New Football Program - Executive Education Charter

Something to watch here - Executive Education Academy Charter already has an excellent basketball program (currently they're #5 in 3A right now) and will be adding football for fall 2021. EEAC has made splashy hires in other sports - the basketball coach is Ray Barbosa, a two-time All State pick and 2,000 point scorer at William Allen who led UMBC to their first NCAA appearance (not that one) and scored 1,500+ points in college, then played professionally overseas. Barbosa was lured away from Bethlehem Catholic and is one of the big names in local hoops. They've won two D11 titles in the two years they've been open, and have advanced in the state tournament both seasons. They also made a big wrestling hire - Ziad Haddad, a state champ from Bethlehem Catholic who was an NCAA qualifier at UNC before transferring to Kutztown, where he won two Division II National Championships and was back-to-back National Wrestler of the Year in Division II. They have not had the same immediate success as the hoops program.

I don't have any indications as to who the head coach will be. Bob Lysek in the article hints at that it will be a big name locally (Rob Melosky) announced in the next few days. My initial take is this school is very serious about being good at sports as a front porch for the school and they would field a solid 3A football team in short order. Because it is a specialized program, they do not have district boundary requirements, though their charter is with the Allentown School District, who primarily provides their funding (and is in a battle with EEAC right now to cut tuition). EEAC is also trying to open a second location in Allentown - my guess is they would compete athletically as a co-op because they are schools being run by the same administration and board. Something to watch out for up here.

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I’ve been lifting and doing workouts for this upcoming season.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel we can get back to the district championship and win it, but after that, it depends on how hungry we are as a team.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?

What colleges have been recruiting you?

Have you made any college trips yet?

“No plans for any trips.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up is the University of Michigan.”

Q&A with Bishop Shanahan quarterback Cooper Jordan

How did the high school football season go overall?
“This season was great overall. We’re improving each year and this year we went 4-0.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Right now, I’m playing school basketball, but when the season is over, I plan on working out 5 days a week 2 times a day and working with my QB coach.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“Looking into next season, we are leaving off from where we are starting with a lot of returning starters. I believe we’re going to be competitors for states.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Every game is going to be a battle, especially playing in the Chestmont League. You don’t what to expect, so we just have to be prepared for whatever.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“There’s a lot of players to watch out for. A lot of teams have talented players, plus many are working to fill the shoes of previous players that left.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I would like to play football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve been in touch with some coaches via Twitter.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No, not yet.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“I plan on going to some upcoming camps and competing and getting exposure.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“No, I’ve never had a favorite college growing up.”

Q&A with New Castle quarterback Mike Wells

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Our last football season did not go as planned. We got caught in some games that we just couldn’t finish. We were in some games with top teams in the state, we just couldn’t finish those games off. We weren’t a great second half football team, but I think a lot of the young guys got some experience that will be needed for the upcoming season.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I am currently playing basketball, so I am focusing on that right now. Every morning, I go to the gym at 6AM and do some weightlifting that will keep me in shape for basketball.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel we will be a really good football team. I’m going to try and get a few more guys to come out this year, plus the team has been having workouts in the morning before school also. A lot of the young guys showed good signs last year and will have potential to make an impact on the field.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“The toughest team on the schedule will probably be Aliquippa. Everyone knows they come to play every game of every season, and always have some good football players.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“I can’t really think of any player off the top of my head, but that’s not how we prepare for any team. We treat every player the same when we game plan for a team.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I will be playing a sport in college. I do not know if it will be football or basketball, but I’m just being patient and not rushing anything. I want to finish this year and think it out a bit before I make the decision.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have been in contact with a few colleges and received a few letters, but the only college that has really been recruiting me is Cal U of PA for basketball.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“I plan on going on a trip to Cal U when they start bringing people back into the facilities and things back up and running.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up was Oregon because of the uniforms, but if I had to pick one now it would be West Virginia.”

