in Easton? Will he be back? Has a deal been made for him to coach one more year, to save face, then ride off into the sunset? Will Evancho take a year off, then take over the Rovers? Anyone know?

As I understand it, the school board had meetings with the disaffected group back in January. And Shiffert hired an employment attorney and I think an ugly wrongful termination suit would have ensued had he been fired. To my knowledge, he's not going to be fired.

From what I've been told by people close to the athletic department, Shiffert was strongly considering retirement after the 2014 season(and probably would have ridden off into the sunset had they not lost the OT game to Parkland in the D11 final). However, after the public embarrassment of this winter, the head coaching job will have to be pried out of his cold dead hands. I think it guaranteed that the divorce, whenever it happens, will be ugly.

As for Evancho, I think he would be a tremendous person to inherit the program when Steve leaves (he and Moncman would be the two local coaches I would most be interested in if I were running he Easton athletic department). I respect Matt greatly both personally and professionally, and I think hiring him would be a home run like when they brought Hutnik back to revive the hoops program. But I don't know how soon he jumps back in to coaching.

I left the Easton area two years ago, but get back there often. I was there yesterday, and talked about the subject with some friends and recent grads. They say this is his last year, and that Easton will hire in-house.

D1 Transplant - so somewhere between what the two of us have heard is probably the answer...

No doubt. All the guys I talked to would love Evancho, but don't think he'll apply for the position.

Evancho' health needs to take priority. I would totally respect him not wanting to jump right back in to coaching. I also appreciate the optics wouldn't be great if he took a new job next season.

That said, I hope the school would not wait and see who applies. It should be a premier job in the Valley and they should be seeking out the strongest candidates. I'd want to pick up the phone and pursue Evancho, Moncman, Lane, heck, I'd give Todd Parsons a call at Brown to see if he's sick of recruiting yet. There's not a rock star assistant ok the staff, so I would hope they'd approach the opening like when they filled the hoops job successfully with a coach with big success elsewhere (who also was an alum).

What I realize is there may be limitations imposed by the CBA with the teachers. With all of the layoffs, hiring an outsider could be a problem. But barring that limitation, they should go for it whenever the position opens up. If nothing else, Steve is 65 years old, succession is going to come up at some point.
