Express Times is running an interesting multi-part series on the rise of Notre Dame Green-Pond wrestling. Here’s today’s installment - how the Crusaders have their sights set on being a national power, and how they can tap into parts of western Jersey that don’t have private school options to attract elite wrestlers:

ND has never been relevant in wrestling (or really anything other then boys basketball). They had one champion and three finalists in school history. But they hired former Becahi assistant Matt Veres last year, got enrollments from five junior high state medalists who wrestled for Veres’s club (including the #1 freshman in the country) and the transfer of a state 3rd place finisher from Nazareth. They finished 3rd at states, with two state champs, and have another huge class coming in and at least one big time transfer, a NJ state champion. It’s as “instant oats” a state title contender as I can remember. Going to be very interesting to see how it develops over the next few years.
