#14 Pennridge vs. #8 Hempfield

Hempfield ranked wrestlers: #7 Ethan Lebin (127), #7 Eli Carr (139), #6 Lucas Kapusta (145), #23 Elijah Binakonsky (215), #14 Caleb Mussmon (285)

Pennridge ranked wrestlers: #10 Colby Martinelli (107), #9 Cole Coffin (114), #19 Sam Kuhns (139), #16 Talan Hogan (172)

This will probably be the most balanced dual on paper, where there aren’t a ton of stars (though Lebin was a surprise state finalist last year) but lost of solid, but unheralded kids on both sides. Hempfield comes out of a much tougher part of the state, and I think their kids will be a little more battle tested.

#10 Central Mountain vs. #15 Cumberland Valley

Central Mountain ranked wrestlers: #1 Luke Simcox (133), #3 Dalton Perry (139), #7 Griffin Walizer (145), #12 Rocco Serifini (189), #20 Brayden Blackwell (285)

Cumberland Valley ranked wrestlers: #15 Phil Montes (107), #24 Alex Tennis (127), #11 Jacob Mitchell (133), #15 Gabe Belga (152), #11 Anthony Bruscino (189)

Central Mountain has stars (Simcox is a favorite to win a state title, Perry is a returning state champ and Penn State commit), but not quite the lineup depth of Cumberland Valley, who always puts an excellent product on the mat. Central Mountain needs to get bonus points in bunches in the spots where they can.

#24 Shikellamy vs. #5 Waynesburg

Shikellamy ranked wrestlers: #20 Alex Reed (114), #15 Isaac McGregor (133), #19 Connor Wetzel (160), #16 Mason Rebuck (215),

Waynesburg ranked wrestlers: #14 Ky Szewczyk (114), #6 Joe Simon (133), #1 Mac Church (145), #19 Nate Jones (152), #1 Rocco Welsh (172), #8 Brody Evans (189), #4 Eli Makel (215)

Speaking of stars, Waynesburg has them in droves, with Church and Welsh having a combined 3 state titles and 5 state finals between the two of them, and both ranked in the top 3 in the country at their weight class. Simon and Makel are also state finalist caliber kids in wide open weight classes. They’re not as deep as the team that won state duals and the individual tournament in 2021, but they’re good enough to advance without a problem here. This is what they’d call a helmt match up in college football – two of the most storied programs in state history and it’s always fun to see them battle. Shikellamy was the baddest kid on the block for a long time in the 1980s and I always enjoy when they’re in Hershey.

#1 Bethlehem Catholic vs. #16 Council Rock South

Bethlehem Catholic ranked wrestlers: #1 Keanu Dillard (107), #1 Nate Desmond (114), #20 Ryder Campbell (121), #18 Shane McFillin (127), #2 Cael McIntyre (133), #1 Kollin Rath (139), #14 Charlie Scanlan (145), #5 Jake Dailey (152), #6 Andrew Harmon (160), #4 Luke Thomas (172), #15 Landon Muth (189), #12 Elijah Thompson (285)

Council Rock South ranked wrestlers: #8 Connor Lenahan (107), #13 Luke Reitter (114), #25 Gavin Cole (152), #7 Bekhruz Sadriddinov (160)

As you can see, Bethlehem Catholic has ranked wrestlers in 12 of 13 weight classes, three projected state champs, seven projected medalists, and three kids ranked in the top 5 nationally. They’re going to win the tournament. Council Rock South, however, does have Sadriddinov, who should have an excellent match up with Andrew Harmon.

In Friday’s semis, give me Central Mountain over Hempfield and Bethlehem Catholic over Waynesburg, then I’d bet a lot of my net worth on Bethlehem Catholic coming out of the top half.

#3 Central Dauphin vs. LaSalle

Central Dauphin ranked wrestlers: #11 Thunder Beard (107), #24 Luke Hitchcock (114), #8 Liam Flanagan (127), #3 Matt Repos (145), #16 Michael Beard (152), #4 Ryan Garvick (160)

LaSalle ranked wrestlers: None

As usual, the opening round match for the District 12 winner will be a blood bath. Central Dauphin has excellent top end guys – Repos is a Lehigh recruit and will be a four-time state medalist this year, and Garvick is a returning state finalist – while LaSalle just doesn’t have the firepower to compete at this level.

