering they did this year’s rebuild in the face of highly veteran teams at Easton and Emmaus (where did they go?) makes a statement. They’ll meet the 6-seed Freedom (7-5) for the second straight year in the district final. Freedom got here beating disappointing Emmaus 26-15 (3 seed) while Parkland was taking apart 4th seeded Easton 52-10.

5 Pittsburgh Central Catholic 10-2, D7; 3rd seeded Central Catholic beat Peters Township 27-20 and Penn Hills 17-8 to advance to the WPIAL final where they’ll play Pine Richland again. With a scoring average of 29ppg, they are a shadow of last year’s team that averaged 46ppg. The defense has contained lower octane offenses but not the big boys losing to Cathedral Prep 40-7 (Game-1) and Pine Richland 47-17. But hey, it’s Central Catholic and they have a pile of talented players. Just not as ,many as Pine Richland.

6 Garnet Valley 11-1, D1; 7 Garnet Valley 11-1, D1; Garnet Valley overcame a 28 point 3rd quarter deficit to shock North Penn in 2nd round action and advance to the district semifinal against Pennridge. North Penn came into the game smokin hot, winning their last 9 games after a 0-2 start, then blowing out to a 35-7 lead here before the crash. Interestingly, the Knights ended Garnet Valley’s great season last year in the district final 48-38. So here’s G-Val again, with their best defense, allowing 15ppg, since 2013’s #1 seed that was upset by Abington, 26-21. That one was as shocking as this one! That team ended the year with a 12ppg yield and a 11-1 record. Going back farther….it was one of their best defenses since the ’07 group that lost in the 3A PIAA final to Thomas Jefferson’s Jaguars, 28-3. Ok I’ll stop. 7th seeded Pennridge is next. How exciting will that be with Garnet Valley’s great defense hosting the Rams 10-2 team featuring their outstanding defense featuring DE/LB Nick Tarburton (6-4, 245, sr). The Jags play some defense too!

7 Downingtown East 10-2, D1; Too bad this bunch isn’t playing somewhere after fielding one of the most exciting and explosive offenses in the Ches Mont-National; shades of the Big-12, them and the PAC. They had their moments, opening with an eye catching 61-44 win over North Penn at Kottmeyer. But the timing was all wrong, with the Cougars fielding one of their best teams at the same time Coatesville was in the midst of a football renaissance under Coach Matt Ortega, fielding some of the best teams to ever come through the school. The Red Raiders were the only team to beat Downingtown this year, 38-27 in the regular season then again last week, 61-42 in the 2nd round.

8 Manheim Township 10-1, D3; What a year for the 2nd seeded Streaks who’ve won 8 straight including last week’s 28-0 rout of Central Dauphin! They are a big attack at 41ppg with a bad ass D allowing 13 a game. They have a rematch this week with 3rd seeded Wilson who they beat a month ago in Lancaster 38-14. So they’ll face one pissed off Bulldog as prideful Wilson tries to settle a score against the newcomer! Big rivalry, big emotion so sit back and enjoy what should be a special game.

9 Cumberland Valley 9-2, D3; Top seeded “Big Red” looked recovered from the Harrisburg beating routing Central Dauphin East 62-9 in the 1st round of district action. All 4 top seeds advanced so it could get interesting with 2 and 3 facing off in Lancaster with Wilson visiting Manheim Township and the other Lancaster Lebanon Section One team, 4th seeded Hempfield playing CV. How about the LL-1, with 3 of the final 4 teams in disricts! They’ve got some players including a duel threat quarterback but no game experience against a Wing-T this well develpoed.

10 State College 9-2, D6; Averaging 47ppg makes this SC’s highest scoring offense in over 20 years! And they are the only team to hang for most of a game with highly touted Harrisburg. The other loss was to their nemesis Cumberland Valley on the road, 36-21, so they can be had. But they have skill, size and speed everywhere making them a handful. They ended the regular season beating Cenral Dauphin 31-10 then routed a decent Erie High team last week 48-12. Undefeated Delaware Valley is next for a game in Danville.

D11 AAA Final...Palisades 48 Lehighton 42

Sounds like it was a track meet at BASD between these undefeated teams. I would expect a lot of points next week between Egan and Palisades.

As expected, common sense doesn't prevail as the game will be at Northeast HS. Play it in Bucks Co for goodness sakes! Memo to D12, many of your schools are not located within Philly borders. To be fair, it would be just as dumb to play this game in Allentown or Bethlehem if D11 were hosting.

Parkland beats Freedom 30-6

Not a surprise. The Trojans dominated their way to their 6th straight D11 title. Jahan Worth ran for 150 yards, Ruisch threw for 180 and a score, and the defense suffocated Freedom and forced 4 turnovers.

Parkland will be competitive with SJP. The difference from this team and the one that went to state finals in 2015 is this years bunch doesn't have an FBS talent like Devante Cross, Kenny Yeboah, or Noel Brouse. They have a lot of really good players and a handful of FCS caliber kids, but i think the only way our schools are going to have a shot against the catholic league champ is when the roster has that plus one or two kids at a totally different talent level.

Coatesville-Pennsbury

It seems the general consensus on this game is Coatesville will win big. Am I correct in assuming that?

Personally, I think PSB can hang around. I thought their defense has played solid the past few weeks. They bend but don't break in that 2 high shell and try to keep everything in front of them. They have solid, aggressive LB play and are big in the lines, as always. I know CV is a different animal than Nesh and CBS, but I like PSB to keep it close. They need to run the ball consistently on O and play keep away. Their big OL needs to dominate CV. Play this game "in a phone booth," and you have a chance. Take the game to the 4th quarter and you may be a turnover away from an upset.

Burrs, who has been very accurate with his spreads and picks, has CV as 22.5 pt favorites and he is laying the points (ouch). This certainly has me second-guessing myself!
