My takeaway from this weekend...

I try to abstain from the private-public debate because it's pretty simple to figure out via PIAA rules and regulations. Complain to the folks in Harrisburg.

After these 6 championship games it's pretty obviously the quality of football is so much better out west in terms of competition. Every year the east is dominated by the same 3-4 teams, unfortunately none of them are in District 1. Out west and especially in the WPIAL, each season there is a plethora of teams who can reach Hershey. They were fantastic this weekend, hats of to our friends out west.

Penn State commit Keon Wylie reflects on high school career, talks college prep

Penn Trafford defeats Imhotep in the PIAA Class 5A title game

When the clock struck midnight on Keon Wylie’s career at Imhotep Charter on Friday, the high school senior maintained some good perspective.

Sign up for PennLive’s new high school sports newsletter here

The star defensive end, a Penn State commit, had just seen his Panthers fall in overtime to Penn-Trafford in the PIAA 5A state championship game at HersheyPark Arena, with the Warriors scoring late in regulation, kicking a field goal in extra time and stopping the Imhotep offense on a fourth and long.

But he was proud of his program, and proud of himself.

“I think I had a pretty okay career,” Wylie said. “It’s just unfortunate. I wanted to wrap it up with a state [championship]. But I guess if it was meant to be it would’ve happened. It wasn’t meant to be.”

“I know [Imhotep] will be here again.”

The game, in which Wylie had 5 tackles, meant the final time he’d suit up in the Imhotep black and red. But the future Nittany Lion will trade it in for the blue and white next fall.

“It’s just like [moving on] from Pop Warner,” Wylie said. “You eventually go to high school. Then you go to the next level. It was fun while it lasted. But now I gotta go, try to provide for my family at the next level, and get to the next level after that.”

Wylie finished this season with 9 sacks and 10 tackles for loss, and ended the year ranked a 4-star recruit, No. 17 at his position and No. 10 in the state of Pennsylvania.

Things have changed a little bit within the program since he committed. Former defensive coordinator Brent Pry, who was one of his lead recruiters, left the team to take the head coaching job at Virginia Tech.

Since speaking with Wylie on Friday night, Penn State has already tabbed Pry’s replacement—former Miami head coach Manny Diaz—but even before that, Wylie remained in the loop.

“We had a Zoom meeting, and they said they had a shortlist of people they wanted. But after that, there weren’t any real names. But I’m still in contact with them.”

Now with Diaz in the mix, Wylie hopes to make an immediate impact.

At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, he still has room to grow into his frame, which he plans on working on before he arrives to campus.
“I’m just gonna get my body right,” Wylie said. “Work on things I know I need to improve on. Get my weight up, so I won’t be too far behind, and just get the job done.”
“Hopefully come in, and don’t have to redshirt.”

Prep and Winning

This argument is getting old. Does the Prep have an advantage with who they recruit? Hell yes. My guess is that Prep sets lofty goals for their football team every year. Play great competition, win every game, win the league, district and state titles. I'm sure the parents and players all buy into the program and winning. I highly doubt any District One teams set those types of goals. If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me. If the expectations from the AD and the administration's are low, then the results will be exactly what you see in District One.

Q&A with Central Bucks East tight end Jack Donnelly

How has everything been going football wise as of late?
“It has been going pretty well, I just finished up my sophomore season in early November and I’ve been training for next season already.”

Going forward, what do you feel your team can continue to improve on?
“Our team will continue to work in the weight room and on the field this off season. By the time the season rolls around we will be ready to do what we do. Running the football with a surge from the Oline, tight ends, and fullbacks. We will be in our second year in our new defensive scheme so everyone will become used to it. Also emphasizing making plays to change the game on special teams.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“It was a good start to my varsity career this year. I became more and more confident throughout the year making plays as a sophomore. I had 16 receptions which was third best on our team. I had 2 touchdowns and a 2pt conversion. I played a bunch of different positions this year including tight end, fullback, receiver, outside linebacker, and punter. I received 2nd team all-league honors at punter with an average punt of 37.4 yards per punt. I’m looking forward to taking on a bigger role for the team next year. I don’t want to be satisfied with anything though. I’m going to continue to work hard this off-season to build for next season.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“Our team likes to run the ball and wear people down then utilize play action passes. We like to attack on defense with the 30 stack. We are returning 8 starters on both offense and defense so we are looking great for next season. Unfortunately we had an early exit in the playoffs a couple weeks ago.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“My goals for this offseason are to get bigger, faster, and stronger. My weight goal by August is the 215-225 range. Next season I want to achieve first team all-league at tight end.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I’m looking to play football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I competed at a bunch of prospect camps last summer and started to develop relationships will coaches across all levels.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“See above.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Last summer I went to Notre Dame, Northwestern, Rutgers, Temple, Monmouth, JMU, and Old Dominion.”

Do you have plans for game day trips?
“Earlier in the year I went to Maryland to watch them play vs Howard. Saturday November 20th, I went to Notre Dame to see them play Georgia Tech.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Notre Dame was my favorite team when I was growing up and still is.”

Q&A with Slippery Rock quarterback William Mokel

How has everything been going football wise as of late?
“I feel that everything football wise has been going great, our season just ended last Saturday, but I was happy with how far we made it and the friendships that I’ve built with that team.”

Going forward, what do you feel your team can continue to improve on?
“I feel that the main thing our new team is going to have to improve on is the mental part of football.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“There were two games this year where I didn’t play my best, but other than that I feel that my performances have been pretty good.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“I am pretty happy about the play of our team right now, I feel that we are very disciplined.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“My sporting goals going forward as of right now would have to be winning D-10 next year, since we lost it this year, and continuing to work hard on the field and in the weight room and try to make a run for states.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I am very determined to play college football.”

“I haven’t really had any colleges recruiting me yet, I’ve filled out a couple questionnaires, but as far as recruiting I haven’t had anyone yet.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“As I said I haven’t really had any colleges recruit me yet.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I have made a couple of college trips, but all that were close to home.”

Do you have plans for game day trips?
“As of right now I don’t have any plans for game day trips, but I did go to a couple during our season.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college team is Florida State.”

Q&A with Central Bucks East running back Ethan Shine

How has everything been going football wise as of late?
“Since losing our playoff game, I have started my personal offseason workouts. I have a couple of showcases I will be attending and I want to put on a good performance.”

Going forward, what do you feel your team can continue to improve on?
“As a running back I run between the tackles a lot and I have been working on my quickness and speed to take advantage of broken tackles I create. As a LB, I want to play even faster.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“I have, but there is much to improve on. This past season I played both sides of the ball and did well, but there were plays I missed on. I think I can be more effective with more work.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“We made a huge improvement from last season. We were 1-6 in 2020 due to injuries and young guys filling in. We made it to the playoffs this season, so our play was much better. I think if we keep working, we will continue improving our play and our record will reflect it.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“My focus is on being a better football player. I stopped playing soccer earlier in the year, so all my goals are centered around being a better leader and football player.”

“No one right now.”

Have you made any college trips yet?

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Alabama and Penn State.”

Central Valley vs Wyomissing

Should be a great game. Interestingly, both teams have defeated another state champ: CV beat 4A Aliquippa and Wyomissing beat 2A Southern Columbia. Went back to 2007 and only found four other examples of state champs with a win over another state champ (not surprisingly, 3 are Prep over Wood):

2019: Prep (6A) over Wood (5A)
2019: Southern Columbia (2A) over Wyoming (3A)
2016: Prep (6A) over Wood (5A)
2013: Prep (4A) over Wood (3A)