#19 Delaware Valley vs. #2 Nazareth

Delaware Valley ranked wrestlers: #18 Landon Machado (114), #3 Zac Jacaruso (121), #21 Dominic Moyer (133), #17 CJ Walton (172), #11 Aiden Black (285)

Nazareth ranked wrestlers: #23 Remy Trach (107), #2 Tahir Parkins (121), #10 Charlie Bunting (127), #24 Jack Campbell (133), #6 Jake Doone (139), #3 Dom Wheatley (172), #1 Sonny Sasso (189), #12 Noah Okamoto (215), #1 Sean Kinney (285)

Nazareth will win handily and certainly looks much healthier and improved with close to their full lineup wrestling last weekend and guys dropped in weight. The big draw here is Zac Jacaruso and Tahir Parkins, which was a regional final last year and very easily could be a regional/state final this year in a loaded and wide open 121. Jacaruso is the returning state champion, while Parkins shockingly went 0-2 after spending much of the year nationally ranked. Parkins beat Jacaruso back in December, as part of a 59-3 dual win by Nazareth. This score should be similar. The Blue Eagles “only” have nine of their thirteen wrestlers ranked, compared to the twelve from Bethlehem Catholic, but this is a national caliber team that should be in the state final.

Erie Cathedral Prep vs. #25 Spring-Ford

ECP ranked wrestlers: none

Spring-Ford ranked wrestlers: #8 Cole Smith

Probably the softest match up in the field, Erie Catheral Prep is in a rebuilding phase after a really solid set of classes came through. Spring-Ford also is rebuilding after graduating the best two classes in school history, including their first state champ. Still nice work getting back to Hershey.

#4 Canon-McMilan vs. #11 Chambersburg

Canon Mac ranked wrestlers: #3 Tanner Mizenko (107), #10 Brandon Dami (114), #5 Andrew Binni (127), #2 Matt Furman (172), #13 Gabriel Stafford (189), #19 Geno Calgaro (215)

Chambersburg ranked wrestlers: #25 Zach Sherman (114), #11 Luke Mentzer (127), #9 Aiden Hight (189), #9 Zach Evans (215), #16 Avery Kuhns (285)

Canon Mac, another blue-blood, has one of their best teams since winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. They’ve got really nice 107 through heavyweight depth, plus Mizenko and Furman are state finalist type guys they can get dependable bonus points out of. Chambersburg is similarly well balanced through the lineup, but just has a little less at the top end.

In Friday’s semis, give me Canon Mac over Spring-Ford and Nazareth over Central Dauphin.

Classic pre-determine bracket. I also was overly dismissive of that match up on the other thread - after looking at it earlier today I have it 8-5 Faith Christian, giving two toss ups to FC and one to ND. Notre Dame has falls coming at heavyweight at 114, and I think if they can weigh Smith in at 107, having him wrestle Davidheiser and Berkenstock take the forfeit or fall at 114 is their path to victory. Should be a great duall

Particularly excited for a Waters-Garcia match up. Two national caliber kids, Waters won the first, and they should hit three more times, including state finals.

Years where the PIAA Duals “championship” happened before the actual finals thanks to bracket mechanics:
2000: Northampton 31 Easton 18 (D11 finals)
2003: Easton 34 Northampton 21 (D11 finals)
2004: Easton 31 Northamtpon 29 (D11 Finals)
2006: Upper Perkiomen 27 Nazareth 26 (Semis)
2009: Central Dauphin 31 Northampton 29 (Semis)
2010: Central Dauphin 35 Central Mountain 34 (Semis)
2012: Canon Mac 28 Central Dauphin 25 (semis)
2015: Franklin Regional 30 Becahi 25 (Semis)
2016: Becahi 33 Belle Vernon 30 (semis)
2018: Becahi 33 Erie Cathedral Prep 26

Actually, looking at this list, it way less often that we get the actual two best teams in finals. And this list doesn’t count Northampton boycotting the first state finals and sending their JV team or Becahi not participating with their full lineup in 2021 during the COVID season.

