Obviously, a good opening win for the Bucks coming off the crushing loss of their senior QB / FS. Have been waiting for a box score to be posted but nothing online yet, so only have some minimal stats from an alumni Facebook page. The things that stood out to me from the game:
1. West ran for 348 yards to 49(!) for GV. Bucks dominant up front on both sides of the ball. GV looked pretty big up front and ran a ton of subs in constantly. Lots of helmet tapping, they were gassed on a warm night where West controlled the ball for most of the game. I'm going to guess that West doubled GV's time of possession. OLB Matt Cleland and DE Jack Williams were as good as advertised. It really flipped the script on how to beat GV, it's not usually a good idea to try to beat them at their own game.
2. West played a lot of different guys in the secondary and were missing the two projected starting safeties in Ganz Cooper and Cooper Taylor (who played his first varsity game at QB) Had some breakdowns, but got 4 picks, 3 of them off of errant throws from hits of the QB, and one from a great break on the ball by McFadden.
3. Cooper Taylor scored on a 62 yard Q sweep on the first play from scrimmage, finishing with 178 yards on the ground. It's good when your backup can also run the ball like Ganz would have this year. HB Ryan Clemens added 111 yards and ran through the first tackler or two on every play. He's going to be a problem for teams this year.
4. It's hard to tell where GV is right now. If the QB is indeed seriously injured, and he was moved there for lack of another option, that's a big problem going forward. As I said they were big up front but the combination of West keeping their O on the field and pounding the ball at them all night... they just didn't seem to be the classic GV team. Only time will tell if that was because of West's play, GV being down, or a combination of the two.
