Pennsbury at Downingtown West

Guys, give me some glimmer of hope for Pennsbury vs DTW. How would the planets have to align for the Falcons to have a shot? PHS can run the ball a little behind a big and mobile OL, but passing game and defense have been hot and cold. Have not seen DTW play but have seen the scores, so I know they are very good. One common opponent, Neshaminy: DTW 48-6, PHS 28-13. What can Pennsbury possibly do to hang around in this one?

Coatesville v DE

This game is interesting for a lot of reasons. Coatesville has shown itself to be the front runner of a tough Chesmont with great defensive play even though their offense may not be as good as last year’s squad.

DE has quietly and methodically kept itself in striking distance of a higher seed once again, even though it lost to DW a few weeks ago and has had a relatively easier schedule than DW and CASH.

A DE win would potentially push the arguably best team in District One to a 6-8 seed.

Who you got?

WPIAL 6A Rankings

Hope this can help the rest you guys understand whats going on out here in 6A.

1. North Allegheny: I really think they and PCC are 1a and 1b but I give NA the nod since they beat PCC. NA's special teams and offense are the strength of an overall very good NA team. They are exactly the same team they have been for the past several years. Solid up front with some good skill guys. Offensively, they revolve around getting the ball to Luke Collela (WR) and Percise Colon (RB). Collela is a Princeton commit and is an all around weapon for them catching the ball and on cross-buck/reverse type plays. Colon is very small, but surprisingly tough and also fast. Have to tackle him around the LOS or he could be gone. The rest of the skill guys are solid, but not spectacular. QB is better than years past and is also a run threat. (He killed P-R last year running QB ISO.) Even with the younger Lugg (Harvard commit), the OL is probably a notch down from years past. Still very good but not punishing. Special teams, particularly KOR are very good. Have opened several games with TDs. While they are undefeated, they have been in games until the 4th quarter (Lebo, Hempfield) before the game got out of hand.

2. PCC: PCC is all about their defensive line, which is large and athletic. The Donald kid is the real deal. A little light, but quick and athletic. The other kids are thick and fairly athletic - the Allen twins are MAC level kids and Beatty is going to UNC. Beatty looks to have gained weight and wasn't as nimble as the year before. LBs are very solid with Suneri leading the way as a 3 year starter. The secondary is probably the weakness of the defense. They are young back there and don't have anyone close to the Hamlin/Garner. When P-R had time, they were able to effectively throw the ball on them. Offensively, PCC runs the ball between the tackles and takes shots. No developed passing game to speak of. The Tillman kid at RB is smaller but very fast and shifty and seemed to solve his fumbling problems. QB is a caretaker who doesn't make mistakes and leads the team. WR look the part but the hyped up kids haven't played well - lots of drops. Best of them is a track kid - #19. Lots of kids play both ways which is interesting for PCC. As a side note, I think many people believe that this is PCC's last really good shot for a WPIAL in a while. JV and freshman teams are average. Time will tell.

3. P-R: I thought P-R's defense would be the weakness of the team, but they are a strength. Besides the PCC game where the offense gave them NO help, they are allowing under a TD a game with several shutouts. They fly around and have many looks to confuse the O. Also, I've not seen this at the HS level, but they definitely have substitution packages where different skill kids come on in long yardage situation. Coach K has them tuned up. Rechenberg at LB has been outstanding and a sophomore (Hasley) has stepped up and looks like he could be the best of the bunch. Tall, fast and tough. Up front, Jackson dominates and plays at a different level. Nobody been able to block him. The other DE Miller has had a sold year too. In the secondary, Boyd and Schweiger at S have played very well. Both can run and hit. On offense, the name of the game is getting the ball to the skill guys in space, who I think are the best in the WPIAL. Meckler and Jochem are the two fastest kids on the team and are a threat to take it to the house every play. Meckler isn't rushing the ball nearly has much but has probably 25 receptions and leads team in TD's. Jochem moves all around at WR and is long and fast. Every game I've been to he's had long TD's over or around people. Johnson is the other WR who is coming on. More of a possession kid, but 6'3" and 200#'s. QB, Spencer, is outstanding. I think he's better as a Junior than DiNucci and putting up passing numbers to rival Jurkovec as a junior (and that team was all about Jurkovec). He's only 5'10" though so not much college interest. The weakness of the O is the OL. Jackson goes both ways and is solid and Tackles are improving. Hayes is the best of the bunch. If they can get average to better Center play, they could make some more noise in the playoffs.

4. Lebo: Just saw them last week. They are solid in all phases, but as I said in another post, a long way away from being competitive with the top 3. Their best players are Evan Jones and Mason Ventrone and a big OL/DL. Lots of hype for those kids, but really were non-existent from what I saw. On the plus side for Lebo is that they play a lot of young players in the secondary and will have to build from that. QB is only a sophomore, so some potential. But complete rebuild on OL and DL/LB. Possibly take a step back before improving.

5. Seneca Valley: P-R plays them this week so I will know more after that, but I think they are a pretty typical SV team, just not as athletic as usual. Best player is a LB with Ivy offers and an OL going to Purdue. They have a 3 year starter at QB but still struggle to score. I don't think they have much in the way of speed and QB is more of a big runner than dual threat. Its sort of amazing they aren't better in that they are about double to the size of these other schools.