So Pennridge loses 34-32, but had a kid DQ'd at 107 because of an illegal slam, when he was leading 12-8 late in the 3rd. Obviously, that was huge.

Hey, at least South won one match. Better than they did against FCA.

For Nazareth fans, that dual was tragic!! All they needed to do was not get majored in the last match - and Chris Sheetz was only up 6 in the final seconds. Andrew Flegler literally could have taken off running into the stands to put Nazareth in state finals, but he engaged with Sheetz and Sheetz head locked him with three seconds left to go up 13-5 and get the extra team point to win.

Upper Perk then thumped Easton in the final - who lost to Nazareth in the D11 final, which placed them on the other half of the bracket. I always think Easton’s seven straight finals comes with a little bit of an asterisk because they were clearly the third best team in 2006.

Zack Kemmerer, the two-time state champ on that Upper Perk team, had one of the best seasons ever that year, winning Ironman, Reno, and Beast of the East, plus a PA state title. He went on to be a 2x all American at Penn. I did always think it was kind of funny that Upper Perk was the headlock school, despite most kids that depend on headlocks fizzling out in junior high. But they were nasty with it, and had it in their back pocket whenever it came up.

I need to go back and watch the Martinelli match - he’s a top 8ish kid in the state, FB at obviously swings the dual.

For CRS, Lenehan did a nice job against Dillard, 6-1 is way closer than I thought it’d be agains the #1 kid in the country. On the flip side, Harmon took it to Behkruz in a match I thought would be much closer.

Bad break for Pennridge. Does anyone keep stats for most team pins in a season? During Upper Perks peak they had a ton .

I assumed that was his son on the team so makes sense to me. Tom and I had some battles back in the day

I don’t know if those stats existing - Easton used to have team takedown records in the room, but nothing that was publicly shared. But I’d bet on late 90s to mid 00s Upper Perk or the Don Rohn Northampton teams being the best pinning groups. Upper Perk stuck a million kids with headlocks, and Northampton literally had the cement series named after them for making the front headlock/underhook throws nationally famous - though it’s a Nazareth guy (Rob Rohn) who hit the most famous Konkrete Special in an NCAA final.

Yeah, Ben Clymer is the head coach (he’s a Northwestern Lehigh guy, I think three Clymer brothers have state titles up there), but I think Hontz is one of the big guys in building the team - his local connections are through the roof, and I think he was running his sons club, where a lot of the kids are coming from.

I think Smith had the best headlock on UP. He hit it from everywhere
He held their pin record forever - maybe the state one too? Chris Sheetz was the other one that stuck out - he ripped one on Nikko Triggas (3x state champ in California and at the time #1 kid in the country) in the Reno finals in ‘05 that shook the walls of the gym. I always gave Sheetz a little bit of the mental edge because he was the first of the Hontz guys to win a state title.

It was always kind of a knock on the Upper Perk guys at the next level. Derek Zinck and Zack Kemmerer were their two guys who were way more well rounded, and in a related story had awesome careers at Lehigh and Penn.

Ryan Kemmerer probably would have won states as a senior. Do you remember what happened to him? Did he transfer or something? Not to judge, but I think I heard there was problems at home.

He transferred a bunch - I think he was three schools in four years, finishing at Boyertown. Didn’t wrestle postseason as a senior - I don’t remember why, might have missed weight at districts? Pa-wrestling has his last matches from that year at state duals. He got pinned by Andrew Alton that year, who won 140, so maybe more of a finalist? But he was really talented.

The three ones like that I remember the specifics of kids doing something bizarre to blow guaranteed state titles are Garrett Scott getting suspended from school for looking at porn on a district computer, costing him a shot at four state titles, Mike Evans pooping in a kid’s lacrosse glove as a prank and getting suspended during districts and missing the state tournament when he was a top 5 kid nationally at 171 and everybody moved down to 160 to avoid him, and a random kid walked to a state title, and Steve Spearman missing weight when he was defending his state title by something like 15 pounds.

