42-7 over CBE. The coach has had a great career. I will say somewhere over the past 18 years NP should have won a 2nd state title.

Great accomplishment but only having one state title says s he can’t win when it counts The most. I think with all the talented teams he has had over the years he underachieves in the playoffs.

How many current coaches have a state title?

lots of league and district titles for coach Beck; very few coaches have either.

I’ve watched them for years, I’d say they overachieved many years given the talent.

Times change, and they have done a great job changing to compete.

Coaches with multiple big school titles:

Mike Pettine
Jim Render
George Smith
Art Walker
Terry Totten
Gabe Infante

That’s it, thats the list. I’m not sure how much of an indictment to his career it is that he’s not on it. Render, Smith, and Pettine are all of another generation, if you want to say he’s not as good as Walker or Infante that’s fine. I’d probably challenge you on Totten. But in that generation of coaches (those guys, Beck, Schmidt, McNamee, Gordon, Moncman, Ortega, Shiffert, Melosky, Rimpfel, Dahms, I’m sure there are others I’m missing at the 4A/6A level) Beck is right in that conversation. He might not be #1, but it’s not like he’s unworthy of being on the list.

People always point to him not winning more titles. Which is the team under achieved with? Probably should have won in the snow in 2011? Beat the Liberty team with their four NFL guys in 2008? Beaten LaSalle and North Allegheny in 2010? Beaten SJP and their slew of NFL guys in 2015? I get that it’s kind of wild North Penn hasn’t won another title. But they’ve never had a heavy favorite other than 2003. they’re always deep, but the top end talent hasn’t been overwhelming. He’s not George Curry, but I think he gets way more shit than he deserves.

Actively, I think only Walker, Moncman, McNamee, Melosky, Roken, Totten, Kasperowicz, and Beck have state titles in 6A. Only a Walker has multiple - and people on this board are very happy to fire him at North Allegheny.

SOL - Good point on the state championship, not many coaches have one.

I disagree on the overachieved statement. Look back at the all-conference teams from the SOL and see how his teams dominated the list, more talent than the other schools for sure! He has had studs every year but a couple. Has had great high school players, big numbers and depth that other schools do not get based on size too.

League titles yes I think 15(great). Every year but I think two of his years and one shared conference title, Now add this year.

District titles not bad but I would say he has 3 And is that phenomenal? Not sure that is with all the all-conference talent.

i would like to know his playoff record? I thought some really good teams got early exits over the years in the playoffs.

Way more than three district titles.
2002
2003
2005
2008
2010
2011
2016

They obviously won the whole thing in 2003. Lost to the champ in 2002, 2008, 2011, and 2016.

District 1 runner up in:
2004
2009
2013
2015
2018

So he’s won 7 a District 1 titles and gone to the finals 12 times in 18 years.

The “ugly” playoff mark is he’s 2-5in Eastern Finals. He’s beaten Steve Shiffert and Brett Gordon, and lost to Gordon, Tim Moncman twice, Rob Melosky, and Gabe Infante.

Since he started at North Penn in 2002, here are other eastern finals record for people who have been there multiple times.
Gabe Infante: 6-0
Tim Moncman: 3-0
Jim Morgans: 2-0
Brett Gordon: 2-2
Dick Beck: 2-5
Matt Ortega: 1-2
Mark Schmidt: 1-1
Steve Shiffert: 0-2
Galen Snyder: 0-2

From the West
Art Walker: 4-1
Terry Totten : 4-1
Eric Kasperowicz: 2-1
Al Wolski: 1-2
Jeff Weachter: 0-2
Doug Dahms: 0-4
Tim Rimpfel: 0-3
Glen McNamee: 2-0

Congrats to Coach Beck. That’s an amazing accomplishment. I have tremendous respect for any coach that can keep a boundary school program at the top of their conference for almost 20 years. I understand North Penn has plenty of advantages, but before Jr and Beck got there, they chronically underachieved. Congrats to Coach Beck and best of luck moving forward.
