1 State College 6A 2-0
State High holds on to the top spot after an impressive road win in New Jersey defeating St. Augustine in a tight one, 19-7. This was the 1st game of a 1 year home and home agreement. SC took a 13-7 half time lead when Qb Tommy Friberg and Cohen Russell connected on 77 and 74 yard Td strikes. The road win followed a 4 ½ hour bus ride that wasn’t decided until Isaiah Edwards 75 yard run with 50 seconds left in the game. It was a nice early season test for both the Hermits and Lions. Next up is a trip to #20 Hollidaysburg (2-0) who they defeated last year 55-27. SC is coming off the St. Augustine game and with Hollidaysburg in their home opener it could get exciting. The Tigers have some big people to go at State High but lack their speed and quality depth.

2 Manheim Central 5A 2-0
Manheim Central went on the road for the second consecutive week for another convincing win, this time against Hempfield in Landisville 28-7. Hempfield’s strong suit is their defense but without any offense the Barons kept pounding behind their veteran line gaining 172 on the ground as Tyler Flick got 128 yards and 3 Tds. Qb Evan Simon was 8 for 10 for 142 yards. They’re home this week against their bitter rival from nearby Lititz, the Warwick Warriors. It might be a 15 minute ride counting the time it takes to get on the bus so the place will be packed with Warrior fans. This will be the 2nd of 3 consecutive games against LL-Section One teams for MC with Wilson to follow next week. Warwick has some D1 players, a veteran offense and a sizeable OL to keep it interesting.

3 Bishop McDevitt 4A 2-0
Back in the day this game was the battle of the Big Burg verses the Little Burg. No secret who the big burg is but still, you got to hand it to Gettysburg for hanging in there against McDevitt closing to 34-28 at the end of the 3rd quarter in Harrisburg. Zach Ketterman lite em up, throwing for 279 yards, completing 19 of 28 passes. But they shut down Gburg’s stellar back Ammon Robinson and that was the difference, holding the Warriors to 81 yards rushing in a 48-35 non-conf win. Chase Diehl completed 14 of 24 for 359 yards with 5 touchdown tosses while T’nyis Becker had 17 carries for 136 yards as they dominated on the ground with 255 yards. They’re at Middletown this week for one of the biggest inter-divisional Mid Penn games in years. McDevitt’s played a tougher schedule swamping Cumberland Valley and Gettysburg by a average score of 48-26, whereas Middletown’s softer slate shows a 42-14 win against Lower Dauphin and 29-6 verses Northern. On paper this is the best team McDevitt has played considering the demise of 0-2 Cumberland Valley who they beat 48-21 week #1.

4 Central Dauphin 6A 2-0
Central Dauphin’s big, quick defensive front shut down Berks Catholic in every way imaginable holding them to 112 rushing yards and getting all over quarterback Terrance Derr, holding him to 69 yards passing in a 7-0 road win in Reading. The first unit has not allowed a touchdown to date verses the quality opposition of Wilson and Berks Catholic. Offensively CD had 171 yards rushing with FB/LB Adam Burkhart getting 120 of those yards. The passing game is still not there but the defense and special teams have been the difference, setting them up with good field position. The opponent this week is 11th ranked Manheim Township who has a road win over CD East and last week’s 38-0 win against Dallastown’s big attack. Qb Kirk threw for 270 yards last week verses Dtown so the Rams will need to bring pressure through their aggressive and quick front seven.

5 Middletown 3A 2-0
The Blue Raiders had no trouble beating Northern last week winning 29-6 with running back Jose Lopez gaining 175 yards on 22 carries plus 33 yards in receptions. Prior to that they swamped Lower Dauphin 42-14 so they really haven’t been tested at all. They’ll get that test this weekend with Bishop McDevitt (2-0) paying a rare visit with one of the most explosive and balanced attacks in the state. The Raiders have the muscle and talent to score points. The problem is whether they can stop McDevitt on offense, especially Qb Diehl who already has 640 (65%) yards passing and an 8/0 Td/Pick ratio. He could have a field day going against a new secondary. Middletown’s veteran offense will make it interesting. Let’s see how the D holds up.

6 Harrisburg 6A 1-1
Central Dauphin East transfer QB Kane Everson showed his skills by accumulating 344 total yards himself and 5 Tds in a 74-16 rout of Reading. He completed 12 of 17 tosses for 266 yards while rushing for 78 as the Cougar offense churned out 534 total yards in a nice bounce back from the Coatesville loss. The defense locked the Knights down especially on the ground holding them to 7 yards rushing and 152 total yards. 7 yards rushing! They’re at home this week against a dangerous Cedar Cliff team, currently ranked 17th. After the debacle to Coatesville losing 37-6 in the home opener, they’ll be stoked for a good performance here. Then comes the Mid Penn wars making this close to a must game for them.