Q&A with Bishop Shanahan linebacker Brandon Choi

How did the high school football season go overall?
“Overall, the season was successful because our team was successful. As a team, we finished the year 4-0 and had a defense that only allowed 3.5 points per game which placed us in the top 5 in the state with respect to points allowed per game. I also believe it was a blessing that we were able to play any games after the cancellation of our season, then having the season reinstated, following all the COVID protocols, and dealing with games being cancelled due to the virus. So, to have four games, even though other teams were able to have many more than us, was truly a blessing. Personally, I wanted to take each opportunity to play to get better in different aspects of my game. I worked in the off-season to build strength, speed and explosiveness and I wanted that to come out more in my play. I wanted to have a mentality of being relentlessly aggressive on every play whether on offense or defense. That meant using my speed and power on offense when I had the ball and explosively attacking ball carriers with leverage on defense. In the end, I was really happy with the way the season went except for one thing. This year we had an outstanding team that followed up our district championship team and we were not eligible to play in the playoff because of the low number of games we played. So, we were not able to defend our district title which I am confident we would have been able to do. This coming year, along with many other goals, we will be looking forward to bringing the district championship back to Shanahan where it belongs. After the season, I was honored to be selected as an All-League, All-Area, All-State and All-Eastern PA Football selection. So, overall, it was a very successful season for me personally and for our football program. I am really looking forward to enjoying my upcoming senior season with my teammates.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I am a three-sport athlete so I will be participating in basketball in the winter and lacrosse in the spring. I will also begin a structured off-season workout program that will be specifically designed to improve my strength, speed and explosiveness. The eight months between January and August does not leave a lot of extra time. So, it will be a complete focus on training for me going forward.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I am really looking forward to playing the season this year because there is no limit for our football team. We have a special senior class that has already accomplished incredible things at Shanahan. When our seniors were sophomores, many of them either started or played meaningful minutes on the team that won our school’s first ever district championship. This past year, we went undefeated and only allowed 3.5 points per game. This coming year we will be looking to accomplish many goals that some may have thought impossible. We are a 4A school and play with some powerhouse 6A schools in our league. As a result, our school has never won a league championship. We would like to challenge for the league title this year, we would like to regain our district championship and we would like to win our first state playoff game as we play well into the state playoffs. I believe this special senior class is made up of a bunch of guys who work hard and are destined to do great things together.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“We currently play in a five-team league where we are a 4A school playing with four 6A programs. We play in arguably the toughest league, the ChesMont National, in the state with both Downingtown East and Downingtown West in the league, along with Avon Grove and perennial power Coatesville. Our whole league schedule is tough. If I had to pick one team as the toughest, then I would say Coatesville because they currently hold the league title so they would be the toughest on our schedule."

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“I believe each team, as a whole, will be tough but I cannot think of any one individual that stands out to me this year. In the past, there have been players like Ricky Ortega, Will Howard, and others that have created individual challenges. This year, it looks to be more of teams that will create challenges than individuals.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“That is an interesting question. I no doubt want to play football in college. The idea of playing football in college has been a life-long dream of mine. I will have to see once I get to college, but I would not rule out walking on to the basketball team as well, if feasible.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have been fortunate enough to be able to communicate with several schools throughout the recruiting process like Syracuse, UCONN, Yale, Akron, Marshall, Kent State and Lehigh. I have enjoyed my time getting to know those coaches and the programs they represent. I am hopeful to continue through the process with all of these schools and possibly others to find the right place for me to spend the next chapter of my life.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Unfortunately, I have not made any college trips because of COVID and the dead period for colleges being extended through April 15, 2021. I have looked at colleges online but have not made any campus visits.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“I am hoping that my calendar heats up in April and May, but I do not currently have any specific plans to visit a college at this time.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My dad went to Syracuse, so growing up, those football and basketball games were always on our TV.”

Q&A with Stroudsburg defensive end Nathan Voorhis

How did the high school football season go overall?
“The season went well. We really came together as a team and stopped playing for individual goals.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“I’ve been working out every day since the season ended. I might do track, but I’m not sure yet.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I think we have a really good chance of going undefeated this year.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think the hardest team will be Emmaus, our first game.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“My guy Ron Blake from East Stroudsburg South. He is going to go crazy next year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I’m going to play football in college.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I’ve been getting recruited by Lafayette and Brevard in NC.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Lafayette.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Not yet.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Pittsburgh has always been my dream school.”

Pine-Richland 2020

New, I talked to some Pr football folks this weekend. it looks like Johnson is moving out of state. Also heard the Schweiger kid got hurt in an accident and may not be able to play as well. Big losses for PR with what they already do lose. Now have to replace entire secondary as well as a nice receiver. I think things are a little bit more even in 5A now.

I’ve been reading up on gateway a lot this off-season, I think their legit and PR’s biggest threat in 5A. I’ve heard their next QB coming up is better than the last two they had, and they are well coached passing team with explosive athletes everywhere. The price kid is the best receiver in this class from the Wpial imo, and the JR they have may be the best in his as well. Add Davis in the backfield and they look pretty legit again. I think PR’s distinct advantage in 5A will be their play on the lines, they return basically all the kids that saw time last year and they all have experience against the pcc D line, NAs lines, and practice against the guys they had in 2018 as well for the senior linemen. Might be the difference for them. It’ll be interesting though how PR adjusts defensively now, because 5A has a lot more spread offense teams compared to the mostly ground and pound teams PR played up in 6A.

Jacky, decided to start the P-R 2020 thread with your message.

I had heard rumors about Johnson's guardian taking a new job, but did not know they were moving. Also had heard nothing about Schweiger. Both would probably be two way starters. If Schweiger can't play then it will be a complete rebuild in the secondary. Who do they have? Will some of the other skill guys have to play there? Spencer? Jochem? Not a good matchup vs. the Gateway kids.

I think you are correct about what P-R has up front. That could be the difference. They should be really good with 4 of them returning and all at 250-270#'s.

And the skill cupboard isn't exactly bare with Spencer, Jochem, Hasley and Miller coming back at the WR positions. They probably need to find an outside WR unless they move Hasley there.

Also need to find a RB if Schweiger can't go. I've heard about a big Sophomore as well as Artie Burn's little brother.

Who is the Gateway QB going to be? I posted on another board a few months back about a transfer kid?