6. Canon-MacMillan: They rank lower than this in talent IMO but a nice QB and very good coaching is going to get them in the playoffs. Not really much to say except they play hard and don't quit.

7. Hempfield: Seems like every year is supposed to be there year to break out. This year they had a huge OL and DL and returned 9 or 10 starters on both side of the ball. But nothing. Haven't beaten anyone and seem destined to stay where they are. They do try and do some modern things on O and D and hung with PCC for a while, but they can't get over the hump.

8. Norwin: D1 QB and 1 win over a 6A team? Not sure what's going on there. They have some work to do,

9. Butler: Their varsity is awful, but believe it or not, I think they are better than they have been. Have heard the freshman team is very good so if those kids keep playing, look for Butler to compete for the final playoff spot in a few years.

Q&A with Reynolds running back Cole Toy

How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“This season is going great. We are really jelling together as a team and we're grinding it out.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“I feel that we most need to improve on coming out of the gates firing and not wait till the second quarter to come alive.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“What we have been focusing on mainly this year is doing the little things right and taking it game by game every week.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
“Our goal is to win a D-10 championship and go as far as we can into the postseason.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I would love to play sports in college, and it would be either wrestling or football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I haven’t really been recruited by any schools yet besides a few letters here and there.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I've always loved watching Penn State play growing up.”

Q&A with Peters Township running back Vinny Sirianni

How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“So far this season has been great. It has been the best start to Peters Football in quite some time. I have gotten many opportunities on both sides of the ball to make plays and help my team get a victory.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
”I think we just need to play our game. The coaches prepare us well throughout the week with who we are playing on schemes and personnel. We can improve on scoring consistently on offense and giving our defensive players more rest to provide shutouts. Fatigue is always a factor.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“Playing lights out defense and making big plays on special teams. Coach always talks about hidden yardage with special teams. Scoring on punts or kick returns is huge, and I don’t feel like many people pay attention to that. Lastly, just to keep everyone healthy and fresh if we want to make a run in November/December.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
“Whenever I’m given to opportunity to just keep making plays on offense and defense. Goals would be to get an interception on defense and to keep pounding the ball on offense and scoring more touchdowns.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Football if anything. Yes, I have definitely taken it into consideration. It just depends on what my options are.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“None at the moment.”

Do you have plans for game day trips this fall?
“No.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My uncle would always take me to the Pitt games. I had a Dion Lewis jersey because he was my favorite player and even use him on Madden on the PlayStation right now.”

Q&A with Bishop McDevitt safety Mario Easterly

How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“The season is going along well, but we need to clean up some stuff so that we will be ready for the playoffs.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“As a team, we need to limit the amount of penalties and play as a team not individuals.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“Keys for success would be to have good weeks of practice and execute on Friday nights.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
“Goals for the rest of the season are to win another district championship and a state championship.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“My goal in college would be to play football and baseball.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“West Virginia, Syracuse, and William and Mary.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No official visits, just a few college camps.”

Do you have plans for game day trips this fall?
“Nothing is official yet, but I definitely will be looking forward to going to some games.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up, my favorite college was Florida State.”

Q&A with DuBois Area quarterback Alex Kovalyak

How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“This season has not gone the way that DuBois had envisioned. Specifically for me, having a season ending injury is extremely disheartening. This group of seniors we have are the most determined and mature young men I have ever been around and focus every week on getting better no matter what.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“Being able to stick to fundamentals and focusing on each person’s job.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“Being able to relax, have fun, and just play football.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?
“Be the best player/coach I can be. Whether I’m on the field or not, I want to make a difference on Friday nights. That can be anything from coaching up the young guys to being there to support everyone like always.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Grove City, Thiel, and Lawrence University.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“All are very active in recruiting.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes.”

Do you have plans for game day trips this fall?
“Yes.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Penn State.”

Lehigh Valley Week 10

Fun slate of games in the final week

Nazareth hosts Easton and can clinch an EPC championship with a win. Would be their first conference title since 2011 and only their second league title this century. They’re led by Maine commit at quarterback Anthony Harris who is in the mix for EPC player of the year. It would also be a sweet win for Scott Byrd, Nazareth’s offensive line coach, who spent 30 years at Easton and is the best in the Valley at his job.

Bethlehem Catholic and Allentown Central Catholic meet up in the Holy War, and while Becahi is a solid favorite, ACC has played really well lately, with a big win over Emmaus and taking Freedom to the wire.

Freedom and Liberty tangle in the Christmas City Classic, with the Patriots heavy favorites, though Liberty always gets up for this one.

Northampton can clinch an EPC North title, their first league championship since sharing the 1997 MVC title. They host winless Whitehall in the Concrete Bowl.

Parkland and Emmaus meet in the battle of Cedar Crest Boulevard. Emmaus upset Bethlehem Catholic with Brandon Camire going crazy. He can go over 1,700 yards tonight, though Parkland is fully healthy and embarrassed Easton last week. This should be the most physical game of the night.

In small schools, Pen Argyl and Bangor meet for the 100th time in one of the great underrated rivalries in the area. Salisbury and Southern Lehigh should also be a fun one, where the Falcons can clinch a 3A playoff berth, but will have to contain the Spartan ground game.
