Wilson 6A vs Governor Mifflin 5A
This is a major game with wide implications for the 6A and 5A playoff picture with so few games played this year and a reduced playoff field….if they even get to a postseason. District 3 will have 4 teams in 3A, 4A, 5A and 6A while 1A and 2A have 2, meaning A and AA enter at the final!
So the Wilson-Mifflin game is HUGE. Both are postseason contenders with Mifflin in the mix with heavily favored Warwick. You could make a good argument that Wilson and Central Dauphin are in a dead heat as favorite with each returning their core skill players. Here’s a few quick thoughts on today’s game.
Wilson has under rated talent at quarterback in Kaleb Brown (6-1, 180), running back Jadyn Jones (6-1, 215) and super quick Mason Lenart (5-9, 165). Troy Corsin (5-10, 175) is also a returning starter and veteran receiver. Brown has a big, big arm, throwing easily 60 yards in scrimmage but may be more of a threat for his under rated speed and shiftiness. Bulked up since last year. Jones is likewise shifty and fast especially at 215 for a great combination of speed and power. Jeff Colacin (5-10, 235) heads a defense returning 7. See the District 3 Top 10 below for more on both teams.
Governor Mifflin returns about everyone (7) on offense except quarterback Kolbie Reeser (840, 46%). Otherwise they are loaded with two Division-1, Power 5 players in running back Nicholas Singleton (+30 offers….from everyone) and TE/DE Cameron Stewart (6-5, 245, Rutgers). Big time players! FB/LB Brandon Strausser (6-0, 215, 430 yards) is a hard tackle and a brute on defense with 87 stops last year. 11 return to the defense. They were a young group in 2019 that should improve on their 8-4 mark.
Bottom line:
These two are long and bitter rivals, with Wilson in West Lawn on Reading’s west side and Mifflin 3 miles south on the south side in Shillington. Last year’s anomaly had Wilson trouncing the youthful Mustangs 61-14 in Shillington. This year’s game is at Wilson where their seasoned skill should have the edge although they are breaking in a new line with all starters graduated. Mifflin is breaking in a new quarterback in Connor Maryniak (5-10, 165, sr) to run their option attack but have a once in a decade talent at running back. With both having explosive players who knows. But it should be more than last year’s fiasco with Mifflin a year older and the Bulldogs getting the new line settled in.
