Early reports from First week scrimmages

No one has anything ? I was at Springfield-great valley. I thought Springfield looked small and struggled on both sides. Didn't see their RB/WR from last year - Long. Anyone know if he's playing ? Would like to hear other scrimmages people were at. Having one scrimmage could lend to some real struggles in week 1.

Heard Neshaminy really performed well @ DTown East and Coatesville and Easton were for the most part a stalemate. Anybody have anything more to add or information on other scrimmages?

Everyone that attended scrimmages must of had to sign waivers not to give out info because no one is reporting much

That is funny (it has been awful quiet so far - everyone is tight lipped this year).

For what it's worth (as I wasn't at the Nesh -- D-Town East -- Garnet Valley scrimmage), I did receive a couple of calls from some friends who were there. Comments included that Garnet Valley had big numbers (as always) and it seemed their QB was pretty good (I was taking the calls while driving yesterday and I hope I got it all "straight"). In fact, both guys had had complements for the Jags and the Cougars.

As to the 'Skins, Mason Jones (sr. QB) was throwing a lot and making a lot of connections (should be a big passing year for the Moleskinners). Besides Zach Tredway (sr. WR) it seems there were plenty of other targets being tested yesterday (big thumbs up on that part of the game).

Running wise they apparently spread it around too (sr. Will Dogba will be the main man) and the reports were it was solid and workmanlike with the line getting thumbs up (sr. Chris Wilson at 6'-5" 290 could/should be a force while there is plenty of experience and good size in that bunch).

Knowing they had a ton of starters back on "O" I don't think anyone has been too concerned about that side.

On "D", where they are filling in a bit more, I did get thumbs up as well as DBs and LBs looked very good (the line was being shuffled around a bit so it wasn't as clear that was all settled in).

Anyway, I know "this" sounds a little vague (my "second hand" reporting) but the overall was that they are solid and expectations are very high for this season.

As an aside what was interesting was too hear the excitement about the freshmen/sophomore groups. There seems to be a boatload of talent in that bunch so the future is just as bright as the outlook for 2016. There are a fair amount of sophs on the 2016 roster at 30 while the sole ninth grader listed is a QB and with Jones a senior the talk was that he would step in next year as a sophomore if he turns out to be what he has looked like so far - but in the meantime Jones should make plenty of noise this year with his passing and running skills (so that is not an issue).

Wrapping this up, in just five more days all of us fans will start getting answers on our favorite teams (and with Neshaminy hosting Roman Catholic and their D1 QB at "The Ridge" - and WBCB live streaming all of their games this season - it's gonna be a fun year for me).

Go 'Skins.

This board used to be swarming with Ridley posters. I know the Ridley alumni were out in force Saturday morning. What's your takeaway of the new staff and system?

Nice report mole.It appears that Neshaminy will produce what many have projected that they would. I definitely think that they are the top team in Disrtict 1, AAAAAA. Best of luck .

I was at AC/WC scrimmage.

West scored twice. Carroll scored once. West scored on two short passes that were turned into 75 & 90 yard scores. AC scored on a 1-yard run. It was set-up by a 37-yard pass to nine.

The teams played two sets of 10-plays and a live scrimmage (about a QT and a half) with varsity. AC ran 38 plays for 140 yards. WC ran 31 for 303.

Good numbers for Carroll with about 60 in uniform and without freshman from what I was told. West had about 55 including freshman.

Carroll had two bigger runners who ran hard. Outside of the one play they didn't have much success with pass. Decent size on line. Team speed appeared to be lacking. Kids played hard and seemed to be into it.

West played two QBs as that still needs to be settled. Both had good moments. Strength of team is on the outside. Multiple guys capable of making a play. Top returning WR Amadou Barry sat out with minor thigh bruise. Raw and inexperienced on OL. Despite that they some encouraging moments. Still will be a work-in-progress, especially early. Defensively, they have good athletes. Not a ton of size in this into, so they'll need to use their speed to create some havoc.