Back to state duals -

In the potential best bout of the first night…Zac Jacaruso didn’t weigh in for Delaware Valley, and Tahir Parkins didn’t make 123, so even had Jacaruso been there, Parkins couldn’t have wrestled him. Nazareth chooses not to use Parkins since they now have state bronze medalist Charlie Bunting down at 127. Will make for an interesting postseason.

I remember G. Scott. He was unbelievable.
He’s one of the five most talented kids I’ve ever seen. He was a top 10 kid as a redshirt freshman at Penn State despite barely going to practice and keeping god knows what kind of hours on that campus, and beat out a returning All American for a lineup spot at Big Tens and NCAAs. Obviously and tragically he didn’t hold it together, but he was a special wrestler.

That’s also such a bygone era of Penn State wrestling, when it felt like a big chunk of the team were character risks, lots of really talented guys in and out of the program, and they always seemed to underachieve come the post season. This current era has been different to say the least.

Quarterfinals for tomorrow
#8 Hempfield vs #10 Central Mountain
#1 Bethlehem Catholic vs #5 Waynesburg

#3 Central Dauphin vs #2 Nazareth
#25 Spring-Ford vs #4 Canon McMillan

Being from SW PA and wrestling back in the 1980's there were some stud teams in that Greene, Fayette, Washington county area. Some of the Names/teams from that era were something to behold. And a lot of the same teams are rolling still. Glad to see PA still being the leader in the sport.

My pics are
Hempfield
BECCHI even though I have some connection to the Big red W of Waynesburg
Nazareth
The Big Macs of Cannon Mac

Holy shit - Becahi’s Kollin Rath (#1 in the state, #6 nationally at 139) bumps up to 145 wrestle 2x state champ and #3 in the country at 145 Mac Church from Waynesburg and beats him 4-3. Church beat Rath 3-1 last year in the state semis at 132.

To tie it back to football, Rath’s dad is Erik Rath, who was the 1A player of the year and took Pius X (Roseto) to the state final in football in like 2000 or 2001

Why not? Beca is the SJP of PA wrestling.

Yes, the similarities are striking. I actually bet they have a wider geographic reach than SJP. I do still kind of find it wild - Becahi was terrible for a very long time. Then in like a two year period, they turned into one of the best teams in the country, and haven’t stopped for a decade. I remember when Moss Grays took the Becahi job, there was lots of laughing at why he would go to such a dead end job, but Steve Powell wisely said if Becahi could get it together and just get all the Valley kids, nobody could beat them. Moss is not the guy who ultimately did that, but it’s exactly what happened.

Rath is one of the kids that came up in their club system - I think he’s going to be one of their best in this run when it’s all said and done.

First big result of the 3A semi round - Dominic Wheatley (Nazareth) beat Matt Furman (Canon Mac) 4-2 in overtime. Wheatley was 3 in the state and Furman was 2 at 172. Definitely think we’ll see a rematch in state semis, but a great bout, with Wheatley riding out the entire 3rd period of a tied match, then getting a TD in a scramble in OT.

Another big result - at 133 state #1 Luke Simcox (Central Mountain) gets solidly beat by #2 Cael McIntyre (Becahi) 5-2. McIntyre, of course, is the son of longtime Easton running backs coach Joe McIntyre, who is also one of the best wrestling officials in the state.

Rath and returning state champ Dalton Perry on the mat now at 138.

Rath just rode the piss out of Perry in the second period. Perry cuts Rath to start the 3rd, 1-0 Rath. Perry can’t score in the third, Rath wins 1-0. That’s two straight wins over state champions for the Becahi sophomore. Hawks up 41-3 on Central Mountain.

Bethlehem Catholic beats Central Mountain 53-3 to advance to another state final.

They’ll get a rematch with Nazareth, who beat Canon Mac 34-20.

This will be the third meeting between the two schools in the state final, with Nazareth winning in 2017 and Becahi winning last year. There has not been a rematch in the 3A final since Easton and Connellsville split wins in 2004 and 2005.