7 Berks Catholic 4A 1-1
The Saints dropped from 4th to 7th this week as a result of losing at home to Central Dauphin 7-0. Not a bad loss as losses go but you have to win your home games against the quality on your schedule. The aggressive Rams shut BC down, holding them to 181 total yards. Things don’t get an easier this week for BC playing powerful McDonogh-MD (1-0) who was idle last week after beating Archbishop Wood the week before 16-7. Whatever happens, it’s a great schedule upgrade playing CD, McDonogh and Malvern Prep before getting into the woefully weak Berks Inter County-Section 2.

8 Cocalico 5A 2-0
Cocalico who was previously rated 9th withstood a furious rally by 14th ranked Cedar Cliff to win an important District-3 game between 5A teams, 31-21. The Eagles raced out to a 21-0 half time lead that grew to 28-0 by the end of the 3rd based in part on the unveiling of a heretofore absent passing attach. Cocalico is a ground pounder and while they only heaved it 5 times, 3 went for touchdowns of 26, 38 and 27 yards that caught the Colts off guard. So it had to be a fun day for Qb Noah Palm finally get to toss a few! But they also rushed for 213 yards with a D that was in lock down mode until the 4th quarter when the Colts exploded for 21 points. They’re at Governor Mifflin (0-2) this week, a team they beat 42-21 last year. But Shillington can be a tough place especially with the Mustangs winless in their home opener so look for a lot of intensity in this one.

9 Southern Columbia 2A 2-0
Southern got to 2-0 defeating Mount Carmel Area 41-7, but it wasn’t as easy as the score might indicate. Qb Stone Hollenbach was on target completing 15 of 24 passes for 302 yards, many of them to receiver Julian Fleming who snagged 7 for 114 yards and 3 scores. But MCA’s front 7 came to play, holding the vaunted Tiger attach to 125 rush yards. Coach Jim Roth said it may be the best front they’ll run into this year including the post season! Teams like MCA, and especially Lewisburg have good stuff that’s typically and rightfully overshadowed by SCA. They’re home this week against an old adversary, Selinsgrove, who recovered from their opening day loss to Lewisburg by defeating Jersey Shore 31-10.

10 Wilson 6A 1-1
The Bulldogs moved into the 10th spot from 12 after defeating bitter rival Governor Mifflin 42-28. Looks like the Dawgs found a back in Elijah Morales (5-9, 160, sr) who ran for 217 yards and touchdowns of 62, 52 and 33 yards. Ditto for the QB where Anthony Futrick who completed 13 of 21 passes for 108 yards and a score. He’s at 63% for the year. Up next are the surprising Spring-Ford Rams, undefeated with the solid road win at Central Bucks South, holding the Titans to 120 total yards, followed by their home opening 31-21 win last week against Wayne Valley-NJ. They are playing well for an inexperienced team. And you know this one is on Coach Chad Brubaker calendar being an assistant for many years at Wilson before moving on. Wilson won last year at SF 28-21. If they bring what they brought to CB South in the opener, Wilson is in trouble in what looks like one of the better inter-district games of the weekend.

Central Dauphin is gonna keep winning and moving up the ladder each week (I'm feeling it). And it continues this Friday night when they take on a 2-0 Blue Streak squad that certainly has some pieces but not enough to stop the Rams -- especially at Landis Field (easy two score -- or more -- faves, I'd say).

For the record, I'm going all in on the Green and White this year (and a state championship in 2011 and 6 conference championships over the last 7 years shows they've been banking the "Ws" over the near term and confidence and momentum is two slices of the pizza pie in scholastic ball). Course, "all in" doesn't necessarily mean a gold football but I like them in the mix and I'm penciling them in to be scrapping for it.

Stalk - set me starlight one way or the other.

Ha….we’ll see. Got a lot of work to do getting the passing game up to par. But credit Coach McNamee’s philosophy of putting his best people on D/Spec Teams for masking this to a degree. I feel last year’s yield of 21ppg was an anomaly even with the spread, causing serious dedication to the off season/ weights/conditioning.

The Wilson win was interesting holding them to 7 (scored on 2nd unit) knowing they haven’t averaged less than 30ppg since 2007. Then last week blanking Berks Catholic who averaged 42ppg last year suggests they’re getting it right.

The schedule is always brutal (non-conf g’s Wilson, Berks, Township) then the MP-Commonwealth vs State College, CV, Harrisburg, now Altoona who showed well last week beating Williamsport 38-0, rival CD East, Carlisle and Chambersburg who’ve been doormats but revived this year. CV’s struggling now and will probably lose big this weekend but once the Mid Penn wars start it’s a whole new day….forget the pre-season.