Moleskinner, that is pretty much what I heard from one of the players.
Here is what I am hearing about the team:
The offense looks very strong, after losing only two offensive linemen (one of whom, Hunter Kelly, is now playing at Penn State), explosive WR Denzel Hughes, number three WR Jack Strickland and blocking TE Billie Ritchie. Sure handed Ben Raab, who is a better receiver and at 6’2, 233 has the size to be a good blocker should be a good replacement for Ritchie and Trevor Lay (who was more of a receiving TE). Sophomore WR Corey Joyce made several key receptions last year replaces Hughes and should be a good secondary target behind last year’s leading receiver, 6’4 Zach Tredway who will be one of the captains this year and has been starting since his sophomore season. The third receiver could be 5’8 Mike Garlick, a junior, who is a terrific athlete with a “wolverine” attitude. Garlic will also play linebacker, and his tenacity, athleticism and toughness is reminiscent of Alex Nicholas of the great 2013-14 team. Junior WR Joe Stills (5’9, 171)is another option at WR. Throwing the ball and running the spread offense is three-year starter at QB, Mason Jones. Jones is a strong armed dual threat QB who will be given more read option opportunities this season. Joining Jones in the backfield is returning star running back Will Dogba who has seen significant playing time since his freshman year. Dogba is a thousand-yard rusher who is expected to be up for all kinds of all-star honors including All State (Pa Football News 6A All State watch list). Hayden Rooney returns at fullback, when the Skins go to the power running attack. Rooney is a solid player who runs hard and blocks well. The O line returns undersized, but strong and highly technical starting center AJ Sanko (5’9, 210). Returning starter at guard is Eddie Parry (6’, 255), and returning starter at tackle is big Chris Wilson (6-5, 295). The other tackle looks to be junior tackle Giovanni Figueroa (6’, 255). The other guard looks like it will be either Nick Lapergola (5’11, 245) or Nick Napadano (5’10, 239). That could change, but early indicators point that way. Any way you look at it, Neshaminy has a lot of firepower at WR, QB and RB, and the line looks pretty solid as well. Raab at TE could really provide another option in the air assault package.

The Defense does not look as impressive as the offense, but it does have some really strong performers. 6’4 Zach Tredway is a three-year starter at safety, and is a real playmaker back there. He is joined at one corner by the 6’2, 184 lb, Jacob Gordon a seasoned senior who played very well late last year. There is completion at the other corner. At linebacker, super soph Oleh Manzyk (6’2, 190) is the latest great Redskin LB , following in the footsteps of Denny Lord and Corey Majors (all of whom were 4 year starters). Manzyk is all over the field making big plays and will be the star of this defense. Hayden Rooney (6’ 208) will be one of the inside LBers. The smallish fireball Garlic will probably be a starter at LBer, and star RB Will Dogba will probably see some time at LB. The Dline will feature Kyle Osterhoudt (6’2, 245), and a solid rotation of Parry, Wilson, Figueroa, Raab, and others. They have an abundance of 250 pound plus players who are sophomores and juniors. Once they settle on their rotations they should be fine.

Place kicking duties will once again be in the capable leg of senior Dylan McDonald who has been handling the PK since he was a freshman. McDonald did some punting last year, but I expect someone else may do it this year.

Was not at but heard North Penn looked very strong against Plymouth Whitemarsh. Offense moved the ball at will and defense was stfiling and flying to the ball. I feel a lot of people are underestimating the Knights this year. In most discussions I have seen the Knights are either mentioned as a darkhorse or not mentioned at all in D1. The O-line will need time to gel but Beck has always been strong at coaching them up. They are also replacing the backfield, most specifically West, but I heard Nick Dillon is getting the first crack and looked very good. It may take a game or two to really get the run game going at full speed but as I have said befors NP always has running backs from somewhere. With Udinski back under center and Johns, Hubler, Henley, Vasger, and Thomas all returning as pass catchers expect a very spread out aerial assault. The defense looks strong as well. Vasger returns as a 3 year starting D-end with Jasinski a returning D-tackle coming off a 2nd team all-SOL National Junior year. Zach LaValla saw a lot time rotating in on the line last year as well. The linebackers return Owen Thomas, Dan Drop, and Ricky Johns who plays the hybrid LB/Safety role in Beck's 4-4. Thomas has terrific size and is very physical and Drop started and played in place of Isabella when he was hurt last year and there was very little drop-off. Henley and Hubler return as starters in the secondary. They also have a number of younger players who they are high on coming in as well. They start friday against a LaSalle team that lost their QB to an unfortunate injury then follow that up with a DT East team that lost a lot and Pennsbury who I do not know much about but believe they have lost a lot of players the last 2 years. Not to mention Beck always seems to have their number. Do not be surprised to see the Knights start out 2-1 or 3-0 then roll through the re-alligned conference for a high seed in districts. Not many teams come to Crawford stadium in the playoffs and win. Also, let's not forget this team is returning a lot of starters from a team that beat Neshaminy twice last year. I would absolutely love to see a North Penn-Neshaminy final. Let's make it happen!!!