This is the fifth all D11 final, joining Nazareth-Easton in 2007, Nazareth-Becahi in 2017, Northampton-Becahi in 2019, and Nazareth-Becahi in 2022. The only match where the result flipped from the D11 finals was Nazareth reversing the outcome on Easton in 2007. D3 had an all District final with Central Dauphin and Cumberland Valley in 2009, and D7 had one in 2014 with Franklin Regional and Greater Latrobe. This is the 18th time there has been at least one D11 team in the final since the tournament started in 1999, and the D11 champ sent the JV teams to the 1999 and 2021 tournaments.

Since moving up from 2A in 2015, this is Becahi’s sixth state final, with wins in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2022. The Hawks made their first 2A final in 2011, winning four straight from 2011-2014. This is Nazareth’s fifth state final, with wins in 2007, 2017, and 2020 and a runner up finish last year.

I have always been enamered by D11 wrestling. Sure, we've had plenty of individual state champs from D1, but the difference is remarkable. Hopefully some of the Rappo brothers are ready send their next generation to CRS.

The sociological study of why D11 wrestling is really good I find interesting. It’s no accident that Council Rock South has been so successful with Nazareth state champ Brad Silimperi running them for so long. CRS and Apex are set up and run like a D11 program.

Didn’t post because there wasn’t much drama - Bethlehem Catholic is your 3A team champion after a 35-23 win over Nazareth. Not a lot of wild individual bouts to recap, biggest surprise was Becahi sophomore Charlie Scanlan majoring returning state medalists Jake Doone at 145.

This is Bethlehem Catholic’s ninth state title since 2011, and fifth since moving up from 2A in 2015. They’re currently ranked 8th nationally by MatScouts (formerly Intermat for the internet savvy wrestling folks on here).

More impressively, Becahi’s lineup features a freshman and five sophomores - including all three of their nationally ranked wrestlers, so this is a team built to keep it rolling.

Since I’m a jerk, here is their lineup by wher they’re from:
106 - Freedom
114 - Nazareth
121 - Palisades
127 - Northampton
133 - Easton
139 - Pleasant Valley
145 - Freedom
152 - Wyoming Valley West
160 - Emmaus
172 - Whitehall
189 - Northampton
215 - Pottsville
285 - Easton

Two kids from Easton? Why would a kid from a school district (WVW) 70+ miles away, go to Becahi.

Cael McIntyre is the 133. His dad was the running backs coach for a long time at Easton, his sister was an All State field hockey player. His dad was one of the figures named in the racial discrimination lawsuit that Jamarr Billman (the former wrestling coach) filed and won against the school district. Cael pulled out of Easton schools when he got disciplined for skipping a tournament the junior high team was in to go to a different tournament with his club team (run by coaches from Becahi). It all got pretty ugly.

The heavyweight is a football player they turned into a wrestler, I’m not sure he’d wrestled before high school. Part of the reason Billman isn’t the Easton coach anymore is the number of kids who transferred out. They kept their 107 this year, and it’s my understanding that they’re keeping a set of brothers in middle school now who have been connected with Becahi for a long time. The Nazareth pipeline is not as deep as the group that is graduating out, and Easton looks like they might get it back together to be the second school in the mix in the next few years.

The Nazareth kid at 114 is a state champ, but his uncles run Becahi’s club program (the Ciasulli’s, who all wrestled at Easton) he was never not going to Becahi.

The crazy one to me is Muth, the 189 pounder. He actually weighs in the 160s, but Becahi is so deep he’s up two weight classes despite being a Division I wrestler (VMI). He’s kind of battled for a lineup spot his whole career. Had he just stayed at Northampton, he would have wrestled almost the exact same schedule, and likely been a four year starter, with other Division I kids in the room to train with. Becahi is obviously better than Northampton, but it’s kind of on the margins when you get down to it. Same thing with McFillin - he very well could have been a state finalist last year at 106, but he was stuck behind Desmond and didn’t wrestle varsity. Northampton is another one that has a wave of talent, though one of their best kids have already left for Faith Christian.

And as for kids coming from Wyoming Valley West, Becahi always has a kid or two from way out. Ryan Anderson was from Hackettstown, NJ, Stephen Maloney was from Fleetwood, near Reading, Tyler Kasak was from Doylestown. As long as they pay tuition, they can go to the school.