IronMarshall and NPFan -

Good write-ups! It's nice getting those details in the sandwich.

Neshaminy should be very solid this year and NP too (as always). And let's make sure they're in different brackets come playoff time.

Moleskinner-

Let's hope that is the case. I am quite fond of the semi-annual NP-Neshaminy playoff game but it is definitely the best when it's the final. As a long time NP fan I have grown to both dislike but also greatly respect the Redskins. Good luck to your team this season and hopefully we see you in a few months.

Hey NPfan, can you give me a low down on a couple of players? Zach LaVella is not listed on Max Preps North Penn Roster (I know they have a lot of mistakes), and is Dan Jasinski really 5'6, 165?

IronMarshal-

Jasinski is only 5'6" but 195 as of last year. Small but tough kid, squatty, but strong and athletic. LaValla isn't much different. He is also about 5'7" 190. They will most likely be the base defence but Beck uses a very hybrid D. He will start with an attacking front 4 but when playing teams that have very big lines or like to run a lot he will bring in some of the beef like some of the O linemen and switch to a more 2 gapping scheme with the tackles up front and allow the ends, and in particular, the linebackers to attack upfield. At least that's what I have noticed. The base D is a 4-4 with Johns playing the hybrid linebacker/safety role. Because of this the linebackers are vital in this system and they have some good ones. Owen Thomas is about 6"3" 210, Drop got a lot of experience in for Isabella last year and has a few starts, Johns started and they have a couple of guys they like for the 4th spot. I think he does have a couple of other guys, even underclassmen, that will rotate in on the line that are more around the 220+ mark. Beck has liked to go with smaller, more athletic D linemen for a while now.

North Penn and Neshaminy definitely top two teams to beat in District 1. Can anyone add 3 teams to this group to make a Top 5. Chesmont maybe down this year and Central has struggled to put teams in semis since Ridley 6 or 7 years ago. So where would competition be coming from to knock these two teams off.

delco-

I have heard people touting Perk Valley and Springford. I know PV has the Sturm kid at QB who is very good. As we have often seen though, the PAC teams tend to get beat up by the SOL teams come playoff time. I have also heard DT West is solid along with Coatesville but I do not know enough about them. On another site someone indicated they think far and away it is NP and Neshaminy. I would love to hear what some of the other posters say.

It's a new format in the PAC. No longer will the 6A schools play the smaller schools week in and week out. Part of their struggle was playing weak competition thru the Regular season. PV plays DWest, Judge, Pennridge and haverford OOC. Spring-Ford has Unionville, Chester, Wilson-west Lawn and Exeter OOC the first 4 weeks. Then PAC games with Boyertown, OJR, Methacton and Norristown and each other. Clearly a much improved test. Agree that NP and Nesh have beaten PAC teams somewhat handily recently. PV did throttle CB West and SFord handled a good Pennridge team a few years back to get to the D1 final.

Thanks! They sound a lot like our Alex Nicholas from the great 13-14 team that lost to SJP in the semis. As noted earlier, we have one of those little spark plus this year as well in Mike Garlick, who is a junior.

Seen Roman vs St. Augustine Prep ( South Jersey)

Roman pitched it around a bit. I think every Wr really had a few catches. This was my first time seeing them this year so I'm not familiar with names. Revamped running attack from last year with 2 RB transfers. One kid was a solid 210 in #24 and the other #5 was more of a scat back who started the game. Very speedy in the slots with #9 & #10 both with a few catches. #10 had a 75yd td to start the game. I believe he transferred in as well. Big Joey #1 still starts outside at the one wr the other wide out is by committee it seems. The big QB looked well with some darts. He's a strong kid.

Defense
Run defense was whacky all afternoon. I was told it was due to some key starters sitting out til the season opener. #22 was all over the field at safety. Don't know if that's good or bad but he's a solid tackler. St. Auggy didn't pass much. #9 had an interception in the end zone that stopped a driving td. Need more size at LB. Looks like they were running a 3-4 but the outside LBs were really undersized. Seen their stud #11 walking the sidelines in plain clothes who said he would be playing in the opener. He's a kid that's been plagued with injury his entire career.

Overall too early to say what we will see from them this year as far as record. I think they'll be more competitive. I still think they're one season away from truly competing. They rely a lot on their young players.

That was a good, tough team. I just hope we can get one of these D1 teams into another state final soon.

It gets the blood flowing faster hearing solid information about the Skins. I'm going to try to make it out to the Skins at Whippets in 2 weeks.
